This bike is only 5-10% slower than my Trek Fuel 98 which weighs 10 pounds lighter! It pedals uphill very well and I have no problems pedalling aggressively for 10 miles and more! It is a very smooth All-Mountain bike. All of the components are very adequate in quality - other similarly equipped bikes cost $200-500 more! | | Weaknesses: | A little too upright. Front fork (Manitou Stance) is very soft, albeit supple. Unfortunately, the only way to increase the compression is through a spring swapout. Top tube is a little short in length for my liking. Shimano Hollowtech cranks are probably the cheapest part of this bike. | | Similar Products Used: | Trek Fuel 98, Norco Team DH, Specialized BigHit, Foes Weasel, Haro Escape 7.3 | | Bike Setup: | Manitou Stance fork (150mm), Manitou Metal shock (150/170mm), Hayes Nines with 8" rotors, Alex Rims DP20, Deore/LX. 37 pounds overall. | | Bottom Line: | This bike is very efficient for its weight. Easy to pedal. Very soft, smooth suspension. Great value for under $2,000! Why go with a cross-country bike when you can have so much more fun with this? Buy it if you aren't quite a downhiller, but you want to have fun; yet, you can still pedal it just about anywhere. Frankly, I was looking to buy the K2 Lithium (because it was a little lighter, but with less suspension) thinking it would be the ultimate XC bike. But after riding the Scott Nitrous up a 1/4 mile hill and then over curbs, etc., I was absolutely hooked. The stance fork locked up on the first ride and was warrantied. The seat post was too long. But everyone always comments that it is very light. The bike has evolved into a capable downhill rig after all the "weak" parts were replaced. Somehow the swing arm got dented to hell but it seems to be holding up. I had the 2004 version (see review below), which got stolen (Grrr), but I liked it so much, I bought the 2005 version, over all other bikes. It has amazing handling, and is very agile, and has the ability to get the front up easily, due to it being well balanced, and quite light. I have set it up with more hard core parts than originally put on, which are heavier, but it still is extremely nimble, and you can flick it about to get out of dodgy situations. It jumps very well, and can be manouvred around in the air well. As well as being amazing at Freeride and DH type riding, the Nitrous can be taken uphills well, due to the telescopic seatpost (needs to be cut down a bit), and its lightish weight. It is definately not an XC bike, and can bounce a little, as it is single pivot, and has 7inches of travel. But still, it means that you can pedal to the top, taking slightly longer than XC bikes, but then absolutely thrash them on the Downhill sections. It eats up bumps very well, and loves speed, and bumpy sections, and comes into its own on singletrack. In conclusion, it is an amazing bike, and when set up correctly, can act as a Downhill bike, Freeride, or All Mountain machine. Amazingly well made, tough, strong, and nimble with good suspension action, which works through all areas of its travel to give a comfy, and amazing ride. | | Value Rating:Overall Rating: |
