Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $1250.00
Strengths:price. For $1250, i got a LOT of bike. It uses the 7.5" of travel very well, and it seems to soak up 10-15 foot drops like theyre nothing. very confidence inspiring
Weaknesses:the fork. Very soft. Plan on replacing it before doing anything too hardcore thats for sure.
Similar Products Used:stinky, coilair, aline, etc...
Bike Setup:stock, except for my drop off triple.
Bottom Line:Excellent bike, especially for the price. Rock solid, and it can even climb if need be. Perfect for somebody looking to buy a bike and upgrade as you go, or get a value that can do just about anything. But don't be fooled, this is not a cheap "bargain" bike. It is ready to rip right out of the shop for sure.

Favoriate Trail:NYC...street riding & local trails

Strengths:This was my first mountain bike & by far the best purchase i ever made.EXCEPT FOR THE FORK.Stance kingpin is garbage, i broke it leaving the bike shop. Spend the extra $150 & upgrade it to the sherman. It's a much better fork.
Weaknesses:There is no real weakness in the bike. I'v taken some pretty serious falls & its still going strong.OH YA,THIS BIKE IS NOT THE EASYEST TO RIDE, THERE IS ALOT OF BOUNCE. I learned the hard way.
Similar Products Used:demo 8,

Favoriate Trail:Creekside
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Strengths:Cornering and high speed stability. Also, the adjustability of the rear geometry is something to behold! Add a 6-way rear shock and the adjustment is infinite. 24" rear wheel. Many people dont like the 24" rear, but I like it and wont go back to a 26".
Weaknesses:As every one says, the front fork is junk. I put a
Boxxer Team on mine and now its a champion. Also the Hayes hfx 9's arent the best brakes, but they work great if you can get them adjusted right. Hard to find GOOD 24" tires
Bottom Line:Great bike. SOLID, SOLID, SOLID! Ive taken some huge crashes on mine and hardly so much as a scratch in the paint. Feels great in the air. Very throwable. Buttery smooth landings. Not a pedaling bike, but why would you buy a big hit if you wanted to pedal somewhere. Outstanding bike at an outstanding price.

Favoriate Trail:Steep and Rocky
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $1600.00
Purchased At:LBS
Strengths:Burly as hell, sexy curves, adjustability, love the dinky 24" rear wheel
Weaknesses:Some of its spec'd componenty, hfx-9's not the best, particularly the fork which I blew in less than 2 weeks.
Similar Products Used:Specialized Ground Control Extreme (early freeride), 2001 bighit, M1, rm7
Bike Setup:05 Bighit FSR, 05 Marzocchi 66rc, Azonic Loveseat, Howitzer BB/07 Hussefelt arms, Cranks Bros 50/50x, Halo rear wheel
Bottom Line:One of the best frames out there, super adjustability, progressive, rear end stays put during pedaling, climbable but not recommended, inspires confidence on the quick steeps, little wheel lets you get down and dirty in banked turns like horizontal I mean. 10+ feet to flat no problem, 25 foot gap to transition you might not notice. Throw the fork away when you get it and use it for a trellis or something. The bike should have been spec'd with the 66, it improved the handling so much it felt like a different bike. I love that Specialized was like, "What the hell, its the last model year for this design, let's put flames on it." Four chilis on the value just because of the fork. Even at a somewhat budget level you should still be able to get a functional fork.

Strengths:this bike is great at speeds, balancing, landing and is durable for the bails. the adjustable raer end is a thing of beauty if you now what trail your going on to be riding, it's nice to be able to drop the bb height for the tight skinny filled days and bump up the suspension for the droping and jump filled runs.
Weaknesses:That damn derailler hanger is expen$ive and bends really easy i found a great deal @ icycles.com and you can get a 3 pac for less then the cost of one at the shop!the grips came off and the lock-ons went on , this is a must have!
Similar Products Used:Riden many downhill/freeride from Rocky mountain, Cove,Kona, orange

Bottom Line:this bike was my fav from pretty much from the get go. i've ridden other bikes that perform right up there with it but when it comes to that one step ahead i feel way more comfortable with the bighit, even the demo 9 feels better on the rough but when it comes to manuvering and basic practicality i'd rather be on the bighit. you can even pedal up Fromme and it's not that bad.

Strengths:24" wheel
FSR design
solid
Weaknesses:When testiing the bike in the parking lot of my lbs, I heard a loud "pop" come out of the left leg of my fork, and the seal slides half way up the stanchion. I assume that was the sound of the air assist blowing. At no cost, the owner of the shop replaced the air assist with another spring or something. It works fine now though...
Similar Products Used:Demo 8, Devinci Johnson, Sinister R9
Bike Setup:stock
Bottom Line:After wating a week to get my brand new fork fixed, I took it up Drummer for the first time and was quite pleased with its performance. The fork handled some small drops (under 10ft.) with ease, I haven't bottomed it out yet. The rear suspension is nice. just nice... The 24" rear wheel makes a huge difference in the corners, it just lays the bike right into them. The bike is also quite agile, I can whip the back end around like its a much lighter bike. For the price I paid, it can't be beat. Bottom line-Solid bike.

Favoriate Trail:007 at Bass Lake, CA
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $1500.00
Purchased At:Herb Bauer Cycles
Strengths:Extremely tight frame, solid as can be even off of huge drops, (in excess of 8') downhill is a dream, tracks well, rear stays stiff when trecking uphill and if ever riding around town.
Weaknesses:Kingpin was a nightmare, but Manitou kindly swapped me for a Sherman slider : ) Bad ass fork compared with the stance. Tires could have used some more thought, went through both front and rear within 3 months. A little on the heavy side as i am only 150 pounds but it will make your legs strong as can be though!
Similar Products Used:specialized FSR comp (1999), Cannondale V900.
Bike Setup:2005 bighit, Manitou Sherman Slider, Maxxis high roller 60a 2.70's, everything else is bone stock and strong as hell (slammed the XT rear derailluer on a rock twice in one run, scratches, nothing else, same with the Hayes calipers, the hit was hard enough to crack them open just a minor scuff on the powder coat!!) 007 is a pretty burly trail.
Bottom Line:As an avid rider for the past five years doing everything from BMX to road, to cross country, I am especially pumped about this bike. I jumped off the roof of the RDH a hair over 8 feet high) at my school and the frame didn't even make a creak. The bottom line here is that this bike is absolutely great for anyone that wants to get into freeride/downhill at a great price with a fairly light yet completely bulletproof frame design, solid componentry minus the fork, and an eagerness to tackle downhill runs like noneother. I have ridden it hard on both street as well as some crazy downhill runs for a little over a year now and am still thoroughly impressed!! Will recommend to all and will never buy another brand. Five flammin' chilis all the effin' way!!!

Strengths:super fast coming down, that 24 inch wheel results in quicker acceleration. In the past i have been mostly a cross country rider and on this bike I am still able to beat most weekend warriors who are peddaling up their enduros and similar bikes. Made me strong like ox.
Weaknesses:Weighs a lot. but its kind of nice, when you do a drop the bike just sticks to the ground and keeps on rolling. Im enjoying this whole downhill thing a lot.
Bike Setup:stock.
Bottom Line:this is a really fun bike, and its not impossible to pedal it up a hill if you need to. so for the money this is the bike i decided to go with. Im able to keep up with a lot of the cross country guys and then i destroy them on the downhill. Its the best of both worlds.

Strengths:Proven reliable frame with simple and effective rear end
8.1/6.8" of rear travel
Great handling in corners and at speed
Beautiful welded and finished
Weaknesses:Mine came with SPV Sliders instead of the Stance which was good but I found the Sliders more suited to the big hits of freeriding as opposed to the smaller faster hits of DH
As the 24" rear design is not so popular anymore tyre choice is limited
Similar Products Used:FSR Pro

Bike Setup:Standard frame/shock/cranks/wheels

Bottom Line:Awesome bike for getting into DH. I bought it just before moving to Jindabyne for riding at Thredbo. The Single Tracks have lasted the whole summer and I've only just killed the rear. Replacing the 7" Shermans with 8" Boxxers slackened the head angle just enough to make the more freeride geo more stable at speed yet still handle the tight sections

Strengths:Now this bike has a really plush feeling ride. I love the way it rides, and jumps, especially how it handles drops. I think the double crown forks are also a nice feature.
Weaknesses:The bike is a little on the heavy side, but nothing to complain about for a downhill bike. The main problem I think, is the rear suspension. I think you would be way better off with something a little more plush.

Bottom Line:A great bike, and a great buy if you can get it under $2000, like I did. I mean, sure, the rear shock could use a little work, and it is a little heavy, but no real complaints. I am willing to take this thing off bigger jumps, drops, stair hops, etc. than any bike I've had in the past. It would be a good bike for those that can't spend $7000 on a bike, but are willing to shell out over a grand. Especially those who want to take their bike to places they can't take their current one. A good upgrade from a lower quality bike. It lands really well, and I think that's what matters when it comes down to it, because what does it matter how high you can jump it, or how light it is, if it can't take the landing.
