The Nucleon allows you to run a Rohloff and a 12mm thru axle by putting the transmision in the frame. The Rohloff is 1 lb. heavier then a normal drive train but at least the weight is in the center of the frame. You also have an advantage when pedaling thru muddy, rooty sections because there is no chain skip. The frame is a work of art especially the spot welding. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Seems very strong. No derailures due to the Rohloff hub mounted above the bottom bracket. Excellent gear change, even as you roll into a section, no pedalling required. Available with a 1.5" Headtube to take Sherman Breakout plus forks.
Rides like a dream.
Chains never fall off.
No rear mech to rip off.
No front mech to damage. | | Weaknesses: | Bottom bracket is a little low - may suit 888 forks?
Chain tensioner creats drag.
Crapy bolts - replaced with stainless from local store for £5
100mm bottom bracket - ISIS only - not the best.
Gearbox housing can rub your ankles - or bite chunks when it gets techy.
Chain constantly spinning - extra drag - and needs lubricated (Scottoiler)
Usual Rohloff 7-8 hesitation but you get used to it.

But I've used shimano/sram for years so I thought Rohloff next - and this has to be the ultimate Rohloff Bike. | | Bike Setup: | Nicolai Nucleon FR170 - Rohloff mounted above the Bottom Bracket - Sherman Breakout Plus forks - RaceFace Diabolus kit and Michelin Tubeless tyres.
Mine is very low geared - equivalent to a 20x34 low and a 32x11 top (so equivalent to decent 2 x 9 drivetrain). | | Bottom Line: | It's one hell of a bike. It's not perfect. The compromises to do away with the normal drivetrain create their own problems. But I think they are worth living with.
A full spread of gears, and no chance of the chain falling off - super cool.
It's like a full-on DH bike - but it has low gears and can be pedalled up hills as well - how cool is that?
