Finally found a good use for it. | | Weaknesses: | How has this product become the standard and most popular American bug repellant? | | Similar Products Used: | Similar to Off? Umm, I've never been sprayed by a skunk but I suppose that would be about the same thing. | | Bike Setup: | Right side up. | | Bottom Line: | I finally found a good use for Off while watching a show called "I Shouldn't Be Alive."
This totally unprepared guy is lost in the Amazon when a large predator approaches, hunting him. Being unexperienced in the outdoors, much less the Amazon jungle, he of course brought the most notoriously ineffective Off bug aerosol spray. So he waits 'til the big cat is close enough to attack, then lights the aerosol to scare it away.
Sure enough, he wasn't bitten. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Watering eyes weren't an issue, as the direct blast right to my head caused some momentary blindness. What I will say is that big economy sized cans of the Deep Woods flavor are hard to come by. I don't want that commie Orange Can weak stuff....that's bush league. If Off can come to its senses and make the cans of Deep Woods bigger for parties, weddings, bah mitzvahs, then I'll be a true believer! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

from That place you can't reach on your back. Date Reviewed: March 19, 2003 | | Favoriate Trail: | Buzzing around your ears while your trying to sleep and feeding on the veins in your knuckles. | | Duration Product Used: | More than 3 years | | Purchased At: | Camping sights and backyards world wide. | | Strengths: | Smells good, Tastes good, It's the Don Perignon of bug "repellent." Better than Kool Aid.
It covers up the scent of lady mosquitos I've been cheating on my wife with. | | Weaknesses: | My mosquito wife gets mad when I get home stinking of the stuff and she's there taking care of our over 300 children. She screams at me, "You've been out all night drinking blood, haven't you! You reek of 'OFF.' I can smell it all over you!" | | Similar Products Used: | Citronella, camp fire smoke | | Bike Setup: | Whatever those rolling bloodbanks come along on. And when they crash, WA-HOO!! All-you-can-eat buffet!!!! | | Bottom Line: | I love OFF especially because it makes the people I feed 'off' actually believe that my friends and I are not going to suck them dry, so they don't put up such a fight.
Then the smell and having it get in their eyes irritates them and that makes their temperatures go up, making them much more attractive all night drink bars.
Finally, the tingly feeling OFF gives to humans when they spray it all over themselves masks the feeling of me sticking my needle in them until the very last moment when I'm full and have left them with a big, itchy bump on some highly sensitive part of their bodies--such as their knuckles, ankles, and toe knuckles (I love toe-knuckles in particular).
It's and aquired taste, but well worth getting your pallette used to. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$2.00 | | Purchased At: | I used OFF throughout my childhood, so I guess I'll say here and there. | | Strengths: | The smell--is it supposed to convince us that if we can't stand the odor then the mosquitos can't either? | | Weaknesses: | OFF works about as well at keeping bugs away as cough drops do at keeping you from coughing--unless you presently are stankin' of a fresh coat, it's no good once you leave the suburbs, and you have to absolute cover yourself in the stuff for it to work. | | Similar Products Used: | Ben's 100 | | Bike Setup: | 2002 Trek 8000, stock except for Shimano 959 pedals, cycling computer and such. | | Bottom Line: | OFF is awful (OFFul?). It's effectiveness is limited to the backyard of your average suburban home in the rolling hills of Westchester, NY--and even that is a stretch.
I've been around the world, and experienced all kinds of mosquitos--in the US northeast, Mexico, and the Far East--and I can tell you Worcheshire sauce might be more effective than OFF.
About the only way OFF is effective is when it makes your sweat so sticking that mosquitos are drowning in it. You literally have to cover every inch of yourself in it for even minimal effectiveness and keep spraying it on at regular intervals. Pretty soon it bothers you more than the bugs who, though they may be less in number, continue to feed on you.
Once I tried Ben's 100 I was hooked. You don't need to pour it over your head or spray it on--no decent repellent should need to be sprayed on--you just put a bit of it here and there and it works, so a tiny little pocket-size bottle of the stuff can last you until you misplace it a few years later and get a new one.
So go to a tackle shop or a real outdoor equiptment store and get yourself a little Ben's 100, which doesn't even come in large volume as far as I know because it doesn't need to--as opposed to the PINT spray cans OFF comes in. Put a little on your finger and put little stipes of it on your exposed skin areas. That's all you should need.
Happy trails. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Don't use it if you want to ride in the group, cuz noone really likes the smell. Some hypocondhriacs are scared of deet, but it hasn't affected me yet. I found that off works better than all the other brands. I use the Skintastic kind, which I think feels the best. It isn't heavy or really oily, and it still works pretty good. It only lasts about 2 hours, and the deer fly's still buzz around your head, but at least they won't bite. And as far as I know, there's not DEET in skintastic. | Overall Rating: |

Deet Rocks! It's that simple. Whenever you find yourself riding through those bug infested forest trails, use the 100% deet Deep Woods Off Bug Spray. Deet may eat through some clothing so be careful where you put it. It is cheaper than aerosol, lasts longer than aerosol (about 8 hours), and it has 4 times more deet than aerosol. Most aerosol stuff has about 25% deet. The Deep Woods Off comes in a small bottle of about 100ml that costs less than 10 bucks, and will last you all year! My bottle is still half full from the spring and it's been worth every cent! | Overall Rating: |

Bug Spray!? DEET is great, but I like the paint on my bike, the fibers in my shorts, the skin on my back. DEET will destroy these things, and we happily smear it on ourselves to save the discomfort of some bug bites. The Avon stuff works if you reapply it every thirty seconds (but your skin is sooooo smooth). For my money, nothing works as good as garlic. It is cheap: buy a bulb at the grocery and plant it - instant lifetime supply. It tastes good (debatable). It not only repels bugs, but people too. You get the illusion of being a better rider - nobody wants to keep up with you. It is non-toxic and will spare the finish on that new Jag you bought with your DEET budget. If all this does not convince you to renounce your DEET fetish, then try using the lower (35%) concentration DEET products. Army tests show these to be just as effective as the 100% repellents. Or you could try a different approach: ride only in the winter. The original bug, Gregor. | Overall Rating: |

Wait a second, since when is bugspray considered riding equipment?Well, if you've ever ridden in the woods of MAINE, you'd know. DEET OFF bug spray works exelent for all those little demons of the air. Mosquitoes? HA HA HA, foolish mortal. Horseflies man!! Those things are smart and MAN can they take a chunk out of you. OFF keeps off all those little things. Spray it on your shoes, and it helps keep the ticks down very nicely. Sure, DEET might not be good for you, but just spray it on your clothes, not you.It might seem wierd to think of bugspray as at home here at a mountain biking page, but I don't think anyone can argue it's a vital part of the setup. And Deep Woods OFF is the very best there is. | Overall Rating: |

Bugspray?
Oh, post all the reviews you want about the latest thing you're not sure if you actually OWN yet, and all the chi chi that your friend owns that you happened to have ridden once ( or fondly gazed at through the glass counter), but when it comes down to actually riding in the spring, you won't even notice your bike while you try beat back the cloud of mosquitos that smelled you coming from 3 miles out.
Off! 100% DEET comes in handy little bottle and will save you from all kinds of little beasties. It lasts way longer than the aerosols that have only 25% DEET, and smells just, just, like bug spray. DEET may have nasty long term health side effects, though, so ask somebody knowledgeable if you should risk it. Personally, I'm not convinced I should worry since I'm not drinking it or bathing in it 100 times a day.
Keep it away from your spandex lycra shorts, which it melts quite nicely. BTW, Benadryl exrta strength itch cream works great for the bites you do get. Happy writi-er-RIDING. | Overall Rating: |
