    Date Reviewed: June 19, 2006
    Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
    Price Paid: $40.00
    Purchased At:LBS
    Strengths:Very durable, never broke in 3 years of use, not very expensive
    Weaknesses:Not rust free, Shimano XTR/Dura-Ace are cheaper
    Similar Products Used:Shimano IG and CN-7700
    Bike Setup:Top Fuel, CrossMax, FRLT, XT/XTR drive train, Hope Mini
    Bottom Line:I am using this chain for about 3 years. I used a CN-7700 before this and it kept breaking very often in the last years of use. I decided to get a more durable chain. The Connex 904 was very durable, I am changing it because it is worn (better than changing all drivetrain later).
    Compared with the CN-7700, the shifting is about the same, but not having a broken chain in 3 years is like a dream. I took good care of it, the quick link enables often cleaning because it is so easy to open the chain. For top condition, keep it clean and lubed. Some times it rusts, but only if not lubed on time.

    5 Chilis for 3 years of problem free chain
    4 Chilis for being more expensive than a XTR chain

    Bike Setup:GT Zaskar Pro with full XT group set
    Bottom Line:Nothing but problems from the beginning. The chain has snapped twice in 6 months and is stretched too far for use, the links are too soft and burr too easliy causing chain suck. The joining link is great for chain removal but a real weak point in the chain.

    Bottom Line:This chain is a joke. After only the second ride I began having shifting problems. After checking everything I removed the chain and found it binding at one spot. It had also streched a half link in only 50 miles of riding. I went back to a Shimano and all problems have dissapeared. The only good thing about this chain is the quick link which I transferred to my Shimano chain.

    Bottom Line:Went through three shimano chains the first year I rode my bike, A frind recommended a Wipperman Nickel plated chain and I have loved it. This chain is bomb proof, I ride 3,000 plus miles a year and have riden this chain the whole time. This last year the chain has finally stretched to the point where I will need to replace the whole drive train but after 4 years of riding on it, I am not going to complain. I abuse the hell out of it and it just keeps spinning. Doesnt like to shift into the large chain ring under any type of load but I expect that is a front derailuer problem since I had the same issue with the shimano chains. I highly recomend the Wipperman Nickel plated chain for anyone.

    Bike Setup:Stock 2004 Giant Iguana
    Bottom Line:First up, I am reviewing the Connex 904 chain here since there wasn't a separate category for it, but I'm sure my comments will apply for the others in the range.
    This seemed like a great chain at first and the quick release link was a godsend the one time I used it. I made extra sure to follow the instructions online regarding how to orientate it correctly when putting the chain back on. About 6 hours of riding later (in two separate sessions) the quick release link failed (even though the chain was less than 15 hours of riding time old) - when I was 8 km into a trek with a 15 km trek up a mountain still ahead of me. And woe is me... I left my chain tool in the car. Needless to say I was a tad slow everywhere where there wasn't a slight decline. I am really dissapointed in this chain now and will never be able to trust it again.

My LBS indicated that the Connex with nickle plating was way stronger. Well today was the last straw. I have repaired this thing over 10 times. My cogs are good and shifting is good when its not broken. I am switching back to SRAM. I would not recomend this to anyone who is a heavier rider and cranks on their bike.

    Similar Products Used:Shimano LX Chain
    Bike Setup:Avanti Baraccuda HardTail, LX front & rear
    Bottom Line:I installed this product after it was highly recommended as a substitute to Shimano chains. Initially I was cursing the shop owner who sold it to me, expensive chain, ruined first trip. I'm still adjusting the rear mech, it seams that this chain has moods. One day it will be the best chain ever used, another day it won't shift. Nothing wrong with mech.

    And yep, definately jumps in 9th if the link is upside down.

    Handy tip: use the feature of the link to turn chain upside down every so often, changes the way the chain wears, kinda like rotating your undies to get more life between washes. Don't forget to turn the link upside down tho!

    Overall: I still love the removable link, a chain should be cleaned by soaking, the crap inside the rollers is what wears the chain. But am still not satisfied with the shifting, and generally this chain appears to be variable. Next time I'll get a shimano chain and use this link.

    Bottom Line:Yeah, I know its not for the stainless, but this chain is good. I look after the chain (connex link makes that easy) and the first one lasted over a year before I replaced it, and even then it was nowhere near worn out. I have no ghost shifting which some people seem to have with the NRS and the gear changes are butter plus! To the reviewer who said his chain jumped, I can just about guarantee that you installed the connex upside down. I started using the Wipperman chain when I was selling my old 8 speed. Wanted a real cheap chain and got the basic Wipperman 800. I could not believe it was the same bike, the changing was so smooth compared to using the SRAM pc68. When I first purchased the NRS, I had the (then 904) chain fitted instead of the Shimano that was OEM, and have now replaced that with the later 908. The chain is basically bulletproof, and am 100% satisfied with it.

    Strengths:Great chain for mountain biking. I'm reviewing the Nickel plated version not the stainless. Chain strength is great much better than the XTR! Shifts well for a chain with a complete Master Link. Master link allows for chin's removal to be cleaned unlike Shimano's pin System.
    Weaknesses:Some shifting issues, it dosen't shift as crisp as my XTR did but it is a weakness that I will take. Read below for the entire reason's why.
    Similar Products Used:Shimano XT XTR and LX
    Bike Setup:Specialized Stumpjumper FSR XC, Highly modified. Too many to list here.
    Bottom Line:This is a great chain I definaly recommend it for mountain biking! Not the stainless steel model but the nickel plated model. Don't waste your money on stainless steel for mountain biking! Stainless stell is much softer than regular steel so it will bend and break much easier! Stick with the good ole steel nickel plated model!
    As for the chain I love it I went through TWO shimano XTR 7001 models before I went to this one. It is definaly better! The second chain bent the links as it snapped and took out the cage to my XT Front derailer. This one has given me ZERO problems. I will admit it dosen't shift as crisp as the XTR's did but I will take strength over shifting any day. I had to splice a chain trail side in order to get my bike running last time my XTR snapped!! Until you have had that pleasure don't knock this chain it is VERY strong I have not had one problem. The master link is great it allows you to remove the chain to clean it HOW A CHAIN SHOULD BE CLEANED!! Chain cleaners streach your chain due to the irregular angle you put them at! Try the nickel plated version of this chain and you will agree it's great, if the master link is really giving you shifting problems then ask you LBS for the upgraded master link for it. It is slimmer and will not cause shifting problems I still use the orginal CONNEX link with a Shimano XT, XTR setup and I have no shifting problems. My bike is an Intrupted Seatpost Designed FSR and if I had shifting problems or chain skipping it would increase with every time I hit a bump! Try measuring you chain before you cut it and don't shift in stupid places and you won't have problems. The guy below my review admits to shifting wrong and he wonders why he snapped a chain!?!?!? Listen it's a great product get a nickel plated version and you won't go back to a Shimano chain again the only other chain I know of that is this good is a SRAM Powerlink 9 my buddy uses for his Trek Fuel! PEACE!!

    Weaknesses:I was very disappointed with the connex link. Sure it is easy to put the chain on and take it off, but when on the smallest rear sprocket the chain skipped terribly. The chain was brand new and so was my rear cassette (Shimano LX). Originally I thought it was a gear adjustment problem. Finally I removed the connex link and the problem disappeared instantly. Too bad, becaue the chain cost a lost of money.
    Bottom Line:Don't buy this chain until Wipperman improved the master link.

    * Torsionally stiff
    * Durable
    * Quiet
    * Resists chainsuck better than SRAM
    * Connex link is the easiest master-link to use

    Similar Products Used:Shimano LX/XT/XTR level chains. SRAM PC69, PC99
    Bike Setup:Titus Switchblade, XTR derailluers and XT rings/cassette
    Bottom Line:This is a great chain. I've been struggling to find a decent chain for several years. The SRAM chains are too wimpy and if you jam a shift, the inner-plates can twist and jam. The Shimano pins are not durable enough so I tend to break those also. The Connex is a dream because it has put up with my ham-handed shifting as well as my less than stellar cleaning techniques and hasn't croaked on me yet. I'm terrible on chains, usually a Shimano or SRAM PC-99 will only last a couple of weeks while a SRAM PC-69 (my previous fav) would last about 6 months. The Connext 908 is 6 months old and doesn't have any noticable wear.

    I wish MTBR would separate the Connext chains into multiple products because the 905 (Stainless Steel) seems to be too weak for mountain biking, but the 908 rules.

    Don't use the stainless version on your mountain bike. It just isn't strong enough to handle the kind of loads it is required to take.

    BUT - The non-stainless, 908 model chain is fantastic. Shifts at least as well as the Shimano chain and better than the SRAM chain. Plenty Strong. The masterlink is the best masterlink around - far better than the SRAM/Lickton style link.

    Bottom Line:i had worn down my xt cassette and decided to replace the chain along with a new sram 7.0 casstte. i immediately had shifting probems under load although everything worked well in the stand. basically anytime demands were made on the drive system the chain would skip but remain on the same cog. i suspected the chain right off, as i was unable to get this to shift correctly i took it to my lbs for an expert evaluation. they checked-out the entire drive and then did a derailler adjustment and checked the hanger for straightness.. so after and feeling confident i took the bike out on the trail and again had the same problems under load, terrible noisey shifting unlike anything i have ever experienced. still suspecting the chain and on a hunch i took the connex link off and tried the shifting without it, shifting improved markedly. i thought i was all set but then the chain broke twice. i replaced the wippermann with a sram 69 and it has been smooth shifting since. i hesitate to complain about any product but this chain costs a bit and performed so poorly. perhaps i just got a bad chain or maybe there is an incompatability with the sram 7.0 casstte, at any rate the bike was checked out by a good mechanic, and shifting was great as soon as i took off the wippermann. end of story......happy riding and be thankful for our sport.

Unfortunately, I didn't have an extra chain to replace it, so my ride was just canceled for the day. Upon removal; however, I counted (26)twenty-six broken or cracked side plates on a 105 link chain. This is absolutely ridiculous!!!! I am going to send this POS back to Performance for a refund. I think I will stick with the SRAM PC99. I've had good luck with it in the past, but thought it would be nice to have a rust free and supposedly tougher chain. I guess that was too much to hope for. I'm going to rate this chain as one flamin turd, only because there are no negative values. Unless, I just got a defective chain, which is always a possibility, I would recommend saving your money and get something cheaper that lasts longer. A super cheap $7.00 chain from Wal-Mart will surely last longer than 4 rides.

The drivetrain was clean of debris and the chain was lubed and the bike was tuned before each race and I made sure to not stress the chain when shifting by not shifting under power. I'm not saying that the chain is terrible, but it didn't work for me. If you're a racer try to stick with equipment that you know works for you. Don't experiment during your A-priority races.

    Weaknesses:I figure I'll get 1K miles which is much better than the 6-700 miles I get with just about any shimano. The link is so easy to use you want to clean the chain
    Similar Products Used:Shimanos, all flavors
    Bike Setup:Marin Trail pro, z-1 xtr/xt...
    Bottom Line:I'd buy again cause this chain seems to last, quiet and seems more suple than the shimanos making less harsh shifting. Fancy stepping on the links seems to really aid shifting. Most expensive chain I every bought but am happy will post final milage when it goes out, for now 5 burning beans all around, have fun!
