$600.00 | | Strengths: | It lasted for 8 years (no more). | | Weaknesses: | Snapped in 2 suddenly (at the fork junction) | | Bike Setup: | 80 mm travel fork (RST) 2.1 in tires | | Bottom Line: | It hurts to snap a frame. If you hear a lot of cracking when you pedal better check carefully the frame. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$400.00 | | Strengths: | Frame, Rims & Price | | Weaknesses: | Brake pads, RST shock | | Similar Products Used: | Trek and Specialized in the same price range | | Bike Setup: | stock + new brake pads | | Bottom Line: | It is a good bike to start with. If you are new to mountain biking this is a perfect bike. Before you spend $$$$ on an bike that you will endup under using get a starter bike like this one until you progress to a more advanced level. The shock is a bit bouncy but still ok to start. I have punished this bike and it still keeps on working well. The new highend brake pads greatly help...these are a must purchase. However, after one year of good riding an upgrade is needed. Either all new parts or simply a new bike. Overall, it is a perfect bike to test to see if you really like the sport. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

The forks aren't bad for moderate terrain, they're adjustable, but you can hardly tell. The breaks need adjusting about every three rides. The cranks flex a little but work a treat. The 6061 frame is responsive and strong. i cant buckle the rims and the hubs hurricane proof. this is a great bike for someone who want to ride trails as well as to work or scool. If you are hardcore dont bother. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

from Sydney, Australia Date Reviewed: November 28, 1999 | | Duration Product Used: | 6 months | | Strengths: | Strength of frame | | Weaknesses: | Brakes, Hubs are susceptable to the wet. | | Similar Products Used: | Shwimm Mesa | | Bike Setup: | As purchased | | Bottom Line: | Picked it up as insurance job, have found the bike to be a great fun to ride on the road, and for riding around the below average Sydney Streets, however once I rode it off road the hubs gears filled full of garbage and needed cleaning and complete regreasing (EVERY TIME NO MATTER HOW SHORT THE RIDE!). Great for riding however and due to the not to fancy paint job wasn't stolen like my previous bike.... | Overall Rating: |

The shocks are amazing and can be adjusted for the terrain change and it's an overall great bike. This was my first suspension bike and I found it perfect for cross country begginers and Intermidate.

I never really tried a bike with a good High End Suspension so i cant tell if the RST 381 is any good, But I find it good. But when it gets muddy the chain often locks up, a real pain. But i think The Giant ATX 830 is a grat bike for beginners and Intermidaite Bikers | Overall Rating: |
