$20.00 | | Purchased At: | Thrift store | | Strengths: | This is about a Giant ATX 760. Everything about this bike is wonderful. I've had no problems with any components after buying it at a thrift store for $20.00. Yes that's right $20.00!! It was a retired gem that was used a lot it looked like with two flat tires and a little rust on the handle bars chain and sprockets I took her home. | | Weaknesses: | none I have come across yet, could use some upgraded brakes though, old cantilevers on now | | Bike Setup: | Gyrin suspension neck. Shimano Deore LX Crank and shifters. Specialized sprockets. Araya rims. These components all came on the bike the way it sat at the thrift store. | | Bottom Line: | Great bike and deal that I will probably never come across again in my life. I just wish Florida had better riding to really test my little baby. Cant wait to upgrade my little 760 I have it all apart right now to repaint and upgrade it. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

This bike absolutely rocks! I've now almost completely kitted it out with XTR and it fairly hums! A set of road wheels with 1" slicks means it turns into a 'roady' through the week and a set of nobblies makes it a crusty on the weekends!

I hope to be riding for another thirty years (into my sixties) and I'm not planning on being in the woods so I can keep up with the lastest technology. All cables got replaced when i installed the v-brakes. cranks got replaced once with the exact same year and model (rings were what needed replaced, but it is cheaper to buy an entire crankset instead of just the rings????) The mag 21 has original seals and still holds air pretty good, i change the oil in the mags every year. had a judy xc but put the mags back on for good when i blew two judy cartridges (expensive to replace). Deraillers, BB, hubs, and Shifters only got overhauled twice since i first bought this bike. i now have a Santa Cruz Superlight w/ marzocchi z2 xfly, but cannot find a reason to get rid of the giant since it's given so many good years! Bought a 97 Giant ATX 780 in October of 97 for $570 marked down from $770 because it was year end clearance. Use it to commute 25 miles a day/ 75-100 miles a week. Take it down hill too. Love the componants but overall this thing feels like it is not put together very well. After 6 months I have to replace the headset bearing, the frame creaks. Put a rack on my bike for commuting. Giant has provided an attachment for a rack on one side of the rear wheel but not the other. Perhaps they have so many customers they need to drive some of them away with their goofy engineering ideas. Probably have about 500 miles on it and haven't paid a cent to have it repaired yet thanks to my bike stores free adjustments. My friend has a Jamis exile and his bike feels much more solid than mine (we paid about the same price but his was only $100 off)but the componants were not as good. Very dependebale machine, and very sturdy (I'm 6'4 and 170 lbs). Responsive bike, great frame and no problems or complaints. A good climber and excellent downhiller. Very good at the technical stuff too. Will soon add front suspension (Indy XC or C) and will need new wheels soon. Previous bikes included a Stumpjumer and an old Schwinn, this is best of them all...by far. Would definately but another one. It was a toss-up between a 97' Trek 7000 SHX and the 96' Giant ATX-780, I chose the Giant! Why?It's because, I got the Giant on clearance for $800 Cad, equiv to $570US. The bike is a 24 speed and comes with all LX components and the XT derailleur (Not STX-RC/STX stuff), Rock Shox Quadra 21R front shocks, GripShift 800, Zap Co rims (light but not as well made as Mavic) and Psycho tires (not too bad for my riding style) and LX M System Cantilever brakes. The weight is, I would say, almost the same as or lighter than 7000 SHX. But what strikes me the best is the frame size. I have 16 size frame and it fits me like a glove, though the 7000's 16.5 is good too, the Giant is better. And the warranty on the Giant frame is better than the TrekThe Selle San Marco Strada Hi-Pro saddle that came stock with this bike is junk and always gave me a sore butt after a ride. I immediately replaced it with a Serfas gel seat and I would highly recommend this upgrade or a swap at your LBS before you buy this bike.Otherwise, the gripshift 800 works very well, in fact it's so good that it surprised me the first time I used it. I used to own a 12 speed mountain bike for 8 years that came with a thumb shifter and ofcourse low-end Shimano Tourney grouppo. I would think that my next bike would have been a bike with the Rapid Fire system similar to my thumb shifter. Upon trying out the Gripshift on the advice of my LBS, I quickly understand the concept and benefits of having it. Quick downshifting and upshifting of gears on downhill and uphill rides on rough terrain make it suitable for my riding style. And I think that, with Gripshift, anything below 800 is probably not going to satisfy the most serious riders out there. The Gripshift 600 is also good, but god the 400 and the lower end gripshifters are better named Gripshiters. They work, but not as good as the 800 or 600. The Quadra 21R from RockShox that came stock with the bike performs decently. Though not up to the standard of the Indy C that comes with the Trek 7000SHX, it's better than the Quadra 5 on the Trek 6000SHX or the 850SHX 97' model, which is at the same price range as my Giant. Trail rides are comfortable enough with a different degree of small and big bumps. The handling of the bike is quite good, but not as swell as the other more EXPENSIVE bikes out there. After all, I'm not exactly looking for one anyhow and for the price, it beats the Trek 7000SHX or the 930SHX in components, except maybe the V-brakes. That's going to be my next upgrade when I've got the money, but the existing M system LX cantilevers are not too bad either. I've also added bar ends (the long version) to the bike and all the essential accesories to it. It's still light after the upgrade and it's still cheaper than the 7000SHX. In fact, if I add LX-V brakes or Tektro RBP V, it's still cheaper than the 7000SHX with stock components!Overall, a good buy for me and a nice upgrade from my old bike!I'll write another review for this bike when I get a chance to hit on more technical trails. | Overall Rating: |

Actually my review is of the ATX 750. For the price of around $430 it serves its purposes for those with a financial strain. Although it has some lower end components (STX), the '96 line of components is nothing to complain about. That's where the price difference is the compromise. The RST 381 shocks work pretty well, and are ADJUSTABLE and REPAIRABLE and MAINTAINABLE. Go ahead and throw your money down for a better (higher end components) bike if you can afford it, but I have other interests to feed, also. Very impressed for the price. | Overall Rating: |

The frame has never had any trouble and the paint is the best Ive ever had on a bike. It looks almost brand new! The bike has just over 7,200 miles now, so thats pretty damn good. The bike is a little heavy, (27 lbs, 22 inch frame), but its built like a tank. The seat post is 30.2 and its a cro-moly frame! I rode about 20 or so bikes before purchasing the ATX 780 and the only thing that seemed to ride anything like it was the Bontrager Privateer. I'm 5'10 and 155 pounds and a strong (expert?) climber and weak descender (I like to stay in one piece). I also enjoy technical sections w/rocky, steep and otherwise ugly obstacles. The list of new stuff on the bike: Syncros hardcore straight bar, Suntour GG pedals w/powergrip, Girvan Vector II w/dedicated stem, Paul Crosstop III (f) brake, Race Face (old-style) cr-mo BB. Wt = 24.5 lbs. Likes: lively, light out of the box, stable, easy to finesse through the technical sections. Dislikes: low BB ht (prefer 13), no upper rack eyelets, 1 head tube can be limiting as far as new headsets are concerned.Other: It boggles my mind that a 220 pound rider would choose this bike or any cr-mo bike for this matter. This bike is much flexier than my cannodale, but the trade off is a much better ride. I think the stiffness factor is way overblown. | Overall Rating: |

The Giant ATX780 works great on the fire-roads and in the trails. I have an 18 frame, and put a Q21R shock, and Tioga Clipman pedals on it. The small tubing is great and has thus-far proven to be strong. The bike came well equipped with LX components throughtout the bike and XT rear derailer, Continental Cross Country and Leader Pro tires, and 800 X-ray gripshift. The whole package cost me $1400.00. Not a bad deal. I have found that the paint chips very easy. There should be a bottle of touch-up paint included with the bike. For some reason there is also two different size allen keys on the brake pads. (this looks like a dealer mistake).
