Description:XCR3000

Submitted by Barry Connolly a Weekend Warrior from Attleboro
Date Reviewed: October 29, 2000
Favoriate Trail:Vietnam, Milford, MA
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $1300.00
Purchased At:Sirois Bike Shop
Strengths:Excellent ride. Bought the bike 4 rides ago. Wanted the 2000, but settle for the 3000. 2000 out of stock and not shipping for another month. The GT i-drive has 4.5 inches of travel and stops on a dime. Very responsive. Other bikes seem to waste alot of energy bouncing up trails. I-drive is smooth like a hard tail on solid climbs and reacts well to jumping bumps when called upon.
Weaknesses:Weight
Similar Products Used:Specialized Enduro. For the $ a better bike, but can't beat the amount of travel.
Bottom Line:I-drive appears to be the most inovative full supension system to date.

Duration Product Used:1 Year
Strengths:My 1999 XCR-3000 has an amazing feeling of 'potential energy', meaning, it wants to take off the minute you sit down! Since I-drive allows for higher gears vs. other bikes under equal terrain, Bio-pacing can be minimized even further by grabbing a higher gear. (But it's not enough even to worry about!) The way the rear shock is set up, it seems to simulate a hard tail until you hit terrain needing rear shock absorbtion. This is a great advantage and mostly supports the "no bio-pacing" claim from GT.
I really looked at the amount of welds and what direction they're pointing when I first bought this bike. The look is clean and the geometry of the bike makes good common sense when viewing the bike for strength factors. "It looks strong!"
Weaknesses:The crankset looks heavy! (I'm jealous of the 2000 models' "Hollowtech" crankset.)and lighter rims. I'm glad I bought a 1999 model though since the color scheme for the 2000's is 'tacky' in my opinion! GT needs to provide a wider selection of color schemes for their products! "like all black!!". Also, only the XCR-2000 and up have stainless steel main bearings and anything lower has the teflon coated brass bearings which I've been warned about for water riding!
Similar Products Used:I was so impressed with the bike, I bought my Fiance` a XCR-4000!!!
Bike Setup:Stock! except for a gel seat and strapped pedals. "I'm building my courage for clip-ins!"
Bottom Line:The I-drive concept is a success. GT needs to concentrate on offering more diverse option packages going forward for each level of XCR. (i.e. color choice, crankset choice and shock choice (SID vs. Judy). Right now, there are no alternative options for different components for any XCR unless you customize yourself after purchase. As well, there is only two choices for colors. They should offer 6 choices; "2 of their original choices and 4 different 'solid' color choices (i.e. black, white, blue and red)"
All in all, I love my 1999 XCR-3000 and I urge people with "older model" dual shock bikes to give it a spin!

Bottom Line:
I JUST PICKED UP ONE OF THE NEW I-DRIVE BIKES FROM GT. MY LBS TOLD ME THAT IT IS THE FIRST ONE IN MI. THE RIDE IS NOTHING SHORT OF AWSOME! THE BIKE LOVES TO JUST GO FAST. I HAVE BEEN RIDING FULL SUSPINSION BIKES FOR 3 YEARS AND HAVE TRIED ALL KINDS, PERSONLY I LIKE MY SUPER V THE BEST BUT THE I DRIVE MY JUST END THAT. THE REAR END IS AS RIDGED AS THE SUPER V BUT WILL HAVE TO SEE HOW IT HOLDS UP WITH WEAR AND TEAR. I WAS BLOWN AWAY WITH JUST HOW MUCH ROCK SHOX HAS IMPROVED THE JUDY! IT WORKS AS GOOD IF NOT BETTER THEN MY Z1. GT SAYS THAT THE I DRIVE WILL NOT BIO-PACE WELL IT DOSE, NOT AS BAD AS THE LTS OR FSR AND REALY IT IS NOT THAT BAD BUT YOU STILL FEEL IT. WEIGHT IS 32.5 ON THE LARGE FRAME. MOST OF THE WEIGHT SEEM TO BE ON THE WHEELS AND Crankset. THE XCR3000 BEGS TO BE UPGRADED AND I HAVE ALREADY STRIPED MY HARDTAIL OF ITS XT COMPONETS AND MAVIC 517 RIMS AND OTHER LITE WEIGHT PARTS NOW IT IS DOWN TO 28.7 NOT BAD. GT PUT THE LOW LEVEL COMPONETS TO KEEP THE PRICE DOWN AND REALY NOTHING BUT THE Crankset NEEDED TO BE CHANGED. THE Crankset ARE THE BIGGEST PEICE OF S*** THEY SHIFT WHEN THEY WANT TO, AND ARE WEIGH MORE THEN MY XT WITH THE DX Pedal ON THEM. WELL GOING FOR A RIDE NOW TO GATHER MORE INFO ON THE RIDE. BUT FOR NOW IT SEEMS TO BE AT LEAST ON OF THE BEST BIKES ON THE MARKET TIME WILL TELL.
