Favoriate Trail:Woodbury Common, Devon
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $975.00
Purchased At:Soanes Cycles
Strengths:Ive hammered this bike (and myself) and its still going strong. The original forks (Judy DHO) are great, getting spongy but so bombproof I won't get rid of em
Weaknesses:creak....creak...(new bottom bracket)....creak...creak...(cursing)...creak...(libeal GT85)...creak...etc
Similar Products Used:Gt backwoods, Gt i-drive (tho never owned)
Bike Setup:Judy DHO,XTR shifting,DMR chainguard,XT v's,SPIN carbon wheelset,Orange superX bar,Bigfoot stem,Hutchison Jumbo treds
Bottom Line:This bike is the S**t.
SPIN carbon wheels help keep the weight down but add flex. Original forks are great, really bomb proof.
The real fun comes with the frame tho, GT have never beaten this frame design-the chainstay length helps distribute weight and allows a much higher riding position on the slopes than a bike with the rear wheel tucked right in-oh and one more thing-it looks sweet-like warm apple pie....

Purchased At:French guy from grenoble
Strengths:This can be used up and Downhill
Weaknesses:Rear suspension linkage, i bought this bike from a French Downhiller who also broke the rear suspension linkage, and this guy wasn't a dumb fat ass but a tiny frenchman.
He broke the linkage at the french downhill tracks.
Now i'm looking for this brooking part. It's the cup where the rockshox is in. So if anyone can help me.....
Similar Products Used:Koga miyata Full Suspension.Frame itself is strong. Noleen fork is not suitable for extreme downhill tracks

Date Reviewed: February 21, 2001
Favoriate Trail:locals
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $2000.00
Purchased At:online
Strengths:this is one bike that i can say is bomb proof. Unless you throw it off a cliff, it will stay in tact. i rife it hard and it has held up quite nicely. It desends vey well(depending on set up, and climbs well- again depending on set up.)
Weaknesses:bearings bearings bearings. upgrade to better ones or get wierd faces looking at you saying what the heck is that noise? The frame, mine a 98 gt sts 1500 ds is carbon, and carbon squeaks and creaks. this is not a major prob by all means but does tend to be quite enoying. Also, after awile, the rear shock will tend to lose ground so to say. to get a better feel and better adjustability, upgrade to a fox.
Similar Products Used:y22, lts, other gt i drives
Bike Setup:full xtr, x-vert super, xtr wheel set, some race face, chris king(the best)
Bottom Line:if u want a bike that is a "all around" type of bike, i guess this would be the one. It like i said depends how u soop it up. i went for the dh run and it will decend like crazy but it is quite hefty and does weigh a lot. it is a reliable bike and if you can still find one and are a die hard gt fanatic that wants a fun ride, i would recomend it. also it can be interchangable with 3-4 inches of rear travel by swithcing the little black chip in the back which is cool, and of couse the carbon frame. 4 flamin dookies for now

Favoriate Trail:ridge, lynn woods, MA
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Strengths:Heluva lot travel for a lightweight, good climbing frame. Tons of adjustability and high tech geek appeal. Headset supports triple crown forks. AWESOME FREERIDE BIKE!!!
Weaknesses:Like all the LTS / STS the bushings will annoy you and your riding buddies when they are singing, and they do sing. The stock rock shox super delux on the rear is absolute rubbish. I went thru three of the things before I replaced it with a syncros (flawless). But that degree of punishment never hurt any part of the frame / linkage. Minor point but, Red white and blue stickers on a black carbon and aluminum bike ? GT.. come on!?!?! I peeled the stickers off in the 1st 10 minutes. The lowest pivot location can cause a chain suck problem. Extracting the chain past that pivot can be agonizing.
Similar Products Used:GT Avalance / Zaskar, Kona Stab Primo. This bikes fits perfectly down the middle. Between a downhiller and a no travel X-country machine. that is why it is such a perfect freeride setup.
Bottom Line:Don't pay full price because there are good deals to be had. Upgrade the shock and start droppin' off 4 footers!! ENJOY IT!!!

Favoriate Trail:
un-named singletrack in Winterpark, CO
Duration Product Used:
1 Year
Strengths:
stiff frame, sweet rear suspension, great climber, turns good
Weaknesses:
maintenance intensive, sqeaks from linkage, not light(if that sort of thing bothers you)
Similar Products Used:
Trek Y-bike
Bike Setup:
full XTR, Mavic 521's, White Bros. DC118, WB Moto Mount and Ti bar, Titec Berserker DH saddle
Bottom Line:I bought this bike used a year ago and have ridden the absolute snot out of it. I have thrashed it in Moab, abused it in Winterpark and ridden it locally a minimum of 5 days a week throughout the year. The bike has performed wonderfully, although it has needed alot of adjustment and attention to maintenance items. I can confidently say that this bike has made me a better rider by allowing me to do things on it that were previously unadvisable. I love this bike and will probably hang on to it, although I would like to get a full-on DH rig before too long. I think everyone should have a 30lb. cross-country bike, mine will be an STS.

Weaknesses:
HIgh maintenance!!
Similar Products Used:
Specialized FSR, Joshua
Bike Setup:
full XT,Judy SL, Fox AIr vanilaR, Mavic 517's,Syncros.
Bottom Line:This bike is plush, but offers little pedal feedback. I have absolutely Hammered this bike and so far it has held up. This bike is not for you if you are mechanically inept or hate wrenching. Warning: Do not use the old sealed bearing upgrade on the top front seat pivot it WILL ruin your frame. There are roller bearing upgrades available now for this bike. I would'nt rather have any other full 'spen.

Bottom Line:I love it so far, it handles well on the ground and in the air and it's holding up fine, very plush yet responsive. I got it for an amazing price too($350 with about $100 worth of parts). I give it 5 flaming cornies for value alone.

Strengths:
Light weight, climbs excellent, awesome adjustment of rear shock, it's mean lookin!
Weaknesses:
Sqeaky pivots
Similar Products Used:
Zaskar, DBR, Klien Pulse, Specialized FSR.
Bike Setup:
Full XTR, RaceFace cranks, spinergy wheels, Judy SL
Bottom Line:Excellent bike!! Fast, and climbs incredibly. Mine is kinda heavy at 28 lbs because I have 636 pedals on there and a HEAVY wheelset. But with a light wheelset and normal pedals. It'll weigh 25.5 pounds easy, which is respectable. In my opinion better than a hardtail cause it keeps your rear in contact with the ground, especially on loose condition. Almost no pedal bobbing (it rear shock is set up right). I would recommend this bike to anyone.

Strengths:
No rocking while U are sitting, unless U have no technique :)

Weaknesses:
Sounds from the seatpost accentuate in the frame, so does the sound from the transfusions of the moving parts; rear shock. Only when it is dry, some oil/grease helps.
Similar Products Used:
Merida 970. No suspensioned bike. Only Carbon.
Bike Setup:
It's a costum. Most XT. Front, Judy SL LT.
Rear, Super De Luxe. KORE. Wheel: Spox
Bottom Line:I'm very pleased with it. But miss a bike which replys 100% in accelrations. (Plans to buy a GT Zakar LE). I did loose on screw on the rear staytransmission on a trip once. It was so far away that I had to cycle back. The bike was rocking much sideways, but nothing got broken. Strong! Hah!
And I got the missing shell with the screw soon as F*** .It's the best becycle, next to....

Bottom Line:

john sudworth should stop bumping the crack pipe so much. The gt blows away the can o ale raven any day . I kwow because I work at a shop and i know Cannondale. It has a Bouncy ride unless you run and air-oil shock. We all know how much of a pain in the rear air shocks are, dont we. The gt has smooth even travel through all 5 inches. As for breaking linkage parts Ive never seen that happen . Maybie you should put the rear wheel on the bike before you ride it. The only problem i have see with the GT is that the pivots squeak after a bit. GT now has sealed bearing pivots available. Later

Date Reviewed: August 4, 1998
Bottom Line:

I bought this frame for $899 at Wheelworld. I put a complete XTR package on it, and an Answer FS Ti fork. I like the way it just flows over the bumps, jumps and is easily ridden fast. I think it is not as good on technical, tight twisty trails though. It can really climb technical stuff really well on the other hand. It is really easy controlled on fast, hard jumps. It does make some odd noises here and there, and those bushings need cleaning and re-lubing often. Overall it seems to be a really good suspension bike. Although Wheelworld needs a little help with their customer service. They didn't send any instructions, or any literature to help me with maintenance or repair.

Bottom Line:

This bike SUX bigtime. If this is the poor standard of manufacturing that GT are going in for these days then... well, I hope they aint in this business for much longer. I busted the left parallel of the rear linkage my first time out on this bike, the saddle rails snaped next and thirdly the rear shock inter-pivot point f***** up! Luckily I managed to sell this piece of crap and went for a real bike... a RAVEN.

Bottom Line:

I bought a GT STS 1 about 6 months ago and it has been great! It climbs like nothing I have ever ridden
before. My last bike was a Schwinn Homegrown hardtail and I was amazed that the GT climbs
better than my hardtail. It is adjustable from 4 or 5 inches of travel, I have it with 4 and it is still very
plush. So far I haven't had any problems with it.

Submitted by Juergen a cross-country rider from Staten Island, NY
Date Reviewed: May 31, 1998
Bottom Line:
THe bike is great. When it's working, that is. I just keep mine in the shop and take it out when I want to ride it, then return it right after. Yes, it's a sweeet ride, but I've blown the rock shox deluxe rear shock, the frame / seatpost combo CREAKS CONSTANTLY and I am always taking out the bushings and greasing them. This lasts for about a ride, very frustrating. I've replaced the original white bushings with GT's new blue ones, but this didn't help. When I first got the bike, the bolts for the four bar linkage pieces behind the seatpost were too short, loosened and fell out during a downhill sting at Mount Snow, VT. GT sent replacement bolts that were longer. THe bike also lost several other suspension bolt combos in spite of having used blue, then red locktite. Eventually I wrapped each bolt with a ton of teflon plumbers tape, which has kept most bolts around, lately.
Anyway, I'm left wondering if a high maintenance four bar linkage ride is worth it. I'm getting a hard tail just so I have something reliable to ride.

Submitted by Vincent Gest a weekend warrior from Thousand Oaks, California
Date Reviewed: April 6, 1998
Bottom Line:

I have owned my Ridge Rocket for a little more than a year now and I can say without hesitation - NO
COMPARISON!! I've owned a suped-up Super V, fast Fat Chance Yo Eddy (hard tail), and ridden
several friends' full and front suspension models but nothing can touch the versatility and handling of this
one. Granted, she's had her problems but every bike does (or will). WORD TO THE WISE: 1) get rid of
the Judy SL! I've broken the cross-brace twice (once on a mildly rutted fire road turn!) I switched to the
White Brothers SC90 - matches the rear suspension better and is a lot stiffer. 2) I cracked the bottom
bracket aluminum lug (I only weigh 165# and am not rough on the frame-honest) GT is treating me right
though and replacing the frame! (some credit goes to my buddy John J. at Wheel World in Woodland
Hills). 3) Get some ceramic wheels! I went with Crossmax. Your brakes will work awesome without the
unnecessary weight of hydraulics. 4) Invest in some Gore cables - no more annoying cable stiction and
miss-shifts. After all my weenie chi-chi's, I managed to get the bike down to sub-25 pounds - not bad for
an all purpose machine!!
