Date Reviewed: April 16, 2004
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $90.00
Strengths:a very fast bike, quite comfortable and easy to steer, quite lightweight. front suspension very soft for a comfy ride
Weaknesses:bad grips, jumpy gears, MANY RIPPED JEANS from the exposed cog :/ (really should buy a guard) and the rims didnt last too long..
Similar Products Used:GT aggressor
Bottom Line:a very quick and manouverable bike, good for a nice little ride through a woodland shortcut on yer way to work. easy to wheelie and bunnyhops due to light weight and easily keeps up with cars :D

Favoriate Trail:beating traffic like a scalded cat
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $60.00
Purchased At:barnardo's childrens charity shop
Strengths:weight, build and weld quality (I'm a welder and Iknow how expensive an difficult the inert gas process is) gears are fairly good as are the veloceraptos.needs tweaking.
Weaknesses:pedals, tiny bars, soft rims, appetite for pads dated saddle, mediocre forks
Similar Products Used:any mtb that comes to hand- most recently an antique muddy fox, a specialized big hit (wow) and a dodgy old marin dh.plus my old palomar... so many bikes, such little time.
Bike Setup:new pedals (robbed off my marin) marzocci bomber x3's,saracen headset and dh bars, crud catchers,3rd set of pads.
Bottom Line:this bike's become a fairly good bit of kit.the winter seems to beast up the alloy bits and it needs regular care.Im going to try fitting a front disk sometime, and after that i might manufacture a swingarm and strip the rest of the back end off to fit it. easier done than said.if you want to fit a disk then get the kit and approach a sympathetic welder who has gas tungsten inert gas equipment.remember to rub down and heat the area where the mounting studs go before welding! all in all, im very happy with this bike after sus forks were fitted

Favoriate Trail:new forest
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $500.00
Purchased At:cycleworld
Strengths:the frame is stong, reliable, light, durable and robust, quite a good weight as well. group set is ok
Weaknesses:its not the lightest bike on the market but for money its worth every penny.it also could do with a rear disc brake mount
Similar Products Used:ive tried better GTs and compaired to them it wasnt too bad at all
Bike Setup:if your gonna upgrade, ive done this with mine : full deore groupset, nicer seat, mazocchi mxc air 100 fork, maxic rims (good cross country ones),panaracer xc fire pro tyres, yeti hardcore grips and a club roost riser bar. and also some nice light weight clip on pedals, and u could try a front deore cable dsc brake
Bottom Line:the frame is cracking quaility and GT team colours look best, the group set it has is ok but the front chain set is slightly too small, starting rst forks are nice once beded in and the riding position is brilliant due to the the good stem and riser bar. good all round cross country frame. grips are really nice too!!!!!!!!

bike would suit any beginner cross country rider

Strengths:frame is excellent light yet tough, velociraptors give good grip but clog in mud.I have had some good falls but the bike didn't suffer.
Weaknesses:suntour crank, rst forks(no damping and very basic)original brakes were not up to real bad weather and ate a set of pads in a weekend
Similar Products Used:none
Bike Setup:24 speed conversion,xt rear mech a great improvement.lx v brakes(couldn't stop on a wet downhill before upgrade)
selle royal saddle.fsr cranks.lxbottom bracket.best of all judy forks.and fitting a riser bar and shorter ahead type stem
Bottom Line:excellent value rugged and reliable, lightish(new wheels would be my next upgrade(the frame is the equivalent of the zaskar)

Weaknesses:the rear derailer breaks alot and the shocks bottom out to easy.
Similar Products Used:lots of bikes
Bike Setup:shimano deor rear derailer, sync 285 shoks on the front
Bottom Line:i think the 98'palomar Gt is a good bike for a beginning rider and intermidiate. when i got the bike i was looking for somthing cheap. if you are to advanced you will have lots of problems with the bike. smooth riding and comfterble. i sugest this bike for street riding.

Favoriate Trail:
the Deep End
Duration Product Used:
more than 3 years
Strengths:
V-brakes, solid Aluminum Frame, Veloci Raptors, I got it second hand cheap ($175cdn)and and its almost brand new.
Weaknesses:
Peice of S#%T crank (replaced it), cheap wheels.
Similar Products Used:
GT Tempest, GT XCR 4000, all judy's, jetts, rst(sh!t).
Bike Setup:
Arrowhead with new crank and Marzocchi Bomber Z-5 shocks
Bottom Line:This is a solid bike that needs upgrades but will get you buy til you do, only reason I bought it though is cause I ripped a friend off and got it cheap. Marzocchi Bombers rock on this bike and all other shocks are F&#$@!G pieces of S&%T.
