Description:The Z.1 freeride series represents the pinnacle in long travel single crown design. The first Z.1, introduced in 1996, started the freeride movement by allowing riders to perform beyond their previous capabilities which were hampered by poorly performing products. The new Z.1 is made for riders who still love the up hill climbs as much as the downhill’s and allaround riding performance is the difference between a good ride and a great one. We feel that the new Z.1 freeride series unleashes performance demanded by today’s cutting edge riders.

$282.00 | | Strengths: | Good looking...
Very good for its intended application... that's freeride. You can use the fork for XC... but don't comment on its weight since it is not inteded for XC, okay? | | Weaknesses: | None... | | Similar Products Used: | Manitou Sherman Firefly (2omm thru axle), zoke Drop off, Manitou Travis | | Bike Setup: | Voodoo Shango, FSA gravity lite crankset, sram rocket shifter pods, shimano ultegra cassette and rear deraluer, shimano lx front derailuer, sun rims mtx rims, maxxis hookworm tires, thomson elite x4 stem, da bomb seat post and handle bar (31.8 mm), hayes 9 carbon disc brakes (6" rotors), Selle success saddle, crank brothers 50/50xx pedals... | | Bottom Line: | This fork is sick... the guy below who post on a negative review is gay. Why do the hell he purchased this Z1 DO if he's an XC racer? He's using the fork in its wrong application. This fork is not for weight wennies. This is intended for freeriding. Do respect the fork. If you are a freerider, surely, you'll love this fork. If your an XC racer, you're wrong in choosing this baby... your a dumb a@#... so for XC application, choose the marathon series or any zoke series that is intended for XC. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$200.00 | | Purchased At: | Ebay | | Strengths: | Its very strong especially since 20 mm forks are all the rage (i stick with qr though) It has survived a couple crashes and handled them like a champ. Very good for freeride and uses up just the right amount of travel which is essential when you only have 5 inches. Super efficient on the trails, not too heavy-not too light a terrific al around fork. Not too complicated and the prices nowadays on these forks are pretty low | | Weaknesses: | Its a little flexy but nothing very noticeable. Could use a preload knob instead of air. | | Similar Products Used: | None | | Bike Setup: | Norco VPS buzz (soon to be atomik) vuelta excalibur rims, avid bb7, truvativ hussefelt, sram x-7 | | Bottom Line: | These forks are fantastic. They are confidence inspiring and really handle well for a five inch travel fork. The first 2 or 3 inches is soft (can be changed with preload) and then in the last couple of inches it really stiffens up to soften big hits-which it is fully capable of taking even with a 200 pound rider riding it. I would buy this again but i'd probably upgrade to the drop-off 1 or fr, but this is basically the same only with air preload. Terrific fork for anyone from xc-er to all mountain rider to free-rider. Would also make a sick 4x dirtjump and urban fork. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$225.00 | | Purchased At: | Performancebike.com | | Strengths: | 20mm thru, 32 mm stanchions, stealthy black, cheap, air preload, compression adjuster, rebound adjuster. | | Weaknesses: | The paint absolutely sucks. It's nice and stealthy black from the crown to the 20mm thruaxle. But, the paint is very bad. The stickers were peeling right out of the box, so I decided to remove them. I don't mind that part, because I hate stickers anyway. I guess I should have used a hairdryer or something, but they came off so easy. The part I minded was the paint coming off with the stickers. | | Similar Products Used: | Rockshox Pilot, Rockshox Tora 302, Marzocchi MZ2, Marzocchi Drop Off 1 (demo'd) | | Bike Setup: | Mountain Cycle Rumble w/this fork, not complete yet... | | Bottom Line: | I will post another review in the future detailing the performance of this fork. For now, it will get 3 chilis. Marzocchi still has a chance to redeem itself in my mind, but this kind of problem I don't expect from a 50$ fork. I don't care if they have to paint magnesium, and it's hard to do; this is unacceptable. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

| | Bike Setup: | 1998 Steel hardtail, Hope Mono M4 | | Bottom Line: | the Z1s and the the Sids are two "benchmark" single-crown forks that i compare the rest with. They both do well for thier own prupose.
Sid is for the climber, a serious xc racer or rider, who's concerned with climbing hills fast, thus finish fast, overall. We have a 21# al. hardtail with a Sid. My 145# son and I, at 205#, both like the Sid. Sid rocks for it's light weightness and performs well enough for overall xc riding...but when "push comes to shove" and I'm wanting to swing around switchbacks with drops and rock gardens on narrow single tracks on a real mountain trail with cliffs over rushing rapids, such as over the Downieville River or the Pauley Creek, I'd prefer the extra stiffness and control of a Z1.
If you are (or is apsiring to be) racing at the top 30% of Experts or Semi-Pro in XC races or if your are not strong enough that a two or three extra pounds are you bike is going to affect how well you can climb hills then go and enjoy the Sid.
Z1 is still the "all-mountain" or "free-riding" xc fork for those who want more confidance on aggresive & technical descends. rarely do riders get hurt on a climbs, but it's them gnarly descends that can snap your collar bone or your wrist: when the going get tough, the tough gets going with Z1s.
Fox is making great forks and so are the others, but the Z1 has established its yearly eminance as an all around performance fork. Now with an ETA, a Z1 rider can better enjoy the climbs. Compared to dual-crown forks, a Z1 is feathery light weight.
Think of it like this: you're a burly gladiator...sure you may survive with a short sword (Sid) 'cause you're skillful & tough, but with a better fitting long sword (Z1) you'll have more confidence...hence you'll be better prepared for battle.

I like the clean lines without the V-brake mounts. The air adjust pre-load lets you tune the handling to your weight and style. And it never leaks - 4 months later and still the same air pressure. Did I say strong? I'm 6'3 and 240lbs and race BMX Cruiser. I've had bad landings and cased a roller at full speed - it didn't faze this thing. It just plows right on through.
There is very little flex in the tubes and the crown. Hard cornering is very predictible, doesen't twist and dig in like the RockShox. It smooths out the rough surfaces and keeps the tire in contact with the ground. Most suspension forks are mushy and suck up energy, this one feels as efficient as a rigid fork. Easily the best single crown fork for the money. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$310.00 | | Purchased At: | friendly neighborhood bikeshop | | Strengths: | -stiffness(it's very hard to bottom out even without air pressure!) -color(stanchions are bad-ass black!!!!) -the decals are awesome! -not too pricey considering it's a freeride fork. | | Weaknesses: | none! none! none! none!!!!! | | Similar Products Used: | marzocchi exr pro | | Bike Setup: | Cherryboomb '03 frame, Z1 DO2, XTR front and rear derailleurs, LX cranksets, xt cogsets, avid mechanical brakes, avid SD7 levers, SRAM attack gripshifts, raceface Diabolus stem, Mavic 223 rims | | Bottom Line: | Buy this fork! I highly recommend it to any one who does technical trailriding ang freeriding. It's absouletly amazing! It can take any kind of punishment, especially when doing big drops! If only the ratings has more than 5 flamin' chilis.... I'll give it a 100 flamin' chilis!!!! It's made by the leading fork suspension maker..... MARZOCCHI!!!!! You're the best! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |
