For most of the riding I do this was fine, but when things got rough it was difficult to hold the line. Then while riding in Big Sky it dropped all the way through the travel and stayed there. This is as much my fault as RS, I had neglected to check the oil level. Thing is that I never had to do any maintance on my old Judy's and I road them on ther same trails. The oil leaks started the summer I got it, always weaping, never gushing. The adjustment knob broke two weeks after I got it. RS sent me a new one thru my LBS in pretty good time. It wasn't torqued on properly from the factory and when I tightened it the thing crumbled.Like I said, the final demise of this thing was my fault, due to poor maintance. The thing is Marzocchi's, Fox and even some Manitou's go maintance free for years. Currently, I'm running a '99 z1 bomber on my tracer with great results. This expeirence definitly drove me away from RS when it came time to replace it. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$350.00 | | Purchased At: | Pricepoint.com | | Strengths: | Tough, strong, looks evil. (Black) | | Weaknesses: | Lock out gives @ 20mm of LOOSE travel when U-turn is fully extended. Stock spring is junk, way to soft. | | Similar Products Used: | Manitou elite. | | Bike Setup: | Weyless SP, this shock, Maintou QRL, XTR wheelset, XT drivetrain, eggbeaters. Bonty post, bars, and cranks. | | Bottom Line: | This is an awesome all-mountain fork. I have had it for a year, and beat on it pretty heavily. No complaints at all here. I weigh about 190, so the stock spring is getting replaced sometime soon with the stiffest one offered. Bottoming out has not been a big problem, but the softness does bother me sometimes. I usually set the travel all the way down for climbing. Lockout works very, very well at that setting, but if you try to lock it out above 100mm, it stil travels down like 10-20 mm, then locks out. This is annoying as hell, and can be hard of your wrists. I don't know if it's just mine, but i have heard it reported by others in the past. Going down, even though the spring is a little soft, i have not bottomed out super hard very much. At my wieght, i'd say the fork is very strong, as i nearly snapped my old forks tubes while braking hard going downhill. The U-turn adjuster is sweet, takes @ 3 seconds to increase/decrease travel. This makes customizing your ride very easy. The rebound adjustment is also pretty easy to work with, although it is located on the bottom of one of the tubes, like most forks. Overall, this fork is a quality, tough fork for all mountain use. It won't take the abuse that a full freeride fork will, and it definately won't be seen on too many XC race bikes, but it is a do-it-all fork that is perfect for the majority of us out there who ride trails for fun, and like to do a little of everything. But the sh*t, you'll be happy. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Discs | | Bottom Line: | This is an update from my 05/16/03 review. Alas, I have violated the “one review” clause (again), but product durability and longevity are really important to those of us with limited funds.
After more than a year of riding (badly), I present the following report. My lowers have scary rock dings that look like they should completely puncture the tubing. One of the metal Rock Shox badges is gone. I’ve never gotten a full five-inches of travel. I’m too fat (185lbs + Camelbak) for The Firm Kit springs, and should seek out The Extra Firm (i.e. German Beer Drinker’s) Kit. Perhaps this new spring kit will solve my travel deficit issues.
However, this fork still works really well! Travel is, and has been, exceptionally smooth and predictable. There’s some flex, but nothing too ridiculous for a fork that doesn’t weigh six pounds. I’ve only needed one complete breakdown/overhaul cleaning. In other words, I give this fork high marks for reliability and real world abuse. For the money, Rock Shox has done a nice job.

If the rider weight and oil isnt in sync, you'll get a slurping sound on the rebound. | | Similar Products Used: | Zocchi Z1, Manitou mars elite. | | Bike Setup: | Steel hardtail | | Bottom Line: | I have 200 miles on this fork and have enjoyed it. I am glad it is on my bike. I ride and race aggressive XC. This fork is a bit much for a steel hardtail, but set at 90mm, it soaks up everything. If I set it at more than 90mm, it affects the effective top tube and the bike's front end stands up too much. The lockout feature is nice, but it is down on the crown. THe other day I reached for it half way down a hill, forgetting that I had left it locked. I missed the knob and drifted off into the woods and went christmas tree shopping. The factory springs are a bit soft for a 190 lb rider. I am going to keep this fork and get heavier springs. I wouldn't pass up on this fork if you get the chance to buy one for a good deal. $330.00 | | Purchased At: | Supergo | | Strengths: | U-turn, stiff, responsive, good weight for the travel, looks great in disc-specific form, adjustable lockout. This fork is great for average to aggressive XC and trail rides and moderate DH. I used to ride XC three times a week but now I'm just a weekend warrior who's into good climbs and beautiful singletrack but not balls-out downhills -- sorry, but I have bills to pay and crashing isn't conducive to that. This fork is a dream -- plush, responsive, stiff. The U-turn feature is very useful for climbing and descending. The progressive lockout is nice for when I'm too lazy to turn the fork travel down before a short climb, but lockouts don't make or break suspension. The Manitou is a bit soft with the stock springs so I put it on my girlfriend's bike -- it's perfect for her. The Fox is beefy but I'm not that impressed with it. It's a good fork, but I actually prefer the Psylo cuz it's as beefy to me (5'6", 150-155 lbs) and the U-turn and lockout are great bonuses. The Cannondale Headshox on my Scalpel 800 just plainly stinks. Surely, it's stiff but the 2-inch travel and bone-jarring ride make it a stinker. The 4-inch travel Jake on my Jeckyl is a winner -- light, stiff, responsive. Peace to y'all and let's enjoy the outdoors in any manner without destroying the place we're enjoying. Thanks. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$309.00 | | Purchased At: | new supergo shop in tucson | | Strengths: | U Turn. lockout. Compression and rebound adjustments work. Nice plush fork.
| | Weaknesses: | No preload adjust for the springs. That means if your sag is too much, tough. There is nothing you can do except get new springs. Installing new springs requires complete disassembly. You can't slide them in and out from the top cap like the old judys. | | Similar Products Used: | 01 Marzocchi z2 x fly. 96 Judy. Rented lots of bikes with different forks. | | Bike Setup: | Santa Cruz superlight. | | Bottom Line: | I loved my marzocchi but this fork is more plush and it is great to have the travel option. Even at 80 mm, it absorbs more shock than my old fork. For going downhill, 100 - 110 mm works great and will make you braver and will let you go faster. On uphills, the plushness allows you to roll over rocks without losing momentum compared with a harsher fork. I weigh 185 and the springs are not too bad. I might eventually get stiffer ones, but I am not bottoming, just sagging a little more than recommended, but absorbing everything great. I thought about buying the manitou black elite, but the adjustment is only 80 or 100, and the 80 compresses the spring so much it is more like a lock out than a travel adjustment. I use the travel adjust every ride. 80 mm is not good for every situation, and neither is 100 or more. I couldn't go back to a fork with fixed travel. I like the progressive feel of air springs, but the plushness of coil on smaller hits and uphills is really nice too. Buy it. I would probably give it a 4.5 with points off for no preload, and the spring rate (I think you should be able to order the right springs for your weight you buy the fork and not have to upgrade a brand new fork). | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |
