$400.00 | | Purchased At: | Wades | | Strengths: | Good long travel fork. well designed. | | Weaknesses: | way too much flex. managed to snap one of the upper stanchons. these forks need a brace or something. suprisingly enough marzocchi have reduced the travel for their newer forks, probably because they know there's a problem... | | Similar Products Used: | marzocchi z1 drop offs. good fork with the benefit of a brace, little or no flex! | | Bike Setup: | expensive! | | Bottom Line: | be careful, be very careful! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

from windsor, on, can Date Reviewed: May 14, 2004 | | Favoriate Trail: | secret | | Duration Product Used: | Tested or demo'ed only | | Purchased At: | demo only | | Strengths: | It looks good. | | Weaknesses: | -no stiffer than over-cooked spaghetti -less travel than other "freeride" single crown forks - pressfit crown and lowers | | Similar Products Used: | 2002 dji, 2002 z1fr, 2003 z1fr, sherman firefly | | Bike Setup: | 2002 holeshot- 2.35 maxis highroller, raceface, hayes | | Bottom Line: | This is an absolutely terrible product; it has been a success because of it's marketing, not it's engineering. The idea that a fork with narrow, 30 mil stanchions and a non-existent brace could be stiff encough to corner well through rough terrain is ridiculous. In fact, the fork requires its riders to develop a modified style of riding: learn a trail, know exactly when all corners are approaching, and start turns while riding buddies with z1's and shermans are still accelerating.
Performace aside, let's talk durability. At the end of 2 days riding at porcupine ridge (I borrowed a friend's brodie equiped with shiver sc's to compare it to my balfa), one of the the press-fit lowers to which the hub fastens became un-pressed. Oil began to leak out,and I had to pay the 300 to have marzocchi fix them. This was with no drops over 3 feet. The crown also creaked like marzocchi crowns do.
Be smart. Buy a product that works, not one that just looks cool. Shermans are probably the best. They are lighter than shivers, way stiffer, stronger, and with 130 mil of progressive travel (less bottoming). Z1's and dj forks are also good, but can get creaky crowns. Psylos' performance is inferior to that of the z1's and shermanns, but they are light and are much stiffer and than the shivers. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$300.00 | | Purchased At: | local bike store | | Strengths: | the action of the suspension helps climb hills as well as nail drop offs. This suspension ROCKS | | Weaknesses: | can intefere with brake cable, causing a clicking noise which can be fixed, no biggie. Also a little heavy. | | Similar Products Used: | rock shox boxxer | | Bike Setup: | normal setup | | Bottom Line: | This is a great fork, its design is remenicint of mottocross suspension. This makes it practically bomb proof. The only problem was the weight. This makes monos a little harder to achieve | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$275.00 | | Purchased At: | Goldstream Ave. Bicycles! | | Strengths: | inverted design, keeps oil where the stanchions need it! Strong as hell, really plush. | | Weaknesses: | I bought it used mind you, but the guy I bought it off said he never used it much, BUT the ecc works at only about 50% and is REALLY expensive to replace. Also, it takes for ever to get the front wheel on and off. | | Similar Products Used: | Z.1 Drop Off, '00, and '01, Z.5 series, rock shox psylo, etc. | | Bike Setup: | 02 norco 4by, D321's, hayes hydro's, shiver sc (great slalom machine) | | Bottom Line: | Great fork, but I think the ecc should be recalled. Strong, sleek and sexy, and a great short travel fork! A bit pricy when bought new, unless you go to GOLDSTREAM AVENUE BICYCLES! (in colwood, bc) | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$325.00 | | Strengths: | Suspension action is terrific. Works very very well. | | Weaknesses: | I don't really like the axle system on this one. The end cap is made of really soft Al and stripped out on me (locking the wheel in the fork). Sometimes the fork is a bit loud (but I'm used to air forks so I think the spring is just doing its thing) | | Similar Products Used: | Old school Boxxer, 2000 Z1 | | Bike Setup: | .243 Racing HT running 24/26 w/ a 2.7 Minion and 2.6 Gazz Jr. | | Bottom Line: | I really like how this fork works and I believe that's what is most important (not how much you can see the thing deflect when you test it in a non-riding environment). The fork is really sensitive to small stuff and still takes the big hits just fine for me. I think the fork would rock paired up with some rear suspension but for now it is kicking ass on the .243. I accidentally overtightened the axle end cap and it stripped out trying to remove it. Called Marz and had an end cap on the way in no time at all. Ended up having to file/grind the old one off, which was some bit of a pain but now I know not to overtighten the end cap. What has been working for me is mounting the wheel, tightening the cap to snug + 1/4 turn, bouncing it a couple times, then tightening the clamp bolts. Performance is great. It's a bit heavy but the whole bike is heavy so I'm not going to whine. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$426.00 | | Purchased At: | The Bike Zone on Lakeshore Road. | | Strengths: | Smooth supple travel, killer looks, ECC control. thru-axel is full clamp for stiff handling. | | Weaknesses: | thru-axel is a bit cumbersome if you change your tires to fix a flat or what not. | | Similar Products Used: | 2001 psylo SL | | Bike Setup: | 2001 brodie holeshot, XT everywhere, intense mag 30 rims, funn full on bar, avid 8 inch discs. race face cockpit. waiting for the new eggbeater platform pedals!!! | | Bottom Line: | This is a review for a 2002 shiver sc. I was riding it for about 6 months when the upper crown and upper tubes developed ALOT of play. Whenever I would apply the brakes the wheel would veer to the left. Apparently the cryofit came loose. I sent it back to the factory and the turn around time was OK. Took about 4 weeks to get back. But they replaced the crown and upper tubes with '03 parts and also new '03 sticker kit. Now it performs amazing and I'm glad I bought the shiver because of the warranty and service.
Performance wise if you set it up correctly with 10w oil you should be fine. I weigh 195lbs so this is fine for me with the stock medium spring inside. Just play around with the rebound adjuster to fine tune the hit response.
5 flaming chillis for value and overall because I got a great deal on it from The Bike Zone and it performs f*cking AMAZING. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$370.00 | | Purchased At: | Supergo | | Strengths: | THIS IS A KILLER FORK! IT HAS LOOKS SOOOO NICE BUT IT ALSO HAS THE PREFORMANCE TO GO ALNOG WITH IT. IT HAS THE CLASSIC BOMBER FEEL, SUPER PLUSH. IT'S DAMPENING IS PERFECT IT DOSENT HAVE THE HARSH OVER DAMPENED FEEL OF OLDER BOMBERS. THE ECC IS VERY HELPFUL AND WORKS GREAT. THE FORKS FLEX IS NOT AS MUCH OF A PROBLEM AS MOST PEOPLE MAKE IT OUT TO BE. WHEN YOU RIDE THE FORK ON THE TRAIL YOU DON'T NOTICE IT. ALSO IF YOU BUY THE FORK FROM SUPERGO OR UNIVERSAL YOU GET ONE HECK OF A DEAL. YOU CAN'T BEAT ITS LOOKS AND PREFORMANCE FOR UNDER 400$. | | Weaknesses: | HMMMMM, THIS IS HARD. I GUESS IT COULD BE STIFFER. THERE IS FLEX, I WILL NOT LIE; BUT IT DOES NOT NEGATIVLEY AFFECT THE FORKS TRAIL PREFORMANCE. | | Similar Products Used: | DJ'S, Z1'S, Z3'S, Z5'S, PSHYLOS, BLACKS, | | Bike Setup: | KONA ROAST, RACE FACE CRANKS, 9.0SL, SHIVER SC. | | Bottom Line: | OVER ALL I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMEND THIS FORK. IF YOU CAN GET A DEAL ON IT LIKE I DID THERES NOT A FORK THAT CAN TOUCH ITS VALUE AND PREFORMANCE. THE RETAIL 600$ PRICE IS OVERPROCED AND I WOULD NOT SAY THAT YOU SHOULD SPEND THAT MUCH ONE IT MAINLY BECAUSE SO MANY SITES ARE OFFERING SUPER DEALS ON IT. IF YOU WANT A GREAT FORK THAT CAN STAND UP TO HARD ABUSE AND STILL GET YOU UP THE HILL IN DECENT TIME CHECK OUT THE SHIVER. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$350.00 | | Purchased At: | Spokes in wheaton | | Strengths: | Really stiff forward to back. Looks realy cool, M crown system, cnc'd uppers, 20mm axle. Really smooth once u break it in. | | Weaknesses: | A tiny bit of tortional flex but all upside down forx do it. Call me crazy but I like the feeling of a freeride fork that doesn't ride like an xc. Besides, you can't really feel it riding. | | Similar Products Used: | Jr. T, Sylo, Boxxer, Fox, | | Bike Setup: | Giant AC frame. MRP, XTR, Dura ace rear. Goetz Industries stem and chainring. | | Bottom Line: | This fork is pretty darn cool. Plush, stiff where it should be, and looks pretty spiff. IF you freeride or do northshore, its for u. If u downhill its not. People make a big deal about the tortional flex but it does't really matter. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$350.00 | | Purchased At: | Ged The Head | | Strengths: | Don't listen to Boxxer Boy down there, if they bottomed off a three foot drop, he must either be built like a doorman, or the forks have been set up badly.....if you find that you are bottoming them...play with the oil weight or spring weights....I have been riding Marz forks for years and they are way more reliable than Rockshox, Boxxers are a good race fork, but Marz are generally stronger and easier to tune.. | | Weaknesses: | None, I have performed a number of drops and gaps on these forks and they are great....they track well and contrary to unpopular opinion they don't bottom off a three foot gap....look at my bike...do you think I,m ridin' XC on this thing...its like a BMX with 7" of travel and it rules...it would kill boxxers.. | | Similar Products Used: | Manitou Dorado SC (nice but soooooooooo expensive they had to stay where they were, lots of other single crown forks from Risse, Rockshox, White Bros, Manitou, | | Bike Setup: | Brookyln Mini Link + Avalanche DHS, Shiver SC, Azonic, Thomson, Atomic Labs 24" etc | | Bottom Line: | Sort out your kit and your kit will sort you out. These forks are great, if they are good enough for Dylan Clayton (uk bmx legend, and now BSX legend) they are good enough for you! They are also lovely to look at and can be utilised to wrap around the heads of the uninformed review writers! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |
