Geax Barro Race Tire

Barro Race

The Geax Barro Race Tire excels where speed really counts. The low central knobs provide low rolling resistance and work best in dry hardpack conditions, and raised side lugs let you lay the bike over in the turns. Choose the super-light Aramid bead folding version when you're running tubes and low weight is the top priority, or grab the TNT version when you'd rather go tubeless and need a little more sidewall protection.

This review concerns the Geax Barrow Mountain 2.3 which came from Huck&Roll for dirt cheap. They replaced the Rocket Rons on my Spark which were getting a bit tired. The trails they see most are rocky, loose and dry as a popcorn fart. They weighed in at 620 grams on my postal scale, not heavy but not race light. That adds about 100 grams per wheel but I can't say I notice a big difference accelerating compared to the RRs. Measured 2.07" width mounted tubeless (Stan's) to Easton Havoc wheels compared to 2.04" for the '2.2' RRs, in other words, no effective difference. Big difference in traction, as these tires climb without drama. Even when re-starting halfway up a loose hill, they grab and go. When they do break loose, it is controlled and predictable. Excellent braking with the same predictability. Lateral grip is OK but again, very predictable. Very nice sidewall damping eliminating the ping, ring and bounce that always annoyed me with the RRs. That and the larger block tread are probably worth the extra 100 grams. Smooth rolling on hard surfaces. Aired-up right away and seated without a fight. Running 30psi front and 35psi rear. Highly recommend for tough duty on a cross-country bike being ridden too hard over unforgiving trails. My kid rides Kenda Nevegals on his All Mountain rig and eyes these Geax suspiciously; not enough meat there for him. My grandson rides Panaracer Fire FR which look like motocross tires to me and he laughs at my cute little tires. It's all about results, kids.
