Strength:

solid plush fork with thru axle

Weakness:

none

just as good as fox. get this fork if you find it used. They are super durable. I just changed the oil for the first time in 3 yrs, oops, and it still works great. Positive and negative air chambers, 140 mm travel.

Set the foodgate right and it's a nice platform with a threshold of your choosing. That way you don't have to worry about the lockout switch.

Strength:

1.maxle
2.stiffness
l3.ooks
4.easy adjust knobs on top crown
5.easy air pressure adjustments

Weakness:

1.rebound tuning is a little difficult as there are no clicks when using an allen wrench and I took off my red knob to prevent it from falling out and or getting broken off. If you turn the rebound a little bit you won't feel it in the garage but you will on the trail so keep that in mind.
2. fork makes a little knock noise while it bobs up and down on climbs unless it is either fully extended or fully shrunk down via the u-turn.
3. a-to-c feels a hair to high on the spot for me so I dial it down about 5-8mm. you lose some travel but the bike handles rolling terrain better IMO. This is a good reason to buy the u-turn version.
4. kinda heavy compared to other 140mm forks
5. expensive.

Nice fork. not perfect but pretty damn good. IMO rock shox stuff used to be crap but this fork is starting to change my mind. Come talk to me again in another year or two and we'll see if this thing lasts like my 5 year old fox talas or my 7 year old z2 atom

Weakness:

none-travel not adjustable

Buy this fork- you won't regret it. However you should get the 454 u-turn. There has been a bunch of times when it would be nice to crank the travel down to 100mmm. This a perfect all mountain/light freride fork.

Light, Enough Travel for most of the trail, easy setup especially the damping less than a full turn. Give me smooth ride ^_^

Weakness:

there is a unknow "thing" at the bottom of the steer tube which can take it off... I get use to use the UFO (a DH acc. that to tide up the bottom and the hander stem) I can use it at this fork.

I like this fork so far ..... love it ...... but why ROCK SHOX web side doesn't provide any way that we can write an email to ask them some question ??? And if any one who know how to take off the "thing" at the bottom of the steer tube ..... please tell me .....

Strength:

Maxle, platform damping and weight

Weakness:

Lockout dial is too light

Lovely buttery travel and light weight. It feels stiff and inspires confidence.
On tight single track, the lockout dial keeps getting pushed around by brush and locking out the fork. This is due to the lockout dial being much too light to rotate. The pop-lock would cure this but seems it a real design problem.

Strength:

Good Solid Fork. The 20mm thru axle (maxle) is easier to use than a reg. skewer. one of the lighter all mtn forks out there. Lots of adjustments.

Weakness:

The negative air pressure can not be greater than the possitive or it will suck the fork down. That being said, I followed the set-up manual for a 180lb rider, and backed off the neg. pressure by 15psi. and this thing soaks up the small little roots and rocks but can still handle large jumps and 3-5 foot drops with ease!

If you are an agressive trail rider that likes to wander off the beaten path and bomb the rock gardens, this fork is for you. On the other side, if you are a weekend warrior just looking for a smooth ride, this fork will deliver, and take you to the next level as you improve.

Adjustability, maxle 20mm qr, color, stiff. Quality parts.

Weakness:

Damn thing will not return to full travel after winddown!!!!
After my first ride I had to send it back!!! Heard that there are issues with the air cartridge and seals.
This fork cost to much $$$ to have air seal and air cartridge issues on and air fork!! I thought sram had straightened out rock shox. I was assured by the tech the issue would be resolved. We shall seeeeeeee!

Haven't owned a rock shox fork for a long time because of dependability issues, heard sram was all about quality. The parts are much better, hope they fix my fork correctly or it is going back to jensons.
You have to expect hard riding on a fork like this, so it should be built to hold up, not bread down after 1 ride!!

Strength:

Looks, stifness, features, plushness and grin factor.

Weakness:

Absolutely none.

I've only used these for about 3hrs today in the Surrey Hills and can honastly say that these forks are astonishing!! Strong words but having used Fox's Talas RL for the past 3yrs they are like night and day compared. The Talas's i felt always let my old Spes Enduro down and it was worse when i bought my dream new Turner 5 Spot, they've always felt like they were damped with saw-dust!! These though for an air fork straight outa the box feel so plush( not bedded in yet) and i can now at last have sag, this and ive only set up the positive and negative air chamber to the recomended preasure and they just feel so plush. The Talas's never ever felt plush, how ever you set them up! The Maxle is fabulous, so easy to use and gives amazing stiffness which means fast turn-ins are now an absolute joy. Blasting down fast rough/rooty trails on the Talsas's always gave me a sense of impending doom, sorta 50/50 make it/crash feeling, but the same trails at the same speed with the pikes and all you get is a huge grin on ya face blasting through lines i'd have never gone through before. Then there's the motion control/floodgate/pop-loc adjust, very clever but really i'll probably leave them in the open position maybe using some lock out on the climbs. Bottom line, if your an aggressive XC rider(not downhiller) this is an amazing fork that feels like a coil Marzocchi but weighs hardly anything, buy it!!

Scott   Weekend Warrior [Nov 15, 2006]
Strength:

This fork performs very well in all situations, it soaks up evrything the trail dishes out without any surprises. The Maxel just flat works and provides a very stiff front end that tracks without regard to the trail conditions, speed load etc. Build quality appears to be first rate and the entire package plainly stated looks and performs great.

Weakness:

For my riding style the stated air pressure recomendations are too firm. I lowered the air pressure and dialed it in based on sag vs rider weight and the fork came alive soaking up everything I can throw at it.

I admit I am no expert but once you get this fork dialed in for your weight and riding conditions it is a pleasure. The travel adjustment allows you to modify the climbing and decending abilities of your bike.

SO far the quality seems to be first rate and the Maxel paired with Mavic tubeless wheels and tires really provides a very predictable front end. I don't have any experience with compeating Fox forks and I understand they work very well but based on my experience this is one solid fork
