ilakano   Cross Country Rider [Apr 08, 2004]
Strength:

Excellent coverage of racing in the US and worldwide. Product reviews are well done.

Weakness:

The editorial staff's bias against mountain bikers is obvious and annoying. From the lame O'Grady cartoons to the hot/not section, its clear the editors and writers at VeloNews have no respect for mountain bikers.

A good but not great magazine.

Strength:

Awesome race coverage with fantastic pictures of major racing events.. The ESPN of cycling...

Weakness:

Doesn't come out every day.....pictures could use a bit more color, but when your taking pics from out in the middle of the race what can you expect.

If you like racing action then this magazine is the one for you... If you like reading "how to get legs of steel" for the one- hundreth time, then buy one of those other magazines..... keep up the great work Velo... you guys rock!!!!!

Similar Products Used: none....for the price no magazine compares unless you like reading the same articles over and over....

SGT. ROCK   Racer [Jun 07, 2004]
Strength:

Race coverage
Product reviews
Frequency of publication
Concentrates on riders, not products

Weakness:

Biased towards roadies
Expensive for non-U.S. subscribers

An interesting mag. As another reviewer said, how many "how-to" articles can you read before you hit the wall? VeloNess is cycling current events. Their product reviews are limited compared to the product oriented mags, but are generally logical and fair.

A little biased towards roadies, but that's where the money is these days.

I wish it were cheaper. I wish I had enough time to read it cover to cover!
If I could susbcribe to only one rag, this is def it! VN covers the entire spectrum of the cycling world and focuses on racing. Great writing, acceptable photos. Other mags may provide more dazzle or bike culture/fashion/trendiness, but VN gives the BIG PICTURE with detail.

If you are a racer or just a person who likes to hear about all the news (even rodie stuff) this is the mag to read. I have been an avid fan for two years and it is the BEST, it may be different but give it a try!

Bob VonMoss   Weekend Warrior [Sep 02, 2000]
Strength:

overview of national cycling, comic strip, semi-celebrity oriented, major tour coverage, competitive oriented, objective reviews

Weakness:

If you're not involved in the racing scene, it can be somewhat distant and irrelevant. Strange fetish with women's cycling and women racers. Only cover big money events. no BMX. no non-competitive cycling.

competitive cycling on a national level. Different than sport-oriented Bicycling.

Strength:

coverage. that's the key word. they get in there and get the info and get out and get it to you. they're also one of the only magazines that cover competitive mountain biking.

Weakness:

little choppy at times, and the local coverage can seem a little arbitrary. but that's the nature of national magazines.

pure journalism. you don't really find that in many corners of the mountain bike world. velo news is about the dissemination of cycling information and they do a fantastic job of it. they're the best magazine in the country for competitive road coverage and the best magazine in the world for competitive mountain coverage. and the only magazine for cyclocross coverage. they just don't stop.

Just kinda really really techie-racer-boringish. Fine if you are a racer, but definetly not the mag to get newbies inspired to ride. Better when Mountain BIke, casue it doesnt have Zap. Hmmm, not much else to say, that should we 50 words.

Nothing else comes close. Just pure, honest coverage of competitive cycling. If your are looking for info on a local race or want to know what is going on in the pros, this is the place to go. I am not even a roadie yet I love to read about what is going on in the pro peleton along with mountain biking.
