It's Cheap and Simple...

The long chain cage means it provides no real chain tension. When you ride on anything that's not a road, path or salt lake you just end up watching your chain bounce around like a bungee jumper.

if you are just an urban commuter that rides a entry level bike and doesn't want to spend much on a derailleur than this is for you. If you wish to do ANYTHING ELSE than go for something else. Shimano tend not to brake as easily as Sram but Sram shifts way way better and holds the chain nice and tight.

Strength:

Works well under light load; good for flat, shiftless terrain. besides, it's made by shimano, it's pretty good. cheap too.

Weakness:

entry level. It WILL NOT SHIFT if you are trying to spin on a steep climb. it simply stops working when climbing. why? i don't know. but it's fine for everything else. just make sure you shift much sooner than you need to.

It's cheap, don't expect to get what you DON'T pay for. If you aren't going to race, then buy one. If you are, then go with the XTR. the reason I am only giving it a 3 is cuz it just doesn't suit my needs.

Strength:

hmmmm, it shifts

Weakness:

jumpy, loud, poor tension, shifts slow

The alivio is good for flat smooth terrain. It shifts poorly on climbs or under any stress, when you actually need to shift. I almost did an endo on rough pavement when I down shifted cruising up-hill! The shifter slammed out of gear and sent me flying foward. The brothers on the corner got a good laugh but my boys were hurtin!! I've adjusted several times but it continues to malfuction after it wears in.
