Strength:

Ti strenth and durability compared to aluminum. 20t compatibiily with newer Shimano/SRAM with only minor modification to bolt heads.

Weakness:

expensive. For a small ring, steel is fine. Took some modification, but that is unavoidable with 20t.

I got the 20t heat treated ti inner ring. For newer Shimano and SRAM mtb cranksets the smallest ring in 22t. I was looking for lower gearing for my 29er. A big improvement in gearing for reasonable price (Ti). Install was fairly easy.

Also recommend looking at andersen machine 30t middle and 40t outer rings. They are aluminum, but much cheaper than Ti. Middle ring takes some gridning of the tip of the crank spider arm to clear the chain (again 32t is the smallest Shimano/SRAM ring).

It's outlasted three middles and two outers and is still going strong. One of my best purchases!

Well, it's a small chainring, so what's to say? It should last a long time, weighs little or nothing more than an alloy one, and bolts on easily. It cost about $20 back in 1997, which isn't much more than an alloy one. My only gripe is that it's a standard size 5-bolt ring, so if I upgrade, I'll need to go with 5-bolt XTR or other standard cranks to keep it. Not a big deal, really.
