Weekend Warrior

Strength:

Stiff, kinda light actually was quite reliable for about 2.5 years of weekend riding in the PNW.

Weakness:

Meh, none really just nothing special. Its creaking now after nearly 3 years but I was expecting that.

Came installed with the AfterBurner crankset on my '14 Moto Fly Ti 29er and I anticipated it being an issue much sooner than the 3 years it took so am happy. Replaced with Shimano Dura Ace for cheap. Thats just it, for just $35 I can instal a Dura Ace BB which is probably cheaper than a replacement FSA which have a weak rep so why would anyone bother?
Did my research and the Dura Ace actually gets really good reviews which is unheard of for a external BB and they are dirt cheap. Why would anyone bother with Chris King or Hope when such a great Shimano piece can be had for a fraction of the cost? THIS is exactly why I am loyal to Shimano, they rarely make a real crap product. May not be the blingiest, may not be the lightest BUT it will work as good as anything out there and will last.

Strength:

Nice colour

Weakness:

less than 2 month from new and the b/b has failed.

The bike came new fitted with this FSA b/b. Started griding after about a month but quietened down and thought no more about it. Noticed a small amount of play in the b/b last night which after 35 miles today has turned into near enough a total failure.

Similar shimano products have lasted three times as long.

Will be replacing it with a shimano setup and see-ing if I can get a replacement under the bikes warranty.

Strength:

Strong, no flexing.

Weakness:

Seals gave up after 8 months, started creaking, allowed mud and dirt into the bearings.

They are very strong and theres little or no flexing, but it just doesnt last. I took them apart and found that the non-drive side had seized up, gone rusty and was filled with lots of Welsh mud. Im going to upgrade to Enduro Ceramic bearings and replacement cups and see if they are better.

Strength:

Pretty color

Weakness:

Plastic shims and sheilds break after 2 months. Bearings seize from side thrust. ID oversized and spindle must be hammered into place.

Skip these and go straight to RACE FACE.

Strength:

Stiff, smooth and light.

Weakness:

The product doesn't last very long, had it about six months. Probably due to not re-installing with a torque wrench. Cartridge bearings are easily damaged with too much side loading (over tightening). The plastic bushes between the axle and bearing are very britle and break easily. Due to muddy condition in Britain and Les Gets in over summer bearing have worn out and need replacing.

Will try another one, but set up with park tool torque wrench. If that doesn't last maybe back to the old cartridge bottom bracket.

Shimano square taper cartridge bottom brackets UN 72. These in my experiecne last on average 3-4 years. They are definently not as ridgid as Mega exo sytem but last longer when used for commuting and XC.
