Dismal   All Mountain Rider [Mar 16, 2012]
Strength:

Strong frame, looks good!
Great spec for price.

Weakness:

The Nevegal 2.35 tyres were heavy and slow rolling.
The stem in my opinion was way too short for all mountain riding.

This is the 2010 Marin Rocky Ridge, and it is a great bike with a few wee changes.
I wiped out a couple of times on flat non challenging corners due to the laid back stance.
Slack, short stem, and high ride height led to a lot of pain.
I took out the spacers and stacked them on top of a longer stem (70mm), and reversed the stem i.e -5deg.
Problem solved, and still great down hill.
With new lighter faster rolling Bontrager XR4 2.2 (new style) it makes a perfect all mountain bike.
Weighs about 26lb now with some minor changes.
For £699, i think its a bargain! Buy it if you need a bargain All Mountain bike... you can still get them!
Lost a chilis cos it needed some thinking to make perfect.

Strength:

The frame is amazing; strong, flexible and perfect geometry. The derailleurs are spot on as long as you set them up right. The Hayes brakes worked well but i changed the pads in them so they wouldn't fade when they got hot on serious downhill runs.

Weakness:

The choice of brake pads - easily changed for £10

This bike will conquer anything. It is great for dirty downhills, light and comfortable for uphills. The geometry is perfect for everything including being amazing at dirt jumping and it has a ring guard for when things get tough. Ive used this for urban trials too and the only thing i would do it upgrade the front brake to a Hope or top level Avid. But unless your doing that, out of the box it is perfect.
(The 2008 model i think it the best because the geometry it far better for being an all round bike)

Strength:

Excellent build (X9 -Revelation dual air, firex cranks) and awesome fun on downhill and single tracks. Cant say enough about the rockshox revelation forks, they are so responsive and so rewarding when tuned correctly. The frame takes an absolute thrashing and is perfect for any xc rider who still does jumps and drops on the trail. the most forgiving hardtail Iv ever ridden.

Weakness:

Your friends with xc racers will always pass you on the fireroads and climbs. Its just the nature of the beast. My laserdisc rims buckled quickly (though im a clumsy rider)Heres a hint... Get your bikeshop to drop the suspension down to 110mm (not 150) with spacers, increase the stem to 90 or 100mm and you have almost perfectly matched the geometry of a small GT Zaskar, with a much more hardcore build!!!

I would definately recommend this to any recreational rider who thinks that jumps and drops are something they still want to do.
Similarly if you have an interest in trying 4X and Enduros like me but dont want to buy a second bike then just drop down the Revelations travel, and fiddle with the stem length and bar width to get the steering more responsive.
This really is the most FUN hardtail on the market. My only word of caution is that if you are chasing lap times or competively racing then look elsewhere.

Strength:

Strong frame, and great forks (fox vanilla)can take medium freeride and 4x, brilliant all round bike

Weakness:

After allot of use some parts in the drive train wear for example chain, shifters, front a rear cogs and derailleur and jockey wheels

Amazing bike for people who are just starting cross country, jumps/freeride gives the rider loads of confidence and will help him or her become a good all round rider. Overall bike is strong and the previous owner have used it for medium freeride for a long time and very little has gone wrong with it.

Strength:

Tough, nice looking bike with good shox.

Weakness:

No lockout on the forks (only thing I could come up with)

Awesome ride with nice wide bars for extra balance both up and down hill (I've climbed some steep stuff with this).
Scared myself big time on some steep downhills too but those fox vanilla's are always there to soak up those vicious bumps!
I've been over the Seven Sisters on this a few times and it always performs to expectation! Stick it on the credit card asap! It's only debt in exchange for an awesome machine!

Strength:

Buuuurrrrly frame. Very stiff. Lots of gusseting. Shore hartail/freeride goemetry without being too extreme. Fairly light considering the build. This bike is FAST on hardpack singletrack. Very responsive, neutral handling. Rolls over almost anything.

Weakness:

As one might expect, not the best climber you've ever seen. Your weight is back more over the rear wheel so the front wheel gets a little squirrely on steep climbs. You have to scoot forward quite a bit on the seat to keep your line. Marin did a good job keeping the weight down though, so it evens out. I'm not going to be racing so its not an issue for me. The reward on this bike comes when you descend technical singletrack.

I was looking for a bike that could be as fun as possible on singletrack, downhill, and be set up for some urban and light dirt jumping from time to time. I'm no racer, but I also wanted something that wasnt going to feel like pulling an anchor up a hill. Its a hard formula to achieve. Marin did a good job with their AXC frame. The geometry has everything you want from a modern freeride hardtail, but its not so far in that direction that the bike loses all its pedalling efficiency. For me, its a best of both worlds situation for the different types of riding I like to do.

Strength:

Strong frame, perfect geometry, good weight-strength ratio, versatile

Weakness:

Slightly hard on long climbs

Great HT. It is not the fastest thing on the trail, and I would not advice race heads to buy one, but it sure as heck is fun to ride, with its chunky construction and parts, its grippy tyres and its spot on geometry. When I say spot on, I am referring to its intended character, aggressive XC, and it is a hoot to motor around on steep, gnarly terrain in the woods. It handles like a Spitfire on twisty singletrack, and is easy to throw off drops and small jumps. The brakes are awesome, if a bit wooden, but Man, do they stop the bike! It is however a bit slow on softer ground, and on steep climbs, but unless you are bothering about laptimes, this is of minor concern( or indeed of no concern to me ). Personally, I couldn't have wished for a more sorted hard tail for the kind of riding I do.

Strength:

Frame strength,forks

Weakness:

Brakes!

great hard tail for aggressive gnarly trails, had a huge problem with the brakes which failed after 5 months but replaced them with hopes(fantastic brakes recommend them over any of the others out there), marin acknowledged the problem and gave me money back. the frame is uber string and just loves being thrown around and drops. super grippy on loose ground uphill, but slow on-road. great fun bike for the slightly leery!

Joe Fletcher   Weekend Warrior [Oct 16, 2006]
Strength:

The strength is i got it for only 400quid. Was sposed to be 500, but the guy took 100quid off proper price. The forks are good, it is comfortable to ride, the hydraulic brakes are excellent on occasions

Weakness:

well..... the gears keep skipping... the brakes dont always work... gears dont always change... and there is a really annoying noise while i pedal, like a squeky noise... scracthes really easily

for £400 i cant conmplain, but there are always little problems with it. But i cant really complain i did ride down the stairs at the East Hill, which is over 100 so... If you was to buy it for its intended purpose Extreme XC, buy it with the Fox Vanilla fork, and it wouldnt be so jaulty while riding over bumps.

Strength:

almost everything the look of this bike kicks a#s with the silver frame and black flames running down the top and bottom tubes ,hayes nine brakes, marzocchi dj3, hussefelt cranks, wtb dual duty rims and the new double ply dna weirwolf tires. Also has WTB Big seat and WTB matching sticky weirwolf grips with the same tread as the tires now talk about cool!!

Weakness:

Is Marin kidding with the pedals these are the worst stock pedals I have ever seen I don't even know what brand they are and the alivio shifters.

The bottom line for this bike is its value the parts spec is fantastic for the price brakes are excellent and the rims feel like they could take any amount of abuse. Marin has done it again with their tubing this bike is in a class of its own when it comes to weight it is at least 5 or more pounds lighter than the nearest dirt jumper on the market and it feels sturdy as hell when i went off two consecutive 8 footers the other day. i bought the small frame witch is 14" i am about 5'8 and weigh 170 lbs and have no problems with the size it is very easy to throw around and easy to corner if you like hardtail downhilling I have never bottomed out with the Dj's they are greatbut you might want to upgrade if you are serious about jumping. Frame looks bada#@ I have gotten so many complements on how it looks. So do yourself a favor go out and buy one NOW!!!
