White Lightning is cheap and good. Does get dirty contrary to description, but not as bad as others. Need to be reapplied alot more than T-9 or FinishLine. About $5 a bottle. Heard a lot of good about Pedro's though and am planning to try that on my cross/hybrid.

After my last post two years ago, I have been using Pro Link, which I have found to be far superior to all of the wax lubes because it doesn't build up a gummy deposit on the drive train. However, it still atract dirt and doesn't really seem very slippery. Would like to try Rock and Roll or Boeshield, but where can I find them? Pedro's is really the big loser-super gummy deposits!

Obviously you guys don't know about PROLAB-Technologies!!!
Try it once, then all these other products will go to the garbages. Try PL-100, PL-Bio or Bio-chain, I recommend PL-100 for top anti-friction performance, but if you want to be Envirionmental frendly, try the Bios. Anyone of these will out perform any other product on the market. Go to www.ParadiseMXRacing.ca/PROLAB.htm and see a demo of the performance, you can even buy online!
Way cheaper than other mentioned and it doesn't only last longer but, it enhance the performance.
Try it and you'll see/feel the difference.

A wax lube will pick up less dirt, but for singletrack riding under all conditions (including water, mud, dust), wax lubes simply cannot stand up to the drying effects of the dirt, and lubrication failure ensues. Boeshield T-9 (http://www.boeshield.com/) and Prolink Chain Lube (http://www.progoldmfr.com/products/prolink.html) were both evaluated in our fleet of 6 MTBs, with ca 3 rides per week per bike, in all conditions. Based on chain wear, Boeshield was more effective.
WINNER: Boeshield T-9
moter oil is great but a bit to thick for a chain and everything collects on it
my choice is ATF it's lighter soakes in better than moter oil and I soak my chain and all cabeles I replace on my bike in it
keeps my chain shinny and cabeles well lubed
just be shure to hang overnight or more so to remove exess oil from chain ect. and have a catch can underneath for the oil drippings
everything else is snake oil
just my opinion

The dry teflon lubes work fine as long as they don't get wet. but for off road, wet and mud, boeshield is the best by far. clean and apply and let dry. a second coat sometimes is needed. then run it through the mud...

Dries more like a plastic than a wax. Good for wet or dry. I used to be a tri-flow guy, it still works well but T-9 dries in two hours & has protected my bits better by not attracting crud. I've used white lightning but you can't just throw some more of that on whenever you feel like it. T-9 is the best of both worlds. My drivetrain stays nice & clean & smooth shifting even in mud & grit.
WINNER: Boeshield T-9
Haven't found anything that works as well as I would like. The wax type lubes build up on the chain and cause the links to become gummy, causing chain suck. The other types atract dirt, get messy, but the teflon seems to keep the chain flexible. Help.
WINNER: Other
As a professional mechanic, I hate wax. It make a huge mess, and does NOT work to my satsifaction. To get sufficient protection, you have to use an incredible abount, and that makes big deposits on the drivetrain, which most people do not clean properly, so they actually break derailuers, etc. Marvel Mystery oil is pretty much Type F ATF, in other words 20w with a high detergent content. Just because it protects airplanes from corrosion, does not mean it has the shear strength that a chain lube needs(Boeshield). For the best cleaning, stongest, most waterproof, (and best smelling!) lubes, use Bullshot. Once per 200-300 miles, or every 20-50 wet miles(that is plenty!), and your drivetrain will be happy. They make the best grease, too! Tri-flow is good for some parts, like rapid-fire shifters, and some pivots. I like Durex chain-bar-oil for freewheels, but a 90w synthetic works well, too. BTW, the second best way to get grease is Amsoil Synthetic; I think $2 or $3 for a 16oz tube.

the way i figure, you're gonna hafta replace your chain and cassettes once in a while, so my goal is to merely to keep my drivetrain at the optimum 95% efficiency mark. in that respect, i believe that if boeshield is good enough for a 747, its good enough for shimano lx and an IG-51 chain. conditions pending (financial status (heheh), weather, trail conditions) i used boeshield in the summer, wet or dry, and Stihl chainsaw lube in the winter, as it consistantly maintains a lower viscosity. don't get me wrong, DEGREASING with WD-40 is great because thats what it's designed to do, BUT ITS NOT A LUBE!!!
so when i run outta of boeshield, i always use chainsaw lube. its designed to resist grime and wood pulp, while cooling and lubing the chain. great for mtb bike chains, degrease w/wd40, relube with Stihl after about 3 dirty rides, and you've gotta good thing goin'. The performance differance is VERY marginal, i find chainsaw lube appropriate for both summer and winter, and i can buy a quart of chainsaw stuff for $2.
stihl: lower maintainer, great all round performance, VALUE, and it's a cool blood-red colour.
go try it!

I have to agree with the guy who recommends hot parrafin wax. Oils are not good for chains. Oils attract grit which is mixed with the oil which then acts as an absrasive on the chain. Wax on the other hand repels grit and water.
For each bike I have two chains with SRAM gold links. One is always clean and ready to go on the bike. The gold links pop off easily without tools and I haven't had any failures with them on the trails yet. When I want to change chain I put the bike on the workstand and take the old chain off the bike (takes 15 seconds and no tools) and drop it into a container of Simple Green to soak for a few days. No srubbing or brushing is ever necessary. I then put the clean chain on the bike. After a few days of soaking I get parrafin wax and melt it in double boiler in a coffee can. To the wax I add a couple of tablespoons of Slick 50 Engine Treatment with PTFE ans stir. I drop the chain into the melted wax/PTFE mixture and let it sit a couple of minutes and then take it out and hang it up to cool. You can knock some of the excess wax if you want. Now it is ready to put back on the bike in seconds when needed.
This sounds like a lot of steps but it is actually really quick, easy and not messy. Your chain never really gets dirty (in fact it always looks new) with this method and any dirt ends up in the simple Green anyway. Many people who ride two chains and maintain them like this have used the same chains for years.

For the past few years I'd break the chain every few rides, soak it in degreaser, gasoline, kerosean, etc... Then melt some parofine wax in an old pot and dip the chain. Let it hang to dry and put it back on the bike.
SOunds long and complicated? No scrubbing required on the chain just break it and soak it for a few hours. That's 1 minute. Then melt the wax and dip it. THat's another minutes. Put the chain back on the next morning before your ride and you're good to go. There's another minute. That's 3 minutes total for a perfectly cleaned and lubed chain. Soaking it will get all the gunk out of all the pivot points and dipping it in hot melted wax covers every nook and cranny including in between all the joints.
After 3 or 4 rides the wax is still on the chain and there is no crud whatsoever. The chain is practically sealed in a layer of wax. Paro wax is available in a big blocks at the grocery store for dirt cheap (it's the shit used for canning and stuff) As far as breaking the chain goes, I might try a SACH chain this year with the link. I may also try some of this high tech lube but I'm not expecting much. The good old parofine wax has kept the chain bone dry and clean. Not all dirty and shit like my friends bikes. Their chains make my hands all black. I can wipe my arse with my chain without a trace of skip mark.
Who cares what brand or how expensive your lube is. A clean and lubed chain is beter than a dirty chain that gets your hands all black. Clean it often and keep it lubed...replace it twice a year for minimal cog wear and your good to go. Stop whining and just ride. There are more important issues than brand of bike lube such as keeping your rims trued, having perfectly adjusted brakes, using a camelbak, wearing padded shorts and gloves.
I find breaking and soaking the chain very easy, fast, and hard to believe using a little brush and spray will work as good. Verdict: OTHER. I will use melted paro wax on the stove top until someone convinces me otherwise. And jsut for info I got the PARO wax tip out of 2 highly acclaimed MTB repair instructional books.

Lube is like a woman: you can't ride either without it.
I've been using wax types mostly because I hate greasy drivetrains. But if it has to be a mud ride on the summers worn drivetrain, waxes are useless. Only thing to do is snap off the powerlink, clean in solvent, dry, and soak in motor oil. Your mud ride will lastfor a couple of hours, then out with the Phil to get you home. I like Pedro's best. White lightning is for roadies, really, it only lasts 30 minutes. Lube seems like such a waste of money. I'm going to experiment with motorcycle lubes and take that lead from some riders below. Also I made a lube out of industrial floor wax in ammonia as a solvent. This works preetty damn good, but is very difficult to dispense. Boeshield and Tri Flow smeel nasty to me. Prolink I must try. Alas I am still searching. And yes furniture wax does work preetty damns good too, and smells nice. I hate lube but love to ride my bike and my woman. Lubeth thy drivetrain and rejoice.
WINNER: Pedros Ice Wax
I'll be totally honest. I have only used pedros and white lightning. At first when I read whitelightning's clam that it cleaned the chain I didn't believe it. But after trying it: apply liberaly/let sit for a couple min./, I saw all this crud seep out of the chain (I'm not lying to ya) Then you wipe it off and repeat as mainy time as you want. (I personally use this type)
The pedros does the same thing, the only difference I noticed was that whitelightning has a little less viscosity (it's thiner/runnier)
Overall, they both work well in dry conditions (the alcohol type substance evaporates, leaving the (dry)wax to "lube" your chain. The only advice I would give: be sure to degrease your chain about every six months due to the fact that the wax left behind can and will build up. This build up needs to be removed.
If you have any questions on any thing bike related, feel free to e-mail me.

I used Tri Flow to years. Contrary to popular beliefe; it worked very well in dry Calif. weather. (I don't ride in the wet if there's any way I can avoid it. Despise mud & wet.) Got tired of cleaning chain so much. Tried T-9. It works very well. Lasts about 70 miles, sometimes less. I wish it lasted 40 miles more, but I never clean my chain. Just pour it on each side of chain. spin the cranks for 5 minutes while shifing through all 27 gears. Take a shop rag & wipe it off for 5 minutes.

Boeshield rocks! Nothing even comes close to this stuff. No matter what conditions you ride boeshield doesn't disappoint. Boeshield does not flake off like a lot of the other wax based lubes out there. Boeshield does not collect dust and it repels water very well. Besides, The stuff is made by boeing. If this stuff works on 747's it will surely meet the demands of my bike.

Folks, does this question really merit a discussion?
I think not. This whole forum is driven by advertizing execs who sell the same product under ten different names!
Don't beleive me? Look at the labels. Many of the ingredients are the same, have similar mollecular structure, or are derivatives of the same common source: CRUDE OIL!
That's right kiddies! Crude oil is the base of 99% of these lubricants. Why would you even bother with them? I have a friend, who has a friend of a friend, who is dating this guy's second cousing, twice removed, who is a friend of a guy that works in a gasoline refinery. From him I bought a barrel of Barrents Sea Light Sweet crude for $25 a BARREL! If I need lube, I just dip the offending part right into the barrel, swirl it around, and I am done! Degreaser? Who needs it? All the gunk settles to the bottom of the barrel! I bought this barrel back in 1995, and I have yet to scrape the bottom!
The bottom line is that my chain is beautifuly black all the time! It also smells wonderful!
So why anyone would spend $6 or $7 US dollars for 6 US ounces of refined crude oil is beyond me!
Now where is that Crazy Bitch from Upstate Nu Yawk? Sounds like my kind of woman!!!

I like the Finish Line Krytech. It might not clean as well as White Lightning, but you should be scrubbing your chain down anyway. The Finish Line keeps you lubed longer, as well as clean, if you dont have time to lube up again.

Rock and Roll or Star bike lube. Makes all others go home. Rock and roll cleans your chain as it goes on. Star is from a ski wax company and you can get up to 400 miles with out having to reaply or clean your chain

I have used Finish Line Kryteck and I can tell you that it sucks. I did not stay on my cain at all. You almost have to cary the bottle with you so you can put some on every 20 minutes. The bike shop that I usally go to has given up on it becous they had poeple complaning about how it was not warking. The owner of the shop told me that it was not working for him at all. I have started to use Pedro's Ice Wax and I have not had nerly as meny probloms. Which does not say much. Considering how the other has even coust me a race when my chain started to stike to my gears that wore in good shape. I have not tride iney of the otheers. WD40 works and is cheap :)
Otherwise Prolink works well if you want to spend the money
WINNER: Other
What's up with people talking about WD-40? It's a solvent for chrissakes!!! Choice of lube depends on conditions: dry = wax, wet = non wax. Nevertheless, I like wax even in wet because of its ability to shed the grit right out of the chain. So what if I have to reapply every ride? I find white lightning sticks around longer and sheds better than the other waxes, though I haven't tried boeshield...
WINNER: White Lightning
I didn't know that you could use chain lube for so many obscene tasks. Rocky Mountain riding requires dry lubes. Dust will kill you with a wet lube. And yet, nothing lubes better than a wet lube, which is why "race day" lubes are, you guessed it, wet. I hate it when White Lightning and Pedro's users bring their bikes into my shop-wax lubes cake on so fast and most people don't clean their drivetrains. Lovely. Finish Line Dry-red cap. Use it. Love it.

If you haven't tried Break Free CLP by San/Bar you should. All that other high priced junk is just so much crap by comparison. Break Free has Mil Specs and is used by Military and Police forces around the world. It's been number one in the U.S. Military since 1979 or so. Sure, it's used on Machine Guns, M-16s and such, but it's also great on the chain and mechanism of a mountain bike. I use nothing else on mine.
It will make your bike mechanism run smooth as snot on a doorknob! Hey, don't take my word for it. Try it.

All that stuff is too expensive!! I use Gunk Spray from any hardware store. It's about $2 for 12oz. Gunk spray comes in teflon and silicon. I use the silicon because it's waterproof and dirt resistant and it's not like a wax so you have less friction and no mess everywhere. I couldn't believe it when I sprayed that stuff on my chain...WOW!!!! The only thing I could hear when pedalling were the tires gripping the ground. Sometimes I have to look back to make sure that I shifted because I can't hear it if I'm offroad or there's wind blowing.

When considering the ratio of cost versus efficiancy, WD-40 seems to be the only logical choice. Lubricant is applied and then it is ultimately removed by either nature or the degreasers these companies provide to mountain bikers at a drastically inflated cost. WD-40 is both the superior economical and performing choice.

I have used White Lightning for 5 yrs. and have over 6000 miles on my two bikes and have never once had a problem in mud, sand, water, or snow. My chain stays clean and never binds and I have never had a problem with build-up. I can get about 30 to 40 miles of riding in really crappy conditions between applications. I use it on my derailleur pivot points, even though they say that's not a good idea, but I've never had a problem with sticking shifter mechanisms. I've tried other products and always went back to the White Lightning. The stuff is great!

Schwinn Chain Wax. White lightning really su#%$.
You people quoting properties of lubes are really making some marketing people happy.
Try ALL of them. Ignore the packaging (except maybe the application instructions). See which works best for your application.
I happen to like the Campagnolo chain lube for road bikes. It's really really (I mean REALLY!) messy, chain is black in one ride, but it is almost like running your cars' timing chain IN oil rather than spraying it on and wiping it off.
Boeshield T-9 works OK, but when I worked as an Aviation Maintenance inspector, nobody had even heard of it. Most lubes we used were some type of mil-spec.
WINNER: Other
That's the problem with the environment: Too many waxes/oils/lubricants that require special cleaners to remove them, only so you can reapply them.
Well boyo, I have the PERFECT SOLUTION!!! Hear me!! PERFECT!!
KY Jelly!! By cracky, if it's good enough for my old lady, it's good enough for my bike. So you say: "But it's water soluble, it will wash off!" But that's the beauty of it! Soap and water will get it off. If you ride in the rain, you are a moron, so why would you worry about chain lube?! So you say: "But what if I ride through water?" If you ride through water deep enough to get your chain wet, you are the same moron who rides in the rain!
But in case I ride and feel the need to reaply lube, I carry the large economical size bottle of KY with me! It also come in handy when I ride with a lady, and there is just not enough time for foreplay...if you get my drift...wink...wink!
So I vote for other!

Schwinn Lube -- works better than White Lightning and just as well as Pedros Ice Wax....for alot less $$$. 90% of my rides are in dry conditions (I love SoCal!!!) so a wet lube is not my choice (toooo dirty). The wax lubes work very well and keep the drive train pretty clean. The only problems I've found with wax lubes are: 1) short life span (50 miles max); 2) virtually impossible to use at temps below 50; 3) can be difficult to clean from drivetrain.

My favorite for dusty courses is pedro's ice wax. The key is to apply to clean chain, wipe and let dry. "Layering" by repeating the process with the exception of wiping between applications seems to promote optimal lubrication for 30 or so dusty miles.

Waxes suck! they totally gunk up your cassette, and collect all the dirt out on the trail like a magnet. If you want something that's gonna help clean your cassette/sprocket while lubing your chain, get Tri-flow (with teflon). It liquidizes the dirt so it runs off your chain, while lubricating the chain at the same time.

None of the above. They're all either a drag to apply, and the wax never lasts, though it is clean, but so is my chain after I run it under the tap. The wet stuff attracts dirt and wrecks your ride. So, try Finish Line Teflon Plus, but clean your chain before application and wipe off all the residual lube thoroughly after 1/2 an hour. In a pinch follow Castrol guy's suggestion, which works, or try 3 in 1 oil for wet and snowy conditions, truck oil also works, like 40 w whatever.

Castrol motorbike chain lube.
It's cheap. It's long lasting. It's waterproof. It's bubbling. It feels cold (that's the volatile solvent evaporating). It penetrates.

Castrol motorbike chain lube: you spray it on, it bubbles and pushes the dirt out, the heavier duty oil with volatile solvent gets into the parts and keeps them running. It's also cheap.

Pedro's does it for me in my riding conditions (dry, dusty to hardpack). Tried White Lightning, but it still squeaks and needs to be cleaned regularly or else it forms a dirty deposit, I kid you not. Castrol 20W50 out of an eye dropper or a TriFlow bottle. $1.50 a quart, the cheapest you can get. It lasts about 150 miles between applications. But, you must wipe the excess off the chain, inside and out and off the chain rings or else you will have a gritty mess. Use an SRAM chain with the removable link so you can easily take your chain off and clean it in a parts cleaner. Clean off the solvent with carb cleaner, let it dry and oil it.

Never tried crack wax. A two month old (2/3 full) bottle of W.L. began to gell inside the bottle and would not dispense any more lube for me. WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY. The T-9 takes too long to set up and the bottle leaks so I quit using it. F.L. works good but gets too dirty on a dry trail. So I'm down to Pedros. It isn't perfect, but it holds up well on all day, dusty rides. Can't forget to use it for each ride though. I like to go over my bike after each ride so applying lube on a regular basis isn't a problem to me. There must be something out there that works well and doesn't cost ten dollars per ounce.

THIS STUFF DOES ALL THE INFOMERICAL HYPE THAT GOES ALONG WITH IT HANDS DOWN THE BEST LUBE FOR ANY BIKE CHAIN.

White Lightening. While it doesn't last long (about 1-2 rides depending on conditions) I is the only "dry" lube that I've tried that is really dry and does not attract dirt. It is important however to follow the directions about removing every trace of old lube and degreaser and I find it works better if put on, wiped of and then reapplied and left on thick (who cares if theres a lot of it as it doesn't attract dirt). The only weakness I can think of is that it does gunk up the cassete with wax that is not easy to remove. What I really love about it is being able to look down at my chain during a ride and see it shinning.

Long distance on trails.
This stuff works.
Long time between applications.
Good in wet, good in dirt, just plain good.
Get it.

The White Lightning works great for me. I started using the cheap Schwinn chain lube, but it gummed up my cassette and rear derailluer bad. Then I tried the Dry Lube and other than then the fact that you have to put it on before every ride, it has kept the gears clean.

Just do like i do and use some 90 wt .

Lube is overrated. When your chain overheats, apply urine from a natural hose. Carry extra chains and chain tool in case urine method fails. Caution: Immediate consumption of power bars after chain removal may cause illness.

I must say that Boeshield is the best chain lube on the market. I haven't been able to find it in anything but aerosol however and i don't like that cause then it's just messy. I take a small bottle that i use to put ink in my printer cartridges and it has a small needle like tip on it, it works great, just spray the boeshield into that little bottle, let the aerosol propellent evaporate out, and lube away. You must do this at least 24 hours before you ride though, since it takes an awful long time to dry. If i'm in a pinch and don't have 24 hours, i use ice wax. I found that you really shouldn't mix lubes though, they sometimes can work against eachother.

well if you can buy your groceries at the same place u buy ur lube and you think that the lube is good......well.....you'll find out soon enough.

KY jelly works the best in all conditions, unless you have access to a real girlfriend. It will not break down any rubber/silicon products. It is fully intert and will not break down or corode any substance. It has also been known to increase the modulus of elasticity(stiffness) of steel and other alloys, and the best part: no waiting for it to dry, just apply with vigorous strokes and you're all set.

Rode them all
krytech & White Lightening are similar, but Krytech is messier
Both suck in wet conditions, and don't last long in dry conditions either
Lumpys just plain out suckx
Ice Wax is good
But T-9 is the best. Doesn't wash off, last forever, works in ALL conditions. The only bad thing is it is expensive!
T-9 all the way!

I've used almost all of them and Ice Wax is the best for dry and thick, muddy conditions. When the mud gets soupy you need something thicker like Pedro's ATB SYN Lube.

Boeshield! Most people that I know use It don't ley it dry overnight. Degrease your drivetrain, dry thoroughly, lubricate somewhat liberally, let it dry overnight. Wipe off excess film. You're now good for at least 100 miles, even in mud. White Lighting wears too fast. White Lightning is second, if you plan on washing and degreasing frequently. But for the long haul, Boeshield is it man!

I work at a bike shop and have tried lots of lubes. The krytech is alright but white lighting is the best by far.

Chicken fat works the best. Heat it up a bit to get it runny and then dip the chain in and let it sit for a while. Then wipe it down and you are set. Use a rag though not paper towels 'cause they will just stick to the chicken fat. You can use bacon grease in a pinch, but stay away from the salt-cured stuff. If you want to be fancy, try some rendered rabbit fat. It picks up less dirt. To clean, get the best moonshine you can afford, or make your own. You will leave all those sissy city boys in the dust.

Well, ummm, depends.... for dry riding this is my shtick; after ride, clean bike, clean chain, apply standard WL, spinspinspin, wipe and go drink beer - before next ride, apply coat of WL RaceDay, spin and wipe and ride. Found it to be good for up to 50 or so miles of dryness before clackety sounds appear and performance goes buhbye. On road bike this lasts me about 200+.
Now, when things get wet, I switch to Finish Line red sauce, or Daemon Semen. I tried motorcycle chain lube once but the shear was too much. I felt like I was dragging a rock!
For other parts of the bike, I use a combo of WL, Finish Line and FL teflon spray. And Phils Tenacious grease, and WTB GreaseGuard grease. And Spam on the downtube when it gets really gloppy and sloppy. And Johnnysnot for my Gripshift shifters. And KY jelly too!!! Isn't lubrication lovely?!?!

To rate all of these lubricants in one forum is absurd. There are places to lubricate on a mountain bike, and they don't all require the same stuff. I have done a variety of tests on substances most often used as chain lubes, and some should never be used on chains, yet they are great otner ares. For Chains: unless you take the chain off of the bike, you can never get it clean with those silily crank through boxes and degreaser...where does the degreaser go when you put your lube on over it? Is iit totally clean? Get a master link (such as the Missing Link) and take the damn thing off and soak/swish it around in degreaser then solvent...such as lacquer thinner or carb cleaner...something that will evaporate quickly...better still, blow it dry with air. You don't get it clean with a repeated bath in degreaser, some of which stays put with some of the grit and dirt. With the chain aoff, and clean, you can dip in R.J.Hock's Chain Wax, or a variety of other hot-dip wax chain lubes. Everything else is second rate. Hock's Chain wax is loaded with Teflon's cousin, PTFE, which helps it repel water and dirt, while making shifting effortless. Once waxed properly, chains and the lubrication last a lot longer. My tests have shown that Schwinn's Cirtrus Aerosol Chain Wax is the next best product as a pure chain lubricant. It is the quickest of the aerosols to dry and sets up almost as thick as dip wax. It is very tenacious and really waterproof. I used it on the winch I used, underwater, to hoist my plum trees back into the ground after Hurricane Andrew. The winch is still in the back yard, and still rust free...everywyhere!
Third choice chain lube-Ice Wax. It drips on, making it harder to penetrate, but it does set up with thick deposits to occlude dirt. It doesn't penetrate as well as Schwinn's aerosol chain wax, or hot-dip-wax and it doesn't dry quite as quickly, but it's the next best on the list.
Deraileures: The best way to lube a deraileur is, like the chain, to clean it first. Short of miracle widgets, the best way to clean a deraileur is to remove the rear wheel, and of course, you'll have the chain off for cleaning/switching with spare chain, anyway. Carb cleaner works great, here. Berkebile 2+2 is the one carb cleaner that evaporates with no oily petrolium residue, making it easier to lubricate. A few blasts with the air gun will get every last bit of solvent and dirt out of the deraileur's guts. Schwinn's Citrus, Aerosol Chain wax is perfect here, as it penetrates, dries quickly and leaves a heavy deposit of lubricating media held in place by tenacious wax. If you don't have carb cleaner or an air gun, in the aerosol form, Schwinn's chain wax will still cut through any old lube, grease and dirt, and foam it away.
Though it does not set up as heavy a deposit as the Schwinn Wax, Boeshield-T9 still has a great penetrating ability and is very tenacious. It takes longer to dry, but it is a super protectant, against rust. Its tenacity and penetrating properties make it an excellent deraileur cleaner and lubricant.
Cable lubes: For all the reasons that make the Schwinn and Boeshield lubes superior for deraileurs, they are also good cable lubes. Being wax based, they wil not interfere with teflon and other lined cables. Being wax based, they are also occlusive seals, keeping the cable from dragging contaminants into the liner. Your cable housings may not rust, but without something on them, cables will eventually rust. A good penetrating wax based lubricant will protect, seal and lubricate. if you are going to ride a mountain bike, you need more than just a can of fairy-dust

Man, let me tell you that the best lubricant I have found is some stuff called "769". This stuff penetrates like you wouldn't believe. And it keeps my stuff totally rust free. Its by some company called Jet-Lube.

OK... First I used the Finish. L. but it came off too fast. Then I went to White Lightning b/c I liked the detergent idea. Then I tried Dupont Teflon drivetrain lube. Let me tell you, I like it!!!!! So much I bought 40 more. (It comes in a little plastic syringe) This stuff not only lubes, but adds a teflon coating to your parts for extra protection and it lasts a long time. (Now I occasionally use other lubes on top of it, but not white lightning b/c of the detergent.)You can also use it on most other moving parts.

You know what is better than all of these fancy products combined- three in one oil. It flows in so nicely, feels so smooth, attracts lillte muck, and just plain out-performs any other lube out there. And at like 1/5 the cost of all these gimmicky brands, It almost too good to be true.
