no shimano? WTF?

Saints are easily the best performing brake out there (apart from Avid Juicys which are fantastic, but I'd rather have Saints). Modulation and power is unbelivable, piss easy to fit and maintain.

Hopes are lame. Way harder to set up, poor modulation, poor power really. Expensive too.

Gustavs are just too much, especially here in the UK.

Pro Stop? Rock Shox? Coda? Yeah great.

Shimano for the win. Easily.

Also, this 'lets hate Shitano cool-kid' image is a bunch of toss. Get real, they are some of the best performing components out there.

Avid Mechanicals are the best freakin' disc brakes in the world !!! I know because I own them and you don't . If you do own them then you know that they are inexpensive , easy to maintain , and they stop on a dime . Why spend craploads of money for other brands when you can buy Avids and get the best performance for the least amount of money ? All the other brands are for rich pantywaists with too much money and way too much time on their hands . They should all get real jobs and find out how hard it is to make a living nowadays . Rich know-it-all snobs with their $3,000 mountain bikes !!! They suck .

The four piston XT hydraulics have incredible stopping power, plus very good modulation. But you are always fussing with the alignment of hydraulic brakes, plus if you crash and wreck a lever/master cylinder, the cost is ridiculous. I find Avid mechanicals to have plenty of stopping power, are easy to set up, don't drag, levers are cheap, the whole system costs half of hydraulic, and are long wearing. A NO BRAINER

We have a fleet of 6 bikes with Avid Mechanical Disc brakes, and many of my riding buddys have chosen this brake as well. At about $140 per set and weighing in about 600 gm, compared to the ones listed these are cheaper and a bit heavier. The nice feature is the Caliper Positioning System, which simplifies installation. You might find the mechanical to be simpler and more robust than the hydraulic, albeit a hydraulic line is easier to route than a cable.

Michael Gardner a racer from Gainesville, FL writes:

I see the disc world as having two differing selections, mech and hydro. I really don't have a preference on either type, but I do for the manufacturers of them. For mech discs I would have to say hands down avid. They are easy to maintain and personally I think they provide great feel and power. I've been largely unimpressed with offerings by Shimano and Hayes for mech discs. They feel cheap and I don't appreciate plastic! Hydro discs are bit harder for me to decide on a complete winner. On a cross country rig I gotta love the hayes. They feel the best in terms of modulation and power. They're also really easy to bleed and setup. However, when I hit some serious DHing I gotta take the Avid Juicy 7s. They seem to have the most control, just maybe on the heavy side.

None of the above. As much as I'm not a fan of Shimano, i've got to give them props for the old xt four pot brake -- which I think was made by grimeca. Awesome brake.
- Hopes: work well enough, cool cnc workmanship, a little pricey.
- Maguras: way too fiddly if you ever have to work on them.
- Hayes: brake fluid (why?), funky non-standard mount (why?), otherwise nice enough brakes. They actually bleed easily enough, ya just gotta be careful not to get brake fluid on the bike's finish as it'll eat it off.

Avid mechanicals are the winner! Iv'e ridden mine for 2 seasons now & couldn't be happier with them. They are inexpensive, super easy to set up, can easily be adjusted on the trail with no tools and cables have never let me down! I read all these posts in the brake forum about all the troubles with expensive hydaulic brakes & wonder how could you not want the simplicity & affordability of the avids? I have never had to walk out of a ride because of a brake failure. IMO the trade off of reliabilty/for the hydro lever feel just isn't worth it! I love these brakes!

Well, I guess now we can say RockShox or Avid and have it actually mean SRAM since RockShox and Avid are both under the SRAM wing now.

I choose other - as in Avid Mechanical Disc brakes. I own three pair, 1 pair is the 160mm variety and the other 2 pairs are the 185mm variety. Flawless performance from all three sets. It's no wonder this product has captured so much market share and has such a loyal following. For the price/performance ratio - Avid wins hands down.

AVID mech 203mm's are my pick, you cant beat them for their price:value ratio. theyre about half the price of hydro's and with an inexpensive upgrade to the pads (gold level bronze sintered, more power than youll ever need)and the matching avid speed dial's (ultimates really makes this system perfect)
hydros are less adjustable, harder to tune, and more succeptable to damage in wrecks, i stick to cables for anything i could drop on the rocks. i only use hydros in urban environments for their lock up properties.
avid mechs are the best

I find it laughable to read that if someone thinks the pros ride the product, the it has to be good. Bullshit! Your talking about professionals who can outride all of us stuck on a mountainbike circa 1989.

As an amateur, do YOU have a professional mechanic to fix all the good and bad on your bike each day? No. Duh. If the item breaks, will you get a brand new one as a replacement part, and will you continue to get a brand new one each time it breaks? No. Duh. As long as the bike isn't SLOWED DOWN by the product AND there's BIG money involved, I would questions the logic to cite a pro and all the goodies they have one their bikes. Quite frankly, if you were paid for example to ride a season with Formula brakes on your bike for 50K each year, I KNOW you'd have it on your bike each race. And after each race you'll talk up the crappy product because you don't know any better. Because after all, you mechanic fixes the shit to last just long-enough for the race. Please...

My Avid ball bearing mechs work better than my 6" Hays Hydros. I use the 8" Avids on my freeride 67 and it shaves off the speed fast and constant on them down hill runs. I don't know how the Hays 8" work but these mechs are way cheaper and plenty powerful enough for anything I go up against. I weigh 220lb so these brakes are stopping some momentum. I wouldn't have believed mechs to be as good as any size Hydros until I tried them. The only reason I did is because of cost. I was going to sacrifice some power(compared to hydros) just to have disc brakes. Truth is these Avids are just as good.

Caveat: I have not owned a pair of Disk brakes. I am currently running Avid Arch rival 50. I wish I had somewhat smoother levers and a bit more modulation especially on technical downhills which I ride on my 99 King Kicksomepoo by the Kona slant eyes.

Most of the Disk brakes I have seen and almost always listen to on the trail seem to generally squeak and grind! I would suffer from slightly reduced brake performance to allow me to hear the trees rustle and the rocks tumble as I ride by.

So for not I will stick with a High Quality V-style brakee.

Hey a lot of these guys claim to be experts. I'm betting a lot of them are not. I'm not an expert but Im an avid rider, and I have tried 2 out of the 7 brakes listed here. The two brakes that I have owned and used consistently are the Mountain Cycle Pro Stops, and the Hayes 6'DH brakes. First off the Pro Stop's are one of the meanest looking brakes out there. 8 inch rotor, beefy tubing, they just look burley. The gold finish on the lever looks a little lame, but the system is well made. That being said, the performance of the PS is all right. I'm also not crazy that the system is closed system that needs to be bleed on a regular basis. I used to think the PS was great, until I tried the Hayes. The Hayes rotor looks puny in comparison to that of the Pro Stop. Yet the performance of the Hayes brake is consistently good, the lever has good feel, and overall the system is just better. Once you get the Hayes dialed in they make no noise, unlike the PS. Also when you are hitting the brakes hard the Hayes just bite and hold much better. I'm sold on the Hayes, and I can know see why they are the standard everyones measures there stuff against. Go out and get yourself a set of Hayes..You will not be disappointed..

Nothing sucks worse than losing your V-brakes when you waste a rim. The disc lets you keep your brakes (try a 1500ft decent with a dented front rim and V's just once) Discs are the wave of the future just like when V's replaced cantilever brakes. Disc Brakes are like CD's, V-brakes are like cassette tapes and cantilevers are like 8 track. WTF? Shimano XT are not even a choice, and Rock Shox Disc is? Seriously, when was the last time you saw someone riding with Rock Shox hydraulic brakes?

I have used Hayes 6" and 8" and they lock up nicely, but they squeal like a cheerleader in heat when wet or dry! My XT hydraulic brakes have only squeaked on 1 occasion for a few minutes...when I switched to new disc rotors on a new 2nd set of wheels. Now that they are worn in, both sets of wheels work fine without any noise. When it comes to power, my XT brakes work about the same as Hayes but use mineral oil which is much safer to handle than DOT3 that Hayes use. The only thing that sux is that the oil pods of the XT brake levers stick out and might get phukt up in a crash, and the Hayes levers totally hide the oil pods. I haven't crashed hard enough to damage the pods yet, but I know they will crack open before a Hayes setup would.

Well its a personel preference afterall. I have not much experience in disc brakes and my first time contacting with disc brakes were those on my friend's nicolia bike. He uses a STARBIKE disc brakes and all i have to do is to use one finger, press very very lighlty on the levers and that can send me flying out of the bike! GReat stopping power man! I have also tried the Shimano Xt on my friend's bike and they too can stop with one light press from the finger. Both of these disc brakes has levers that are so easy to press. Then i bought a cannondale team volvo downhill bike with CODA's I rode them for two moths on only flat land to run them in . Well the brake levers are soooooooooo hard to press ! They felt like some force is acting against your fingers when you press the levers and they don't brake well at all! The front brakes are so poor that i cannnot even lock up or brake instantly when i am travelling at walking pace on my bike! I used all my might to press the levers and the bike feels like its stopping but still goes on and on. MAybe my disc brakes oil is too think or i need bleeding but i still think that CODA sux from my expeirience and reviews given by other people all over the web.Well HOPE and HAYES almost tie but i do not know which has the best stopping power.Maybe magura rocks too! I still gotta do lots of research before getting a new pair of discs! But right now i think that the Hope disc brakes and hayes and Magura tie.Well, since the winner cannot be chosen, i think that the hopes look the cutest and so the winner goes to HOPE!!!!!!!! I just recently decided to equip the front on my hardtail XC rig with a Formula B4 disc brake system. I kept my Magura HS33 rear brake because my frame is not "disc brake ready" and I'm sceptic about using silly adapters.
I chose this system for it's Light weight (only 335 grams), the price I had to pay (187 euro), it's cool looks and it very well matches my Z2 Atom Race.
So far, no complaints: great stopping power. At this very moment I can't judge it's durability, nor can I compare with other disc brake systems (one test ride on a Magura Clara equiped bike).
The Formula B4 is designed as a XC disc brake system and that probably is what it does best. I can imagine that the B4 lacks stopping power for extreme downhill. So what, I'm not into that stuff.
Any of the disc brake in this "One on One" forum will have their pros and cons.
Definite winner are the hydraulic disc&rim brake systems above the mechanical (wire) systems.

Please comment on the "Quad QMD-3" mechanical Front & Rear CAm Disc Brake System. They copided Hayes to a "T" and are less than 1/2 the price. They are mfg'd. by Quad Cor[poration LTD., Surrey, England.I haven't found any better and the price is right.

i am a competitive DS and XC rider and i can say that working at a shop i have ridden them all and hands down the hayes takes it!! it by far not only has the best feel, but also from a mantinence standpoint, and belive me i have overhauled almost every system there, hayes is by far the easyest to get along with. all of the other systems work, but hayes is one of the only that truely work well

Okay, let's take it by the numbers:

Coda:They REALLY suck.Non-standard hubs,no stopping power at all.Feel worse then old Acera cantis!Screw you,Cannondale.

Formula Hydro:Total bitch to adjust+install, but they work pretty good if everything is perfect(dry conditions, wussy XC).Otherwise, there are better discs out there.

Hayes Hydro:KICKASS stopping power, but hard to adjust and little modulation.Shimming the pads is a pain in the ass.Expensive too.Still a good system though, especially if DH/Freeride is your style.

Hayes Mech:Great for a cable brake-probably one of the best out there, and FAR cheaper than the hydro.

Hope Hydro:AWESOME--probably best out of this bunch.Less power than the Hayes, but great modulation and SWEEEET adjustment! They put a lot of work and design into these puppies, and it shows.Get the Open systems,though--the Closed ones tend to overheat.

Magura Hydro:Can't comment on the Gustav.Heard that they are good. But I have tested the Julies--pretty good, and SHIT CHEAP for hydraulic.

Prostop:No comment,haven't tested them.

Rock Shox/Amp:ANYTHING with the AMP name on them is SHIT,period. No wonder they went out of business.Non-standard hubs, shitty power+modulation.

Shimano/Grimeca Hydro:Pass on the Deore cable disc--not enough power.Don't piss around--get either the Grimeca System 8 or XT Disc(they are both the same, only minor differences). Both comparable to Hopes and Hayes on power+modulation, but cheaper than either.Pretty damn good considering Shimano's new to this market.

Avid Mech:EVERY bit as good as the Hayes mech.,but a little cheaper and is less complex.

I recommend the Shimano/Grimecas,Hope(Open),and Hayes.The new mechanicals(Avid,Hayes)are pretty good,and if you don't DH,they should be considered.AVOID FORMULA AND CODA!!!They eat shit!
