Favorite Trail:Council Bluff Lake Trail
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Purchased At:LBS
Strengths:Strong, Reliable, Good Looks, Nice braking surface, Build up nicely.
Weaknesses:none so far
Similar Products Used:Mavic, Sun Rylo lite
Bike Setup:Cannondale CAAD 3 frame, SRAM9.0 Rear Der, XT front. Icon cranks, Machine tech brakes, Answer carbon bar, Nuke Proof superfly hubs, DT double butted spokes.
Bottom Line:I first built these wheels over 6 years ago and they have been in use since. I guess the rims are a bit on the heavy side for serious racers but they are almost bomb proof.
The only failure was when my rear hub flange broke causing the rim to almost taco and the bonded seam seperated. When I called Velocity to order a new rim, Velocity took care of the rim even though it clearly was not a quality issue.
This rim is great for the XC guy looking for a good set of wheels to train with or the adventure rider wanting a reliable light(ish) wheelset.

Date Reviewed: October 16, 2003
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $62.00
Purchased At:Narooma Cycles
Strengths:Strong Rim, Great colour
Weaknesses:None found yet
Similar Products Used:Mavic 225
Bike Setup:Iron Horse Hard Tail - upgraded with xt & LX parts Manitou Black elite shocks.
Bottom Line:Set these rims up on brand new XT hubs, and swiss DT spokes. Since putting them on my bike I would have to say I have given them a pretty good flogging, a few accidents, lots of hard hits on drop offs, logs, etc etc, and they have stayed true. Only drama I had was a stick through the spokes, ripped the nipples from the rim, but the eyelets stayed in place. Good solid XC rim, probably not suited for serious racers, but for those boffins like me wanting to give the odd race a go, they are a reliable rim that have performed admirably for me.

Date Reviewed: April 24, 2001
Duration Product Used:6 months
Purchased At:Action cycles
Strengths:Good value & good looks
Weaknesses:None so far
Similar Products Used:Mavic, Araya, WTB
Bike Setup:Avanti comp
Bottom Line:Just a good honest rim. Probably too heavy to race, but then the trade off is a solid rim that has not gone out of shape even with some fairly decent hits. Best classified as a solid X country rim rather than being assigned downhill duties. If somebody buys this specifically for downhill then they have either been ill advised, or are just stupid.

Date Reviewed: October 30, 1999
Favorite Trail:
most of 'em
Duration Product Used:
less than 1 month
Strengths:
look(ed) alright
eyeletted
machined sidewalls
cheap
promising...
Weaknesses:
unfulfilling
inbetweeny rim (not xc, not dh) at ~500gm
folds like sheet metal
Similar Products Used:
speedmasters (uuughhhh)
d521
Bike Setup:
DBR v-link 3.2, WB DC118, 99 LX kit, Maxxis Instinct/Helter
Bottom Line:This rim was supposed to make a good wheel, laced with an old stxrc hub and new Dt14/15ga spokes it came up pretty straight and round to begin with, but on its second voyage out of the truing stand the outside of the sidewall lip that the tyre bead hooks behind folded over (towards the inside) in two places, on opposite sides of the rim. And this is just mucking around, didn't crash, no jumps or anything remotely taxing. WTF is with that?!! less than 10km on them, properly trued, tensioned and they died ASAP. I've only heard bad things about velocities crud, so for me this is it, no more. I'm ashamed to live in the same city that produces these faecal hoops of pain. Lesse what Mr Warranty will say about it...
