Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $560.00
Purchased At:Bikes Plus
Strengths:Reliable and can take abuse from 200 lb rider.
Weaknesses:None so far.
Bike Setup:Stock.
Bottom Line:I've got about 170 miles on the bike. The small reflectors on the pedals fell off on the first ride...I imagine that happens on all of them because it's a terrible design. Other than that the bike has been great...I ride mainly on the dirt so the reflectors were no big deal.

I weigh 200 lbs and I beat the hell out of the bike on the trail...mainly because I THINK I can jump over all kinds of stuff...and the bike takes the abuse when I don't make it. This thing just keeps going. I like it alot.

I bought it as an entry level bike and as such it is performing, indeed exceeding my expectations. If you are looking for a good entry level bike and don't want ot spend a fortune then buy this bike. The fun per dollar ratio is great.

Favorite Trail:All of them
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $125.00
Purchased At:Craigslist
Strengths:Excellent value. Disc brake tabs, solid construction, workable componentry for the most part.
Weaknesses:The biggest weakness is the crankset. The left crank arm inexplicably fell off even though the bike has less than 100 miles on it! I'll replace the whole crankset because it appears the chainrings are riveted in place. That's a big cheap-out. My 4300 came with rim brakes, and the fork is terrible. My old '96 RockShox 21R was better than this one! Alivio components are good enough for a beginner, but will be among the next things to upgrade.
Similar Products Used:'96 Specialized Ground Control A1, Schwinn Mesa GSX (pre-Pacific but unsure of exact year)
Bike Setup:Stock, except new rear wheel and cassette (I got the bike missing those parts and at a significant savings). Obviously I will also be upgrading the cranks. It also came with a super wide comfort saddle, which my fiancee loves (it is her bike after all). A better fork will come along by mid next year.
Bottom Line:I bought the bike for my fiancee. She loves it except for the crank issue. If she's happy, I'm happy. My Mesa is a somewhat better bike in regards to componentry (9 speed Deore). I don't know if I would buy this bike complete for full price, but it's a decent solid frame, worthy of at least a few upgrades. If you're a beginner, buy it and know you may spend a bit down the road to stay happy. If you're a seasoned rider look elsewhere.

Strengths:Geometry. The frame has a nice upright riding position. It fits me perfectly.
Weaknesses:heavy
Similar Products Used:other mountain bikes..
Bike Setup:factory
Bottom Line:The frame geometry is great. What I don't like is that the bike weights 35 pounds. It is heavy and weights as much as my older mountain bike made of steel. Trek state that this bike is made out of their premium Alpha black aluminum but this thing weights as much as any other trek mountain bike made of white alpha aluminum. I think I should have went with a Cannondale instead.

Favorite Trail:Whatever I can find in the flats of West Texas
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $385.00
Purchased At:South Plains Cycles
Strengths:Given this is my first quality mtb, I would have to say its a great package deal for the money. The frame is rock solid and the bike has an overall great geometry. The components are trustworthy requires very little maintenance.
Weaknesses:The original suntour crank was junk, as many of the other reviews have indicated. My dealer stated that this had been an issue and quickly replaced it with a superior crank. The grips slide around a little much and could be replaced.
Similar Products Used:First MTB
Bike Setup:Stock with a Cateye computer
Bottom Line:I thoroughly enjoy riding this bike. When I first got the bug for mountain biking I purchased a Wal Mart Mongoose. This proved to be fruitless. I quickly returned the bike and went to South Plains Cycles where I found what riding a quality bike was like.

For the money, I have not found another bike that will perform and hold up as well as the 4300. The other bikes in its class with similar components didn't fare as well in the reviews I read. I now understand why.

The Gila fork ain't the best, but it does the job. The tires are not the best for off road, but they are great for dual purpose use.

The bikes geometry is fantastic. I am 200+ lbs and I can yank the bike around all day. Sand, mud, dirt and gravel are easily traversed on the 4300. My hat goes off to Trek for an affordable, quality bike that has hooked me on riding mountain bikes.

Bottom Line:bought this bike over 2 years ago as I first started mtn biking - didn't want to spend a ton of $ before I knew whether or not I'd stick with it. Have put at least a couple thousand miles on it since. I was 250 lbs when I started, riding mostly rocky desert trails, and it has held up very well. I talk about upgrading to a new bike but this one has worked out so well I'm having a hard time justifying the upgrade. Great bike to start out with - it'll take you further than you expect.

Strengths:Looks good, rides smooth, quality parts and it can take a beating.
Weaknesses:stock tires could have been better, stem seems to be on the weak side
Bike Setup:Trek 4300, Panaracer Fire FR 2.40, WTB motoraptor 2.14, WTB speed V saddle.
Bottom Line:Great bike for what I paid for it. I have been riding since I was 5, but started out in BMX. Pretty serious young rider, and as time went on riding got pushed out more and more. Finally back into the sport and switched it up to mountain biking. I have not had the experience on this bike to give it a great rating, but from what I can see it has alot of potential. I will post a follow-up review after I have the time to break a few parts (bones and metal) :)

Bottom Line:I read a few reviews people complaining about this bike... cant bottom out the fork even on a big jump front wheel first... then they say the bike fell apart from light riding BS TO YOU PAL!!!!!! THIS BIKE IS NOT A DIRT JUMP BIKE OR FREE RIDE BIKE!!!! Anyway, I am 250 pounds solid. I ride xc hard. I never had the frame faulter. I knew when i bought the bike I needed to upgrade, and I did... the frame is nimble and quick on sharp turns.
IT works best with 100mm fork. I tried 80, too steep head angle, 135, too slack. 100mm is perfect.

Strengths:frame. the large frames are comfortable for trail riding / the frame may be a good trail frame to build up
Weaknesses:alot. the components are garbage
derailer
crank
pedals
brakes
Bike Setup:new crank - i dont know what kind but its a stronger replacement the shop put in after enough trouble and complaining
Bottom Line:the bike parts all of them are just weak, the bracket has broken off, the top cog on the derailer has come loose and fallen off, the derailer itself is never in tune it it skips and hops, it will randomly slip under force when im pedaling causing me to fall out of a catwalk , crash, or knee the handle bars, the crank is horrible, the pedal arms would always loosen up - the left one would always be loose no matter how tight i put it - it striped twice even the shop tried to tighten it - but the shop finaly put in a new crank and its holding up - i wish i could say its worth it but i dont even ride very hard and its just weak - maybe the 4500 or higher models are better but im just not happy with it - and the rims are very weak i even through the front rim off a bit but the machined rims are nice for v brakes - but i dont see this being a smart buy - if ur just goin to go on bike paths, back roads, pavement and grass i could see it working if u just ride gently with some catwalking and simple stunts but anymore and it will be a dissapointment in a short time, it is so bad my friends use u ride a trek as a burn

This bike is the worst bike I have ever owned. The rst shocks are complete crap. They are extremely hard, and I cant even bottom them out on a big jump, landing on the front wheel, hard. Strengths:(ONLY) good for beginners or people who dont do it heavy dooty. Good strong frame ive crashed too many times braking bones and my bike frame is still beautiful.
Weaknesses:shocks are baby and bottom out. Not for dirt jumping. Replace tires to much at least 3 times for me now. Seat post is cheap and brakes replaced that twice. Brakes are very squeaky after getting wet.Grip only good on light dirt and cement. seat hurts your ass. front brake will fall off after a few hard landing.
Similar Products Used:now use specilazed and kona bikes much more strong durable and better for jumping.
Bike Setup:standard
Bottom Line:Only buy this bike if your a beginner and are not that serious about riding. If so.... replace shocks seat and brakes and tires with better ones

The value is aight

Strengths:-has a very solid feel; you feel empowered to ride through anything!
Weaknesses:-a bit on the heavy side but lighter than the Giant ATX (740?) (I'm comparing both bikes w/o disc brakes).
-though the seatpost looks pretty cool, it's only 300mm in length. It's good that the width is 31.6mm which is the 3rd widest seatpost around but the length should be 350mm or 400mm especially since the bike's top tube is very tilted and , thus, fairly low. I'm not a tall guy (5ft 7) and yet I'm going to be seatpost shopping soon.
Similar Products Used:99 Gary Fisher Marlin (mtn bike)
06 Trek 7.3 FX (hybrid)
Bike Setup:-Just added Zoom bar extensions- very worth it.
-Stock components but if I decide to do an expedition tour, I will change its components over to Shimano XT for the most part. I'll also change its 32 spoke Bontrager rims over to Sun Rhyno Lite rims or Alex Adventurer rims (36 spokes) w/ XT hubs for most durability), change its Suntour crank to the Sugino XD600 crank. I'd also change the fork over to a steel rigid one; I'm most used to that and would like to reduce the weight and not be robbed of fwd momentum esp. on paved paths.
Bottom Line:Definitely recommended whether you're looking to hit trails on weekends or planning on doing a big, self-supported expedition tour. Why, the latter? For an aluminum bike, this has a strong frame (according to professional reviews and XC racers.

Strengths:good geometry, light, good components, shifts well
Weaknesses:the front fork. it's non responsive, springy when you don't want it to be, not springy when you want it to be, and just doesn't feel right. also the seat is uncomfortable (but what are you sitting down for, anyway? ;p)
Similar Products Used:various department store mtn bikes
Bike Setup:stock except for the front fork which I replaced with a marzocchi bomber z3 light 98, plus a new handlebar and some bar ends.
Bottom Line:great bike for the price, definitely get it if it's $300 or less. you can make do with the stock front suspension fork but if you replace it, it will make a world of difference.

also, the stock tektro brakes aren't that good.. they are functional, but i am replacing them with avid single digit 7s soon.

once the bug bites you and you upgrade the front fork and the brakes, you will have one ferocious trail-eating machine!!

Strengths:Feels good in general, strong frame, seat feels good, medium weight, great bike FOR THE PRICE.
Weaknesses:The front gears take an extra click to get into the 3rd gear, annoying, tires came out of true very quickly, brakes could be stronger, need to switch them out for disc ASAP. Tires are okay, but am looking to switch them out with a tires that have more teeth for uphill climbing, less slip.
Bike Setup:Factory, unchanged (hopefully not for long)
Bottom Line:This is a VERY nice bike for beginners wanting to feel out trails and XC. It is durable enough, but any breaks or adjustments force you to get familiar with the mechanical maintenance with bikes (which I never had). I bought the bike in 2004, it was a 2003. Strengths:Strong frame!!! I'm a larger rider and it takes A LOT of abuse...for the price it is a solid bike. If you think for $300-400 your going to get the best, think again
Weaknesses:Tires....they suck, replace and see the diff. Broke the rear deraileur, replaced w/ LX much better. Fork bottoms out, needs to upgade. Bent seat 3rd ride, cheap plastic holding bar in front.
Bike Setup:ODI ruffians, WTB Speed seat, LX rear deraileur, Sun Zu Zu pedals, Kenda Blue groove 2.35 stick E in front...
Bottom Line:Like I said, for the price it is a good bike to get back into biking. Allows you to see how you like to ride and upgrade as you go...Handles everything i have thrown at it (or it into!). 2-3 ft. drops, skinnies, tight single track... And like I said, i am no small rider, 5'10" 225. Some parts brake, but it is a entry level bike. REPLACE THE TIRES!!! You'll be amazed....and the fork needs to go, but it somewhat does its job. If you buy this bike w/ the right mind set you will not be dissapointed, but if you are looking for a bombproof bike, spend more $$$$$. Moving more towards freereiding, next up kona Scrap...

Frame is extremely strong, and I haven't managed to break a weld on it yet. Strong Handlebar, I can't tell you how many trees i've ran into and it's still holding up.
Weaknesses:Front Derailleur sucks really bad. My 3rd gear grinds when I shift into it, pretty much making it impossible to use. Grips wear out really fast. Broke my seat post within the first 6 months. The rubber boot on my Fork came loose all of the time until I got it glued back onto the fork.

The front fork was a bit stiff so I got some gel grips and a Manitou Trace fork (not much of an upgrade but more plush than the RST Gila) and it holds up like a champ. Strengths:Frame, my silver '07 finish is sharp. Buying at a Trek dealer was an awesome decision, their support/service is excellent. They have gone above and beyond what I would expect from a dealer and I would certainly buy from them again. They were awesome about upgrading my crankset (see below)
Weaknesses:Crankset: The SR Suntour crankarms are made out of softer metal, and the (single) nut holding the arms to the bottom bracket came undone early and often. I tightened it up while on the trail, but it came loose and eventually rounded off the square that the bottom bracket attatches to. The bottom bracket also started squeaking sometimes. As a sidenote, I weight 175 lbs, and the arms fell off multiple times until they finally stripped out. If you're lighter, it might work out better for you, but I somehow doubt it. I can't say that this came as a shock to me.
C-Series Front derailleur: It leaves much to be desired. It wouldn't shift the big ring on my (upgraded) LX Crankset.
Similar Products Used:Misc garage sale/campus commuter/bargain mtb's.
Bike Setup:2007 Trek 4300: Deore LX Crankset; Deore front derailleur; Alivio rear derailleur; Shimano M520 clipless pedals;

See http://www2.trekbikes.com/bikes/bike.php?bikeid=1018600&f=18 for the rest.
Bottom Line:This is a great started XC bike if you're light and on a budget. In hindsight, I'd just buy the 4500 rather than have spent the money on the Deore LX crankset. Then you'd recieve an overall upgrade for the same price and probably won't run into the same problems that I did. Trek was awesome and gave me retail on the SR Suntour crankset towards the purchase of the upgrade. Everything else is pretty solid. With my current setup, the factory fork/wheels (RST Gila T6/Bontrager Camino) have survived lots of small drop offs, hopping, and several flights of 10+ stairs. Granted the fork is nothing to brag about, but it thanklessly does its job on the trail and for a 4 mile round trip commute to work. I gave a 4 overall as the Trek service more than compensated for the crappy crankset, and a 4 for value rating because for the money, you do get a lot of bike in comparision to what other manufacturers offer for around the same price.

Weaknesses:Front fork isn't the best, front derailleur works, but isn't that good (bottom of the line - shimano).
Similar Products Used:Specialized Hardrock, Trek 3900
Bike Setup:Stock, but I want to get some Crank Brother's Candys.
Bottom Line:This is a great bike for the price I paid. I went for this over the hardrock because I liked how it felt. I would like to upgrade to clipless pedals, just to get more power, but it rides fine with platforms. This is definitely a bike you should check out if you're in the market for an entry level mountain bike. I'm 14, but I think this would be good for anyone who wants to get into mountain biking. If you have more money I would say go for the 6000 instead, but that's about $250 more. I don't know that the 4500 is that much worth the extra 120 dollars. So I went with this. It's a great bike for the cost, could be upgraded as the parts break, but otherwise, I'm very happy.

Strengths:great frame, light and strong. has great shifting if the bike is tuned,
really user friendly. great beginner bike for the money.
Weaknesses:shocks are a little stiff.
the front derailer doesn't work as well as the back derailer. otherwise pretty good
Similar Products Used:trek 4500, trek EX fuel 8
Bottom Line:great bike for cheap. not the best bike. could use an upgrade on the front derailer/better fork. otherwise really great. rides nice and smooth, is not diffucult going up those steep hills. if your a pro looking for a good bike this is not it. but if you are a weekend warrior and want to get a good bike for how much you pay for it but want too stay low this is your bike. is funner to ride with bar ends. over all a really good bike for weekend warriors.

Price Paid: $390.00
Strengths:Good components. Weight distribution on bike makes jumps fairly easy to land. Front shock absorbs vibrations; It may not be top of the line but works well.
Weaknesses:If you encounter a lot of terrain, i.e. root in the trail, the chain will sometimes slip to the adjacent gear, which can be corrected easily by pedaling but it can get irritating. It doesn't do this all the time though.
Similar Products Used:Giant Rincon, Specialized Hard Rock
Bike Setup:Yellow, Silver, 18" frame, out of box components, see Trek website for details on 2006 model
Bottom Line:A GREAT entry level mountain bike. This bike has similar components to my late bicycle, a Giant Rincon, but I actually find the 2006 Trek 4300 nicer than the newer Giant bikes (Rincon, etc). After my first ride this past weekend, the bike performs well under stress. Jumps, hops, and tight turns are handled well. Have a few friends that are good mountain bikers and they agree that this bike was a great purchase.

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $380.00
Purchased At:CyclePath
Strengths:Reputable frame, established company, great colour scheme (yellow and grey), overall looks.
Weaknesses:Top dollar for components, due to the brand. RST shocks feel cheap. Crank sqeaks a bit when pedalling hard.
Similar Products Used:Other friend's bikes (Giant Yukon, Trek 4500, Gary Fischer wahoo), was considering a K2 ZED 2.0, Columbia, or Kuwahara
Bike Setup:stock
Bottom Line:As this was my first MTB, and I have the summer off, I researched OBSESSIVELY what would be the best bike for the money. Could have saved more and got a better bike, but would have wasted at least another riding season, and i'm not that snobby about having to have a bike that costs half as much as my car. Haven't ridden it much yet, so can't comment on trail-handling ability, but will update soon. Seems like a neat ride though. I have a feeling I should have got a dual though, b/c I think drops are going to be fun. To do it over again, I would have looked into the new Kuwaharas, or Columbia, since almost all frames from nearly all companies are made by a small handful of companies in Taiwan who distribute them to all the other companies who then just put their brand name and paint job on them. I was reeled in by the "buy from a bike shop, b/c dept. stores don't know what their doing" (so what- you can get the same bike, better components, WAY cheaper just under a less-known name (i.e. Columbia, which are bikes made by Ironhorse, or the returning Kuwahara brand (Kuwahara Savage seemed like a great buy, but I just couldn't find any info anywhere other than the store selling them).
Nutshell: good starter to learn/thrash on, and upgrade as you decide which components are worth spending more money on for you're style/level of riding. Look into the new Kuwahara, or Columbia bikes (Columbia Tasman: Hayes Disc brakes, RockShocks J2, alluminum frame, solid drivetrain, for around $400 American dollars...)
Tough decision, but the sooner you just MAKE one, the sooner you'll be on the trail! Good luck, and keep the rubber side down!

Strengths:Absolutely a great frame. @ major crashes in the past 2 years and the frame is "A" okay.
Weaknesses:Forks suck BIG time.
Bike Setup:I upgraded to all Deore components. I also installed SP545 clipless pedals, carbon race saddle, Hutchison AirLite tires, Shimano XTR chain and Richley Comp stem.
Bottom Line:Great starter bike. I'm on my third year of recreation racing and have placed mid pack every race.

Purchased At:Beacon
Strengths:Strong frame, good components for the price range, good low gear for climbing hills, good bike to upgrade, lifetime warranty on the frame.
Weaknesses:Very stiff suspension fork
Similar Products Used:Own a Diamondback Traverse, I looked at the Specialized Hardrock, GT Avalanche 3.0, Jamis Cross Country, Trek 3700 and 3900
Bike Setup:Replaced fork with RockShox Judy J3 and soon to be added Avid Single Digit 7 V-brakes. Otherwise stock.
Bottom Line:A good value for the money. I compared it to several other brands, I liked the components plus the color and design of the frame so I went with this. Some other bikes in the price range had Acera derailleurs, this has an Alivio which is a step up. It shifts smoothly for me, I mainly shift the rear derailleur and the shifter seems precise so far. Overall I am happy with the setup for my style of riding. The only thing that I did not like was the stock RST Gila T6 fork, it was very stiff and didnt feel much better than the old rigid fork I had. So I replaced it with a Judy J3 to soak up the bumps, and so far so good. I use the bike for some spirited XC riding, not for large jumps or any huge drops so this will suit me fine. With the price of the fork ($135 on Jensonusa), I could have bought a higher level bike, but hindsight is 20/20. And then I wouldnt have the fun of upgrading it and customizing it. New brakes are on the way just because I got bitten by the bug.

Bike Setup:marzzochi MX COMP AIR 105mm forks, XC317 rims, deore hubs, panaracer XC pro 2.1, SDG BelAir saddle, FSA stem, Deore/LX chainset inc mechs.
Bottom Line:bought as 6 month old ex-hire bike from Swinnertons at Cannock Chase,UK. (£170). Used at Afan(all routes), cannock, cwmcarn, nant-yr-arian, local trails/bridleways and a bit of road. As a result was completely worn out after a first two years of ownership. Rear wheel rim worn beyond limit. BB, chain, sprockets and both mechs all worn and replaced with better spec parts. Also treated it to 105mm comp air forks and new seat (zebra pattern!) Now very nice to ride. FSA 90mm 5 deg XC Stem was added for better riding position. No moans about it wearing out, it took abuse way beyond what it was designed for. Will stay with it until it all wears out again at which point it will be time for a full suss.
