    Favorite Trail:North Shore
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
    Price Paid: $329.00
    Purchased At:Bicycles Plus
Strengths:Has held up like a champ. Only use it for what it was designed for (unimproved trails, no air) Never had a single issue with it.
Weaknesses:Came w/ 2.0 tires, wish they were 2.2 as in brochure.
    Similar Products Used:New to dirt.
Bike Setup:Stock. Turned up the fork preset to the stiffer end to handle only the worst bumps to avoid bottoming.
Bottom Line:I ride a couple of miles on streets to the trail so I didn't want too low of gearing. As in any sport using equipment, the more $$ spent the better you'll be but I'm not spending $1k on something w/o a motor. Was looking at the Trek 3700 but the cassette broke on my 3 second test ride, so I went up a notch. Got used to the seat after 2 rides and feels fine and is actually larger than a friend's 4500. For the money it would be hard to find a better bike.

Strengths:great beginner bike. relatively cheap for a decent frame. light enough for me.
Weaknesses:terrible tires, fork, and bottom bracket.
Similar Products Used:Haro, Trek, and Specialized hardtails
Bike Setup:Avid BB7's with Rhyno Lite rims, Race Face Evolvo Crankset, Shimano clipless pedals, Kenda tires
Bottom Line:This was a great bike for the money, but i ride a lot more than this bike can take. Fork is in really bad shape. I broke the bottom bracket so i got the new crankset.V-brakes are crappy so i bought the disc brakes and wheels. i spent a lot on upgrades and could have gotten a much nicer bike for the money i have put into it. Bike is good if you plan to ride every once in a while. if you plan to do anything serious, save up some money and get something nicer.

    Purchased At:Bicycle Sport Inc.
    Strengths:Solid Bike... relatively light.
Weaknesses:Grips slide off without provication, chain slippage every once in a while.
Similar Products Used:Haro, Diamondkrack, other various treks, fuji.
Bike Setup:Stock with the exception of nashbar clipless and odi intense locking grips.
Bottom Line:I got this bike mainly for commute but wanted something i could hit up the cherokee trails and any other off-road areas on a whim. i was gentle at first with it but once i changed out the pedals and grips i tested the waters with more speed and aggression off-road. My fear wasnt whether the frame was going to hold, but of the other stock components. Bontrager did good with this one, wheels are still true and still yet to bottom out the forks. Bicycle Sport liked it so much they are now carrying it in their store(I had to order it).

    Strengths:soild frame, strong rims
    Weaknesses:Tires, pedal arm, rear brakes
    Similar Products Used:Giant Tance 2
Bike Setup:kenda 2.6 front tire, irc 2.1 rear tire
Bottom Line:This is a great bike! I rode it very hard for over a year. the only problems that i had were that the stock tires sucked on the trail. I replaced them with kenda 2.6 kenetics tires, but the rear tires began to rum into the frame so i replaced it with a 2.1 irc tire. Also, the screw that holds the pedal arm to the crank on the right side keeps comming loose, i am going to try some lock tight. That sould fix the problem. Additionaly, my rear brake brokes when on of the srews that holds the brakes cable striped out. Yet, this could be because i nalways kept my brakes very tigth and rode the bike way harder then it was ment to be ridin., But it is still a dangerous problem. Yet, overall this is a great beginnger bike and a great value

    Strengths:Strong Frame, Smooth Ride, Affordable.
    Weaknesses:Saddle
Similar Products Used:Cheap Huffy Mountain Bike
Bike Setup:Factory Setup, Replaced Saddle with Specialized BG2 Sport Saddle
Bottom Line:I'm a light to medium rider that was on a strict budget. I did some research and came up with this bike. It's perfect if you do medium to light riding. The factory saddle is a little rough, but you can get a Specialized BG Sport for about $30. I can see why others don't like the factory fork, but it really doesn't bother me that much. I guess if you plan on doing some heavier riding, you'd have to upgrade the fork. A really great bike for the price.

Strengths:I'm a beginner and so far, this bike has done great things for me. I wrecked (with the bike flying over a 1 ft bridge) and nothing happened to the frame (the chains popped loose). So far, I only do some minor/beginner/wuss-level MTBing, and nothing wrong so far. Handles those huge roots pretty well.
Weaknesses:SADDLE HURTS YOUR GLUTES!!!! I highly recommend getting a new saddle; I put a piece of gel padding seat thingy, and its still painful. Painful as in it hurts like heck getting up from a chair. The Fizik Nisene is comfy though; pedals are kinda cheap quality

Strengths:really good for the money. i've used it outside of its specific uses and its holding up perfectly. durable during rocky sections.
Weaknesses:stock fork (rst gila t8) has a factory defect (stiff spring). handlebars are a weird shape not too bad though.
Similar Products Used:08' stumpjumper FS, rockhopper '08
Bike Setup:Trek 4300 08 v-brake version, wtb rocket v saddle, panaracer fire xc pro, chainstay protector(specialized), easton flatboy pedals, titec fast al stem 110mm 0 degree. new spring for free replacing the stiff one.
Bottom Line:This is a super bike for 500 dollars. it can do a lot of things and is no commuter bike. it can handle pretty tough trails although i wouldnt want to dirt jump with it because of the rst crappy fork. the fork got a new spring under warrenty for the "defect".(the defect was just to stiff, no safety problem though) made a call to trek and few days later wallahh!. I use this bike for learning wheelies and other tricks and its super. for 500 dollars this bike can take on any of the expensive bikes easily. ITS all on the RIDER.

Strengths:(ONLY) good for beginners or people who dont do it heavy dooty. Good strong frame ive crashed too many times braking bones and my bike frame is still beautiful.
Weaknesses:shocks are baby and bottom out. Not for dirt jumping. Replace tires to much at least 3 times for me now. Seat post is cheap and brakes replaced that twice. Brakes are very squeaky after getting wet.Grip only good on light dirt and cement. seat hurts your ass. front brake will fall off after a few hard landing.
Similar Products Used:now use specilazed and kona bikes much more strong durable and better for jumping.
    Bike Setup:standard

Strengths:-has a very solid feel; you feel empowered to ride through anything!
Weaknesses:-a bit on the heavy side but lighter than the Giant ATX (740?) (I'm comparing both bikes w/o disc brakes).
-though the seatpost looks pretty cool, it's only 300mm in length. It's good that the width is 31.6mm which is the 3rd widest seatpost around but the length should be 350mm or 400mm especially since the bike's top tube is very tilted and , thus, fairly low. I'm not a tall guy (5ft 7) and yet I'm going to be seatpost shopping soon.
Similar Products Used:99 Gary Fisher Marlin (mtn bike)
    06 Trek 7.3 FX (hybrid)
Bike Setup:-Just added Zoom bar extensions- very worth it.
-Stock components but if I decide to do an expedition tour, I will change its components over to Shimano XT for the most part. I'll also change its 32 spoke Bontrager rims over to Sun Rhyno Lite rims or Alex Adventurer rims (36 spokes) w/ XT hubs for most durability), change its Suntour crank to the Sugino XD600 crank. I'd also change the fork over to a steel rigid one; I'm most used to that and would like to reduce the weight and not be robbed of fwd momentum esp. on paved paths.
Bottom Line:Definitely recommended whether you're looking to hit trails on weekends or planning on doing a big, self-supported expedition tour. Why, the latter? For an aluminum bike, this has a strong frame (according to professional reviews and XC racers.

Weaknesses:Front shock is sometimes non responsive and sometimes too responsive, the stock stem I found to be a bit too high and the brakes tend to squeak.
Similar Products Used:Giant Yukon, Jamis and Mongoose
Bike Setup:Stock except I switched out the 25 degree rise stem for a Bontrager Select 10 degree rise.
Bottom Line:This bike has a very stiff frame which is great for pedaling up steep climbs. A great bike for the price and if you're just starting out on beginner or intermediate trails.

    Duration Product Used:3 months
    Price Paid: $250.00
    Purchased At:craigslist
Strengths:good geometry, light, good components, shifts well
Weaknesses:the front fork. it's non responsive, springy when you don't want it to be, not springy when you want it to be, and just doesn't feel right. also the seat is uncomfortable (but what are you sitting down for, anyway? ;p)
Similar Products Used:various department store mtn bikes
Bike Setup:stock except for the front fork which I replaced with a marzocchi bomber z3 light 98, plus a new handlebar and some bar ends.
Bottom Line:great bike for the price, definitely get it if it's $300 or less. you can make do with the stock front suspension fork but if you replace it, it will make a world of difference.

also, the stock tektro brakes aren't that good.. they are functional, but i am replacing them with avid single digit 7s soon.

once the bug bites you and you upgrade the front fork and the brakes, you will have one ferocious trail-eating machine!!

    good bike, buy it!

Strengths:A light frame that's taken six years of beating with no signs of letting up; perfect geometry (women: it pays to try the mens bikes); and of course the price.
Weaknesses:I wouldn't take too many drops of over 30cm on the barely functional front fork. Front derailleur has trouble shifting down onto the middle cog.
Similar Products Used:Testrode GTs, Rocky Mountains, Gary Fishers, Haros, Raleighs, and Schwinns in the same price range.
Bike Setup:Stock except for the cheapo Wellgo clipless pedals. Replaced bottom bracket this year. Rides well around town with some slicks.
Bottom Line:Fantastic value for money. An excellent entry level bike that you can upgrade as your skill level improves.

Strengths:Feels good in general, strong frame, seat feels good, medium weight, great bike FOR THE PRICE.
Weaknesses:The front gears take an extra click to get into the 3rd gear, annoying, tires came out of true very quickly, brakes could be stronger, need to switch them out for disc ASAP. Tires are okay, but am looking to switch them out with a tires that have more teeth for uphill climbing, less slip.
Bike Setup:Factory, unchanged (hopefully not for long)
Bottom Line:This is a VERY nice bike for beginners wanting to feel out trails and XC. It is durable enough, but any breaks or adjustments force you to get familiar with the mechanical maintenance with bikes (which I never had). I bought the bike in 2004, it was a 2003. But I didn't really get into off-roading until this year.

Strengths:Strong frame!!! I'm a larger rider and it takes A LOT of abuse...for the price it is a solid bike. If you think for $300-400 your going to get the best, think again
Weaknesses:Tires....they suck, replace and see the diff. Broke the rear deraileur, replaced w/ LX much better. Fork bottoms out, needs to upgade. Bent seat 3rd ride, cheap plastic holding bar in front.
Bike Setup:ODI ruffians, WTB Speed seat, LX rear deraileur, Sun Zu Zu pedals, Kenda Blue groove 2.35 stick E in front...
Bottom Line:Like I said, for the price it is a good bike to get back into biking. Allows you to see how you like to ride and upgrade as you go...Handles everything i have thrown at it (or it into!). 2-3 ft. drops, skinnies, tight single track... And like I said, i am no small rider, 5'10" 225. Some parts brake, but it is a entry level bike. REPLACE THE TIRES!!! You'll be amazed....and the fork needs to go, but it somewhat does its job. If you buy this bike w/ the right mind set you will not be dissapointed, but if you are looking for a bombproof bike, spend more $$$$$. Moving more towards freereiding, next up kona Scrap...

Strengths:Rear Derailleur is great for XC riding and single track riding. Fork is good for a 80mm fork, but could use a bit more travel for us 200+lb. guys. Frame is extremely strong, and I haven't managed to break a weld on it yet. Strong Handlebar, I can't tell you how many trees i've ran into and it's still holding up.
Weaknesses:Front Derailleur sucks really bad. My 3rd gear grinds when I shift into it, pretty much making it impossible to use. Grips wear out really fast.
