Favorite Trail:a muddy one
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $500.00
Purchased At:bikeworld
Strengths:Solid frame, good entry level brakes, ok weight
Weaknesses:DRIVETRAIN, gears,
Similar Products Used:Haro V2
Bike Setup:Stock with exception to a azonic big drop saddle
Bottom Line:Trek should stick with road bikes.

I've had this bike for about a year now and I would argue this bike has made me ride less. The drivetrain is horrible and kills the experience. The bike constantly requires tuning up and cannot stay in gear. This is not due to my negligence but I believe its a product of the components in the drivetrain.

In addition, the fork leaves much to be desired. Dampening is laughable, with a cheap mongoose having better travel.

All togther I would not recommend this bike to a friend. I have really not been impressed with it whatsoever. If you're going to go hardtail and you are considering this bike, go cheaper and get a giant/haro. If you think you're buying a quality bike and don't mind spending a bit more, I'd get a better one.

Strengths:Good Frame, rims and drivetrain isint bad for the price of the bike.
Weaknesses:Tires , Forks
Similar Products Used:None
Bike Setup:Factory except new tires.
Bottom Line:This bike is the best bang for the buck , i hvae had it on a semi technical single track since i got it and it is holding up great. I changed the tires cause the jones acx tires did not hook up at all in muddy conditions, even light mud these things lost traction.

The forks arent to bad once they are broke in but i wouldnt trust them on any drop over 4 feet , for an entry level fork it isint to bad. The shimano disc brakes are very nice , great stopping power.

Price Paid: $580.00

Strengths:Not bad price, good strong frame, decent disk brakes, not alot of gear skipping.
Weaknesses:The seat is an ass killer, and the fork is not very good. It's decent enough, but not great.
Similar Products Used:Specialized Rockhoppper and Hardrock Disk
Bike Setup:Factory
Bottom Line:It's a good entry level bike. The main concern for most people is its fork and its durability. But it seems most people who are complaining about it falling apart are talking about it falling apart after like 4+ feet jumps/drops. Well if anyone read the goddamn manual they would see it says that the bike ISN'T BUILT FOR THAT. Reading right of the manual, "Bicycle made to ride on Conditions 1 and 2, plus rough trails, small obstacles, smooth technical areas and areas where tires MOMENTARILY leave the ground: NOT FOR JUMPS." And thats right out of the trek manual that came with it. Everyone who says it sucks for anything other than whats said above is talking out their ass, simple as that.

Read the manual, see what it's built for, and if you like it and it fits what you want to do and you like it, like I did/do, go ahead and buy it it's a great value. If it doesn't fit you, get a different bike and don't knock this one.

Strengths:FRAME,LOOKS,DISC BRAKE, BANG FOR YOUR BUCK
Weaknesses:FRONT FORK AND SADDLE
Similar Products Used:GT, FUJI, TREK
Bottom Line:My neighbor accross the street owns a bike shop selling cannondale, scott and GT. I was right about to pull the trigger on a 2009 Cannondale F5 but to tell you the truth the bike is $750! I rode both for a week before I purchased them. I was in love with the Matte Black which both are. I could not justify (for my type of riding) to spend the extra $250 for the cannondale. I also looked at the specialized rock hopper which is a great bike as well. If I was going to spend upwards of a $1000 which I am sure I will soon since I am really starting to get into biking again I would look long and hard at the specialized. That is a tough bike to beat for the price. I am extremely happy with my choice! Everytime somebody sees my bike they love it and think that I dropped at least $1000! I will be replacing the saddle, front fork and pedals this week which will make this $500 a absolute beast! You can go to your local sports authority and drop $350 on a diamond back or shwinn (which both used to be great bikes when I was growing up but now are mass produced and suck) or you can spend an extra $150 ride the hell out of it and ebay it for $300!!! Treks regardless of the model, year and overal condition still bring a HUGE re-sale value so to me this bike is an absolute NO BRAINER!!!!

Strengths:Very sturdy, good shifting action, good brakes for the price. Overall a great buy, and it is an excellent road bike too!
Weaknesses:brakes squealed a bit when the bike was new. The tires are great but have a very short life. The whole bike itself is a bit heavy. Also the front fork seems like its complete crap, going to upgrade to a tora series fork.
Similar Products Used:Jamis Durango 1 Mongoose(cant remember model)
Bike Setup:All stock and still kickin' after 1300 miles!
Bottom Line:Overall a very good machine, i have ridden it 1300 miles(havent changed the brakes yet either!). I am 15 so you know i put a beating on this bike. Its jumped many curbs etc. Its very stable and always keeps its cool. My only complaint are the breaks, they just dont have the right feel for me, but the modulation is great and they have excellent power after theyre broken in. Im considering switching to metal pads just for the extra power on trails as they do have a dit of fade. Overall, the best first good bike out there!

Weaknesses:Tires, saddle, front fork, pedals

Bike Setup:Stock except for clipless pedals, WTB Pro V comp saddle, Cane Creek S3 headset, and Panaracer Fire XC Pro tires.
Bottom Line:Good beginner bike for those interested in trying out the sport. Can be upgraded easily with better components a bit at a time for the budget conscious. Will be putting a new front fork on in a couple of days (Rockshox Tora 318 solo air) to replace the crappy stock RST Gila. The original tires were crap as was the saddle. Easily and cheaply replaced with far superior products. The headset died wore out after a year of hard riding. For the money a good bike which will be reliable and upgradeable. I can outperform other riders with $5000 Canondales on this bike and enjoy every minute of it. The RST fork is garbage. Look for a sale for a decent fork and you're in business. Go clipless at the firt opportunity and invest in good tires.

Weaknesses:Forks could be a lot better, however if you whack a bit of wd40 on them you get lot mor travel, the preload dials at the top of them do absolutly nothing. i will be upgrading them shortly. the cable disc brakes loosen quickly when you pull them quite hard. i will be upgrading them to hydraulics very soon.

When I test road it, the alley behind the shop was icy and snowy and I hadn't rode a bicycle for 10 years but this bike did great so I bought. Weaknesses:Forks, cranks (spyder is bent),tires, grips, seat

Bottom Line:I thought it was a excellent value for the money. Ive really enjoyed this bike other than some minor problems. I did not like the fork, even with the preload as tight as it would go it still sucked. I wasnt going to dump a bunch of money into a fork so I installed a Surly 1x1 ridgid fork and love it.

Ive been collecting some bits and peices on sale to make the bike that much better. I have some Shimano LX hydro brakes and shifter pods on the shelf waiting for a rear derailuer, rear cog, and chain.

Excellent bike for the money. If your just getting back into the sport or a first timer Id highly recommend it.

Strengths:Great looks, lightweight aluminum, smooth shifting action and disc brakes
Weaknesses:Saddle is a bit stiff and one day of moderate to hard riding showed that the lack of a chainstay guard was a shortcoming as well.
Similar Products Used:Checked out the cannondale f4 as well as some models from specialized and gary fisher from the $500-$1000 price range.
Bike Setup:stock except I added an aluminum frame pump and ordered a gebali chainstay guard which hasn't arrived yet. been waiting over a week
Bottom Line:The 2007 Trek 4300 Disc just fit me the best out of probably 6 hardtails that I test rode. The cannondale f4 was an outstanding bike as well except that it cost double what I paid for the trek. I found this bike to be a good performer which handles well in the woods (not sand, duh) and although I am no expert I have ridden many miles in the past so I believe I can judge reasonably. I think this is a good starter bike for those who want superior quality over what you'd get at places that don't specialize in bicycles. I didn't want to wait for a 2008 model because not much has changed and this design a mature enough. Mine is all silver which is nice and so I am hoping it will last a few years. If you're a serious cyclist with loads of money to burn though, probably should go for something else.

Weaknesses:The crank blew threw the bearings in about a month, I ride extremely hard on this xc bike. A lot of people down play the socks on this bike. I personally have no trouble with them. I have done some hard riding in the north east, rock gardens, jumps, and decent drops.
Similar Products Used:Trek 820, Caloi, Trek Y frame

Bottom Line:The bottom line is I my friends(Bruce, and Joe) ride hard with their full suspensions Trek Fuel Ex6, and Kona Kikapu deluxe. They have the advantage on the downhill, but when it comes to the uphill and rock gardens this hard tail preforms.I hope I helped you make a decision, with a couple of upgrades this bike will preform just as good as the rest, depending on the rider that is.

Purchased At:Bicycle Center of Issaquah
Strengths:Strong frame, serviceable derailleurs, Shimano mechanical disc brakes, good handling characteristics. All in all, a sturdy mount well suited for a beginning rider. Properly set up, everything works and nothing breaks (at least at my level).
Weaknesses:Tires wore out fairly fast. Front fork seems rather stiff with about 2.5 inches of travel, but better than nothing at all.
Bike Setup:Relaced the tires after a year of nearly daily riding, replaced the grips with Ergons, finally got the brakes adjusted right with new pads, added lights front and back, bottle holder and kickstand.
Bottom Line:My first MTB, in fact the first bike I've owned in 50 years. I walked into the only bike shop in town and bought the cheapest hardtail they had without knowing anything. Its turned out to be a good value: comfortable, climbs well and handles the moderate downhill trails I use with no problem, although I have to stand in the pedals most of the way down the rocky sections. Next stop, a Remedy 6 or similar full suspension model at about 5 times the cost.

Strengths:Frame ?
Bontrager Ranger wheels are OK but heavy, Shimano disc brakes are OK but squeel when wet. Some components like handlebar and stem are OK, Shimano hubs
Weaknesses:Heavy compared to similar bikes tried, RST Gila fork is rubbish, SR Suntour crank (chainring was warped on mine), front deraileur can not be adjusted well so chain rubs, Wellgo pedals do not spin well, brutal saddle, integrated brake levers/pods mean limited upgrade path without changing whole groupset. Heavy, Heavy, Heavy
Bike Setup:Changed crank to Shimano Deore, changed to Shimano m540 SPD pedals, forks will be next when I can afford one
Bottom Line:This bike is Heavy over 15KG. It just doesn't want to go uphill. The mechanical shocks give a brutal ride on anything but the smoothest surface. Unless you are happy with crappy components and live in a flat area where you don't have to change gears then save your money and get something in the 6000 series.

Shifts fine , im roughly 175 6'1 and I stand up on climbs and doesn't skip a beat, Bontrager knobby tires work great too.Rapid shifters do wonders when want to just fly and just get away, feels more like a automatic transmission in a car really way it shifts instantly into the next gear
Weaknesses:The only thing that stands out that people that may want to look at when buy or have it already and want to upgrade something but not sure, Front shock , RST gila even at its stiffest position adjustment, did not find it stiff enough to hold up while off the saddle and pulling up a climb or any time when you wanted to gain more speed.

Before I buy the bike I looked onlike and got reviews and looked around at all LBS for a ideal bike to hit the trails and do some moderate off roading and something with a disc brake . For what I could afford without seeing just lent at the bottom of my wallet this was a great buy, with the Alivo rear deraileur standing up out the saddle the crank doesn't skip like some of the early cheaper brands. Who should buy this sort of bike someone like me who wants to play in the dirt and jump on the trails 5 days out of the week, who shouldn't, everyone that snobby and thinks the components arent good and paying double for a full suspension bike. My only point is , don't think less then 6 months is enough to experience whats good or bad about before you post the review. Best bet is to stay home and watch t.v. if you dont want to put any effort into shifting gears and having fun on a weekend or nice early morning before going to work...Can't go wrong with America Made Trek Bike....

Purchased At:B&J Bicycle
Strengths:Great entry level bike. X-treme light and easy to operate. Frame is tough, fork/shock not bad, holds up, rims are holding up for weekly rides on trails like Markham. Gears shift nicely, no problems that a basic tune can't fix. Pedals take a beating & get chewed up, may have to go to clips.
Weaknesses:Tires wear quickly, and pieces have actually chipped and/or broken completely off. Definitely looking at new tires already, but to their defense, they have taken a serious beating. Markham has several trails with sharp coral rock.
Similar Products Used:Kona Blast, Gary Fisher Marlin, Specialized Rockhopper, Giant, Iron Horse.
Bike Setup:Trek 4300 Disc STOCK!
Bottom Line:For the $$$ you can't go wrong with this hardtail. Bike has taken a serious beating on trails like Markham on a weekly basis. Like hardtail on these trails, seems easier on climbs, and can get speed quicker to take small jumps. Higher jumps & drops are harder on the back, so may look into full susp. in future to preserve my spine. I rode every bike I could before deciding on this one. The only one that came close was the Rockhopper. This was easy decision, plus B&J provide free maint. for life of bike as long as you own. Those guys are great! I'll give two BIG THUMBS UP! Thanks.

Price Paid: $525.00
Purchased At:Ciclomundo
Strengths:I ussually ride, mountain courses (not the cross country type)so far it has taken a a beating with no major flaws. Strong and light frame. For the price the rest of the equipment is right too.
Weaknesses:No big issues so far. Some minor gear problems, specially with the speed changes, tned not to accept some speeds until you play with the lever a little..
Similar Products Used:This is my first mountain bike. When younger used to be a BMX'er, SE Racing PK Ripper.
Bike Setup:Factory, just upgraded pedals to clip (Tein). Planning on upgrading the fork (no problems yet) but I've been recommended to do so.
Bottom Line:Cannot beat the value for money here, excellent entry level bike. I would certainly recommned for entry level bikers who can eventually upgrade to better components.

Price Paid: $500.00
Purchased At:Schellers cycle
Strengths:Solid Frame and great ergonomics
Weaknesses:A few of the components but it is a entry level bike
Bottom Line:It was my first mountain bike. I couldn't afford the best of the best so I went with a good starter bike. It's taken a beating over the last year and I have no complaints.

It will be upgraded slowly to better parts and to my liking.

The fork stinks for anyone over 170 lbs, I replaced mine.

Disk brakes are OK for mild riders, I replaced mine with Avid bb7's.

Crank and arms are ok for mild riders, I replaced mine with race face atlas.

I still have several upgrades to do on the bike.

Overall it's a great bike but if you ride hard and a Lot you will break parts and need to upgrade.
