Favorite Trail:fair hill
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $400.00
Purchased At:cycle fit
Strengths:great lightweight stiff agile frame. pretty good brakes. throw everything else away.
Weaknesses:the components are absolutely horrible, until you get a job. then you can upgrade every part of the bike down to the brake cables. then it can turn out to be an awesome hardtail you can go on to win the MA superseries on. try it its fun.
Similar Products Used:iron horse maverick 1.2(another awesome frame wrapped in dukey parts), other iron horse, c-dale rush six.
Bike Setup:rockshox duke sl u-turn, crank bros cobalt headset, crank bros smarty pedals, cane creek crono wam wheelset, avid brake levers, deore rapidfires, truv stylo crank, lx rear, lx front, sram pg950 cassette, shimano chain, ritchey skewers, bontrager saddle and seatpost, thats about it.
Bottom Line:this bike is an underestated frame that has so much potential its amazing. having replaced everything i got it down to about 23.5 lbs. i love it. its my only mtb and i race on it. god i love brand loyalty.
post script: im giving it a low value rating because all i really use now is the frame.

Bottom Line:Good bike for the money. shocks are stiff, i went through the stock tubes in about 1 week with minimal trail riding, deraileur seems to operate only half the time, and the saddle gets uncomfortable after about 3 miles. im getting a new cannondale f5 in september. good bike for beginners or experimenting with different setups.

Favorite Trail:Boyne
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $250.00
Purchased At:LBS
Strengths:Reliability, durable, strong frame
Weaknesses:Front fork
Bottom Line:This is the first and only bike Ive owned for mountain biking, so I dont have much to compare it to. Even so, after reading all complaints about bikes that cost 7 or 8 times as much, I can appreciate the simplicity of this bike. I ridden this bike for 4 years on the best trails that Michigan has to offer and I have never broken down on the trail, never been stranded, never had any problems. Dont get me wrong, the front fork is obviously not great (its a $300 bike!) but Ive been pretty hard on this bike and it has never let me down. I have no trouble hanging with my friends riding Stumpys and Konas (I should say they have no trouble riding with me), overall a great bike to introduce you to the sport. Remember its 90% rider, so dont be a techno-weenie.

Strengths:Great Frame, Durable Paint, Strong drivechain
Weaknesses:Stock forks (I Upgraded), Ride Height, Tires, Derailur
Similar Products Used:Trek 980 Hardtail (VERY old)
Bike Setup:Stock Everything but some 1995 Rock Shox Judy J1 Forks
Bottom Line:This is a great Hardtail and is durable for any trail. I may not be a huge mountain biker, but any bike that holds to geter on the trail, i can ride. The suspention really needs to be changed out, it is actually a hazard to have suspension that stiff.

Date Reviewed: April 6, 2006
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $340.00
Purchased At:Krusty's Bikes, Richmond, BC
Strengths:Super light. Nice saddle.
Weaknesses:Cheap components. The wheels are crap and will need to be trued. The brakes are horrible. Other than that, there's nothing really bad, but the componentry is just cheap.
Bike Setup:stock
Bottom Line:This bike is great for road riding. The suspension is pretty stiff, so you don't lose a lot of power while riding in the city. It's super light and the tires are knobby enough that it's pretty good for light trails. If you're looking to get into mountain biking, though, grab a more expensive hardtail.

Date Reviewed: September 28, 2005
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $350.00
Purchased At:Main Cycle Hamilton
Strengths:Great frame, relatively light weight, comfortable cockpit, handles well, good brakes, awesome seat
Weaknesses:Cheap components add to weight, pedals suck, tires need upgrading if you're going to ride extensively off road, and you should think about replacing the rims too, noisy but who cares, shifting rough and sloppy, the front forks are adequate but do bottom out on rough terrain,
Similar Products Used:none
Bike Setup:stock
Bottom Line:A great starter bike, and being an older model you can probably pick one up on sale or used. If you're just getting into mountain biking I would highly recommend this bike. If you're thinking of racing or doing any serious off-road riding, definitely spend the money on a better bike.

Strengths:Sweet sturdy frame, good shifting but its only a 7spd and its like bittom of the line shimano(acera)good paint double butted frame, like saddle good bar shape, good seatpost,Cranks?,brakes RULE!(the best v-brake I've ever used)Awesome cables.they are still in new condition and I've ridden this for a yr.
Weaknesses:Fork is a ...how do I say this...a piece of poo.It bottoms out on a wheelie and i weigh 93 lbs!It has no adjustment. It supposedly has 70mm of travel but I think it to be more like 30mm.All the components must be heavy because the frame is light and the bike(total) weighs almost 32lbs out of the box.tires are super heavy.Let me put it this way...they seem like hybrid tires although they do good in dry stuff.
Bike Setup:stock except tires and grips and pedals.
Bottom Line:good frame.

Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $400.00
Purchased At:Leffes cykel(leffes bikes)
Strengths:Darm good dubbel butted frame, nice color and a comfortable saddle...
Weaknesses:The components is not the best one, aspecially the "megarange" witch gives leaves to a huge differens between the first gear and the second and lastley the fork is quite heavy, and it only has an effective travel of about 30mm(I weight about 120 lb and nomather how hard i push it only goes 30cm)...
Similar Products Used:Trek 4500, Trek 6700,Crescent Imagine 500, and Scott YZ 4
Bike Setup:Only swithed to shimano Spd 520 instead of nylonplattforms...
Bottom Line:I bought this bike when on my 14th birthday, I´ve driven this bike quite hard and have desided to buy the 6500..
Althougt I´ve only ridden this beast for about 6 months, I have some experience and knowledge of this "avarage joe" bike...It has a very nice frame, it will tolarate some bashing, but if you wanna take it to the next level of biking, you shall consider some better components...

Strengths:VERY good frame. nice geometry, can do trials and some jumpin with it.
Weaknesses:Poor components.

Bike Setup:stock + aztec pads + Club roost bars, easton ea 70 stem. Upgrading forks, brakes and chain set after xmas.
Bottom Line:Bloody good bike. Light frame (lighter than my dad's $600 bike!) But the poor components add to the weight and the wheels are - put bluntly - crap. Buy this bike and upgrade it - you wont regret it. Anyone who is a beginner or serious amateur on a budget should get this bike. However i have the 2002 model which i prefer greatly to the new model in looks.

Favorite Trail:Any technical riding
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $345.00
Purchased At:Primo Sport
Strengths:What attracted me to this bike is definitely the light aluminium frame on this Treck4100. I have to agree with the rest of the gang here, what a great bike to get people to discover the rush of today’s new bike technology. This bike has opened my eyes to what a quality bike can give back.
Weaknesses:It's a hard tail!!
Similar Products Used:fuji
Bike Setup:Stock
Bottom Line:Don’t do dead drops of more or less 3 feet and the rims will keep you ridin’ straight.
If you like lifting off the ground, keep those Bontagers low in pressure (within specs).
Good bike to upgrade because of the resistent light frame.
If you wanna lower some vibrations invest on a low cost carbon stem & seat post.

Purchased At:Skiis and Bikes
Strengths:Frame, value, reasonable shifting.
Weaknesses:Wheels, pedals, saddle.
Bike Setup:stock setup with clipless pedal, LX brakes, reverse 7 degree 100mm stem, selle italia transam saddle
Bottom Line:What more could you ask for a bike under the $400 price range. It serve well for what it was made for. I am in fact suprise with how well it shift, though when it does it gives out a loud 'cling' sound and sometimes it skip a little, but you got what you paid for. Only real complain is the wheels. I only do some light trails riding with little roots, rocks and some logs no heigher then a curb or a big speed bump. And almost 4 months of using I've trued my wheels twice. Overall it is a very solid bike for those who are planning to do any crazy or too technical. A great entry level bike indeed for lighter use.

Date Reviewed: September 16, 2004
Duration Product Used:3 months
Purchased At:$289
Strengths:Value & toughness.
Weaknesses:Shifting, Drivetrain
Bottom Line:I've given my 4100 a summer of bashing, and it's lasted. It rode technical XC trails with obstacles, small drops up to 3ft, small jumps, and a bit of downhill action. Not always cushy on obstacles, but the cockpit feels great.

Only problem I've had is a bent rim, which was done jumping onto a curb.

Componentry is inferior across the board, but the frame feels nice and can be ridden hard.

I plan to upgrade to a better bike soon, but the one is a great enry-level econo-ride.

Strengths:great frame, nice quick fire shifters, strong brakes for pads,
Weaknesses:derailuers!!!! they are shimano, but the bottom of the line. If you can't get enough of that clanking gear griding sound these are for you
Similar Products Used:specialized
Bike Setup:stock
Bottom Line:This is a great bike for the money. I see no reason not to upgrade to the 4300 for only a few buck more. It has a much nicer drive train. I ride this bike mostly on bike paths, some single track, the shocks need to go if you do anything more then jumping 2 foot drops. Over all though this bike rocks, its solid, no problems at all (except the acera :( derailurs, and for people who want a good all round bike this one is great.

Date Reviewed: June 1, 2004
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $320.00
Purchased At:Bethlehem Bikeline
Strengths:Cheap starter bike
Weaknesses:Components need upgraded. Bike is very noisy.
Bike Setup:Stock
Bottom Line:The bike serves well as a starter bike for a casual mountain bike rider. Components definitely need upgraded before doing any serious off-road mountain biking. In the year I rode the bike I manage to replace the pedals, entire crank assembly and bottom bracket, handlebars, and a couple of axles due to the extreme trails ridden and abuse the bike endured (i.e. jumping of entire sets of stairs). Other than that, I plan to upgrade to a Made in the USA GF, but still keep the Trek as my beater bike.

Strengths:The frame is light and parts are good quality for the price.
Weaknesses:The pedals are a bit weak and need to be replaced.
Similar Products Used:Giant ATK 880.
Bike Setup:Stock bike setup, pyramid am/fm radio headlight, tri color uv tireflys.
Bottom Line:This bike is good for weekend warriors and people who are going to use this bike around town. This is a recreational bike. If you are going to be taking this hard core off roading or downhilling don't buy it. I have straightened the rims on this bike 3 times this month already. I have been using this bike for jumping and some tricks. For the price it holds up well and the front fork takes abuse nicely. This is a good starter bike or casual rider. This is not a good bike for someone who will be a hard core trail rider.

Strengths:Value. Has been reliable for the three months i have had it. A good frame with components you can upgrade. Black paintjob gives me a Johnny Cash feel.
Weaknesses:Pedals needed immediate upgrading. Drivetrain is 7speed. Hubs are not upgradeable to disc.

Bottom Line:My last bike was stolen and I wasn't really ready to lay down alot of money on a new one. I bought this, and I have been very happy. I ride three or four times a week, singletrack for over an hour for excercise. I weigh 220lbs and I haven't had any problems on this bike (the fork hasn't died on me, which I worried about at first).

Weaknesses:none depending on what you use it for
Similar Products Used:Ironhorse bikes, several models
Bottom Line:For an "average" biker like myself who likes to meander on and off road without jumping off of cliffs, bouncing off boulders, and just trying to stay in shape and enjoy the outdoors, this bike is a steal. It's fun to ride, feels very solid but comfortable on and off road, and looks great. It almost rides itself. Ten years ago I was an image conscious "bells and whistles" guy, but now that I've grown older and wiser I value something that simply serves its purpose well. This bike hits the spot.

Brakes while generic work well. Tires are 2.0 but seem on the skinny side. overall this bike feels light and responsive. a good bike for a mix of street and trail though I would not do any serious jumps on it.Its aimed a a specific market and
