    Date Reviewed: October 31, 2008
    Favorite Trail:Phoenix Mountain Preserve
    Duration Product Used:3 months
    Price Paid: $350.00
    Purchased At:Landis Cyclery
Strengths:Taken some abuse on some tough terrain. Light bike that shifts easily. Good bike to start with.
Weaknesses:Rear wheel keeps needing to be trued up. Shifting on the fly can be a chore. Rear derailer acts funny sometimes. Front acts funny going from 2nd to 1st, also.
    Bike Setup:Pretty much stock.
Bottom Line:Love this bike. It has done pretty much everything I have asked of it. For a hardtail it climbs and takes bumpy trails real well. Might eventually move up, but will get plenty of good use out of this bike.

    Favorite Trail:N/A
    Duration Product Used:1 Year
    Price Paid: $350.00
    Purchased At:Shipped from Zane's
Strengths:The frame on this bike is pretty much undestroyable and anyone would tell you that. Made out of aluminium, it is pretty light and has a pretty good riding balance and is pretty stable at high speeds (40+MPH).The other parts on the bike don't tell the same story
Weaknesses:The tires, gears, forks, crank arm, pedals, rims was not the best product trek could have installed on the bike. The tires are very slippery when the get wet and you can feel them slip in when cornering on roads. About after 275-300 miles, I began to get a mild ghost shifting problem and at around 900-1000 miles, it'll just ghost shift around 2nd and 3rd for the rail derailaur when climbing which is an annoying problem. Also, I now have the problem of the front derailuar not shifting to 1 unless it's it's coasting which can be a problem also. The forks on the bike has a very short travel and is really not the bike you would want to use for any intense riding. Also at about 1,100, the crankarm for the left side just fell off. On closer inspection, it has seemed that the mount had been rounded from aggresive riding or lousy build quality. This I guess isn't really Trek's fault but that is a flaw. The plastic pedal for the bike is just not for the bike and I advising buying a metal pedal for the bike. I am an agressive rider and running over stuff and all the rim on the rear wheel has already developed three dents which now hampers with the operation of the brakes. I'm planning to get a more durable rim but this bike really is just an entry bike as it's listed and other than the frame, isn't designed for any intense riding.
Similar Products Used:Specialized HardRock 01, Specialized HardRock XC, Specialized Big Hit FSR II
Bike Setup:Sorry but I don't for allthe names of the parts on me.
Metal Pedals, WTB MTB seat, rear mud fender, cyclocomputer
Planning to replace tires, rims, forks, and get a front wheel disc brake.
Bottom Line:The bottom line is it depends on what type of terrain you will be riding alot of the time. If you want to use a bike for casual traveling and occasional trail riding this is the bike to get. It is very stable at speeds even over 40 MPH and does not perform that badly on the trails under than the ground clearance with the front derailuar. The frame on this bike is literally indestructable so if you could just replace all the lousy equipment on the bike and custom build your own killer bike. For the price of the bike, this is the perfect bike for an entry-level mountain biker or the casual biker that does a little of everything. Also, this bike is pretty good for aggressive road riding but cornering on wet pavement and slippery surfaces might prove a problem. I would recommend this bike for someone that isn't so crazy about mountain biking but does some trails.

    Strengths:None
    Weaknesses:poor construction
Bottom Line:Buy a Trek 3700 and take your life in your hands a very poorly built bike. My son bought one and the chain fell off causing severe injuries. He was laid up for two months with a broken shoulder and lacerations and still has no feeling in his hip. I cannot reccomed thid bike toanyone.

    Strengths:Good around town bike
Weaknesses:This is not a real mountian bike. The components will not hold up to actual trail riding.
    Bike Setup:Stock
Bottom Line:If you are looking for a flatland or comuter bike this is good for the money. If you take this thing on any serious singletrack rides you will bend wheels and what not very quickly.

    Duration Product Used:2 Years
    Price Paid: $350.00
    Purchased At:Bicycles East
Weaknesses:Broke the pedals is 1.5 years
New Pedals broke the crank, so had to replace them
Bottom Line:Overall i like the bike. The front shock is nice and the gear shifters are nice. Recently i have been having some trouble with the derailer. And the above weaknesses are completely understandable. I have been very abusive to the bike, riding in the mud and rain, jumping off ledges higher than probably recommended, and skidding to a stop at every opportunity. I'm looking for full suspension now because this bike just isn't if used for not to rugged trails and not abused too much, its a very good bike for the price.

    Favorite Trail:none really...
    Duration Product Used:1 Year
    Price Paid: $300.00
    Purchased At:forgot name
Strengths:Price, durability, looks (why not?), value for price, no need for any repairs after being used for over a year.
Weaknesses:brakes could be better, some people i know have had problems with shifting down, but i haven't really noticed any problems myself, pedals are kinda annoying but i havent had any real trouble
    Similar Products Used:generic wal-mart crap
Bike Setup:No major changes made by me, slightly customized from shop
Bottom Line:the price of this bike makes it perfect for a beginner that doesnt trust a cheap bike from wal-mart. i have used this bike for over a year now and had not had to bring it in for repairs at all. no major (or minor for that matter) problems at all for the whole year. the frame has no damage and the bike still shifts like new.
friends have complained about shifting down when trying the bike but i have not noticed anything out of the ordinary myself. (probably just jealous my bike has lasted so long)

overall a great, durable bike that is well worth the price.

    Duration Product Used:2 Years
    Price Paid: $490.00
Purchased At:Terre Haute Cycling and Fitness
    Strengths:looked good
Weaknesses:holy crap! weak frame, bad derailleurs, brakes, freewheel, crank, fork...
Similar Products Used:nothing this crappy except walmart bikes
Bike Setup:stock except new rims and kenda tires
Bottom Line:uh... crap. i got the 07 model. got ripped royally by the lbs. since the start the shifting was real screwy. lbs (terre haute cycling and fitness) said it was the rear derailleur. another lbs (FAT BIKES)told me it was the derailleur hanger and dropdown. both were bent when i bought it BRAND NEW STILL SEALED. fat bikes fixed that for free. within first month i blew 8 tire tubes. the stock tires SUCK. 1 puncture happened with a blunt stick in the road. got kenda tires never had another blowout. the shifting is still screwy in the front but without a new crank (both lbs agree to this) it cant be fixed. front fork kept botooming out and sticking a little until recently it jammed and i could not get it to let go. i plan to part the thing out and scrap it because it is not worth it to keep repairing it. i have already spent $180 on parts (rims hubs freewheel chain brakes tires etc.)and im sick of it. i wouldnt recommend this heavy piece of scrap metal to ANYONE. save up and buy a specilized pro level bike or same level of any other brand. trek is way over priced for what you're getting

    Favorite Trail:Fantasy Island (Tucson, AZ)
    Duration Product Used:2 Years
    Price Paid: $330.00
    Purchased At:Broadway Bicycles
    Strengths:solid bike, great value
Weaknesses:Rear derailleur, fork (for anything serious)
    Similar Products Used:Gary Fisher Marlin
    Bike Setup:Stock + Panaracer tires
Bottom Line:I bought this when I decided to get into mountain biking. I was not sure if I would like riding, so I went entry level. I loved it!! I started by getting in shape on a bike trail in Tucson and then spent a bunch of time at Fantasy Island (pretty flat and fast). After 2 years I realized I was out growing it... the rear derailleur was having some problems shifting and the forks were not soaking up the bumps well enough as I got faster. Then I moved to Longmont, CO and started hitting trails with more elevation gain and rocks, and it was definitely time to upgrade. Decided to put the money into a new bike instead of components.

    Duration Product Used:1 Year
    Price Paid: $350.00
    Purchased At:Sunshine Bikes, Marin
Strengths:Cheap, strong, matte black paint scheme looks great, comfortable.
    Weaknesses:Front suspension, front derailleur
    Similar Products Used:None
Bike Setup:Stock, except for a pump
Bottom Line:This bike is definitely a good choice for those of us who love mountain biking and want a good strong bike without shelling out the big bucks. However, it's not flawless. It's comfortable to ride, but the front suspension seems to only travel about a third of its maximum, and my front derailleur didn't work properly for months after I bought it, shifting only down to the smaller chainring and not shifting back up. Despite its flaws, the bike is strong, fun to ride, and feels like it could take a moderate beating (well, not the suspension, but the frame does). Overall, get it if you are just stepping into mountain biking, but check your components before you hit the trail. For the price, it does the job great.

Strengths:Bang for your buck. Stock tires and crank are great. Solid, light frame.
    Weaknesses:Front shock. Brakes.
    Similar Products Used:Specialized Hardrock.
Bike Setup:All stock except for swapped the SC Suntour front shock for an RST.
Bottom Line:Bottom line is this bike is fantastic for what it is. A cheap, entry level, all around mountain bike. I primarily ride on the streets with my kids and wife. But about once a week do hit one of the area trails in town. I did bend the rear deraileur once but that was my fault. I'd recommend this bike to anyone wanting an all around good ride without spending a fortune.

    Purchased At:Plaines Bike, Ski, Snowboard,
    Strengths:Strong frame, strong paint
Weaknesses:Handle bars, Front fork (RST 191?), stock derailers suck, bars bend easily, seat, WHEELS!
Bike Setup:Tektro Disc brakes, RockShox Tora, Jamis 7 degree stem, Easton carbon flat bar, Shimano deore derailers, WTB Moto Raptors
Bottom Line:IT was a good bike when i first got it, but after a month of wear and tear i had to replace a lot of the parts. If anybody buys this bike for off road use make sure you get a new fork and derailers. Fell on gravel trails and no visible scratches )there probally are but the matte paint dosen't make them stick out).

Its nice to have a decent aluminum frame at that price. Brakes are also strong and lasting. Needs tuning occationally. Fork okay for cx or commuting, but consider upgrading.

The WSD (women specific design) option was a good made this a good first bike for my wife. She really enjoys it a bunch. It is a little heavy but really not that bad- removing the kick stand lightens the load.

Strengths:A very good bike for the money and for begginers and people who arnt really sure if they will like bikeing or not. Excelent for the towpath and simple trails and a preaty good bike on the road.
Weaknesses:Not very good for jumping. After a while the rims start to bend crank will start to bend. pedals, grips, tires, tubes got 6 flat tires in one day axles, i snaped 2 of them with in a 1 year period, brakes when they get wet its like not haveing any at all
Similar Products Used:k mart blue light specils
Bike Setup:everything is stock except for the pedals the are welgos the brake pads are MTB and the tubs are a much thiker tub than the stock
Bottom Line:A great beginer bike will usually put up with a lot of abuse untill it comes to the jumping and some mud us ok but if you are running down hills and flying through creeks then you eather need to get a bike with disk brakes up grade the system. But if you are looking for a bike to ride on simple trails and the towpath than this is a bike for you. But if your skill level is up their and you hit jumps and go through mud and water than get a better bike.

Bottom Line:Great bike. used it at the trails all my life and made lots of upgrades to it. of course took off the pedals first day and replaced the grips first day as well. gradually made upgrades then went to singlespeed before upgrading the drivetrain. buy this bike if you are looking for a good bike to mess around with. stock rst fork is better than you might think considering its got 70 mm travel. good fork soaks up bumps and such. the brakes will do until you get an upgrade. the singlespeed has really lightened the bike up a lot. used to be a tank, but now it is really pretty light. running 34/18 gearing and that works great.
