Strengths:
Overall sturdy build quality.
Front fork and handlebar assembly is excellent, improving handling.
Weaknesses:
Front disk is too large and vibrates as a result. Replacement required for defect. Also rear tyre can rub on frame on impacts. Such is because theres limited movement allowance between frame and tyre.

Bottom Line:
Great value.
Great for beginners and enthusiasts alike.
Gets you through any trail. Its simplicity and reliability make it, in some ways better than specialist bikes, which have more parts to malfunction.

Bottom Line:
If you have $1200 (£600) to spend on a bike, get a previous year but brand new kona stuff, they are much better value for money, altogether this bike has cost me over £750 ($1500) and you could buy a brand new kona/specialized/DMR for that price!! Strengths:
Solid ride, easy to handle. Double wall rims from the start that I have yet to bend...in other words land properly there yoohoos, feels like a bigger BMX
Weaknesses:
rear derailler, can't stay seated in one gear, it hops areound the rear cassette, Alivio = poo, replaced with a Hone. Saggy front shock, no problem though, go fastrer on your drops and land on a downslope instead of flat ground...that should help out with the impact. besides, faster is more fun
Similar Products Used:
Mongoose Exile (killed it), Kona stinky (killed it), Cannondale Jekyl, killed that one too.
Bike Setup:
new derailler and hanger, nothing else.
Bottom Line:
800+ dollars, not bad. going from a top of the line DH you will notice the component difference in performance, but then again I did not spend 3 grand on the bike either. Pretty good choice for an all around attack vehicle. You can do just enough on the bike confidently enough to cause decent injury, but not so advanced in one area that it leaves other riding styles out. The only reason for the 3 peppers is replacing the parts as they go away. If you have more money and want to get serious, buy a no sh^t hardcore bike, if yuo can't afford the high dollar rich boy toy, get this one, get a feel for the components and go with it. Just remember, you will never be completely satisfied with a stock-box bike.

Weaknesses:
Flimsy derailleur, have had to take it apart twice already after a mediocre bail. Front Forks feel like they're gonna pop, not enough manual adjustment on the compression, come on dudes, give me some stiff, feels like i'm gonna go right through the ground on a drop.

The Manitou Slate fork. It is a pieces of S#%*!!! I took a 4ft drop and I blew the F@#$%^ apart. The first time out. If you look on the fork it says for XC use only. Why in hell Trek put it on a DJ/Freeride bike is beyond my scope of knowledge. I am upgrading to a beefier fork soon. Manitou didn't want to touch it and Trek could care less about the situation. I will never buy another Trek again.

Frame, definitely! (What a sweet job Cam did!) It's bulky and though pretty light for what chunks of alu Trek used. Thank God it doesn't have a integrated headset! Cool ISCG! Nice & classy components (stem, post, cranks, grips) and good specs for the price (brakes, wheels, pedals). Not elegant, but functional brake & shifer levers.
Weaknesses:
Not so cool as Kona's marketed to wannabees looking at NWD, though... The downside is that you get less image, more product, considering that is a downside! It's shorter than expected, and the catalog doesn't let you know the Jack 3 is longer than the 2 & the 1. The stock fork pretty much sucks, but then again, what do you expect from a Manitou, particularly in this price range? The tires are treacherous; they look like "mountain" tires, but are, in fact, dirt tires. No grip on the trail, but nice and light on the trailS (dirtjumping, that is...). The saddle is a matter of taste and the handlebar is plain stupid! (Throw a Hussefelt or a Big Earl on and there you go!) Instead of Alivio & 11-34, Sora & 11-23 woulld be way better... No chainguide.
Similar Products Used:
Santa Cruz Chameleon (stolen, sniff!),Nicolai BMXTB, Haro DSR, most Konas (the Cowan is okay...), first GT Ruckus, Mongoose NX 7.7 (light & sweet), Mongoose Fireball, Specialized P3, Author A-Gang AM & PM, RAM URBN, RAM 4X, all our "local" Polar-X's, all crappy UMF Meridas (burn 'em!), etc.
Bike Setup:
15" Jack 2, Fox TALAS RL, King NoThreadSet, Earl stem, Big Earl handlebar, seatpost & seat, ISIS 175 mm Hussefelt, ISCG Boxguide (for the moment...), Wellgo sealed-bearing pedals, '95 shortcage XTR with Ultegra 11-23 cogset, SRAM PC69 chain & SRAM X.9 trigger shifter, Hayes MX2 (unbelieveable performance at ridiculous price!) with Avid FR5 levers (same as Hayes), white powdercoated Mavic D521 with red Hope XC Titanium hubs and Sapim Leader 2.0 spokes, various tires (common set-up: 2.4 Holy Roller / 2.4 Earl for street/dirt & 2.35 singleply Larsen TT / 2.35 singleply High Roller for the woods)
Bottom Line:
Trek did a hell of good job; so good that I couldn't initially believe it! (Trek isn't a "cool" "freeride" company, now is it?) I believe these bikes deserve much more attention from the public, I'm actually feeling sorry for Trek because of this... They lack image. They changed NOTHING for 2007 either, which is pretty weird. Maybe they still have a big stock of them from '06, or I don't know... Anyhow, I am getting a brandnew Jack 3 frame and I can't wait for it to arrive! (Oh, I'm also sure the Gary Fisher dirt hardtails must be pretty good, but boy are they ugly!) Anyhow, go buy PRODUCT, not IMAGE and quit watching Disorder; it messes with your brain and it ain't even that good... Ride more dirt, less internet! Peace out!
P.S.: Only stupid people break frames... Ssshhh!
