Submitted by scandinaviansystem a Downhiller from kalundborg, denmark
Date Reviewed: June 5, 2008
Favorite Trail:kalundborg skatepark
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $450.00
Purchased At:cykelperronen, slage
Strengths:easy to adjust to personal needs..
all parts(besides the tank-frame) are grinded after constant use for 2½ years, after that you can customize the bike as you want and still keep the respect for the brainacs at trek.(wich is where i am with the bike right now)
Weaknesses:the aliviogear is a bit hard to sprayclean compared to the scram gear´s...
the fork is a big dull compared to the bike but its great in a skatepark(where i ride mostly)
last but NOT LEAST!!!
THIS IS A WARNING!!! YOU BRAKE YOUR BODY ON THIS BIKE!!!! YOUR GETTING DESTROYED!!
when i ride it i know that this bike can deal with anything logic on a trail.. but the human body cant, i have a list of damages for further readin..
Similar Products Used:some old "BH Top line"
trek 4300/6700/6900
trek bruiser 1
some random ghostframe..
random bikes random bikes! lol
Bike Setup:bigger crowbar
v-brakes instead of frondisc
Bottom Line:used this bike ALOT!!
my thumb cant bend, my right knee hurts when its cold, my elbows have eyes but, my shoulder is getting better, it dosent click anymore! :)
there is a reason for why this bike is called bruiser, no safety atall, compared to what the bike can handle..
if you ever get a frame to this bike, BUY IT!!
the alivio gears from shimano could be better but its cheap to repair or even upgrade..
rest of the bike is awesome!!

Submitted by Geoff Jensen a Weekend Warrior from Pullman, WA, USA
Date Reviewed: September 30, 2006
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $430.00
Purchased At:B&L Bicycles
Strengths:Inexpensive! Lightweight, long travel (close to 5"), excellent brakes (8"front disc 6" rear), solid frame, very quick bike, some very good componentry, good maneuverability.
Weaknesses:A bit noisy, very low top speed (but it gets up to the top speed very quickly), almost a bit too squirrely at top speed.
Similar Products Used:'03 Specialized Big-Hit, 8" front & rear, race modified.
Bike Setup:XT rear derailer, XTR 8spd shifters, Avid 1.0 brake levers, Thudbuster LT suspension seatpost, Avid Rollamajig.
Bottom Line:Wow, this bike is a STEAL at this price. The specs say it has 125mm travel, to be realistic I would say it has at MOST 120mm (which is still a lot).

I would reccomend this bike to ANYone looking to get into trials, jumping, or freeride/downhill. The brakes are EXCELLENT, they work as well as my old Hayes Nine hydros.

After a few weeks of riding the cranks began creaking something awful. Took it back in and had them tightened up, haven't had a problem since.

The front brake is giving me grief, it won't stay centered and rubs quite often. We had to hone in the screw holes o nthe front fork to get it to sit right, and it still isn't quite right.

Derailers are cheap, and I don't like the feel of the shifters. Plus, the shifters can only shift up 3 gears at a time, versus my XTR's which can shift up 4 at a time. But all in all, performs better than expected at this price range.

I personally don't like the feel of this bike. It is just a wee bit too squirrely at top speed. However, this is not the fault of Trek or the bike's geometry, it is my personal taste. My first two bikes were Gary Fisher Genesis Geometry, which I learned all of my balance points and riding techniques on. Thus, this bike has more standard geometry and I am not used to it. I have gone back to the Fisher Geometry and am selling this bike, only due to personal taste. If I wasn't spoiled rotten by Genesis, I would be riding this bike every day.

Highly reccomended buy, especially if you're just getting into the more extreme riding styles.

Strengths:this bike can handle a lotta hits....i have hit some 10 footers to not such nice landings and it handled it..nothing broke except the forks and its been a year
Weaknesses:ive been through 2 forks and i just got some sherman flick plus and they are sweet,,,,other than the fork this bike will manhandle anything pretty much under 12 feet or so..if you hop hard on the pedals the frame squishes down maybe a quarter inch....just flex..which is good most of the time because it gives a little when you hit the big stuff
Similar Products Used:scrap, shred, cowan, stuff, cannondale chase 1
Bike Setup:completly modified bruiser 2
Bottom Line:this is a sick bike and i would recomend it to anyone that goes out to have fun and doesnt have to have the record air or be a pro..like i said this will handle pretty big drops but i dont recomend it if you are gonna constantly take hits from 15 feet or more..to much flex in the frame

Bottom Line:Great Bike. No problems yet and I have taken it on a few falls. Shocks can be adjusted, but doesn't really help that much. Only two gears in front so not great for long rides or racing. Rims are really strong. Has great response and takes a beating. Great bike for the price.

Bottom Line:great value for money- no better bike for £350 anywhere- better than a gt chucker spec wise- forks a bit on the soft side for dirt jumping- maybe upgrade to marchozzi dj's. Great for people who wantto go on a bike ride and dirt jump in the middle. Takes a lot of hammer. I have had considerable pleasure out of this bike every time I go out- a pleasure to ride.

Strengths:Very strong and durable bicycle. Relatively light for its size and price. Nothing else out there is remotely this affordable for the quality of parts and durabilty. I'm a former BMXer who wanted to move into a geared mountain bike that's still aggressive enough. This bike has suited me well for riding in town to work or beating it on the trails on the weekend. Very nice and worth every penny.
Weaknesses:The seat is a little uncomfortable at first and the gears could probably use an upgrade.
Similar Products Used:Kona Fire Mountain, Giant somethin'
Bike Setup:I've still got this bad boy stock and figured i would replace items as needed. The only thing I've gone through so far is the chain and tires.
Bottom Line:Awesome bike. Not just for the price but all together. A real bargain. It's only a shame that Trek stopped making them. Really too bad. But if you can get one used, do it.
