I think it's a great entry level MTB and even a bit more. I always said that I wouldn't get a new frame till I broke this one but it never broke. I road that bike hard and it kept on going. I even started racing on it.

My selection criteria were for the bike to have a solid frame, reasonable component mix but most importantly, I wanted a bike, that would not appear desirable to a thief.
I am a secret STEEL lover (even though my race machine is an S-WORKS FSR-XC!) and when I saw the 950, I knew I had to have it. Unfortunately, it looks beautiful so one of my criteria has not been realised! I still think that because the bike appears so retro, (rigid fork, rim brakes, flat pedals) perhaps it would not be as desirable as an aluminium disk braked SPD'd machine.
Anyway how does it ride? My bike is not heavy, so off-the-mark sprints happen easily and handling through twisty singeltrack is a breeze. It also climbs exceptionally well. It was with significant trepidation that I took the bike down some rocky garden trail, and it handled it well. The rigid fork is reasonably hard on the upper body, but it never gets painful and you never feel that you're losing control. I use this bike to pull my daughter (in a bike trailer) on Sunday morning rides and it handles the pavement and the extra stress with notably well.
I believe rigid mountain bikes make you a better rider. Without the suspension fork or rear shock to help you, you are forced to choose better lines when climbing, better routes when descending quickly and you have to be more in touch with your own balance, limits and the bike itself.

The bike is way strong, yet forgiving too. More flex than aluminum. It climbs up these loose rocky hills great (as long as my legs hold out!). And the descents are even more fun. I can't tell you how much I love this bike!
I have ridden the crap out of this bike, and it just keeps coming back for more. I have wrecked, flipped, endo'ed, and crashed (it's even thrown me off and jumped on me a couple of times, too) but it is none the worse for wear. The trails around here are rough and rocky, yet the bike has held up Excellent.... many other bikes would have fallen apart by now.
I have just bought another, newer bike (wanted a lighter one -w- suspension), but there is no way I'm getting rid of this one! I'll probably upgrade a little at a time.
I can't recommend this bike enough if you are looking for a solid, bullet-proof ride. If you can find one, GET IT!

I have ridden it for 4 years with no problems. The frame is strong and fairly light for a chromoly frame built 5 years ago. It still shifts great and the brakes have had no problems. I put on a Judy XC for and riser bars in '99. I will probably put V Brakes on it eventually b/c I can't stand cantilevers (but that is all they made back then).
I just bought a Rocky Mtn Element Limited Edition Race this year but I definitely am going to keep my Trek around just in case.

Just this summer I was riding down Porc rim in awe at how much abuse this bike will still put up with. As for adding shocks to the bike (Dom..), I didn't have any trouble with geometry (19), although I had to upgrade headset and stem to accept threadless. It was worth the couple of bucks though.

Custom singlespeed setup w/ 98' Judy XC w/ air cartridges | | Bottom Line: | I beat the heck out of by bike, aggressinely riding ~4x's a week. I've replaced everything (literally) on this bike, and I've grown to love the frame...the only original component left...if you can call it that. The other day, I managed to snap the toptube from the headtube at the weld. SCARY ride home it was. I wonder how TREK will warranty this...if they do. I don't think they make these steel frames anymore...I loved the way I could see it bend and flex as I climbed.. It made me feel strong or something.
