Favorite Trail:mnt ashland descent into tooth pick
    Duration Product Used:2 Years
    Price Paid: $280.00
    Purchased At:get-n-gear ashland used
Strengths:carbon/ aluminum frame looked cool and is light
Weaknesses:when I got it it had halston design shox and grip shifters yuck to both!! halston shox have about 1 in or less movement and are heavy and gripshifters just plane suck
Similar Products Used:miele, trek 8000, stump jumper, schwine,
Bike Setup:as soon as I got it I put mavic rims w/deore lx rear and phill woods sealed front hubs deore rapid fires, deore lx cranks, avid/tektro mt10 v brakes deore xt bb apecialized tires and just recently put marzocchi bombers and an avid jucy-7 160mm front disc brake and built a wtb rim w/ deore xt hub 14g 32h 3cross and a ritchy tire.
Bottom Line:first day with the new brakes and new tire, remember the halston shocks? well they didnt fit the geometry too well for this frame the frame was nice and light but was too flexable in the bb which made it rub the chain rings on both sides of the deraullar when under a load, and yes I had it set up right I am a pro mtb tech, there was a small indentation in the bottom of the down tube about a 1/10 of an inch deep from the halston shock caps rubbing when occasionally oversteered which happens when you go around a tight corner and the bike doesnt. I rode it this way for two years and the first time I got hard into the new brakes the frame snapped like george bush on acid!! over all I really liked the frame and the halston shocks were just like haveing solid chromo forks. great frame for bike path and fire road enthusiasts, but dont let a small scratch in the carbon get away from you

    Price Paid: $550.00
    Purchased At:EBAY
Strengths:THIS IS A VERY NICE BIKE FOR THE MONEY, I ALSO HAVE A CANNONDALE F500 AND THE 8300 IS IN A WHOLE DIFFERENT BALL PARK. I WOULD RECCOMEND THIS BIKE TO ANYONE WHO IS LOOKING FOR A LIGHTWEIGHT XC RACING BIKE. THE PARTS INCLUDE A MANTANU SX FORK WITH XTR REAR AND XT FRONT WITH XT RAPID FIRE SHIFTERS.IT ALSO HAS A REAR DISC BRAKE MOUNT WHICH IS NICE IF YOU WANT TO GO DISC. FALWLESS BIKE INDEED
Weaknesses:THIS ISNT THE BIKE FOR YOU IF YOUR A FREERIDING CRAZY LUNATIC WHO GOES OFF 10 FOOT DROPS IN THERE SPARE TIME. THE FRONT WHELL IS LACED WITH NO CROSS SO IF YOU WANT TO FREERIDE OR DOWNHILL LOOK ELSEWARE OR FIND NEW WHEELS
    Similar Products Used:SPECIALIZED STUMPJUMPER.
Bike Setup:XT FRONT, XT RAIPID FIRE, AVID 2.0 LEVERS AND BRAKES, XTR REAR, LX HUBS W/ BONTRAGER MUSTANG RIMS, BONTRAGER SADDLE, ICON SEATPOST STEM AND RISER BAR AND LX CRANK

    Date Reviewed: September 11, 1998
    Bottom Line:
This is a great bike. The Alpha SL frame is light as a feather and just stiff enough to ride out the roots, bumps and rocks. I used to ride a Giant Rincon SE, this thing doesn't even compare. The Trek 8300 SL comes with single digit Avid V-Brakes, LX Crankset, XT Rapid Fire shifter, XTR Rear Derailler, XT front Derailler and Mounitou SX Front_Shock. This bike is great, the frame is a keeper and only a couple of the components would I ever consider upgrading. I paid just under $1000 (US) for this bike and it was well worth it. Once you've been riding for about a year and are sure this sports for you, make a jump to the 8300, you'll understand what I mean.
