Favorite Trail:The Ewok Forest
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $120.00
Purchased At:Police Auction
Strengths:The Alpha ZX frame
Weaknesses:Stock RockShox
Deore rapid fire shifters... hate em.
Similar Products Used:None
Bike Setup:Present: 1 by 7 drive with Manitou Mars Elite susp, Truvativ Fire X cranks and bb, and Shimano V brakes. Stem, bars, and seatpost are are still stock Bontrager but will be getting replaced with lighter parts.
Bottom Line:I purchased this bike with a grievously worn drivetrain but the bike was otherwise in excellent shape.

After replacing the drivetrain I rode this bike 2000 km over roads, trail, and singletrack and after a brief stint as a singlespeed and my winter bike she's now a much lighter bike with a 1 by 7 drive and a new Manitour Mars Elite front fork.

The Deore rapid fires were replaced with a Deore thumbie and I'm running Specialized Team series tires.

This bike kicks some serious ass on the trails and singletrack and since I paid so little for it my bang for the buck factor is high and I have to give the bike 5 flaming ones for delivering such solid performance over so many 1000's of km.

I'm still waiting for those Truvativ cranks and bb to buy the farm but they're still going strong.

Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $740.00
Purchased At:Wamsley's Cycles <--- The GREATEST bike shop on earth
Strengths:Everything. Great "entry-level" bike.
Weaknesses:Rear derailure needs adjusting after every couple of hard rides. Rear cassette came loose after.... 2+ YEARS of aggressive riding. Stock pedals suck (never liked toe-clips) and Judy C fork is not so great.
Bike Setup:Trek 6700 with Shimano m540 pedals, Specialized Pro saddle (NICE)
Bottom Line:GREAT bike! After 4 years it's still my favorite hard-tail ride. I've had to upgrade a few things over the years, but it's held up extremely well to the beatings I give it.

Weaknesses:Frame warranty,
Similar Products Used:Trek 4900, 8000
Bike Setup:Stock
Bottom Line:This bike was pretty good overall, it was my first good quality mountainbike from a good shop.

Trouble with it is, my bike was stored overnight in my garage and evidently there was water in the frame, which caused the right rear tube to burst. Thats $800 out the window, Trek refuses to do anything at all for me. says its a maintenance issue.

If you have one of these make sure you store it in a heated garage or try to empty the water out of the frame everynight. Because Trek will not cover it. I was surprised because I thought this frame was guaranteed for life. Not Cool

Purchased At:City Bicycle Works- This Shop Sucks!! Don't Go There!!
Strengths:Avid disc brakes, Bontrager components, Trek quality
Weaknesses:Judy C fork- flexes alot when braking hard and is just plain cheap
Similar Products Used:Trek 4500
Bike Setup:Stock with Avid discs, upgraded brake levers to Avid SD-5's
Bottom Line:Overall this is great bike for the average XC hardtail rider. Decent components for the $, the exception being the Judy fork. I have ridden the bike for over a year and the only problem I have had is the springs in the fork broke, and those were replaced under warranty. I would definitely recommend this bike to anyone looking for a sweet ride that will last. Five Flamin Chilis all around!
If your looking for a good LBS in the Sacramento area go to Bicycles Plus in Folsom.

Favorite Trail:anywhere on Peavine Mt - Reno Nevada
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $800.00
Purchased At:Park Ave Bikes - Rochester
Strengths:Light frame, excellent geometry, good components, lots of room for upgradability... and that matte black finish.. no stickers.. mmmm
Weaknesses:Tires are a bit passive, just ordered a Panaracer Fire XP pro for the rear, pedals needed to go (toeclips and SPDs be damned, i need big fat platform peds!), judy c seems a bit soupy, though i need to learn to adjust it more or try other forks to see if i should change.
Similar Products Used:850, Rockhopper
Bike Setup:only Sun Ringle Zu Zu peddles for added control no matter what shoes i wear (no barefoot tho! ouch!), a big old long generic seatpost to make it commuting worthy, and a rear Panaracer Fire XP pro to stop the slipping when climbing desert trails, maybe i will save for a nice pair of hydraulic discs, and a firmer front fork.. one can always dream
Bottom Line:I love this bike, it replaced my low end 850 (also a rock solid bike). I am always amazed at its fit to my size (i got a 16" bike and i am about 6 ft!), i can manipulate it underneath me like an extension. Lots of fun in general urban use (its a "sport utility vehicle", part commuting, part singletrack, part stupid bike trick fun), great fun on singletracks (i am visiting my sister in Reno Nevada, having a ball on Peavine mt!). The downhiller pedals are so much more versatile than spds or oldfashioned toeclippiethingies, i can use them with work boots in the winter, sneakers in the summer, and can hop higher than most of my SPD laden friends (of course thats just cause i got technique :) ... If the bike fits your size and you like the way it feels, get it!

Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $950.00
Purchased At:Treknology
Strengths:Strong frame. Rims are great although spoke count is low.
Everything takes the abuse. Colour is nice. Even nicer after removing some stickers.
Weaknesses:Seatpost too short. Rear hub came loose often. Saddle sucks big time. Pedals gave up after 2 and a half week of riding.
Stock chain got rusty easily. Bottom bracket crushed after 4 months. Judy C fork sucks big time. The pre-load adjuster failed me after 3 weeks. Didn't adjust it much but can't be turned now. basically the fork is busted. Paintwork chipped easily. Headset got rusty after 5 months.
Similar Products Used:Muddyfox, GT.
Bike Setup:Had both derailleurs replaced to XTR, a flat handle bar suits me better. XT V-brakes and bottom bracket. SRAM rocket grip shift, Avid Ti brake levers, Body Geometry saddle, thomson elite seatpost, Azonic Shorty stem, Specialized tires, XT cogset and new Bontrager Race crankset. Got rid of most stickers and self re-printed some new stickers which look way better.
Bottom Line:The overall is great, the bike took all the abuse that i gave it. Wheels were only re-trued after 2 and a half months of riding and crashing the bike. The middle chain ring got bent for no reasons. the bike is maintainence low. except for the rear hub that i need to service after every couple of months. If you want a good bike which can last, get this bike.

Strengths:UPDATE TO PREVIOUS REVIEW: Still working great after one year of use, but a few things broke (see below)
Weaknesses:1. The Deore front derailleur developed into a constant annoyance. Had to be adjusted every other week. Had it exchanged for an LX one - that works as it ought.
2. The Judy C fork really didn't cut it. It developed so much play when braking (and felt so spongy) that I went for a Marzocchi Z 2 when I got a good offer. This is a new world!
Bike Setup:As bought, except for the fork (Z2), the front derailleur (LX), the brakes (XT levers/Avid V-Brakes) and the tyres (Continental Vertical Pro)
Bottom Line:A bike that holds up very well, feels reliable and just works without much maintenance. Looks even better since I removed most stickers (really all black now). The Z 2 fork is a dream...

I'm considering switching to Magura HS-33 rim brakes to lower maintenance even further.

All in all, 4 flaming thingies due to a substandard fork. The derailleur probably was just used up.

Strengths:Tough frame and rims. No re-truing of wheels after 3 months of bashings and crashings with the bike. Weight is not really that bad and the matt black colour scheme is cool !!!
Weaknesses:That Judy C fork sucks big time !!! Pre-load adjuster failed after 2 weeks of riding. Bontrager seat's too hard and very uncomfy on long rides (Even short rides). Pedals gave up after a week of riding (aboout 70 km a day)... Seat post is too short. Paint work quality real sucks !! Single layer and no clear coating... X-P. Grips keep coming off the bar and needa to re-glue it twice. the stock tires are great, handles everything even gripping on loose mud...
Bontrager hub came loose after a month and a half of riding...
Similar Products Used:Naahh... This bike's good...

Strengths:The climbing ability is rediculous. My friends automatically step aside when we approach a climb. After shaving a half inch off each side of the handlebars it turns on a dime.
Weaknesses:The fork seems to be fairly loose, but given the climbing performance I don't think this is that big of deal.
Similar Products Used:Gary Fisher Tassajara
Bike Setup:Stock except for the addition of clipless pedals.
Bottom Line:This bike is a great performer for the price. It would be hard to do better if you're on lush, smooth singletrack. My main problem has been a bending middle chainring. I have to bend it back after every ride. I'll admit that I am soon trading my 6700 in for a dual suspension, but that is only because I have come to love trails that a hardtail isn't really built for. If I was going to stick with the 6700 I would replace the tires with a set that hooked up better on the loose stuff that is so easy to find in northern California. My moment of honesty; I thought my superior climbing was mostly me, but reading the other reviews on the 6700 really burst my bubble. :) This bike makes climbing fun, especially when you have a group of friends to pass on the way up. It is also fairly responsive on the descent, but I would suggest cutting the handlebars down a little to increase manueverability, for the uphill and downhill. The change when I did this was unbelievable.

Strengths:frame has some serious ba**s. superstock wheelset is light and fast(even though i am running a set of dolomite discs now). excellent overall value!!!!
Weaknesses:grips tend to fail alot(replaced and reglued 7 times since i bought the bike). no quick release on seatpost. fork is quite flimsy under hard braking w/ or w/out discs(i have lots of fun watching it bend about 14 degrees when braking and i only weigh 160, marzocchi z.2's would be a good replacement before you buy the bike and put miles on it.
Bike Setup:selle italia FLX saddle, dolomite disc wheelset w/ hayes HMX-1 brakes(great brake for the money!!!!!).
Bottom Line:this is a great bike for a cross country rider who has a limited budget but still wants a great bike. don't pay attention to the name "competition" that trek has given it. its also good for people who want a "pro" class bike. i have ridden through 3' of mud and thrown it in rivers and watched it drift downstream(no joke) and it hasen't given me a problem yet. the only setback is the fork. its high maintanance and its extermely flimsy(will be replaced by marzocchi z.1 MCR). the anotomy of the bike is excellent and climbs like a rocket. nice handlebars too. this bike gets nine flamin' chilis thanx to the sucky fork. oh yeah, this is also a great bike to upgrade and modifywith because it has disc brake mounts and stuff like that. great effort was put into it too!

Strengths:Light and sturdy, comfortable saddle, looks great, climbs smooth, shifts smooth. I like the Judy C forks that some others have questioned (though I hadn't tried any other front suspension system before). Solid Bontrager and Shimano components. Great on single track but flexible enough for road riding too. Great bike for the price.
Weaknesses:Loose grips, rubs some in top and bottom gear (despite adjustments), brakes feel soft sometimes but generally work
Similar Products Used:Specialized Rockhopper Comp
Bike Setup:Stock
Bottom Line:Great bike, I fully recommend it to those who are serious but also out to have fun. I'm a longtime distance runner just getting into mountain biking as cross-training, and I tested the Rockhopper and other bikes in the price range (Gary Fischer etc.) and the Trek 6700 was the most comfortable by far. Very durable--I have crashed 6-7 times and ridden it hard 100-150 miles/week since purchase, on roads and single track, and the Trek is holding up well. I'm not an expert gearhead and don't feel I need to be on this bike. For price and performance, you won't be disappointed.

Date Reviewed: August 8, 2001
Duration Product Used:3 months
Strengths:Frame, generally good components, takes a beating. Seat is very comfortable after initial break in of about a week (expect to stand alot prior to break-in)
Weaknesses:Front derailleur is troublesome. It needs constant attention and tends to rub when you're in 1st or 9th gear. It also tends to get stuck between the first and second ring, wrapping the chain up and around them when under load. Let's not forget the chain coming off if you don't time your downhill to uphill transitions perfectly. (works fine on street ride)
Pedals
Needs barends
Seat clamp comes loose alot
Bike Setup:Mostly stock, Shimano 424 pedals, piranha tires. diamondback stubby barends.
Bottom Line:It's a good bike at a good price. I think this is a great bike for a semi-serious weekend warrior up to a novice entry level racer.
The Shimano LX components work well, with exception given to the front derailleur.
I changed the pedals to Shimano 424 clipless(can be used with cleats or with regular shoes), they're much better.
This thing climbs very well. I've been able to go up hills that I see others struggling on. Stock tires don't seem to like dusty, muddy, low traction areas - they just let go. They hook up nice on hard pack.
I'm very happy with this bike.
minus a half a flamin poo for the fr der & another half for the seat clamp.

Other than a few needed upgrades (pedals, fork, seat) this bike is probably the best bang for the buck of any product on the market in its class (intermediate up to beginner racer). If you are looking for a new bike make sure you give this one a nice long test drive. I give this thing 4 chilis for value because of the upgrades needed to make it totally awesome. Weaknesses:Pedals are crap, seat is crap, don't care much for the stock tires either, they don't bite much. I wouldn't say the fork is a weakness, but its just a little on the soft side for me, so I'm going to have mine setup different soon. (I'm 190 lbs)

I bought this bike because I was so impressed with the quality of the trek 820 sport for a sub $250 bike, it is very smooth (I got it for my wife). I decided to give Trek a try. I have to say that I'm VERY impressed so far with this bike. I've taken it on some pretty gnarly trails and had a couple of nice little crashes with it (like over the bars and stuff) and its hardly even been scratched. I'm impressed at how tough the paint on the frame is. I'm also impressed at how after a good tuning, it keeps its true for a long time! Great bike so far, keep wanting to swing a leg over it and hit the trails!

Strengths:solid hand made aluminum frame w/ good componants (although some upgrades in the future). looks slick (matte black). fits and handles well.
Weaknesses:pedals are crap. i smashed one on my first ride, but have since gone clipless anyway (shimano m-545's). sweet! tires are bad for muddy conditions. they pack up with mud and weigh a ton, but new ones are in the mail as we speak (pricepoint). sweet!
Similar Products Used:i tried numerous bikes in and around that price range: giant, kona, devinci, rocky mountain and schwinn.
Bike Setup:stock. except for the shimano m-545 clipless pedals and the soon to be arriving irc xc tires.
Bottom Line:out of the numerous bikes i tried this one just felt right. some of the bikes had slighty better componants, but this one just fit. i immediately felt comfortable on it. being that this is my first mountain bike comfort is king and the parts can always be swapped. the judy c fork feels really good compared to some of the forks on other bikes. the seat, bars and grips make for a comfortable ride. i plan to upgrade the brakes next summer (they work well so far, but feel flimsy) and will probably do the deraillers and cranks once i trash these ones. so far this bike has been good to me, but only time will tell. it didn t drain my bank account and for anyone starting out i would highly recommend that you give this bike a try. however, as with buying anything it is important to go with whatever works for you. as a man of good faith i bestow upon the trek 6700 5 flamin chilis...don t let me down baby.

Purchased At:Jax Bicycles, Long Beach
Strengths:Large, light and rigid frame. Solid fire trail handling. Great seat until my 235 lb. butt crushed it. Good room for a 6'4" rider.
Weaknesses:In the 9 months I've been riding, I've managed to bend the seat rails from riding and snap 2 teeth off the large chainring. Problems early on included a loose rear hub and headset. Once adjusted these were no problem. Drivetrain starts to get a little whacky under climbing load, but swapping out the LX rear derailleur should solve that problem.
Similar Products Used:1989 customized cannondale until some b*&$!@d stole it 10 years ago!
Bike Setup:As I mentioned, I'm tall, so the stock Bontrager seatpost had to go in place of an Easton EA-70. Replaced the seat with a Body Geometry Sport and swapped the pedals for Shimano PD-M535 clipless. Also bought second set of wheels (XT/Mavic 517's, XT 11-34 cassette) for offroad use and put a set of FatBoys and a 105 road cassette on the Bontrager superstock wheels for commuting/ trainer/ road riding use. Added Ritchey barends to keep the nose down on climbs.
Bottom Line:I really missed riding for 10 years and this is my re-entry ride. The frame feels really rigid (I'm riding the 21") and is great for XC and blazing down firetrails. My own limitations keep me from going faster. I was disappointed at first with the loosening rear hub on the stock Bontragers, and the LBS didn't do the repair justice. Fortunately I was a wrench in high school rather than flipping burgers. Doing your own repairs brings about a better sense of satisfaction anyways! The only real drag is the need to set up the bike big for me as it has drawbacks on technical singletrack requiring frequent dismounts and tucks behind the seat. I'd recommend this bike for anyone getting back into riding. It's a keeper, and using the Lego theory, you can always upgrade parts as needed!

Strengths:Stiff, light, tight
Similar Products Used:trek 6000-8000, fisher sugar 2, specialized m4, whatever...others too
Bike Setup:I got this frame as a warranty replacement for my 7000, also a zx frame. I have all the shweet components on it that I could afford...none are stock...Noleen Crosslink fork, bontrager racelite cranks, rolf dolomite wheels, easton ea70 bars-post, kore ti pedals, 8 spd xt/xtr, odi lockjaw grips, michelin wildgripper lite s tires, avid arch rival supreme (speed dial 7).
Bottom Line:Bottom line is that this frame is nicer looking and stiffer than my old 7000. THe geometry suits me well and is a predictable, stiff and able ascender. It is a bit less forgiving on the rutty and beat up single track I usually ride but until I get my paws on a fs itll do just fine. Bottm line is that with my components the 6700 is a tight bike, spec'd to the 9's and competitive with any other bike I ve tried. My bike feels better than the 8000 I used...the frame geometry is nearly identical. Id reccommend swapping out a couple of items that annoy you and then you will have a really nice machine on your hands.

Favorite Trail:Anything I can get lost on!!!
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $950.00
Strengths:Bike came with Avid disc brakes which are sweet!! Frame is fairly light. Nice Bontrager FS2000 seat. Crowbar handlebar is cool. Bike holds up well to mucho abuso.
Weaknesses:Promax Brake levers felt delicate. (Upgraded to Avid speed dial 7's...problem solved.) Stock tires are great in dry conditions but hold mud in wet conditions.
Similar Products Used:Various GT bikes
Bike Setup:Pretty stock except for the brake lever upgrade and Time ATAC clipless pedals.
Bottom Line:I can't say how sweet these Avid Disc Brakes are...especially after they break in. I have absolutely abused this thing and it keeps coming back for more!! One thing I will do is put heavier weight oil in the shocks but this is completely subjective to my riding style. This bike is for the person who loves to ride hard but not necessarily a racer. It holds up pretty well on the technical singletracks without feeling unstable.

Favorite Trail:Forest trails around Zurich
Duration Product Used:6 months
Purchased At:CycleShark, Zurich
Strengths:Great black looks, good component mix (LX / Deore / Judy C), reliable as of yet (had one nasty crash). Good value for the price.
Weaknesses:Promax brake levers felt flimsy (but worked). Bontrager Jones AC tyres were good for all round use, but a bit weak on wet stuff and felt instabile at lower pressure (2.5 bar). Saddle was _hard_ (ouch). Judy C fork works ok, but seems rather heavy. Bontrager crankset doesn't change between chainrings as smooth as my old LX set did, but works ok otherwise.
Similar Products Used:It's my first MTB. I had a roadbike until last september, when I broke the frame in an accident. I haven't regretted the change - biking is just more fun with this one (although you may not go as fast)
Bike Setup:As bought, except: XT brake levers (feel a lot more reliable), Avid V brakes (got them cheap), comfortable saddle, Panaracer Trailblaster tyres (more grip on wet material), Wellgo clipless pedals.

I may change the crank set sometime (LX Hollow-tech would be the choice). And I dream of disc brakes (who doesn't?)
Bottom Line:What can I say? It's my first mountain bike, so I cannot compare it to any others. In six months of daily use (commuting) and quite a lot of XC tours, it has worked very well. Apart from the saddle and the pedals, none of my upgrades were really necessary.

For wet or muddy tracks, the tyres have to be changed. And you should go for clipless pedals. It makes a world of difference...

So, I'll call it a very reliable, all-round, good-value-for-your-money bike.

Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $750.00
Purchased At:Cycle Fit
Strengths:Alpha ZX Aluminum Frame, Light weight, Disk Brak compatable.
Fast machine, with smooth shifting.
Weaknesses:Bontrager Comp crankset. This crankset is standard, but an upgrade is in the near future. Striped left pedal the first day on the trail. A friend bent the chain-ring twice on his Sur.
Similar Products Used:Big Sur (Gary Fisher)
2.0 GT Avalanche.
Bike Setup:Factory setup for now. V-brakes work fine for the rest of the summer. Plan to upgrade tires, and crankset next month. Forks?? No problems yet, just want something better.
Bottom Line:This machine can handle anything that I'm going to dish out right now. A group of us just started Biking and it’s ranking up there with Basketball on our to-do list.
As far as this Bike, I don’t see any reviews, but it's a solid performer. Test ride one and see if it fits your budget.
