$275.00 | | Purchased At: | Bike Gallery | | Strengths: | The stock parts lasted the duration of my ownership, easy shifting, nice knowing I had so many gears that I would never use. | | Weaknesses: | Chain came off if I pedeled backwards for more than a few seconds, so darn purty that someone dispossesed me off the bike. | | Bike Setup: | 21.5" frame, 26" wheels, original parts. | | Bottom Line: | I never actually took it offroad, and the bike became my car. Despite countless miles of road travel, never got bent out of shape over the handlebar setup and was easy to ride while still leaving me in total control. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

XTR shifter pods. | | Bottom Line: | Solid frame, did my upgrades and the bike is spot on for the cost. Very impressed with Trek's frame. I ride hard and it hasn't let me down yet, puts up with what I dish out and at 220 lbs, it doesn't take much too abuse a frame of that cost. $200.00 | | Purchased At: | E-bay | | Strengths: | For what you pay, stock components on this bike are pretty fair. With the exception of the front fork and saddle, the bike is pretty much trail ready. Trek uses the same frame all the way up to the 8000 serries hard tails i think, so basically its a sound frame. Just needs a tweak here and there. | | Weaknesses: | Like i said, for the money, it's great. Front fork, eh... saddle, i havent found one on a stock bike that wasnt bad, so thats no biggie either. its 8 spd, but 2 or 300 bones can throw a race worthy drive train on this bike. | | Similar Products Used: | Specialized Rockhopper FSR comp w/disc (my race bike) | | Bike Setup: | Bontrager fs2000 gel saddle, Race face XY alloy seat post, race face prodigy stem (8 degree, 110), Race face prodigy isis xc 9spd, shimano lx/xt derailleurs and cassetts(9spd), avid single digit Ti brakes + speed dial Ti levers. shimano xt pods(9spd). wtb velociraptor tires. shimano m-545 pedal, marzocchi mxr front squish. | | Bottom Line: | basically, i saw this bike on e-bay and picked it up cheap for a mess-around bike, something i could do really sloppy landings on and pretty much treat like dirt. all the components listed under setup are just from other bikes i've had and decided to put on. but for a little while i was taking it out with all the stock things on it, i took me off guard how well the bike did, i rode it hard and i couldnt have been happier. if i wasnt already a Specialized kinda guy i might go for the fuel 100 for my next race bike. at any rate, if you want a good starting hardtail, and something to build from, but this bike. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$260.00 | | Strengths: | Excellent frame and stock components, for the money, you cant really complain about them. | | Weaknesses: | Seat, could be better, but my two major problems with it are the stock front fork, and crank. The fork bottoms out left and right on any type of terrain and the crank may seriously be something off a huffy. | | Similar Products Used: | garry fisher, k2 | | Bike Setup: | Marzocchi z-3, race face isis prodigy xc, shimano xt rear derrailleurs, bontranger fs2000 gel sattle. stock everything else. | | Bottom Line: | In most cases i think trek gives you the most bang for you buck in a stock bike, and stock the bike is still very good for most single strack. $460.00 | | Purchased At: | The Bicycle Shop Grayling, MI | | Strengths: | The frame seems to be pretty strong considering the abuse I have been putting it through. The tire are great in dry conditions. | | Weaknesses: | This is my first Mountain Bike and did not know what I was looking for. After riding it for 1 month, I knew that this bike was not it. The frame is OK, but all the components are just a slight upgrade from a WAL-MART bike. I have upgraded everything on the bike. The frame and the tires are the only part of the bike left. The fork bottomed out and made me eat dirt more than once. The crank sounded if it was about to snap in half. If I had it to do all over again, I would have asked for better advice and gone with a more appropriate bike. Don't get me wrong this is a great bike for light riding but not for the type of riding that I have gotten into. | | Bike Setup: | Rolf Propel Wheel Set, Thomson stem and seatpost, Chris King Headset, LP Carbon composite Handle bars, ALL XT Drivetrain and brakes, TIME ALUM pedals, Bontrager FS2000 saddle. | | Bottom Line: | If I had it to do all over again I would have probably built my own bike. But If you don't plan on riding hard and just want a bike to do some light trail riding, this is a good bike for the price. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$420.00 | | Purchased At: | Breakaway Bycycles | | Strengths: | Strong, sturdy frame. Great price value. Stands up to extreme trails, won't breakdown.(if u take care of it) I think the seat is awesome! Don't know what every other reviewer is thinkin'? Even my friends and neighbors envy the seat. (The seat was not upgraded)Comfortable, soft, and I wish all seats were like it. I like the tires. | | Weaknesses: | Tire can pinch easily. I've had to replace one. Not a real problem. Still have front original tire, which I really like for it's good tread and agressivness. | | Similar Products Used: | Huffys and simple Treks. | | Bottom Line: | This is an excellent bike to get for the reasonable price buyers. Made well and good quality. I say only upgrade if you are crazy about getting the best stuff. A bike that will last in good condition without upgrades. This bike is a good mix between an easy riding bike that can master the trails and not sacrificing the best control capabilities that you can lose when you get huge forks! For amateur and intermediate riders. I haven't had any problems with it besides a tire pinch. I know someone who has had more problems with his Hoo Koo e Koo than my 4500. We both do same riding, cleaning, and taking care of the bikes. A good buy. Great value, great performance, great endurance! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$420.00 | | Purchased At: | Danny's Cycles | | Strengths: | -very solid, I've ridden everything from dirt trails to mountain races, and the bike stands up to it all -slow speed control, I've found that maneuvering this model at low speeds is far easier than comparitive Specialized Hardrocks and Giant Rainiers -crisp shifting, even if the altus and alivio units are not the greatest of components, they shift reliably almost very time if properly tuned; I have drenched them in mud, water and sand, and they still work | | Weaknesses: | -the jett fork, I'm not a very heavy guy, but the jett is noticeably insufficient on fast tracks, especially on downhill. I've tuned it to the highest rigidity, and it still bottoms out -the Altus crankset, had a few problems with the cogs; they had worn very easily in the first few months, and despite the reliability of the derailluer, the chain invariably misses it's shift, especially from 3 down to 2 -the pedals, these are platform units that were designed for BMX use, so needless to say, they are almost useless in tough terrain. I also picked up on some really irritating clicking noises resonating from them... -the seat, while comfortable, it is not a racing seat | | Similar Products Used: | I've ridden the Specialized Hardrock A1 FS Comp 2000 and 2001, as well as the Giant Rainier 2001 - as far as I can determine, I found both were considerably harder to handle on offroad use | | Bike Setup: | Stock: Altus/Alivio 24-speed drivetrain, RockShox Jett fork, Shimano V-Brakes | | Bottom Line: | A very good buy for the money. While not the best bike out there, it is definitely one of the best for it's price. It is a durable, tough vehicle which I have abused the hell out of, and it always comes back for more. Its frame is very upgradable, and is definitely a consideration for any beginner/intermediate biker. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$450.00 | | Purchased At: | Critium Bike shop | | Strengths: | The frame has held up in some pretty good down hill events, and even some completely unintentional spills | | Weaknesses: | I have already upgraded the seat, and needed new brake pads after coming down Pikes Peak. I find the components to be acceptable, especially for the price...they work.... | | Bike Setup: | Mostly stock except for the seat and pedals. Derailer soon though. | | Bottom Line: | This is my first bike, and I picked it based on price, parts, name, and most of all from the reviews that I read on here. I didnt have alot of money to spend and yet I got a bike that lets me keep up with my friends that have bike 5x's as much as mine! The only thing so far that I dont like is the tires. Those will be changed soon! I have changed out the pedals on day two, and have got a new seat! Based on what I've read here, I will be looking into a new derailer, but so far all is good. I have done alot of trails, and just did Pikes Peak, 14,110 ft down....nice! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$400.00 | | Strengths: | Great value for money, as somebody who is getting back into MTB'ing after a 5 year break, it is a good entry level bike. Solid frame, lite, good rims and tires, lots of options for frame size. | | Weaknesses: | Altus / Alivio components and Rock Shock Jett fork. The derailers are a little week, the front derailer has an unusual mounting assembly, may have to get an upgrade directly from Trek | | Bike Setup: | Stock 19 1/2" frame, added toe clips and bar ends. | | Bottom Line: | Overall a really sweet ride for the price, rugged bike that will take a beating. The front forks could do with an upgrade and the hubs would be better if they were sealed. I think an upgrade to deore or LX components would be a good investment but what do you expect for $400. Definitely a good entry level bike with the ability to upgrade as needed. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$450.00 | | Strengths: | Strong, light, well gusseted aluminum frame with nice angles and beefy head and top tubing. Handlebars have a nice spread with good shifter and brake replacement. Cheap (compared to newer mountain bikes that can cost as much as a car!!) | | Weaknesses: | Rear derailleur......bent at tsali......it's gone!!! non-sealed wheel hubs need to be repacked after riding in mud and sand. Front forks feel dampen late and rebound hard.......gotta find the right setting!! | | Bike Setup: | stock | | Bottom Line: | Good bike for those of us who can't see paying $1000 for a $450 bike that, with a few upgrades, is just as good. Scrap the rear derailleur before it leaves you stranded in 2-3 gears and you're good to go. The brakes wore out in 1 weekend of riding at Tsali in the rain and are NOT cheap to replace. I suspect it's like the printer industry. Sell the product cheap......then gouge on the ink and brakes!!! Good all around compromise bike. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$430.00 | | Purchased At: | Bike Outfitters | | Strengths: | Very sturdy frame, rims can take a beating, an overall good bike. | | Weaknesses: | The fork, and the rear derailler. The fork bottoms out a lot, and has too much spring too it. It is adjustable, but even when it is at it's stiffest, it is still to bouncy, at least for downhills. I've had a lot of trouble with the rear derailler. It shifts when it's not supposed to, and makes a really annoying clinking sounds when you go over big bumps. If you are going to upgrade anything, upgrade the derailler first, then the fork. | | Similar Products Used: | none | | Bike Setup: | all stock, working on the derailler and fork. Added some toe clips. | | Bottom Line: | This is a very solid bike. It has it's downfalls, but for $430 it is an incredible deal. I've ridden about 500 miles in the few months that i've had it, and I really don't have any huge complaints. If you have the money, I would suggest upgrading the rear derailler and the fork, but they are not vital. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$450.00 | | Purchased At: | Dud Thames Bike Shop | | Strengths: | The overall value of the bike. In the amount of time that I've had it, I've run into one problem - the cranks took a dump on me. This happened about a week ago so for the most part, it's been extremely reliable. I weighed 250 lbs when I bought it and it still handled my fat ass. Speaking of weight, the bike is pretty light as well. | | Weaknesses: | The crank. I didn't like it when I first bought the bike but stuck with it anyway since it served its purpose. Now that it's broke, I'll replace it with probably an LX model or something similar since I mostly ride on relatively easy trails. I wasn't too fond of the pedals either. | | Similar Products Used: | None. This is my first bike. | | Bike Setup: | Mostly stock. I changed out the pedals for the Wellgo SPDs that are used as OEM equipment from mail order houses. | | Bottom Line: | This bike rocks. If it were stolen or something tragic happened to it, I'd go out and buy the exact same model without even looking at other bikes. It has been reliable and looks good too. If you want a decent XC bike and you're on a budget, get this bike. Hopefully you'll be as happy as I am. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$430.00 | | Purchased At: | Allanti Bicycles | | Weaknesses: | I'm not crazy about the seat | | Bike Setup: | bike shop stocked. | | Bottom Line: | I'm mostly a recreational rider. I have done some of the easier off road trails. I'm not much into doing magical in the air bike moves, but I enjoy a good brisk, sweating, huffin and puffin up hill ride in some off road situation. I think the 4500 Trek does a great job for this type of riding. The gearing has been mostly good with smooths shifts. Once in awhile it has it's quirky moods so to speak, but all in all, the bike gearing system does a great job. The bike and it the components seem to be rugged enough to handle trails much tougher than the trails I go on. This bike excells in the type of riding I like to do. I like the appearance of the bike with the Bontrager crowbar. Some other recreational bikes in this range had those silvery looking handlebars that position the rider in a more upright postion. I can see the wisdom in this, but I like the lower riding postion. The Trek 4500 and Trek 4300 both have a nice handlebar postion that provides comfort and stylistic appeal. I think this is nice bike for the price! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$430.00 | | Strengths: | The bike has a solid frame. Nice color scheme. Stocked with respectable parts at the given price point. | | Weaknesses: | Thankfully, I have not found its weaknesses. | | Similar Products Used: | None | | Bike Setup: | Stock | | Bottom Line: | At the price of 430 bills, the Trek 4500 offers a nice solid aluminum frame. The stock components are respectable for a person like me that is only a weekend warrior. I really have not had any problems with my bike and my current needs have been satisfied. Although I am satified for now, I'm sure as I ride more and get better, I will begin considering to upgrade certain parts (i.e. front suspension) based on future needs. All in all the Trek 4500 offers a quality bike for a beginner or weekend warrior to hone their skills on the trails. This bike is obviously not for a technical rider who is looking more into the $700+ price range. Once the rider improves and yearns for upgraded components, the Trek 4500 provides a solid frame from which to build. Can't go wrong for $430. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$399.00 | | Purchased At: | Pedal 'n' Spoke | | Strengths: | Value - great frame and solid components for the $$$. The Jett shock is mediocre for heavier riders... dialing in additional pre-load to reduce bottoming adds a lot of friction so the shock doesn't do much on smaller higher-frequency bumps. If you are over 180#, upgrade the shock or at least install the firm ride kit from Rock Shox. | | Weaknesses: | Front shock and seat. $400.00 | | Purchased At: | The Touring Cyclist | | Strengths: | Great bike for the price, and the best part is, it's so damn upgradable. The stock crowbars are great, and the frame is awesome. I'm having a blast fine tuning this bike to my single track needs. | | Weaknesses: | For the price, you'd think there'd be a list here, huh? Well, I guess I really wasn't fond of the Rock Shox Jett they put on it stock. I wasn't to fond of the cheesy "fat butt" seat also. And the components could be a step higher. But who's complaining? None of that is so bad that the bike's not totally dependable. | | Similar Products Used: | Schwinn Moab ('93 rigid frame) | | Bike Setup: | Shimano Altus/Alivio components, rapid fire shifters. Upgraded to a Manitou Mars 1.... makes the bike REAL nice. Just put on a Giro/Fizik Nisene seat. Currently working on another set of wheels, to swap out with the current Matrix 750s. Oh yeah, switched the stem out for another bontrager. Needed a bit more length. | | Bottom Line: | The bottom line is this. Get yourself a Trek 4500, and have fun building it. No matter what you do with it, whether it's stock or totally tricked out, it's going to be a good solid bike. $400.00 | | Purchased At: | Bike Connection | | Strengths: | Worthy upgradable frame, good parts (mostly),not expensive, great for beginner MB'er. | | Weaknesses: | Junk fork, weird (29.2mm) seatpost size, schrader valves, a little heavy, junky Promax brakes | | Similar Products Used: | Various bikes from Specialized, Trek, Dagger, Bridgestone. Looked at similar Giant, Gary Fisher, Schwinn, GT | | Bike Setup: | Medium (girlfriend's bike). Replaced Jett with Manitou MARS (hydraulic damping, 80mm travel, PLUS 3/4lb lighter), LX V-brakes | | Bottom Line: | An OK deal for the money, but it's ripe for upgrades. I'm sure you can ride it as is (and I'm guilty of upgrading parts for dubious reasons), but I really suggest upgrading the fork first thing (it's a pogo stick) if you're doing any trail riding, and the brakes the second. About the seatpost; what were they thinking? 29.2mm? Try finding THAT somewhere. To be fair, Trek sells a shim so you can use a 27.2mm post, but you shouldn't have to. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$399.00 | | Purchased At: | Matthews | | Strengths: | Light (too me) been a while since purchase. Great looking bike.Rapid fire shifting. Price. No pain or numbness in the rear, good seat. Large 22.5 inch frame (6'3"), good for bigger folks! | | Weaknesses: | Front shock very poor, bottomed out too easy. I am heavy but even 150 pound son agreed. Bike shop made it right by adding stronger springs, (excellent). This shock was not right to begin with, test rides with other bikes were different. | | Similar Products Used: | Tested only- 4300, C400. | | Bike Setup: | Computer, lights for street, Blackburn tail rack. | | Bottom Line: | Searched internet and every bike store in Indy. I am happy with this bike. Do not like the idea of China made frame and was told by some dealers that it was not until I seen a sticker on one.If you are looking for a bike with trail ability and street use, this is the one. I am not able to comment on heavy trail use.Would have given '5' rating except the front shock is poor for heavier people. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$400.00 | | Purchased At: | Stick's n Stones | | Strengths: | I put most of my miles in on rides through the back roads for exercise. Yeah, I know, it's a waste of a good mountain bike but it beats sitting on a stationary bike. I did have the chance to take it on a technical trail last weekend, I loved it. The aluminum frame transfers the energy right to the ground, you really can feel the difference. The Rock Shox soaked up all the bumps, I only bottomed out once. I know I took this trail faster and easier than I did last summer. I'm a novice so I'm not familair with all the top end componants but I think this bike is spec'd out nicely. The bar, stem, rims, shifters, derailleurs etc. may be bottom line but they are the bottom line from qaulity manufacturers like Rock Shox, Bontrager, Shimano. All in all a real nice package. | | Weaknesses: | There seems to be a little flex in the bottom bracket. When I stand up and hammer it in top gear, the front derailleur rubs the chain. I'm having a hard time getting it adjusted so it doesn't rub yet lets the other gears shift correctly. Not a biggie, if I can't tweak it out I can live with it. Also, as it has broken in, the top roller wheel on the rear derailleur just touches the largest sprocket when I'm in my lowest gear. As this just showed up I'm sure it can be adjusted out. | | Similar Products Used: | 1999 Trek 800 | | Bike Setup: | Stock except for a bicycle computer (I know, some people think they're for wienies, but I like it), and toe clips (I had to trim them down with a Dremel to get them to mount on the platform pedals). The seat isn't an issue for trail riding as you are in and out of the seat, however, due to the amount of time I put in the saddle on my road rides I plan to replace the saddle with a Koobi Enduro AU. I also want to make the jump to clipless pedals. | | Bottom Line: | We're talking entry level here. No high end componants but if you want those you don't look in this price range. You gotta start somewhere, and let's face it, most people don't drop a grand on a bike when they're just starting a new sport. I started on a $285 Trek 800 and I fell in love with bikes again, so much I wanted more, hence the 4500. For this price range I don't think the Trek 4500 can be beat. Quality name brand componants (which can be upgrades when they wear out, which I don't expect anytime soon), solid frame (the blue and black color scheme looks realll nice), a good quality front shock to smooth out the ugly stuff, what else can I say. This bike is perfect for my current riding level. Maybe someday a Fuel would be nice but for now I'm happy with my 4500 and to be honest, for my ability level, I see no major benefits to anything in between.
If you're just getting into the sport (or have been riding a while but don't have deep pockets) and can pop $400 for a bike pop for this one, you can't go wrong.

$550.00 | | Purchased At: | Golden's Bike Shop, LaGrange | | Strengths: | I'm actually reviewing the 2001 Trek 4900 (standard, no disc brakes), since this site doesn't have a spot for this bike (yet). The frame is great, very responsive. The components (except for the front der.) are good, especially for the money. The RockShox Judy TT works well, even though to my knowledge it doesn't have a preload adjustment, I weigh only 115 and it still absorbs hits well. Also, the frame/wheels combo doesn't beat you up but I invested in a suspension seatpost anyway. It did make a big difference, but don't expect a sus. seatpost to make a hardtail into a fs bike. | | Weaknesses: | I'm not sure if it's the front derailuer (Acera) or the chainrings (also Acera), but the entire front shifting could use some help. It works fine if you're pedaling casually but if you're really pedaling hard make sure to let off some and it should shift relatively fine. | | Similar Products Used: | nuthin' | | Bike Setup: | Wellgo 800 clipless pedals (works great), Nashbar suspension seatpost2 (also good). Otherwise stock. | | Bottom Line: | It works well in a mildly technical trail I sometimes go to, and I have no doubt that this bike can handle anything you throw at it. Extremely well made with solid component spec. Get it if you want a good low price mountain bike. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$425.00 | | Purchased At: | Princeton, NJ bike shop | | Strengths: | nice paint job, huge 24" frame size | | Weaknesses: | lame pedals, rock hard seat | | Similar Products Used: | old worn out schwinn road bike | | Bike Setup: | in the garage | | Bottom Line: | Do you really need an $800 bike? I don't think so. Trek did a great job producing a inexpensive bike for the average Joe (or Jane) who wants an ATB.
I got this bike because of the big frame size of 24". I'm 6'-5" and I need big stuff in general.
This bike feels really heavy, clumsy, and slow after using my road bike, I love it anyway. I got used to it real quick. I only ride for exersize and fun anyway, so who cares if it's slower on pavement? I really like the sturdiness and versatility of the bike.
I haven't used any of the really low gears yet, but I assume they have some purpose. Maybe towing a bus?
Anyway, this is the ideal bike for the casual rider who wants to try an ATB bike. It's cheap, but high quality. It could be upgraded and pounded on for years. It's a good value.
HOWEVER, prepare to buy pedals and a new saddle. The ones on the bike are junk. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$425.00 | | Purchased At: | FreeWheeling | | Strengths: | Good over all value for a lower/mid tiered bike. Relatively light, front shock, decent components, well balanced and some very smart engineering, especially the little details. :-) Effective knob pattern on the stock tires. | | Weaknesses: | Don't know yet, but suspect it won't be as durable as a higher tiered model. You get what ya pay for, right? :-p I don't like the chrome and red color scheme, but so what... Noticed the thing was assembled in China? Hope it wasn't 'slave labor' :-\ Chinese folks are making Westerner's toys these days; we should appreciate their hard work. Probably don't get compensated as much as Americans... | | Similar Products Used: | Used to have a Specialized Rock Hopper (~1990 model?). Bikes have definitely improved in both performance and value. Front shocks make a huge difference with regard to handling, safety, attainable speed over terrain, and so on... Amazing. The body english and techniques I learned from years of motocross riding in the 70's seem to translate a bit, allowing me to ride with more confidence and speed. Without the fork suspension, bicycles don't handle as much like motorcycles. Goofy, huh? I've heard that seat suspension is a comprimise allowing greater down hill speed without sacrificing uphill power transfer. I'm just a trail loafer now, no longer a racer head like I was in my Triathlon/Duathlon maniacal years... I looked at the new Specialized Rock Hopper (same price range) and liked the Trek a little better, though the differences are subtle. If I ever upgrade, maybe I'll actually research these things and I'll know what I'm talking about? Nah... | | Bike Setup: | Huh? What the heck is that? I'm 6'2" and currently weigh 180 lbs. Got a 21 inch frame. Everything's stock on my bike. Me not bike head, just out for fun and some aerobic exercize for health reasons and to keep from getting fat. :-o | | Bottom Line: | Any of these lower middle tiered bikes are a great value right now, with a good balance of components and features. The Trek has always had nuances of engineering niceness in my mind, for a main stream brand anyway... But to be honest I didn't look a lot. Had a wonderful experience with a Trek road bike, which I raced and put thousands of miles on... So I am psychologically biased. Bottom line is everyone should be out there riding!~ Austin has some good trails. Heck, I live right in the middle of 'em. Seems like every bit of the Texas Hill Country has trails, so as long as you don't run into any fences or Shrub advocates, you'll have a blast! (They're all slouching in their caves staring in to the one eyed monster anyway). :-] Hee hee... | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Double wall rims take a pounding but the shock wont. I give it 4 flaming chilis overall for putting street grade crank, front deralier(altus) and shock on a mountain bike but for the price I cant really complain to much,so 5 chilis for Value. Great bike for light trail riding and with upgraded shock you can attack the trails aggressivly. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$377.00 | | Purchased At: | Cycle Sales Co. - Boardman, Ohio | | Strengths: | Great frame, sturdy, pretty solid components rims are super solid (double walled, an upgrade from 2000) Rock Shox Jett does pretty well by me
| | Weaknesses: | A few setup problems that may or may not be specific to me (spokes needed a helping of loctite because they kept getting a bit loose. and brakes, while they work great and I mean great, have been a bit tricky and out of alignment every now and again - but aside from disc brakes, we all go through that.) | | Similar Products Used: | Old Diamondback (96 Outlook) | | Bike Setup: | Stock with clips | | Bottom Line: | I tell you what, after shopping around for a $400 and under bike that can handle some pretty decent singletrack, I went with the 2001 Trek 4500. After a few rides I had to have the spokes treated with loctite but that has been about it. The thing rides great and over the last 2 weeks I finally got it out on some moderate singletrack and the bike performed perfectly. It belongs on the trails in my opinion but it certainly does just fine on the rails/trails with my wife. Only thing, the aggressive Bontrager tires buzz abit on pavement because I am too lazy to change the tires for semi slicks. Regardless, if you are looking for a solid mid-level mtb that can handle most situations including some moderately aggressive singletrack and not break the bank, take a hard look at the 4500, I'm glad I did. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$420.00 | | Purchased At: | Wheel Base | | Strengths: | Weight (frame) Breaks | | Weaknesses: | Weight (components) | | Bottom Line: | This bike is much lighter than my last bike, but then anything would be. Crashed it quite a few times and the only thing that has broken is a reflector off my right pedal. I'm not an expert cyclist so I can't really tell anything that is poor on this bike. The components are a bit on the heavy side and the shock isn't the strongest (but at just over 100 pound it doesn't need to be).
Overall this bike suited me well because it didn't cost me much up front, is fairly light, and is worth/has a lot of room for future upgrades. As things break as they invaribly do I will just replace them with better versions. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |
