I purchased this bike new in July 2000 and have ridden it for the past 5 years. Though newer and suposedly better technology is available my 2000 Trek 8500 is a comparatively great bike and I haven't desired to upgrade my brakes, fork, or shifting components. I have replaced the Bontrager RE-1 clipless pedals with some cheap plastic ones but that is just personal taste. I feel that I got a great deal on this bike and believe that it will continue to be a source of joy for years to come.

Awesome bike. I bought the frame on the classifieds for $255 with the King headset and Easton post. I put all the other stuff on it from the frame I had before. This thing flys. It's definetly the best bike I've owned yet. Super light, stiff, and amazingly strong. You can't beat the value. New, it's like $1600, which is a great deal, but I paid under a grand for the complete bike. My only complaint is that it is a little too short, but a long stem will fix that

LIGHT!!! At just about 23 lbs fo the 17.5" frame, I'd say its pretty light. All around good climber, descender, and great on tight singletrack. Has a great mix of xt and xtr components at an unbeatalbe price. If you want something light and race worthy or just like to go on long technical rides this is the bike for you.
Weaknesses:
Bike can be a little squirly going up super steep uphills. But that's gonna happen with almost any bike you would come across. Another thing. The stock tires are awful. I replaced them quickly with a pair of WTB Velociraptors. Other than that no complaints here. The bike is awsome.

Bottom Line:
I bought this bike off a friend in the winter of 2001 and i am absolutely loving the bike. Where i live all the trails are extremely up and down and this bike performs. In my opinion this is a great bike at a reasonable price.

I got the 8500LT, not the basic 8500. It's a very stable handler, and the Hayes brakes ooze power. The fork is ok, though hard to adjust, and the frame has a Hayes disc mount, which is stronger than the int'l standard.
Weaknesses:
The suspension seatpost(a Rockshox) developed a nasty lateral slop, so I switched it out to a rigid Bonty. The rear hub isn't cartridge, but the front one is, so that's a pain, and kind of cheap.
Stock, save for the Seatpost(Bontrager Comp), Saddle(Titec Berzerkr), pedals (Time ATAC).
Bottom Line:
This bike was a much-needed upgrade from my old(93) Cadex w/ rigid fork, XT/LX/XTR 8-speed bike. IT was too small(I'm 6'3, it's an 18"), beat up, and not great. This bike slows me down really well, even though I don't need to, it's so stable at high speeds, and it fits a lot better. I also like having suspension, and 4" of Marzocchi-built suspension. So what it's not the easiest to tune, I don't care. It's sprung properly for my weight, and that's all that matters, well, mostly. This bike rules. Get one.

Strengths:
Quality frame, with an excellent geometry. Component kit is excellent, especially the Marzocchi shock and Hayes hydraulic disc brakes. Warranty. Local manufacturer. Value for the money. We
Weaknesses:
I am used to grip shift. Will see how I like triggers. I have seen the ICON crank complaints, I will see how they last/perform long term. LX front Der.
I am adding Time pedals. No other changes for know.
Bottom Line:
This review is for a new 2000 8500LT. I have been looking for my first mountain bike, with a front suspension. I have been riding rigid for years and as I get older I am tiring of the abuse. I was torn between dual suspension models and a hardtail with a suspension seat post. I demoed numerous models over the past two months and happened upon this bike a day before I was going to purchase the above listed Gary Fisher Mt. Tam Disc. This bike hit a home run when I demoed it. I fall between most company's bike sizes, but the 19.5 Trek was just right. Until the Trek, the GF was the best fit and pick. Bottom line for me, what a great deal. Mail order on the parts kit alone is about $1700, then add in an excellent US made frame. I bought it on the spot.
I may make a few changes over the course of the season. I have not used riser bars before. I will see how I like them, if I don't I will switch back to strait with bar ends. Same comment applies to the trigger shifters. I am willing to try something new.
Who should buy: Anyone looking for a great, higher end, hard tail, trail bike at a great price. I suspect these are hard to find now, I was lucky. But looking at the current 8500, I think it would be a great bike at a good price also, especially if you are looking for a lighter racing bike rather than the LT trail bike.
I will report back after a few months if my views change.

Strengths:
Quick, lively feel. It was ready to roll with only minor adjustments (seatpost, computer). Very lightweight. Frame is not overly harsh(Impt.- I weigh 215.)Great shifting. Great paint job. Good mix of components. I have the Avid brakes, these things will stop on a dime and give you back change. Climbs like a rocket. I heard bad things about the pedals, but when I began to use them, they were awesome, as I'm used to clipless pedals from the 105 group (circa 1993). Descends amazingly. Just purely amazing.
Weaknesses:
The Rolf Wheelset. For a guy my size, the wheels flexed to the point that the brakes were rubbing the rims, even with the brakes adjusted to the point where the lever bottomed out. The tires just didn't feel sticky enough to me. I have 'em stored for future use, though. The Sid XC wasn't and still hasn't been adjusted too well for my size.

The initial price was high, but I think that it will pay off in the end. You always get what you pay for. The bike suits my riding style, and it will get you anywhere you want to go. I would definitely reccomend this bike to someone, especially if they are in the market for a superlight, tough riding machine.

Weaknesses:
Well I have not owned the bike for long, however I will tell you without a shadow of a doubt that the stock -Bontrager Revolt- tires will be useless in mud! In addition the bike is a pretty stiff ride (I like this as to much flex bothers me). The handlebars are too wide and will need to be modified (I like them around shoulder width + .5"). Oh yes, I must not forget, and of course I know this is entirely preference but it did not come with handlebar extentions for climbing...I can't stand riser bars!

Bottom Line:
I have just purchased the bike not too long ago, however it climbs with a vengeance and is lightning on the downside! Time will tell if the new 2001 SID's hold up to the punishment. I am not a racer only a chump that loves to ride XC and will do it as often as possible. This is my forth bike and I must say coming from a Fisher this is nearly the same geometry, just specked better and cheaper than the MT. Tam. Pretty great value if you asked me. Bottom Line:
Here's the deal: I worked for a dealer when I bought the bike, and now work for another Trek dealer (in the UK). I'm not slagging the bike, but this is what I'd tell a customer:
This bike doesn't handle very well. It's slow and unexciting, and I wish that I'd never sold the Bokor. But! I prefer twitchy bikes that demand rider participation, and consider myself a fast singletrack rider. I bought the bike just before doing the Great Divide ride, so swaped the SID for a coil sprung Manitou, popped an 11-32 XT cassette on, and built up an LX/Bontrager wheelset (which is on my singlespeed). It took nearly 4,000 hard miles to kill the Icon rings, which is incredible (with White Lightning lube and a Sachs chain- the one thing that shimano can't do well). The bike has been pretty much worry free and towed my BOB well. the USE XCR is a must for longer rides, though, as the frame is pretty stiff. While the Rolf wheels are light, stay true, and look cool, the Dolomites' KT HUBS HAVE NO PLACE ON A BIKE OF THIS QUALITY. PERIOD. I nuked two cassette bodies (which are near impossible to remove) before upgrading.
Remember- buy from your local shop- the telephone sales guy won't offer you a cup of joe when you call.
NOTE: If you're looking at the '01 model, make sure that it has the new rear dropouts (international Standard compatible), instead of the crap Hayes version- I've seen both floating around with '01 colors.
Dodgy wheels and sedative handling mean you get 3. Good price, though.

Did I miss anything?
Bottom Line:
I got this frame as a replacement for my 1997 Trek 8900sl frame (it cracked at the wishbone area). I originally built it up for my wife. I used cheap components with some XTR, nothing exceptionally light (and it only weighed 21.5# with an old Judy SL fork). After my custom built Russ Denny race bike was stolen, I confiscated this 8500 and built it up as above--even though the White Bros fork is at least a quarter pound heavier than they advertise (it is still an excellent fork) this bike weighs 20.5# with cages and computer, ready to ride. As for the ride, there really is nothing special about any hardtail frame with "standard" geometry--they all ride the same because they are all same (they are just welded by different people). That said, this bike rides perfectly. It is solid feeling (not flexy), it turns quickly and it handles predictably. It climbs like a raped ape and decends with the best of them (although the twitchiness of any hardtail takes some getting used to). Bottom line: don't let the 3.45# weight put you off of this frame--it can easily be built up under 20# (at least Trek is honest about its weights, unlike almost every other company out there).

My review before almost a year ago has now been changed a little. In my last review I said that the Bontrager pedals were a weakness. After riding many miles in many different kinds of terrain I've decided that these pedals suit some places terrificly and others horribly. Sandy areas (Moab) these pedals suck bad in. Mud/snow/gooey stuff these things work amazing!! Anyway, if you want consistency change the pedals but if you can live with them like me you won't be unhappy. Overall I'm very pleased with them. Now to the other things. The fork is running smoother than ever and is awesome. The 4" of travel has saved my butt a few times. The wheels are incredible!!!!!!! I've never trued them yet!! The components are holding up just as well. I went a few months with no maintenance (tisk, tisk) and the chain even started to get rust on it but it still performs above par. I've managed to make my 44 tooth chainring a 36 tooth doing trials but it still shifts fairly smoothly. Overall this bike has made me very happy and I recommend it to anyone. Great for climbing and descending. I go a lot faster these days too....

Bike Setup:
I quickly destroyed the UN52 bottom bracket, which I replaced with the much better UN72. I dont like the stock tires, and depending on conditions use Ritchy Speedmaxs or Panaracer Smokes. The OEM cassette is heavy, a XT cassette with its AL carrier saved quite a bit of weight.
Bottom Line:
One of the best stock mountain bikes available. Specialized also has a lot to offer at the price point, but I really prefer the long top tube of the 8500. Handles perfectly to my liking - a good combination of "flickability" and stability.
Its a stiff frame, combined with the stiff Rolf wheels, makes the rough stuff painful on the rear. The SID shock is great. The overall light weight, and stiff BB make the harshness more than bareable considering how well the bike climbs.

Compared to that, this 8500 is a gem and unbelieveably light weight. It's strong, smooth, and climbs hills with ease. I will be able to increase my off-road riding skills with this bike, and I plan to sign up for some local races. For the price, you can't go wrong with this bike right out of the box.

Purchased At:

Strengths:
- Great Shox's - Stupidly Light - Good out of the box comp set - Very fast.
Weaknesses:
Pedals, Pedals and errrr Pedals, being a clipless rider, the plastic fillins for the clips are iffy to say the least. Snapped one of the metal eyes on the front derailleur so it got mangles up on the top ring to the point of replacment within 3 days....umm sure it must be a one off.
Similar Products Used:
GT rebound - Demo'd Kona Kula - Demo'd Raliegh - Activator II - Not a bike, but a brick, stopped me from walking the 3 miles to work for a while.
Bike Setup:
Well the first thing I did was remove the god awfull (IMHO) avid brakes and put on XTR V-Brakes (IMHO, the only V-Brakes worth using) and I also replaced the bottom braket and chainset for total XT. I think the next to go will be the casette...umm XT or XTR as the rest of the bike bar the hubs is like this. The shox's needed tuning a bit straight away, mainly requiring more pressure, very simple change.
Bottom Line:
I intend on racing this bike next spring, with out making to many changes to the out of the box setup.
This is one of the best bikes I have tested, which has proved the theory that a big price tag is no longer required for a race worthy bike and setup.
Rock Shox have sorted out the SIDs so there totally amazing ( No more leaking or blowing out...BONUS!! ), I will never go back to elastomer/spring based forks.
And a final note, anyone in the UK, especially in East Anglie who may stumble upon this site, should call freewheel in norwich, they set the bike up with the XT stuff within 2 hours of the bike arrving and the shop and they replaced the front derailleur, lengthend the travel on the forks all with no charge and within an hour or two.

This is an absolutely fabulous bike that goes like a rocket. I am a much better rider because of it. The greatest part of riding this bike is devouring the up hills. Great for money (considering the XTR/XT components) when you compare to bikes that are double in price. I cannot see myself outgrowing this bike for a very long time. If you can outlay this sort of money for a bike then it's worth every cent. (the $2700 price is in Sin dollars thats about $1620 US)

Light weight, great seat, gearing is a dream, geometry has improved my climbing vis a vis traction, can make areas I could not on my GT of same size. This bike has improved my riding, and I can't see myself needing to upgrade anything on this baby.. except the tires. The RS SID works perfectly with this bike.
Weaknesses:
Pedal clearance seems a little lower than my GT, I find my pedals hit the rocks more often, just a matter of learning a slight stutter stroke. Tires that came with the bike (Bontrager Revolt X) weren't good for anything but dry hardpack, I mean, who only rides when there's ideal conditions??! I put on my fav's: Panaracer Dart/Smoke combo and now nothing, not snow, loose jagged rocks, mud bogs, or wet/slick conditions can stop me and Trek!!

-Great parts spec (amazing fork, brakes, tires, trick wheels) -Light considering the type of bike it is -Most high tech frame in the biz that isn't custom made -Just "feels right"
Weaknesses:
-Pedals are iffy... could be great, could not -No excuses for being slow anymore!
This is a review of the 8500LT... what's the deal with not having it's own page??? This bike just has that "right" feeling. It's something I can't describe, but it has made me a faster rider on certain smoother DH trails. Considering I'm coming from a 5" full-sus, that's an amazing feat. I was sure that I would have to re-adjust a little coming back to a hardtail... well, I did: I'm now carying more speed into corners (great to see the performance of the Hayes). The fork is very smooth after about 2 minutes of riding, brakes take about 20-30 stops to get good, and tires & wheels shine right away! I can't comment on durability, but up to now, everything has held up great. I've taken some nasty DS landings on the wheels, and they are still true. The brakes just stay consistent no matter what, and shifting is top notch. The Icon Graphite parts look good and perform super. The Rock Shox seatpost was one thing I was doubtfull about, but it's still there and I've grown to like it! One thing though: set it up a hair lower than usual, because if you drop behing the seat for a descent, it will spring up a little and the family jewels don't appreciate the trip back up onto the saddle. Ouch! As for the pedals, this is a personnal matter for everyone. I think bike companies should not spec a set, but give a 100$ credit at the shop so you can pick the pair you like. I ditched the Bonti pedals because I've read some iffy reviews (some hate 'em, some love 'em) and I like to have some larger platforms to ride unclipped. 545's fit the bill (light, cheap, match bike) Finally, in my opinion, this is one of the best looking hardtails this year... yeah, yeah vanity sucks, but who doesn't ogle at their bike from time to time! ;-)
Easy five chili's overall!!!

Much better geometry than the 1993 Trek 8700 it replaces. Looks great. The disk brakes and long travel fork complete the picture. A real clydesdale bike : I have the 21.5" version.
Weaknesses:
Watch out for those disk brakes when you remove the wheels. If you squeeze the brake lever with the disk (i.e. wheel) removed, the caliper re-adjusts and it's fiddly to fix. Easy mistake to make. Didn't like the Bontrager RE-1 pedals. Too stiff to release, and I tried the Bontrager and both types of Shimano cleats. Even the multi release version got stuck and was difficult to engage.
Similar Products Used:
A much-modified Trek 8700 carbon fibre from 1993 or so, which is a good deal heavier.
Bike Setup:
Apart from the changes above, I have a slightly higher stem than stock to give me a more sit-up-and-beg riding style. I am a 50 year old clydesdale with a bad back !
I also changed the tyres to Ritchey WCS Speedmax which I happen to like. Pity about the blue rim on this tyre though !
Bottom Line:
No doubt about it, I am very pleased with this choice. Trek seems to have done almost everything I would do myself to modify an existing bike, only better.
The "Bomber" fork (look guys, I am nearly fifty, do I really have to have that silver logo on the fork ?! :-))is much better than the Judy XC I put on my 8700,
The RockShox seat post is much better than the USE one I have been using.

Bottom Line:
First of all, I am review the 2000 Trek 8500, not the 8500 LT, as everyone below me has reviewed. The LT has disc brakes and a suspension seat post, as well as a long travel fork (hence the LT for Long Travel). The straight 8500 on the other hand is more of a cross country racing bike, with v-brakes, and components chosen with weight in mind. The bottom line for the 8500 is this: THIS BIKE ROCKS! I thought there wouldn't be much of a difference between last years 8000 and the 2000 8500, boy was I wrong. The difference in weight alone is astonishing. I haven't weighed my bike, but I would bet it weighs in at around 23.5 or so. The Sid XC is awesome, plush, stiff, smooth travel. They also added the XTR rear derailur, shaving off those extra ounces. Overall, Trek makes a bike that handles with quickness, and gives one the feeling of stability in the single track. This is a bike that I will be riding for a long time.

This bike rules for the all-around rider desiring great strenght and geometry. It loves to bomb down hills and of course hit the jumps and dropoffs. The forks, brakes, and wheels are all ready to take it too. I LOVE the Z.3 Flylight 100. It feels sooooo smooth. The brakes are awesome, haven't done anything to them yet as far as maintenance goes. The frame is stiff and light and gets up the hill as fast as a Klein for all I'm concerned about.
Weaknesses:
The pedals won't release at all with the slightest bit of mud/sand. Sure, no pedals perfect but this is scary not releasing. Also, the cranks are slow shifting but I'll live.
This bike is awesome, everywhere. The little quirks that it has are easily solved, if they even bother you. The bike rides wonderfully and I wouldn't trade it for any other bike, period. Some complain about the $1900 dollar price tag but for what you get it's an incredible value. This bike is for any rider due to it's versatility as a competent climber and a confident descender.

The dual disc brakes are the BALLS!!!! You are able to have complete control on stopping/locking up either wheel with two fingers. I found the slacked geometry to be very cool when dropping down steep shoots. The combination of brakes/geometry allows you to do things other bikes would fail miserbly at (ie: on steel DH, lock the rear wheel and sling perpendicular to the slope to stop and admire the views. Just like skiing!!!!). The bike is able to get to a reasonable 24 LBS bu changing out tires, tubes, cassette and BB. It has great cornering ability and the power goes straight to the rear tire (unlike my FS bike)

Very stiff frame. Seat post helps alot but I would choose my GT LTS in the rough XC courses at NE ski area races.
