Strengths:Kick ass geometry. Good component setup. Light, strong rims & brakes.
Weaknesses:Crappy tires.
Similar Products Used:Trek 820
Bike Setup:Stock except for Panaracer tires, rockshox seatpost, icon barends
Bottom Line:This bike kicks butt for the money, especially over a Trek 6500. Once you get rid of the crappy Bontrager tires and get some decent ones, it'll corner like it's on rails. Quick handling, very lightweight. If you can get your hands on one for a good price, definitly go for it. The Rolf Dolomite wheels not only look cool, but are very lightweight and very strong. I'm a big guy who has put a lot of miles on this baby and haven't had one problem.

Strengths:Update: I've had this bike for well over a year now and it is fast, light and efficent. I've crashed this bike hard on several occasions, once fracturing my scapula and only a few minor scratches on the frame came from it. This bike is an excellent hardtail and has decent components for the $$. Light, manuverable and an excellent bike on the climbs. Even good for some minor jumping and log hopping. Awesome Rolf Satetite wheelset.
Weaknesses:AC Jones tires not too great in wet or muddy conditions. Best suited for dry conditions. Rockshox Judy fork and Bontrager cranks are adequet but not th best.
Similar Products Used:Specialized Hardrock, Gary Fisher 29", Trek Fuel.
Bike Setup:Shimano drivetrain & pedals, Bontrager cranks and tires. Excellent Rolf Satelite Wheelset, Bontrager grips, handlebars, stem and seat. Rickshox Judy Race Fork.
Bottom Line:A light, fast, efficent hardtail with decent components and price. Can take hard riding and abuse. Nice paint job that doesn't chip easily.

Bottom Line:A great bike. It lasted me for 2 great years of raceing. Ff you are looking for a nice modrately priced bike this is the choice for you, but if you want a bike that can take anything and come back for more get the Klein. Strengths:Light weight frame, Hayes brakes, Tamer seat post, XT rear derailleur,
Weaknesses:Way to much Icon crap on it, no-name hubs, bontrager tires.
Similar Products Used:GT LTS-5
Bike Setup:Psylo race shock, King headset and hubs, Next LP crank, stock Hayes brakes
Bottom Line:After i got the bike and rode it for about 200 some miles, I decided I wanted to upgrade all the Icon parts on it, and the shock. So I bought a Rock Shox Psylo race with a Chris King headset, new bottom bracket with a Race Face Next LP crank, Chris King disc hubs with Mavic X618 rims, and my old shimano 858 pedals. Now i would say its a pretty sweet ride. Putting some of these new parts on it really lightened it up too. Over all a good bike but dont worry about buying new parts to upgrade the crapy Icon parts it will be worth it later when you are XC racing and you have better quality parts on it now.

Strengths:This bike has a narley frame and a put it through a lot.
I went off a 6 foot drop on to cement on this supa ligt rig and it hardley fliched.
Judy fork is near indestuctable the bike just has a dam nice feel
Weaknesses:Bontrager RE-1 clipless scare me they do not clear mud and are some times impossible to get out of if mudy.
Tires suck they don't hold at all they just slide. pick up some WTB mutano raptors the 2.4's pretty lite and worth it.
Rolf wheels: a little shaky but lite and pretty good for XC.
Cranks have chain rings that break leaft and right after two years of hard use my cranks stripped out. SCARY!!!

Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $1200.00
Purchased At:Evans Cycles
Strengths:Good frame and forks.
Good brakes and gears
Weaknesses:The other componentry just doesn't cut it, although I do agree that there have to be compromises at this price, especially with a reasonable fork and frame.
All the moving stuff wore out very quickly, the icon chainrings seem to be made of butter, and the bontrager saddle is a bit short and generally lacking.
The bearings in the Rolf Wheels gave up but I could not get any replacements, so I had to ditch them and the spokes always creaked. I would say that they were really good when they were in full working order.
Similar Products Used:Lots of road bikes, cyclo-cross bikes and a few non-suspension bikes... this is my first MTB
Bottom Line:Excellent first bike, I was in love with it for some time until it all started to wear out within a year... although that might be down to a relatively high milage.

I'm in the process of rebuilding it, keeping just the frame, forks, cranks and seatpin... I would say it was worth getting it for the frame alone then you can upgrade components as they wear out.

Bottom Line:this bike rocks! it will eat anything u throw at it, jumps drops, hills, anything. Its a rocket on the uphills, and on the downhills its just as good. Its got nimble handling, great for whipping around tight technical singletrack. The avid SD3s are sweet brakes the have really good stopping power, and they look sweet. This bike is definately the best in the bang for your buck catagory. Oh yeah, and the Judy race fork is a beast, nice and plush even for me, a 125 pound schoolboy. Go buy this bike NOW! Purchased At:Slightly Used thru MTB
Strengths:This is an update. Have used every weekend for last year. Loved the bike initially; still do but have made some low cost improvements that make bike better
Weaknesses:Bontrager seat: painful; Bontrager RE1 pedals potential broken ankle; Bontrager Jones tires didn't grip; ICON crank arm threads stripped(possibly my fault)
Similar Products Used:Trek 6000
Bike Setup:Stock except for WTB 98 seat; Panaracer Fire XC Pro tires; Sun ZuZu pedals; Shimano LX crankarm
Bottom Line:I put the Panaracer 2.1 on the front; the Bontrager Jones 2.1 on the back; the WTB 98 is comfortable; got rid of the RE1 pedals, replaced with Shimano 646 spd platform and did break my ankle; switched to the Sun ZuZu platform pedals-make giant difference on balancing over rocks/streams-seem fine going up and down. The ICON crankarm threads I may have stripped in changing pedals but the threads seemed soft. With this setup feel much more confidant going over rocks/streams and dowhnill-think it a great bike

Strengths:Very light and strong frame for an XC bike. A definit head turner in the trails... especially those Rolf rims. I've done just about everything with this bike and it's still with me. Components have been very good but I still want to upgrade. Can't go wrong with Rock Shox Judy Race with the All-travel system.
Weaknesses:Even though I love Rock Shox I had some problems but the boys at Rock Shox were good enough to help me out... no questions asked.
Similar Products Used:I've tried the Trek 7000, Specialized Stump Jumper and Rock Hopper... a couple of GTs and Giants but Trek just knows how to build there bikes.
Bike Setup:I stuck with the Judy's, the Bontrager AC Tires, and pretty much everything else. I switched to a Carbon/Titanium riser bar but switched back to the straight pipe cause the other one was too wide for narrow trails. Other than that it's pretty stock cause it kicks @ss!!
Bottom Line:My next bike is a Trek Fuel... not sure which one but Trek can consider it sold cause I want one. I'm in the process of buying a Trek VRX 200. Stick with Trek and you can't go wrong.

Strengths:Light weight for the money. Good fork. Climbs like the proverbial goat. Great USA bike. Prooves big companies get you big bang for the buck.
Weaknesses:Frame dents easily. Crank is kinda flexy. Grips are soft. Little short stem. Jones AC tires suck on the desert hardpack. The front just, will wash away. Ok on forest dirt.
Similar Products Used:New to MTB. Roadie for years.
Bike Setup:Stock, except I lobbed off some cheap bar ends. Never spend big bucks on parts that get the brunt on crashes. Panaracer Fire XC pros. Great tire gave tons more confidence. El-cheapo bar ends lobbed off to 3.5 inches.
Bottom Line:A very good first ride, for a first MTB race bike. Get a longer stem and flip it for a more aggresive climbing bike. After you wear out the tires find what works for you. The smaller bikes with a longer seat post really soak up lots of shock for a hardtail. 5 chillies for value and 4 for overall. The 4 is because nothing is perfect except my wife of 15 years.

Bottom Line:I compared this bike to: (1)Gary Fisher Paragon, (2)Klein Attitude Comp and (3)Specialized Rockhopper FS.

This bike was overall (frame, components, feel, and more fun to ride)better than the specialized (except that the specialized was cheaper). Thus I quickly eliminated the Sepcialized from my list.

I chose this bike over the Gary Fisher Paragon for a couple of reasons. (1)Both have almost identical components, and the Trek cost $300 less!! (2) both have double butted aluminum frames, and the trek costs less!! Now, I did like the frame geometry of the Gary Fisher, but it was not signigicant enough to warran the extra price. Moreover, the bike store did not seem to budge on the price of the Gary Fisher at all.

In comparision to the Klein, I must admit I really like the feel, the quality of construction and the shear beauty of the Klein a lot more. For the the deciding factor was price (I am a college student...there's only so much I can afford). The frame of the Klein seems much better than the trek, but the trek did have better components than the Klein, and was much cheaper.

Overall, I am very satisfied with the TREK 8000. It is fast as hell, a great climbing bike and comes with a great set of components in its price class. Looking back, there are not many other bikes that offer what it does for @$900. I highly recommend it!!!!!

Bottom Line:Fantastic value in a hardtail , I moved up from a 6000 to this 8000LT and have no regrets. Trek balanced the components very nicely with mostly XT , the Rock Shox Judy is a great XC shock with rebound dampening . The LT is nice for those all day trips , the hayes hydraulic disc brakes are awesome compared to V-brakes . If you are looking for a great hardtail the 8000 line is superb.

Strengths:The best thing about this bike is the geometry of the frame. This bike climbs like spiderman. I also like the Rolf wheels and the Bontrager Jones tires (I am on my 2nd set). If you ride a lot of rocky trails the tires grip like nothing else. The bottom line is I have beat the hell out this bike and it has held up great. If you want a quick responsive bike that handles fast and climbs incredible, then go get it.
Weaknesses:LX front derailleur, shift brake combo, and grips are low end along with the Icon crank. The seat looks good but if you put in 15 miles or more a day it kills your ass, get rid of it when buying the bike. Don't get me wrong the parts work ok(except the seat and grips) and are easily upgraded, which I have started doing.

It weighs in at just 23.5 lbs (mostly due to the SIDs). I am 5'10 and the medium frame fits me perfect. The frame is rigid and climbs easy. The downhills can be a little rough but that is why they call it a hardtail. It is a great ride and I highly recommend it!

Bottom Line:I was looking for a bike with a good frame and fork with the idea of upgrading the components as things broke. The first thing that went was the middle chainring. I didn't even hit anything, it just kept warping as fast as I un-warped it (I could actually bend it back pretty easily by hand). The store replaced it with a much better one free of charge (being under warrenty). I have done some decent hammering (including some downhilling) and this bike has taken everything I've given it. I love the geometry (I'm 5'10"). The Bontranger seat is also awesome. Just remember to keep alot of pressure in the tires and you'll have a blast.

Similar Products Used:'93 Cannondale M1200, '96 Gary Fisher Tassajara (upraded componentry)

Bottom Line:I have really enjoyed the nimble feel and great climbing ability of this bike. It has handled some pretty aggressive action and is fast. The wheels have been extremely durable and have withstood some pretty harsh slamming. I did change the pedals because of inconsistent releases. If you're in the market for a solid performing entry-level racer, give this bike a ride. It is a cross country bike so don't expect it to things it wasn't meant for.

By the way, I was driving down the rode the other day and I saw this fat old lady driving a car that looked a lot like mine. Man I couldn't believe it. I now hate my car because of that fat old lady, so much for Acura being any good. And while at the mall this fat dude had on shoes like mine. Why did I buy those shoes? I'm pissed; his socks had huge thick stripes and were pulled up to his knees. While playing racquetball I noticed this ugly old dude with an E-revolt 175 racquet just like the one I had. I wish my dealer had warned me about this scenario. I would have never bought that high-quality product if I knew that an ugly old guy would have one like it. Hopefully I won't notice any dorky, uncool, fat, or generally unfashionable person with a bike like mine. I want to stay cool! KORN RULZ! or whatever. Did I get it right?

Strengths:Well here we go! The frame is excellent, light, nice ride, and looks good. The Rolf wheels are amazing, and very durable. They should look like a pretzel by now but are as true as they were new. I really like the tires. They are good in all conditions except extreme mud. For my riding style there are great. The brakes have been fine as well as the shifters. The derailers have been operating flawlously, although I do keep on top of the maintenance and cleaning of them. I do know that if you let the gears get too dirty then you will get shifting problems. The seat took some getting use to but now I like it. I found it took a lot of time to set up and get use to the hardness. The bars are Ok but for me a riser bar is in the future. The Judy race has been a great ride and at 80 mm has not bottomed out. Mine has not has the squeaking noise as some have, but that is an easy fix in any case.
Weaknesses:The only problems so far is that if the pedals get extremly dirty then they are hard to clip in/out. Now I say extremly dirty, and up until that point they are fine. Is that a weekness of the pedal?? I have other makes do the same so I'm not blaming the pedals.
Bike Setup:Stock.
Bottom Line:I am really happy with this purchase. It had been a great bike and with good reliability. I looked at the 7000 when I bought this bike but I'm glad I bought the 8000. Besides my
girlfriend bought the 7000 shortly after me and I wouldn't want to ride a twin bike (ha-ha). By the way the 7000 is a super bike for the $.On my 8000 I can see myself replacing the bars for a riser type, along with the seatpost to possibly a suspended for day to day training, and switch back for race days. Other than that the bike has more than met my expectations. You owe it to your self to at least test drive one. For 2001 they have changed some of the components, but in my opinion not for the better. Well this is my 7 month report, and I will post in a year or so. Have fun and Happy Trails!

After the mentioned upgrades and slapping on a new saddle and pedals, this is one kick-ass ride. I use it for adventure racing, downhills, and XC, and it really does do well in each element. Bottom Line:this is a great bike. it is light and strong. the wheels are kind of funny and if you ride hard and weigh more than 130lbs. (I weigh 125), they won't last too long (my rear lasted a couple days). I have wheelie-dropped 5 foot drops and nothing broke, although the rear wheel got a flat spot and is out of true. The wheels are weird because if you lose some spoke tension their done. I would only use the wheels for races. I don't like the grips mine came with either. They are way to soft and you lose control too easily, and they flake off. I liked the judy race alot, but I got a sid for $25. The bb squeakes alot with the icon cranks and the race faces i got. A ton of the paint has come off, but it cant rust and i guess your losing some weight there. This bike is a great all around bike as well as a great deal. Bottom Line:This bike is the best value out there for the money. I paid $1500 canadian (no tax) for this bike and I know I won't have to do any major upgrading for awhile. Frame? Amazing Trek SLR aluminum. Fork? RS Judy Race. Wheels? Rolf Satellites. Other than these, might have to change some drivetrain stuff (cranks) and probably the headset -- LATER ON. What's on the bike now are quality components that pull their weight.
If you want a fast bike that climbs effortlessly and is very stable at speed (descending? - hug the frame and the bike becomes part of you), then Trek has your ride. If you want to spend more money and have to upgrade sooner, buy something else.

After one ride off road I learned this shock needs to be set for long travel, I nearly did an Endo after hitting a big root running diagonally on a slight descent. Those sweet brakes are slightly to blame, but the pedals actually saved my ass, I was able to dismount one leg instantly and keep from goin down painfully. Why is everyone bashing them??!?! Anyway, I'm stripping all the crappy stickers off this thing (they are all removable!) thinking of getting some huffy stickers, just to confuse people on the trail and reduce theft. Why doesn't anyone else do that? Huffy stickers are my next upgrade, same with adjusting shock for 4" of travel.

Strengths:I looked at this bike long and hard. Finally after watching the price go down all year in anticipation for the '01s, I picked up the 2000 8000 for a cool $1035. The bike is light, climbs well, and the Judy Race speaks for itself. The LX (with the XT rear deraileur) components work well.
Weaknesses:The Rolf Satellite rear wheel started wobbling after the first ride. The low spoke count is probably the reason. I must confess that I was jumping the bike over at Tuttle. I'm not too happy with the Bontrager tires--they slip on rocks real easy and are not much help in loose dirt. I had a hell of a time making it up hills at Mohican today. I'm not a big V-brake fan either.
Similar Products Used:I beat the snot out of an old Trek Antelope for about 10 years. Still rides well today, although the only original part left is the frame.

I have it cut to 20" right now (a little wider than my shoulders) which seems to make the bike more responsive.

I live in the Pisgah Natl Forest area where every trail includes a 1000+ foot ascent before you can even think about the downhill and this is why I love this bike-it lets you climb! The handling is good and the bike looks pretty cool also. My only concern is a thumb-print-sized indention on the downtube which has me questioning the aluminum's durability. In any event a great bike for the buck for those of us who earn our downhill!

Bottom Line:This is the best bike you will get for your money. I've ridden about 50 bikes looking for a replacement when my '98 Trek 8000 got jacked. I still came back to Trek for the new one. Although I've heard that the chainrings kind of suck, I haven't had problems. The wheelset rocks, and it's the big thing that sets this bike apart from the Gary Fisher Paragon. Other than that and frame geometry, the two are nearly identical. The frame on this (at least, my '98) took a wicked beating with no problems except for minor scratches. That included it being pushed down a flight of about 30 steps by a stupid drunk and landing a 10 foot drop onto hardpack and into a tree (sans rider). Do yourself a favor and get a new saddle though.

Bottom Line:A great deal. While shopping, I kept coming back to this bike. That price (got mine for $950) with the frame and components is just incredible. The ride quality is high as I have had no problems with the alum frame and it is very stiff. Essentially, it is an LX drive-train grouping with a XT RD, Icon stem, bars, crank, seat post, Avid 2.0 brakes and Rolf Satellite wheels. Usually, you tend to want to upgrade something immediately, but this bike works so well together, I won't upgrade until something is broken.

Like most, I did not get to take the bike out on a trail prior to purchasing. However, I found myself laughing outloud when I finally got there -- it's that fun to ride.

Bottom Line:This bike is an excelent deal for the money. Even stock it is overly capable for competitive racing while still being an economical choice for the weekend warior. IF have upgraded mine b/c I work at a bike shop and can do so for very cheap.
If you are concidering this bike also look at the Gary Fisher Paragon. Trek and Fisher are a joint company and these two bikes are almost exactly the same. The only real difference is that the fisher has a different paintjob (white and Orange) and a different geometry. The fisher has a shorter stem making it more sutable for riders with shorter arms by preventing riders from having to position their body over the front tire which would diminish the riders ability to control the bike through single track.
Both bikes are great. Test ride both and find which one is right for you.

Bottom Line:great bike for the money if you ride often enough, although i hate to buy from the biggest bike company that really couldn't care less about its customers. the geometry is different from most, but helps on climbs and descents. you can save weight by changing the saddle and wheels. lighter wheels would relly make this bike feel fast. the rolf wheels don't look so tough, but they've stayed true so far thanks to the heavier rim. the icon handlebar should be wider to make you feel more in control. the icon chainrings are a bit shady, but the cranks are pretty stiff. the bontrager ac tires are great when it's dry out, but are dangerous in mud and over wet stuff.

Bottom Line:I'd ridden my Specialized for over a year always whining to my bike shop mechanics that it felt too big (17"). "No no", they insisted it looked right. I kept whining and tried shorter stems. It still felt too big and if this was suspension (tuned all the way down) I could easily go back to my rigid frame.
Then I read about Women Specific Designs in Bicycling mag. "Built for the long legged short torso woman" Sounded like me. Research didn't bring up many reviews on the WSD but since the other brands were out of my price range I decided to try the Trek. Tested a 6500 (17") and fell in love. It fit! It really fit! And it was responsive. I rode uphill and down, over rocks, roots, streambeds and snow (the Adirondacks in April), apologized for the muddy bike I brought back in and ordered the 8000 (better components).
I turned 50(!!) in January and this will be my third season of racing cross country. Whether I continue racing or not I feel I've found a bike that I can enjoy for years.

***I upgraded the Rolf Satellite rims to Rolf Dolomite (a $100 upgrade, which is worth it because you get better hubs, bearings, and skewers.
Bottom Line:
An AWESOME BIKE FOR THE MONEY!!!! Do yourself a favor and AT LEAST take this bike for a test ride. This bike is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT from last year's 8000 model. The new "racing" geometry has a longer top tube, which puts more weight on the front wheel, enabling you to climb more easily. It also helps to stabilize the downhills.
In comparison to the other bikes I tried----just my opinion---- better at SLOWER speeds (for technical riding) than all bikes I tested. By this I mean that you could ride this bike at a snail's pace, and not get the feeling that you were going to fall over, like the cannondales.(the cannondales DO have a good shock. It tracks very well, just as advertised, but the bike is just too expensive for the component mix (this applies to both cannondales I tried out.) The Trek 8000 is also very stable on fast downhills. I can't wait to try this bike out on some fast fire roads.
The Specialized Stumpy M2 was not as responsive as the Trek, IN MY OPINION...but it was still a pretty nice bike.
This is my first experience with clipless pedals, and I must say, they make a HUGE difference. If you haven't tried them----PLEASE DO!!!--- They only took me a few minutes to get used to. I haven't fallen because of them---YET...maybe by my next review I'll be cussing them, but so far, so good.
Overall, the Trek 8000 is a GREAT value!!!! I bought the bike for $1089 with the Rolf Dolomite wheelset upgrade. BEFORE YOU BUY ANY OTHER BIKE IN THE $1000-1200 dollar price range, TAKE THIS BIKE FOR A TEST RIDE!!

P.S. No matter what bike you get, make sure that you are COMPLETELY satisfied with your bike BEFORE BUYING!!! A bike is investment!!! Most of us don't have the benefit of getting bikes for free. Choose wisely!
Now GO RIDE!!!!
