Favorite Trail:Anything technical
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $100.00
Purchased At:Newspaper Ad
Strengths:Looks, components, price
Weaknesses:None yet..
Similar Products Used:Nothing similar..
Bike Setup:16.5 size - Manitou fork, LX front and shifters, XT rear, Avid brakes, Cool Yellow frame
Bottom Line:OK, I was looking for a bike to get my wife into mtb riding.. I had her demo the Specialized Myka and Trek 3900, 4300 and 4500 WSD's. I was about to pick up a 4300WSD and found this in the local paper. I was unsure if the geometry would work for her, but non-the-less for a C-note how could I go wrong.

So for the $100 initial investment the bike was in OK condition. The frame has a few scratches on it, but nothing that effects perfomance (and my wife doesn't care) I changed the rear derailleur with a new XT ($55), New Sram 951 chain ($13), new brake pads ($12), new grips ($3)and switchewd the stem to a shorter one, so for under $200 This is a great bike and much better components than she would have got. As for the geometry, between the stem and seat adjustments, that is a non issue. Only downside is now the set up is way too small for me to ride it.

Trek built a winner here, at least for year 2000...

Strengths:This bike is very durable and easy to use in tight places. It is light and designed very well. It is an awesome bike to climb with.
Weaknesses:The bike is equipped with Rock Shocks and they suck. Not much travel at all. Also I tried to put a seat quick release on the bike and it was impossible to find one at a local dealer, even where I purchased the bike didnt have one. I had to order it specially for this frame. That always sucks.
Bottom Line:Overall it is a good bike but like every other bikes the manuafacturer gets money some way or another

Price Paid: $900.00
Purchased At:Granada Cyclery in St. Charles
Strengths:Climbing and acceleration were top notch; very stiff tail. Handled exceptionally well. Good componentry. Odd but cool bright yellow and purple paint job.
Weaknesses:Icon crank, Bontrager tires (although they were pretty good in sand), Bontrager clipless broke in a few weeks
Similar Products Used:Trek 8000, Klein Attitude Comp
Bike Setup:Stock, except I replaced the handlebar because I bent it up on a sic drop off (admittedly it was a good yard sale), put some specialized clipless on and changed to Michelin Comp and occassionally Conti Twister Pros
Bottom Line:Bang for the buck, there was no topping this machine. It did well; I only wish I hadn't traded it for an 8000 a few years ago. I wish I still had this bike.

Favorite Trail:anything with dirt
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Strengths:this bike is a frickin' steal of a deal for the price that they were bening sold for... like some other people have said, instead of blowing a wad on a nice derailer trek spread the dough around very nicely and put together a very competent spec!!!!
Weaknesses:one thing that felt awkward is the long feel in the top tube, just means that you have to be more aware of your body position on the downhill stuff, as mentioned above if I really had to complain there was a lot of flex in the cranks and the components could have been lighter and nicer but I am really starting to dig for stuff to complain
Similar Products Used:merlin echo, rocky vertex, specialized s works ( stump jumper and rockhoper )kona hei hei
Bike Setup:stock
Bottom Line:for the kind of price range that this bike fit into, it was an absolutely incredible deal... you get decent components, a solid, no bs frame with some standard proven geometry. and a cool paint job that you won't see on many bike ( mine was the flake yellow)... however you have to keep in mind that it is an aluminum bike and although it has barely any detectable flex in the frame it has absolutely no give either ( none of the resiliency of the newer alu frames or steel or ti ) but we are talking about an alu bike and as far as this bike goes it is awesome, it cooks on the single track is a capable downhiller and will get you through some technical single track... I would say this bike is probably one of if no the best bikes for those of you whom are the weekend warrior, or just want to dip your feet into the world of mtbing... you can get this bike feel what you like and don't like and then you have a wicked ass frame to build up if you wan't or you can keep it the way it is and you have a great bike

Strengths:quiet, stable, economical, out of the box racer.
Weaknesses:sloppy shifting on the rear der. Bontrager's not the best in mud
Similar Products Used:giant rincon, specialized rockhopper
Bottom Line:The bottom line is this:

There is NO bike, i mean NO bike better for under a $1000, and probably better that some bikes that cost $1500-1700. This is the best setup you can get for a $1000 no question. If you're looking to upgrade and you can only spend a $1000, stop searcing the websites and reading the magazines, this is the only bike. Too bad Trek realized they had such a bargain racer that they pulled it from production. i have a 2000 with the metal flake yellow frame and cobalt decals.....sweet. I will ride it forever.

Price Paid: $750.00
Purchased At:Saginaw Bike Barn
Strengths:Great bike for the buck. Has the frame of the Trek 8000 just without the name. Can take pretty good abuse. It is a sturdy and liteweight bike. 25 pounds is what it weighs in at. Definently the best bike for under a grand. 00' model is definently a better model cause in 01' they downsized it to the Trek 6700 which in my opinion is not as a good a bike for the money you'll pay for it. This bike is a great bike for beginning racers.
Weaknesses:It's a little heavy in the back. XT rear derailer sucks at shifting in mud but is smooth as ever all the same. Judy XC shocks are great but the adjustment doesnt work as well as it should.
Similar Products Used:Trek 6700, Specialized Rockhopper, Gary Fischer Tassajara
Bike Setup:Judy XC front suspension, Icon crank, Icon seatpost, Bontrager tires and wheels, Bontrager FS+10 seat, Cateye Enduro 2, Avid 2.0 V-brakes, LX front components, XT rear components, Icon handelbars, Trek 7000zx frame.
Bottom Line:Awesome bike, take a look at it if youre a rider on a budget, not made anymore but you can still find them. Trek makes a great frame.

Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $900.00
Purchased At:Old Towne
Strengths:Ride like aluminum is supposed to. Very responsive, Light, durable. Great for the serious rider on a serious budget.
Weaknesses:The shifting sucks when muddy (albeit this is more due to the 9 rear gears, what ever happened to the 7?), toeclips are second rate and crank has flex.
Similar Products Used:Trek 930, Canondale f900, '93 trek 7000, specialized rockhopper/stumpjumper
Bike Setup:stock, with flipped stem, brake stiffeners
Bottom Line:This is a very light, fast, well built rig. I weigh over 200 lbs and ride very aggresively and it has continued to hold up (except for those damn chain rings). I would recommend it to anyone who liks the stiffness and response of traditional aluminum and is more accustomed to the older geometry of the longer top tube. Hands down the best ride under a grand

Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $650.00
Purchased At:Rotations, in Southampton
Strengths:A great bike. Especially for the price I paid for it. very cut and dry componants, easy to get used to and learn on.
Weaknesses:broke the chain 3hrs after i bought it. next week broke the pivot on the front derailleur. and the front brake went crappo on me. all of this was before i even hit a single trail.
Similar Products Used:I demo'd a Cannondale Scalpal 1000. The price was right for the trek though.
Bike Setup:stock except for the front/rear T.H.E. fenders, trek bar-nds, and a bontreager seat.
Bottom Line:I grew up in the mountains of British Columbia, the Rockies and the Cacade mountian ranges have served as backyards at many different times in my young life. So when I went to look at bikes, even on this flat island, my heart was drawn to the MTB section at my local Church...Er...Bike Shop. This bike is great dispite the constant breaks. I would suggest this bike to anyone who is just getting into the sport, or for someone who wants to add a hard-tail to their collection and don't want to spend too much. It is also very easy to work on, I have been riding for only a couple of monthes and have already fixed minor things with ease. It isn't by any means "Top-Of-The-Line" but you get an excellent bang for the buck.

Weaknesses:Tires get rid of them buy some Hutchinson Gold pythons or Alligator 2.0's. Get rid of The Icon Stem, cranks, and handlebars. the seat post is optional I still have mine
and it still works fine. Also git rid of the peice of crap bottom bracket and get a Real ti bb.Manitou needs to address the SX preload adjuster, it has stripped out on me 3 times.

Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $850.00
Purchased At:Goodales Bike and Ski
Strengths:Practically the whole bike is amazingly good.
Weaknesses:First of all, the cockpit is a little bit too long for me. I feel the need to reach a lot, and comfort is a little bit of an issue. I might switch to a riser and shorter stem. Also, i would have rather gotten avid levers rather than the LX. Avids are more powerful and have better modulation. And last, the Deore front derailleur is a piece of ass. They should have stocked it with an LX.
Similar Products Used:2000 Trek 6500, 2001 Trek 6700, and 2000 Gary Fisher Big Sur
Bike Setup:pretty much stock, but probably not for much longer. The only thing that i have replaced to this point is the grips. I have changed them to Profile Designs. I am looking to get a riser, a shorter stem, and maybe some avid levers, possibly some new pedals, seemingly as how many people have experianced breakage.
Bottom Line:For the price you pay for this bike, it is an incredibly good value. The Icon parts themselves are not the strongest, but all together, they make up a pretty good component set. you cant wish for much more when buying a bike in this price range. The frame is amazing being as how is 7000 series aluminum, and comes with a life time warranty. It holds up well to the abuse mtb, and even a little mild freeride.
As far as ride goes, this thing is super solid. It climbs like a mad mofo, and descends just as good. Some people think that the ride is harsh, but you get what you pay for. This is a snappy hardtail. Little or no flex is the name of the game. This has taken everything from cross country, to freeride, and has performed strongly no matter what i do with it.
The manitou sx front shock is perfect for me, and i need it on the lightest setting to receive a plush ride. It has very little flex, i am 135 lbs, and i have never bottomed out. I have had no problems with it.
Another thing that is not a major issue, but it is still sometimes a piss off, is the durability of the paint. It seems like my white paint cant hold up to even a little torture.
Another issue that many people complain of, that has not been much of an issue with me has been the re-1 pedals. To me, they have been nothing but good. I have beaten them on rocks, and to this day, work as good as the day i got them.
Overall, this is an incredibly strong bike. Every part that it comes with is not the strongest that it could be, however Trek did a great job with the parts selection. Rather than giving it one or two high end products, they spread the money around to create a well rounded bike that does what it is supposed to. It can be upgraded to your liking and become pretty much anything you want it to. I am very dissapointed that Trek pulled this bad-ass off of the market however because it was an amazingly good deal. It is too bad, because if you did not get the 2000 model, you get stuck with the now 6700, a pretty shi*ty(freakin dumb ass censor thing) compliment to this thing. Whether you are just a cross country rider, or maybe even a mild freerider, this bike is one of the best deals out there. You break something, just replace it and this thing becomes even more fun to ride. What more could you want in a bike. In conclusion, this is probably the best bike that i have ever tried, and i am damn glad that i bought it.

Strengths:great bike for goin UP hills, very fast and light. fork is great for cross country, it takes away the small bumps and rattles. This is a great XC bike, buy it if you ride fast and in the general direction of up. components are great, brakes are very good, tires are great for packed dirt.
Weaknesses:don't buy this bike if you like down more. The reach is really long, no riser bar and i would rather have a marzocchi -- great for goin faster but it sux for doin technical or downhillish stuff. tires are no good for logs and the like

Bottom Line:Great value. I was ready to spend $1000 and was thrilled when I ran across this gem. Used the extra $$ to buy the clipless shoes I needed.

I went from riding a 10-year old Mount Shasta Pachanga with toe clips and no suspension to this. Unbelievable difference. No wonder my buddies were always leaving me in the dust. I can climb hills much better now, I feel like I have more control over the bike and can do more technical downhills. I'm a much better biker now.

I don't know what made the difference: the bike or the shocks & pedals but I love it.

The paint job is also pretty hot.

This is the perfect bike for a weekend warrior like me. Wish I'd had this years ago. I was wondering why I didn't see the 7000 in the shops anymore...Trek figured out they were too good of a bargain and dumped them.

This bike can ride with bikes costing much more. The level of performance is unbelievable! You decide how you'll use this bike. Either as a cross-country bike or race bike, it makes no difference because of the bike's sweet geometry and ride characteristics. There is no wasted energy here at all, just pedel and it moves out. Strengths:This bike can fly! It works great on the downhill sections, flies through the tight singletracks, and is great for steep climbing. The shock, manitou SX (80mm travel) has taken everything i can throw at it. The tires that came with it are really nice too.
Weaknesses:The most annoying thing about this bike is that stupid little plastic piece that goes between your rear casset and your spokes! it will rub your spokes in half if ya dont do something about it. I cant imagine what the brains at trek were thinking when they put that thing on there. Also, if you dont want to be bothered by the pounding of the bumps on your rump, you might want to consider a suspension seat post or a dual suspension.

Bike Setup:Still all stock except for added bar-ends. New r.derailleur after pretzeled first one. Tires to be replaced any day now after only 1 year of use on rocky singletrack.
Bottom Line:I am frankly amazed that Trek has pulled this model from the market. You'd think that they could make up in quantity what they lose by selling such a great component package for such a low price. I wanted a dependable component set on a mid-priced bike as I entered the MTB scene last year and got exactly what I wanted with this bike. Looking forward to many years with my baby and upgrading everything to XT as needed...it's worth it.

Favorite Trail:Don't really have one :)
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $800.00
Purchased At:Tailwinds in Grayslake, IL
Strengths:This bike is really nice for the money. It has a very responsive and smooth ride both on and off the trail. The whole bike is far lighter than my Schwinn Moab 3 ever was. I found it interesting that the whole bike is outfitted with bontrager components. Including the tires which seem to be more "very general purpose" than actual mountain bike tires. They don't do well in sharp corners or mud. As far as the derailleurs are concerned, i've experienced no problems as of yet. The shifting is very smooth and precise. The brakes feel good and I've had no problem in that department either. The handlebar and stem are'nt bad but i've found the bar to be a little short. Bar ends are a good idea on this bike. The Manitou fork is of decent quality and absorbs the bumps fairly well. At least it's easy to adjust. Of course there are far better forks out there and this is one area Trek could cut costs. The fork is not bad but could be better. I got rid of the stock clipless pedals and installed my ever faithfull Ritcheys.
Weaknesses:Saddle, stock clipless pedals suck
Similar Products Used:Schwinn Moab 2, Moab 3
Bike Setup:Other than pedals, it's stock.
Bottom Line:I would recommend this bike to anyone who wants a serious mountain bike but cannot afford to spend over a $1000 or so.

Strengths:good all around bike for the price. I compared it to the other bikes in it's price range and found it to be the best fit for me. Components are about the same or better for its price range.
Weaknesses:Tires are pretty bad, like others i have had front derauiller problems. Nothing major. I already replaced the bottom bracket and crank. Bottom bracket went bad after 6 months, so replaced both with a splined truvativ unit. Much better.
Bike Setup:stock except for hutchison pythons, truvativ stylo team crank and bottom bracket, and a selle italia flight seat.
Bottom Line:Great bike although now discountinued. Not sure why. At first had some trouble with the bontrager pedals, but oiled them and now after a year, work fine. Seat is not so good, so replaced that as well. Tires are pretty bad for cross country action, but good for more technical riding. The bike is a great bike and wouldnt hesitate to buy it again. Just had to change out a few things to suit my needs, but thats the way with any bike.

Strengths:Most of the components are awesome, especially for the price of the bike. Great on climbs, decent on the DH. Holds up very well under extreme conditions (I've taken my share of headers.) Bontrager wheels a definate strength.
Weaknesses:I've had nothing but trouble with my front derailleur. It has a very hard time shifting to the small gear when climbing. Its been in for service on that part several times.

Strengths:EVERYTHING!!! This bike has it all. I did research for two months before I purchases this bike, and I couldn't be happoer. I am a very critical person, not someone who will say it's great just because I bought it and I won't be made a fool if it sucks. I would tell you if it sucked. This bike has nothing but top-notch components, is very light, well worth the price ($850), and not being made any more, go figure. The bike that Trek makes now that is comparable (the 6700) does not have half the componets that this one does. If you see one (they only come in white and yellow) you had better grab it, becuase Trek quite makeing it. I guess they decided that they could build a bike that had crappier components and charge the same price. Good marketing, bad for consumers. Strengths: Price, Weight, Quality, Ride, Comfort.
Weaknesses:It has none, except that my saddle gets a little hard after about 10 miles, but who's doesn't.
Bike Setup:Cateye Enduro2, Onza Barends, Kore Lite3D Stem, Cane Creek Headset.
Bottom Line:I think I have already said it all. I can't stress enough, if you see one of these, consider yourself lucky. If you buy one of these, consider yourself one of the few, proud, and smart consumers who found the one-in-a-million deal on a bike that you'll never have a chance at again!

Strengths:XT Rear,LX Front, Manitou SX (good suspension for average build), Avid cantilevers have great stopping action, but this bike is also disc-ready for all-weather riding. Lots of flash with the cool yellow and blue paint job.
Weaknesses:Bontrager seat needs some getting used to. A riser bar may be a good upgrade since the stock one has a poor angle particularily for mounting lights.
Similar Products Used:Test rode Kona and Stumpjumper full suspension. The Kona felt really sloppy and committed me to a hard-tail. The Stumpjumper felt more stiff but still didn't fit as good as this Trek.
Bottom Line:This is a great entry-level bike that gives good value for your dollar. The components are solid and the frame is awesome. I took it to a Ski-hill in August and held my own with the downhill bikes (for the most part). I have had a few nasty spills and the bike has needed only minimal adjustments and nothing has broken yet. Ride hard or go home! When you buy it, get your shop to check for grease in the pedals. My shop has found that some leave shipping with a poor grade of grease, if any, which caused one of my pedals to start to stiffen. I can't praise this bike enough! It is a great XC bike for climbing but is solid enough for the occasional challenging descent. Handbuilt, good components, great frame, great price!

Weaknesses:I've had some problems with the front derailluer that I had to fix. The shock lost a cap and has some oil leakage from the top. That usually happens after a rough ride. Strengths:Great aluminum frame. Stong/Light bontrager wheels. Dependable fork.
Weaknesses:Icon components.
Bike Setup:Stock, but not for long.
Bottom Line:First off I have the 99 model but I want people to read this review. When I bought the bike in September of 99 I had been out of biking for a while and wanted a new ride. I mainly bought the bike for the frame, but it came with great components.

It's one year later and this bike has rocked. I'm pretty big, 6-1 200 pounds, and ride fairly hard, though I'm not chucking my meat of any five foot drops. I crash a lot, probably because my seat is too high and I ride too fast for my own good. The frame is stiff, most of the flex is in the crank I've found, but nothing a new Race Face LP won't fix. I've probably put close to 2000 hard miles on the bike, combo of communting to school/work (we are talking 25+ miles each way), free riding, training, chasing cute girls. The myth is true, it does rain a lot in Seattle so the bike has see plenty of mud and rain. The Judy shock has required very little maintanance through all this abuse. The wheels have held up well, though I'm moving to disc brakes this winter or I'll just eat through wheels. I've only had to do minor trueing about two times.

THE BOTTOM LINE: I recommend this bike to anyone, but especially someone who can't afford a grand or more on a new ride right now. Comparing the frame to the SLT frame there is like a 50 gram difference. 50 grams in nothing. When you have the mula for better components, just upgrade this excellent frame and you'll have a sweet light stiff ride. Sure it won't say oclv on the side, but who cares.
Hats off to Trek!

Weaknesses:Bearings came loose after two weeks of hard riding, chain rings loosened up as well. Front derailleur rubs and needs adjusting every other week. Nothing major.
Similar Products Used:Trekie to begin with. Fell in love with it on first ride.
Bike Setup:Bontrager barends, other than that great-out-of-box performance.
Bottom Line:This bike is actually my fourth purchase in mountain biking. By far, it's the best I've seen/owned to date in the price range. The weight was hard to get used to in begining because I was used to riding tanks around the country side and getting burned out. I had to learn how to pace myself and last longer as I go uphill. I would pop up the front with every pedal. Yellow/purple coloring is a great combination. Brakes are great. The seat is a bit hard but for the overall weight figure, I can live with it. I had ridden the bike really hard the first 2 months of it's life with me to break it in and it's stood up and surpassed my expectations. It's had much less damage than I've sustained. I've cracked three ribs and gone through two helmets since I've purchased it and besides a few paint scrapes, it's as good as new. The tires are like octopus arms in the mountain climbing aspect. Cross country is phenomenal handling but personally prefer to take this beast up and down mountains because it just loves to stretch it's wings.

This bike was a replacement to a stolen bike. It was the best thing to happen to me getting that bike stolen.

This bike is pefect for beginner and advanced alike. Weaknesses were easily remedied with a tune up. Strengthes are basically the entire bike as a whole. It's very well put together, solid frame working and components rip. Trek has never let me down and this is a shining example of why my faith in them is unquestioned.

I did quite a bit of research before I bought and I really don't think you can get a better hard-tail for the money. Personally I will change the seat out and the front drive train will go as well in favor of an XT set-up. The bike looks great as well. The brakes are excellent. The tires (stock) shed mud really well but don't grip mud well and you really have to get back for traction up steep stuff. Tires seem inordinately slippery on wet roots. The bike is tough. If you want a great bike that is set up well and you want to spend less than a thousand and you don't want a full suspension bike, I truly believe that this is the one. 5 chilis for value, 5 chilis for the bike itself. If you want a GREAT bike for the $$$ look no further. This bike can ride with bikes costing much more. The level of performance is unbelievable! You decide how you'll use this bike. Either as a cross-country bike or race bike, it makes no difference because of the bike's sweet geometry and ride characteristics. Is it possible to give this bike a HIGHER RATING than 5?

Strengths:Too many: light (21 lbs), very stable with low BB, handling, climbing, descending, ride, steep stuff, you name it, it can handle it.
Weaknesses:low BB (compared to other hardtails) tends to clip more on logs and rocks, but makes it very stable, no biggie.

Bottom Line:Great bike! I wouldn't swap it for anything else! Nothing else I've tried rides like it: Litespeeds, GT's, Specialized's. Maybe it's beacause it has wierd geometry, but I love it! I managed to drop the weight down considerably from stock thanks to higher-end components. Strengths:The bike is very responsive and feels like an extension of me. I love riding it. I climb like a goat on this thing. I have beat it and the frame doesn't really even shudder. I like the Manitou SX but may upgrade next year. Bontrager Superstock Rims are steady.
Weaknesses:I have had the bottom bracket loosen up on me. In addition, I think the chain rings bent quite easily. My front derailleur will rub if I don't give it a little extra room. In addition I had a front hub go bad on me. This thing was loose from the beginning and they tightened it up and about 2 months later scraping noises. Took it to a different shop. I think the assembly was bad from the get go. The LBS said they don't take them apart to verify assembly before delivery. Is it Trek, is it LBS? The assembly left alot to be desired. Don't like the Jones tires and will upgrade soon. Ripped the back of the FS+10 seat early on so it is gone.
Similar Products Used:None really. This is what I wanted.
Bike Setup:Specialized Body Geometry Seat. Specialized Team Computer.
Bottom Line:This is a good bike. The original assembly left alot to be desired. Who is to blame? Not me. Blame LBS? They delivered the thing out of adjustment. They blamed Trek. I blame both. Trek should not deliver loose hubs and bottom brackets to their dealers. The dealers should earn my hard earned $$ and deliver a well adjusted bike.

This bike is great to make you go to the next level. I was not getting anywhere past intermediate riding with my 93 MB-6. I have more confidence and speed than ever. If you are intermediate and want more this bike is for you.

All in all. Get one. I have not heard anyone else with these troubles. Maybe I am too tough on it. Not.

Weaknesses:The seat is not too great, the right pedal broke on me after the third ride, but was promptly replaced, the rear derailier is a little finikey (I might not have it adujusted right)
Similar Products Used:Almost all in the same price range (under $1000) have been rideing an off brand k-mart piece of junk.
Bike Setup:Stock, with waterbottle holder, and replaced pedals, new treds,
Bottom Line:Wow! What a great bike, Ive only been seriously mountian biking for a few months when I decided It is super fun and to upgrade. This bike was defanately the right choice. I almost bought the Gary Fischer Big Sur but didn't because they didn't have the right size and it would have been a couple of weeks before the next shipment. My friend did buy one, I tried rideing it, it was a very similar bike, a little better climbing, but not nearly as solid feeling. before I bought this bike I was a begener biker, after the first ride this bike made me an intermediate. The weight is incredible, I don't know where other people got 24lbs, the real weight is 27lbs, the bike shop wieghed it before I left, but it still feels super light, (he also told me that many bike companies advertize a much lower weight, sometimes as much as three to four pounds) I got the perl white one, it is super cool looking, the chain whip on the back is a little bad, the perl coating is coming off on the chain stay, but underneith is white, and you can hardly tell. Super bike great for going up, good geometry, coming down, wow, this bike is awesome, it took me a couple of rides to break in the fork, but once I did it is amazing how well it works, super plush, the breaks work great, they lock when I want them to, and stick when I want, it is amazing how well this bike preforms. I havn't had any problems with the components they work perfectally. What a great bike!

Bottom Line:well, if you're getting into racing, look no farther. Excellent entry level racer. I have had this thing for 3 months and love it!!! It stood up to my abuse at the 24 hours of Adrenalin at Devil's Head. the stock single digit brakes wear the pads unevenly so I replaced them, and the teeth on the Big ring of the ICON Onyx crank tended to bend too easily, so I got rid of that too. The stock seat numbs my parts (Bontrager FS+10 Race.......most I've seen have the FS 2000 saddle which has gel and kicks ass) But anyways, it's all the bike I need right now. Favorite Trail:how's that?
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Strengths:it's a '91, purchased new in '91
Weaknesses:difficulty in changing tubes (araya rims?); chainsuck under sloppy conditions
Similar Products Used:diamondback (various)
Bike Setup:lx, if i recall; stock
Bottom Line:had it since '91. my 3rd MTB. does more need to be said? only things not replaced have been seat, seat post, bars, frame.(fork/headset replaced, went with shocks, out of choice, not necessity). i take full responsibility for wearing things out.

judging from reviews here, the quality not only remains but improves with time. if there were some way i could break this thing, i'd get another.

Strengths:Wow! Such a well balanced and responsive frame.. It has inspired tons of confidence in my riding.. Manitou SX fork.. And at a great price!
Weaknesses:The seat.. Or is that just my sensitive butt...
Similar Products Used:Test rode Brodies, GF, Specialized... This one was home as soon as I put it on..
Bike Setup:Stock
Bottom Line:Exactly what I needed.. My riding has improved dramatically in only a few rides.. What's this about weight?? I guess you didn't ride my old bike! Highly recommended for everyone from beginner to advanced. It took me from stuck at intermediate to advanced just by clipping in.

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Strengths:-Great Frame
-LX Drivetrain
-Good Shock (Manitou Sx)
Weaknesses:-The Hard-as-a-Christmas-Fruitcake Seat
-Nothing else as of yet
Bike Setup:Brand new Yellow 7000 w' Ritchey logic WCS Ti pedals
Bottom Line:Wow! I love this bike. I just got it and haven't logged too many miles on it so far but I just love this bike. It is so much better than my last bike (Dare I say that word (Huffy) Ouch! that hurt) It is lighter than my road bike and it rides much better. I read the reviews for this bike before I bought it and man, they were right on! This is an excellent bike for people just getting into racing (like myself) and it is a great buy. This bike is better than some bikes costing $250 more than this, so if it is even a possible choice, go for it!....the bike is well worth it.

Too bad the rating system goes only to 5! Five roadkill dinners it is!

Bottom Line:My Trek 6500 got stolen a couple years ago and I wanted to get back into mountain biking. I liked the feel of the full xt hardtails with Al frames but didn't want to spend over $1k.
I didn't even read the reviews on this bike until after I test rode it. I totally agree. I can't tell the difference between this bike and ones twice as expensive.
I'm picking up this bike later this week. I can't wait to take it out on the trails. Awesome job Trek!

The bike goes beyond my ability yet is forgiving. I think it is a bike for both the beginner to pro racer. Viva la trek!!!, I mean god bless america.

Strengths:I have raced everthing under the sun (and moon) and I can't believe this bike and its setup! I am a believer now in Onyx and bontrager. The wheels-A+ Shock-A Frame-A++++
Weaknesses:it dosen't cost over a thousand dollars making you think something is to good to be true here.
Similar Products Used:everrthing except gf, and schwinn.
Bike Setup:stock I may change out shifter pods, shimano needs a little help in this area.
Bottom Line:Hmm where to start. The geometry of this bike is amazing and balanced for a hardtail. I have beat this bike to death and it laughs at me (trust me I can rag on a bike) I am still trying this bike out but love it so far. The yellow rocks!! The manitou fork is amazing for considering the price range. Any other racer who cuts down this bike is brainwashed into some camp of thought (gee i have to spend over $2000 dollars to get a decent bike)I worry trek may rise the price on this baby once they find out what they have going. My Trek 8000 cant take the verticals like this baby. The frame may seem a little stiff but is solid and well balanced that i dont mind. it may not be a cadilac its more like a hummer- but isn't that what you really want on the trail anyway? 5 flamin turds (i would go higher if i could)

Bottom Line:Just a kick ass bike. I've tried euro trash bikes for much more money and don't think you can beat the durability of this frame. And yes it is butted but this in my opinion has been perfected by trek. I still like my trek carbon but cant't say this is close "for a fraction of cost"

Bottom Line:Like many other reviewers here, I did my research. My old MB3 was stolen, so I tried everything, hard tails, full suspension, everything. And this one is a winner. Folks, it can't be beat for the price ( I paid $825). This baby rocks! Only a pro racer would need more. It is light, responsive, an agile climber, great brakes, wonderful fork, a joy to ride. It needed only some minor adjustments after the first 100 miles. And the yellow metalflake is a real eye-catcher. You will not go wrong.

Strengths:Everything. I can't say enough good about this bike. It is incredibly fast and responsive, almost reading your mind!! Very light and well balanced. The component mix is great for the price. The yellow has to be seen to believe!!
Weaknesses:hmmm-none.

Bottom Line:Incredible value. I did a lot of research before buying and this baby is a dream. More bang for your dough than anything else and more bang in performance than many others costing much more. I like the Manitou sx, it is soo good it does what a good fork should do -make you forget it, and the bumps are there! If you are serious about biking, have some money but not rich, this is for you. If you are a casual less aggressive rider, this may be overkill.

Strengths:Frame and component group. The ride is very smooth and it climbs well.
Weaknesses:The only thing that could be is the crank set, but I'm comparing that too a stumpjumper comp, so there really are no weaknesses
Similar Products Used:Trek 6500, Stumpjumper Comp, GT Avalanche, Klein Attitude comp
Bike Setup:1999 Marzocchi z2 Bam front suspension. Azonic riser bars and the rest is stock
Bottom Line:This bike is awesome. I bought it because of it's low cost and it's looks, but after riding it for about 6 months I'm glad I made the choice to purchase it. You really can't buy a better bike for the money and the components that you get. The suspension that I upgraded too definitely helps, but if you compare what you get with the 7000, with what you get with the other expensive bikes, this seems like the bike to buy. This bike handles and feels great. After trying the stumpjumper comp two months before, I really wanted something that felt as good and after trying the 7000, I was hooked. Like I said before, for the price you pay you can't beat it. For a beginner the price tag might be a little too much, but if you have the money and want the quality, the 7000 is an excellent choice. I give it 5 chilis!!

Bottom Line:I love this bike! It is very fast and very responsive. The components are good, if not great, The Icon stuff seems very good. The head set on my sons 6500 has given us a little trouble, so I will keep an eye on that. The bontrager RE-1 pedals are gret!! I have shimano M-545's on my old bike and like the bontragers better. I was a little affraid of them after reading their reviews, but it was like they were talking about totally different pedals. these are great. My bike seems to have the wrong front derailuer a deore as apposed to a deore lx, LBS says they are the same?? I think he will swap it out if I argue a little. This is a lot of bike for the $695.00 I paid. The yellow is beautiful! A great buy !! definetly 5 flamers. See ya on the trails, well maybe not 'cause you will probably be behind me and my new Trek!!
