Date Reviewed: June 7, 2005
Favorite Trail:Fair Hill, MD
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $700.00
Purchased At:bike line newark DE
Strengths:lightweight... for an intermediate clydesdale
Weaknesses:crank is all bent out of shape after missed log hops and rolling some rocks for 5 years
Similar Products Used:gary fisher, higher line trek
Bike Setup:Shimano clipless, terry sadle, raised headseat because i grew
Bottom Line:wicked durable for the bruiser rider - great intro to racing - ripped through GRANOUGE and IRON HILL racing... taken on Fair Hill and the streets of UDel, raised hell in industrial parks, escaped angry motorists

Favorite Trail:CB has some great riding....like the 401 trail
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $500.00
Strengths:strong, plush fork, climbs and descends good, nice colors.
Weaknesses:weight, crapy components, stops like crap, drivetrain sucks, didn't come with clipless.
Similar Products Used:trek fuel 80, gary fisher sugar 4, schwinn moab 3, specalized stumpjumper m4 pro, giant nrs 2.
Bike Setup:icon flat bars, bontrager race stem, bontrager maverick rims, shimano 515 clipliess pedals, avid SD 7 brakes and levers.
Bottom Line:the brakes work like crap......even after i got the new avid sd 7 brakes, i dunno, maybe its the braking surface of my rims. the fork is very heavy, but very plush. rims are really strong and light. tires are awsome....tough, light and great grip in all conditons. the drivetrain kinda sucks....i mean its heavy and it makes a lot of noise in the middal ring in front and 1st and 2nd in back.

when i got this bike i though it would do fine for my kind of rideing. but ever since i got into racing, i gotta have the best.....thats only because i am neurotic, jk

ok the bottom line is that if your some weekend warrior who does not care about the fact that the rear derailier says deore lx insted of XTR or the fact that it weights a ton or the fact that the brakes are crap....go for it. but if you race and your neurotic(like me) and you need the best. dont get this bike.

Favorite Trail:...preferrably with dirt
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $650.00
Purchased At:Dutch Weelman
Strengths:Great overall feel, light, sweet colors, comes with good componants, etc., etc.
Weaknesses:Seems to need a lot of repair.... (or maybe I'll finally get that Specialized FSR Big Hit Comp)...
Bike Setup:Trek 6500, all the original componants, execpt for a Bontrager crank....
Bottom Line:Great bike, I've experienced a lot of complications because i ride too hard for an xc. the only major problem i've had is with the "icon" crankset that comes stock with it. the inside of the crank seems to turn from square to round, even when i make sure it's tight. i have gone through two icon cranks, and am currently in the process of rounding of the bomtrager crank, so i'll be purchasing a RaceFace soon...
Sweet Bike.

Favorite Trail:Crystal Lake Trail
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $650.00
Purchased At:The Cycle Center
Strengths:The frame is great, very light and responsive, and the Judy XC forks aren't to bad. A lot better than the Manitou Magnums. Other people have had problems with the cranks, but I haven't, and they've been great for me.
Weaknesses:The no name brakes and pedals. the brakes aren't to bad in the dry, but get them wet and you're screwed. The wheels aren't the greatest, either-I bent them after only a few weeks riding. They're kind of flexy, and no, I wasn't freeriding on them or anything.
Similar Products Used:Other Trek and Diamondback hardtails and some cheap crap department store bikes.
Bike Setup:Stock except for a different FS 2000 seat than I ever saw on any other 6500.
Bottom Line:A great value for the money. Ditch the brakes, rat trap pedals, and get stronger wheels, and you have a great bike.

Weaknesses:the no-name components, ie the brakes and clip pedals, but still a good start
Similar Products Used:this was the smoothest ride of all the bikes test-ridden, and by far the best value to get into the sport
Bike Setup:replaced the seat and definitely will replace the pedals next season, everything else is stock and doing fine
Bottom Line:definitely a great setup to get started, you end up with a great light frame to add whatever you want

Strengths:Frame kicks with it's light weight, Judy XC rocks when adjusted to 4" travel, overall solid
Weaknesses:Brakes are complete junk, levers and brakes, Rear crappy Corvair rim wnt WAY out of true on first major ride. No hucks and went out of true that I had to realese the breaks and walk the bike back out of the bush for an hour!!!!
Similar Products Used:Brodie, GT Avalanche 2.0
Bike Setup:Stock with SPD 434's, Judy adjusted to 4" travel

Price Paid: $650.00
Purchased At:Cyclesmith
Strengths:Front fork, the Judy Hydracoils work great, low maitnence and reliable, all around nice component set, frame is great, rims and Bontrager Jones tires are great
Weaknesses:Didn't come with clipless pedals, upgrade to a nice set off time ATACs, if you aren't soft on the tires then you will have to do your fair share of patches, the tires work great but are light and do get leaks.
Similar Products Used:Specialized Rockhopper, Gary Fisher Big Sur
Bike Setup:Stock except for Time ATAC pedals
Bottom Line:This is a great bike for a beginner racer or a cross country rider who wants performance but doesn't want to pay a crapload of money, its never really been a real hindrance for me yet, the small frame and tires make the bike very responsive and quick! The Rock Shox Judy Hydracoils are very good, i haven't had to do much maitnence with them and they work great, have good rebound to them.

Strengths:Great value, second comes the UsA frame.
Weaknesses:Hard-A$$ seat, cheap pedals, and my BB is creaking already >:| Judy XC's oil is leaking after a really long ride. Rear hub/cassette keeps "clicking" and the hub sometimes becomes silent :/
Similar Products Used:none...(Huffy's, Pacific's and all the Kmart crap doesnt count:) This is my first real BiKe
Bike Setup:Pretty much stock...except for some electronic goodies.
Bottom Line:Its a great bike for beginners. Best bang-for-da-buck. Lots of smiles when i ride. But the seat keeps reminding me to take a pit stop. None serious problems after 2 months and 600 miles on the bike. But like i said upgrade the seat and pedals.

Purchased At:Sicklers
Strengths:The Judy XC's are great (but why wouldn't they be, this is my first suspension bike), the frame feels like nothing compared to my 830, and the corvair rims rock!!!!!
Weaknesses:Around the 5th or 6th time riding, the pedal stripped right out of the crank after coming down from a climb. The threading was completely rubbed out. What a boner!! Trek seemed to take their sweet time fixing it, too. OTher than that, this bike is a great starting point for a guy like me.
Similar Products Used:Trek 830 Antelope
Bike Setup:Stock (except for Deore cranks, which my shop stripped from another bike)
Bottom Line:This bike is everything I was looking for after riding a tank for like ten years. Minus the crank problem, I am more than pleased with the bike. IT was well worth the money, especially for a college kid on a tight-ass budget!

Strengths:Great ride on and off road. Everyone says the brakes suck but I have Shimano XTR's on my old bike and they dont feel much diffrent. Great ride for an aluminum frame very forgiveing.
Weaknesses:CHANGE BRAKE PADS no offense but the stock ones suck. Put on all weather ones. When the stock ones get even a little splash on the rims it dosent stop. The bike could use a lighter front end the RS Judy XC is a little wieghty for the aluminum frame.

Submitted by Kevin a Weekend Warrior from Buffalo, New York
Date Reviewed: May 8, 2001
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $650.00
Strengths:The 6500 is an amazing off-the-shelf bike! It comes equipped with a solid collection of components that don't require immediate upgrades. I have only been riding mine for a little under a year, but so far it has survived some ugly bumps and bruises.
Weaknesses:The pedals and the brake handles should be the first to go. Clip-less pedals should almost be a requirement, and the brake handles have a very "wimpy" feel to them. I've wondered if I would accidently rip them off the bike at times. Otherwise I have no intention of upgrading anything in the near future.
Bike Setup:2000 Stock (but like I said before, it needs pedals and brake handles).
Bottom Line:I would recommend this bike to anyone who is an intermediate rider. The frame itself makes the bike worthwhile, and the stock components only add to the value. I test rode a bunch of other bikes, but this was by far my favorite!

Bottom Line:Going back to the 820 is like riding a tank. The 6500 is a nice ride as I'm getting into cross-country riding. Handles well though the pedals are scrap and the crank is a little weak. The bike is offered at a good price. I've always used Trek products and their quality is great. Hubs and Bottom Bracket are cheap
Similar Products Used:96 Schwinn Moab (stolen), 94 Diamondback (hit by car while riding)

Bottom Line:This is a fantastic bike for the price. Especially now because the 2000 models will be on sale. The 2000 model is superior to the 2001 6500 and 6700, don't be fooled! If you are looking for a dependable bike with a great frame that is made in the U.S.A., look no further. The brakes can be easily upgraded, as well as other components as they begin to wear out. This bike is definitely a great value.

This bike has very predictable riding characteristics. Look around because prices vary greatly from area to area.

Weaknesses:Brakes, pedals, crankset.
Similar Products Used:'94 Trek 930; Tested lost of Fishers, Specialized, Klein and Cannondales
Bike Setup:XTR brakes, Deore LX brake levers, shimano chainrings, clipless pedals
Bottom Line:I've had this bike for a year now (see my earlier review) and it is great! the frame is great especially considering the price. the components could be better, but as always you have to upgrade. i've put on Shimano XTR v-brakes with LX levers. i've also upgraded the chainrings since the stock rings were really flexy. i've had some trouble with the crankset and i'll probably switch that next. but i've ridden this bike 2 to 4 times a week in some hellish places like west virginia and the frederick, MD area. this bikes has seen soupy mud, torrential downpours, sand, streams, the rockiest trails you'll ever see and it's still smooth as can be. my philosophy is to buy moderately priced bikes with good frames and upgrade components as they die. this bike is perfect for it!! i think the 2001 edition is similar to the 2000 but with some different components (some better, some worse). i'd definitely recommend for intermediate riders.

Strengths:*this is for the 2001 model, couldnt find anything older* Just about all of it is good stuff! quality all over; bontrager wheels, strong frame, mildly light, deore derallieurs, manitou magnum fork which is plenty enough for my 150 5'8 body. i know it doesnt have the judy xc but that means nothing to me. the breaks are also killers man, use them lightly or you're going a** over tea kettle!
Weaknesses:hardass seat, but arent almost all stock seats?? the front deraillieur takes some getting used to as well, but its nothing major after you get used to it.

Strengths:a very light frame, good quality forks. Faultless transmission. Look the bollocks. Grippy tyres, although i might want something slicker than Jones for the summer.
Weaknesses:the brakes; they are wank, to put it bluntly
the fork is fairly heavy, but who gives a crap about the odd pound when you and the bike weigh 200 anyway.
Similar Products Used:Kona Cinder Cone, Marin Eldrige
Bike Setup:stock except for 535 clipless pedals
Bottom Line:This bike rocks. Although at £650 it's a bit more pricey on this side of the pond, it's still very good value. The brakes are just the one area that detracts from a really good ride. I guess that cheap no-name V's generally have poor modulation, but i dunno what i'll put on instead. I'm not really bothered about the weight, but i think that after the brakes, money spent should be on reducing rotational weight rather than shaving .1 or .2 lbs on drivetrain. I don't know how strong the frame is for riding other than cross country, but it's hand built so it should be able to stand up to a fair bit of abuse. All in all, a very cool bike.

Bike Setup:Downhill bars, Block Stem, BMX seat. Otherwise, pretty much stock.
Bottom Line:I love this bike. After changing to a stiffer weight spring, and setting up for the full 100mm of travel up front (the highest on the Judy XC), this bike is great. I know it isn't the greatest bike on the planet, but of all the other bikes I was considering, this definately had the best bang for the buck. Wanted to change some components to suit my likes (downhill bars, block stem, BMX oversized jumping seat), but even without these minor changes, this bike felt like a champ right out of the box. Favorite Trail:Island Lake, Maybery
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $680.00
Strengths:Very Stable, Stong but light frame, good looks. Excellent dealer network and typical Trek quality and reliability are evident.
Weaknesses:Seat (hard), cranks, and decals (easily scratched). 2001 models supposedly have cheaper components (no Judy, cheaper rear derailur)
Similar Products Used:Trek 8000
Bike Setup:Stock
Bottom Line:Overall a very nice bike. Traded up from a rigid Trek 850 that was unstable and worn out. The 6500 was rated highly among several magazines, and all the Trek dealers recommended it over other their other inventory at this price point. If you're on a budget (and who isn't), or a newbe, this is a safe buy. The frame is anvil-strong, but light and worthy of upgrades. It's pre-drilled for a disk brake set-up. And the typical Trek quality is evident throughout. Some reviewers have indicated that the components are weak, but after 3 months of riding 2-3 times a week, no problems.

I've found the bike to be very stable on the worn-out and overridden trails in the Detroit area; the hard-ass seat was uncomfortable at first, after a while, it didn't present a problem.

The other weaknesses are minor. The decals look great, as does the paint/finish, but those damn decals seem a lot more prone to scratching then even my 4 year old Trek 850. Ah, so what?? This is a good bike that you can purchase with no regrets, and upgrade over time. Try to find a 2000, though, if you can. The 2001's have lower quality components.

Strengths:This Bike has Rock Shox Judy XC which is good if you are going cross country. This shock is adjustable by using the preload adjuster on the top of the shock.
Weaknesses:The brakes on this bike could be improved a bit. I was adjusting them and now only one arm on the V-brake retracts. That can be fixed though.
Similar Products Used:At the shop where I purchased the bike, I also tried out the Giant Rainier. A good bike for the same price. This bike had Disc brakes, front and rear, but if the bike has disc brakes, the other components are lower quality so I stuck with the Trek.
Bike Setup:The bikes frame is an overall light one. Mixed with the components, it is about 28 pounds. It has Deore Shifters, 27 gears. It also has Bontrager wheels, Crank set and seatpost. I particurly like the quick release on the front and rear. The cassette and crank rings are good quality.
Bottom Line:The Trek 6500, good bike I would say. I purchased this bike for $600.00 in a bike shop in Glens Falls, NY. This bike is good for a person in between beginner and intermediate. I mostly use this bike on trails with my friends and it comes in handy for offroading.

Purchased At:rented from Fairwheel Bicycles
Strengths:This bike rules for an entry level mountain bike. I rented one in Tucson in October and rode a couple of trails and was pleasantly surprised at the preformance of the bike for the price. For new riders, this is a great "most bang for the buck bike". The bike is a great climber, has precise steering capabilities, and is rolls as true as high end bikes. Lower end Shimano and Icon components work very good. The stock set-up Rock Shox Judy XC gave me no problems during the rides.
Weaknesses:The bike is a little heavy, but hey, that is a given when you consider the lower end components. If the 6500 rides as well as it does, I'll guess that the Trek 7000 is really a grrreeeaaat performer and probably weighs less.
Similar Products Used:I personally ride a Gary Fisher Mt Tam and a Sugar 2, with some upgrades, mainly weight saving upgrades like XT cassette, hollowtech cranks, and lighter wheels.
Bike Setup:The bike I rented was completely stock, I just added my old Shimano 747 pedals and hit the trails.
Bottom Line:For the price, this is a great bike. Wish entry level bikes had been this good 10 years ago when I got hooked on the sport. A beginner would do well to purchase a 6500, as the frame is totally upgradable and should give years of troublefree performance if properly maintained. This bike is also suitable for the experienced rider who has limited funds, but wishes to have a totally upgradable bike that performs well right out of the box. Add your favorite clipless pedals and hit the trails. Have fun, that is what it is all about, but take care of the trails in your neck of the woods. Irresponsible riding causes permanent trail loss.

The frame is only .23 lbs heavier than Trek's top o' the line SLR frame. The original brakes are crap, so upgrade those and get some clipless pedals as soon as possible. This is a quality bike worthy of upgrades. The bike weighs in at about 28.5 pounds but you can drop weight with the brakes (30-40 grams) and increase performance, upgrade the Judy's hydracoil innards to an Englund's air shock retro-fit kit, shaving about 1.2 pounds. Get some lighter wheels and shave another 0.5 pounds plus different tires and maybe a cassette upgrade and you're suddenly talking about a 25 pound bike! for an extra $200.
However, as out of the shop it performs well climbing, descending and I felt my smallish 16.5" frame handled nimbly on tight singletrack. To some big hits and lots of nasty technical singletrack without complaint. Good bike at a great value!

Strengths:Very good frame, Alpha ZX is light strong and worthy of upgrading
Weaknesses:Fork way to heavy. Decent feel, but way to heavy.

Bottom Line:Of the few bikes of this price range that I have ridded, This one has the best feel (geometery) for me. The frame is a work of art and plenty worthy of upgrading. I bought used so I feel that I got an exceptional value, but even for the new msrp of 729, not a bad deal. Just clip in and ride.

Weaknesses:no-brand-name brakes, pedals w/ clips
Similar Products Used:cannondale
Bike Setup:put on shimano 535 pedals, Kore bar & stem, and xt brakes and levers; stock, otherwise
Bottom Line:This bike is about the best that a beginning rider can buy. It's got a nice(STRONG) frame, and good components. I ride this thing like hell over and through all kinds of crap, and after about 6 months of this abuse, there are NO signs of wear or tear(I maintain it well, though). The bike is fairly responsive, it corners well. The only two immediate upgrades I'd suggest for anyone who's gonna use it more than once or twice a month is a pedal upgrade (to clipless) and a brake and lever upgrade (to ANYTHING new and name brand). A GREAT BIKE. I'm VERY HAPPY WITH THIS PURCHASE.

Strengths:Just about everything. Fork has taken all kinds of crazy hits in the short amount of time I've ridden the bike and shows no signs of letting down. Frame is strong as hell. Tires corner pretty well on the trails. Shifts fairly quick and smoothly.
Weaknesses:Just a few minor little things. The front deraileur keeps throwing the chain off the rings, which sucks a big fatty when you're trying to climb a frickin hill. Probably just needs a minor adjustment. The grips are already starting to wear down. No big deal. Just gives me an excuse to buy something new for my bike. The stock pedals will probably be replaced soon with some clipless.
Similar Products Used:Gary Fisher Tassajara, GT Backwoods
Bike Setup:Completely stock (Judy XC), Added some barends, don't really need them, but hey, the bike looks pretty damn cool.
Bottom Line:For the money and for a first mtb, this bike is dope. Just with a stock setup, it can handle all kinds of terrain from smooth flat hardpacked to rocky downhills. Climbs well, rips thru descents. After getting this bad boy, I've been hooked on this sport. I only wanted to spend like $400-500 on my first mtb, but after riding the 6500 I didn't mind shelling out the extra bucks because I thinks it's well worth the money. Again, I've only been riding this thing for a short time, but so far so good.

Weaknesses:standard pedals, brakes (back brake squishy).
Bike Setup:Got rid of the pedals & put Performance clipless on right away. Installed a Thudbuster seatpost. The rest is stock.
Bottom Line:This is an update from when I first got the bike. I've ridden it over some pretty rough terain & crashed several times and all is working fine. The wheels are still true.
The bike climbs well and downhills are only limited by my internal fear factor.
The clipless upgrade is a must if you're a serious xc rider, and I'm well pleased with the new comfort from the Thudbuster.
Next upgrade(s) will probably be the brakes followed by some lightening of rotating mass (crank, b.b., wheels).
If I would have had a couple hundred dollars more initially, I would have still bought this bike.

To anyone who wants to get a great quality bike without a lot of immediate upgrades, for the intermmediate rider, this bike is the best bang for your buck, with a 9 spd deore/lx drivetrain, icon cranks, and very plush '00 Judy XC's and everything else bontrager, this bike is by far a better value for the money than anything Schwinn(you can get a moab 3, but you get an Acera Fr/derailler, shifters and Acera Cranks, garbage!), GT(espcially, in my opinion they are way overpricing the '00 Backwoods),and anything else out there. To top it off it comes with a very comfortable saddle by bontrager as well...so to anyone out there who is a beginner/intermediate who wants a sweet ride for a great value, get this kick a$$ bike, you can't wrong with a Trek!!! so with that in mind i give it five very enthusiastic Chili's!!!! What I have learned is my giant is still good for the pavement, but the trek is greased lightening on the single track. Dont expect to climb long hills easily. Forget using the small chain ring, too much bob.It is kind of heavy. But on the dirt single track I leave everyone behind. I guess that is what it is designed for, like I said , I dont know much. But I do know my ass hurts. The seat has to go.The grips suck too. The front derailler will be upgraded after I break it. The set up overall is pretty good when you consider what you paid for it. The derailers and brakes are on the low side but for the price it will be a pretty painless upgrade when the time comes. They are not so low though to make you want to upgrade right away. The fork is great. For someone who likes to just go out and ride and is not looking for something that will survive extreme downhills or intese racing I think this bike is perfect. It will certainly take a beating and bounce right back. Cna handle most situations really well. Feels good on the trail and also makes the wallet feel pretty good too. Bottom Line:Well.. I waited 3 or so months so I would have actually had time riding the thing so the newness of it wouldn't bias my opinion. Anyways, after some time on the bike, i am still very happy with it. I love the plushness of the shock, although its heavy, but I don't care because I'm not a racer. Maybe i will sometime, but not now. The frame is great for the price and it has disc mounts. I haven't really checked to see if it has routing for hydraulic lines. Anyways, as i said, the brakes suck. Bad. Belive that. I'm thinking of completely upgrading the whole brake set to lx or arch rival 40/sd 2.0 levers. The rear brake is totally screwy, the return spring in the lever is shot, etc. I swapped the pedals the day I bought it so I don't have any complaints about the pedals.. The seat is plush but not fat enough to get in the way so its cool. All in all its a great bike for just fun rides or beginner-intermediates. My friend with a manitou mars likes the judy better than his mars too. I've ridden his mars and its much harsher than the xc. but that I guess is the difference between air and coil oil shocks. Well... its 1 am and I'm getting unfocused and rambling so..... bye.

i've taken several tough rides on this already and it's performed well. it's comfortable on the downhils. a little tippy on the steep UHs but no big deal. handles well on technical singletracks. although it's probably not quite as good a frame as a cannondale CAAD2 or CAAD3, the increased price ($300-400) for the cannondale is NOT worth it.
