Favorite Trail:sheep's run laramie, wy
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $600.00
Purchased At:schwinn in fond du lac, wi
Strengths:still running, five years later, nice frame, drive train still stock and going strong.
Weaknesses:heavy tires, magnum fork had to go, no disk mount
Similar Products Used:nashbar aluminum, gary fisher('94), supergo access
Bike Setup:only thing stock is frame and drivetrain. duke fork, hellbent bar, easton stem, cheapo susp. post, jamis seat(though i did like the seat it came with, just left it on the trunk of a car), panaracer fire xc's
Bottom Line:the drive train has lasted five yrs, though not ridden hard. i bought this bike and a rack at same time. 15 minutes after buying, driving down highway, bike falls off at 65. sheared a 1/4" off the bar and seat. rode perfectly. tough bike. buy it if you get a good deal.

Date Reviewed: March 23, 2003
Favorite Trail:Fort Custer, Red Loop
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $550.00
Purchased At:Cross Country Cylce
Strengths:This bike has great up grade potentiality. I have put new Michelin Comp S tires on it, up graded it to XT fron and rear put a new Profile Design stem on it, shimano clipless pedals on it, new bontrager rims, selle italia saddle, cat eye computer, and still more! its now valued at over 1000 dollars...bottom line? this bike's great.
Weaknesses:The fork is alittle loose, and doesnt have too must adjustablity. The shifting was alittle tempermental, but that was fixed with a quick upgrade.
Similar Products Used:this is the only product that i can say that i have used since ive gotten into biking, though i have rode a schwinn moab 2 and a trek stx 1000. i really like the 6000 though over them both...maybe it's just because im bias.
Bike Setup:like i said above, upgraded.
Bottom Line:BUY YOUR OWN.....YOU CANT HAVE MINE. But if you do, know what your getting into, and have fun with it. it has great potential for being upgraded, and it still rides great right out of the shop. I rode a race on this bike and took 2nd place. 1st race i ever road. I am a long time lover of the trek company, and this is a great piece of machinery.

Similar Products Used:Specialized Hard Rock
Bike Setup:stock except for Specialized Body Geometry seat and XT rear deraileur (broke LX but worked fine)
Bottom Line:A very good bike for the price and a good overall beginners bike. The front derailleur isn't very effective and doesn't upshift well, but for under $600 you can't go wrong.

Favorite Trail:Ant Hills
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $450.00
Purchased At:Cyclone Cycles
Strengths:The frame is sturdy as all hell, takes a beating and keeps me on the trail. Performs well in the clay-like mud, better than I do =)
Weaknesses:Only concern, really, is the front derailluer. F'get about using the third chainring on a hairy trail. Also, too low of an angle for much jumping.
Bike Setup:Mostly stock, bontrager super stock bars, bontrager seatpost, manitou sx-d, avid brakes, better pedals, coda aheadset
Bottom Line:Bought this bike (slightly used) about a year ago, primarily for street riding. It takes cement jumps beautifully, and city stairs make it salivate. Decided to start trail riding this winter, and have ridden off road three times a week since. I love the bike, it seems to take on anything I can throw at it (even when I can't). It's been thrown across bayous, come full-force into trees, been used as a ladder on muddy bayou banks (just this morning, even =), and has done downhill head-over hills rolls with me, not a single bend in it. Rides go from nasty slop in the pouring down rain (those Jones' don't like slick stuff, but the mud rotation is great in the muck) to 100+ degrees in dusty conditions. My only complaints are the angle, my 130# self has trouble getting it off the ground in time; the front derailluer -- had to stop using the third chainring to avoid adjusting it every 30 minutes; and the fact that I bought a 21" when I really should be using 18" for the type of riding I enjoy. This is a great bike, the only reason I will ever replace the frame is becuase it's too big for me. Beat this bike to death, it loves it. I'll probably break my neck before I break this frame. I'd reccomend this bike to anyone who only has $500 to spend, and wants the best bang for their buck.

Strengths:Frame And Fork. I seriosly thought i was gonna break both when i bought this bike but even after 2 yrs they are still in one piece. The best part off this bike is the geometry it can ride anything
Weaknesses:Shifting componants are crap and the stock cranks flexed like heck. The Manitou Magnum Has not yet broken but i've never seen a fork flex like it. The Wheel set was not as strong as i would of liked but they were not too bad. This bike trashes rear rims like Heck (accualy i think that is me)

Strengths:Good Frame and overall allright components. It's ok for racing and is pretty light.
Weaknesses:I had the thing for about a year and snapped the chain about 10 times. What's up with that. Manitou fork is good in the beginning but onnce it breaks in, you will bottom it out just sitting on the thing. You can always get a new fork. The rims arn't so good when it comes to wheight but you can replace them too.

Bottom Line:I really like the Trek 6000 because it holds up to the beatings and crashes. I am 15 years old and love to race, ride trails, and freestyle so I needed something that could fit my budget, and my needs. I was thinking about trading in in the summer of 2002 but I decided that I'm not going to. I will build it up because I love the frame so much.

Weaknesses:Seat is not great.
Similar Products Used:Tested a Specialized MTB, liked this one better.
Bottom Line:Great price and deal- I'd buy this again without reservation. I know there are better bikes out there, but I couldn't find anything as good for the money I was willing to spend. I rode with a friend who rented the Trek Fuel, fulls suspension, and I still prefer this going uphill, although the bumpy ride downhill was probably better on the Fuel. But for $450, what else can one ask?

Date Reviewed: September 19, 2001
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $375.00
Purchased At:LBS
Strengths:Frame (weight and color...titanium)
Weaknesses:Lots of cheap components (brakes, stem, seat, cranks, pedals, front derailleur, seatpost). But, what do you want for a relatively low price?? Icon handlebars were too short (and I'm a small guy).
Bike Setup:Bontrager Race Modified handlebars, Bontrager Race Stem, TruVativ Stylo Team Cranks and TruVativ ISIS Drive SL bottom bracket, Wellgo 801 pedals,
Shimano XT Mega-9 shifters,
SRAM PC-99 chain and 9.0 cassette,
1-piece seat clamp,
AVID SD7 Mag V brakes and levers,
Oury grips,
Shimano XT Rear Derailleur, Shimano LX Front Derailleur (may upgrade to XT),
Bontrager Comp Seatpost (only 5g heavier than the race model, and half the price!),
Bontrager Race Lite magnesium Bar Ends (shortys) or Serfas Ergonomic/Dual Density Bar Ends (depending on how I'm feeling that day),
Trek CRZ+ "sack-saver" seat, Rolf Dolomite tubeless wheelset,
IRC Mythos XC tires,
Cane Creek S2 Headset,
Manitou SX-ti fork
Bottom Line:Since I bought the bike used (it was a rental!), I can't say any problems it had before I owned it. However, even before I upgraded everything, it seemed to be a good ride and took a beating. I know it seems like I put a bunch of good components on a "so-so frame," but I like the color, and it's pretty light in and by itself!
I haven't had a single problem with the Bontrager Corvair rims (I now use them as my back-ups)...they stayed trued (maybe because they were seriously broken-in).

Price Paid: $700.00
Purchased At:Atlanta Cyclery
Strengths:decent performing bike. reasonable components for general purpose riding. I haven't done anything super stressful to the bike so I don't know how it would hold up to that.
Weaknesses:Rear der. doesn't always behave itself. I'd probably consider upgrading the comps if I were going to keep it. Sure does need a lot of tuning up ... maybe I'm just particularly hard on it.
Similar Products Used:Nothing really, just tried out a few comparable bikes (spec, cannon) in the parking lot.
Bike Setup:Stock. Bontrager and LX.
Bottom Line:It's a good beginner bike, which is what it has been to me. But I'm already looking at a next bike and I probably won't go with Trek again. I'm really liking the the shock lock on my pal's cannondale so I may upgrade to an F800.

Anyway, if you're going to spend $700-$800 on a bike then this isn't a bad choice. I think most of the bikes in this price range are pretty comparable. No glaring differences. Just see what you like and make sure you don't compromise too much (i.e. "wow, i got some badass comps but ended up with a chromoly frame.")

Bottom Line:Buy this bike! its well worth the price, its VERY strong and the frame is super-light (i took the bike apart just yesterday to clean it up, and i was amazed at how light the frame is compared to ALL the other frames i've tried, and mine is a 21 inch'er!). I bought the bike in europe, when i was still a sucker, so i think the dealer kinda swapped some components (you cant really verify it there because they dont always get it stock from the U.S). Icon components are pretty nice, the bontrager owns (i LOVE my rims! the strongest and lightest so far... nice job Mr.jones), but my Sync fork is a P.O.S in my opinion (pls e mail me if you know anything about this anonymous fork...)
and im dying to replace it. overall, if you're a beginner-intermediate XC rider, who like to go fast and love a good strong durable frame- BUY THIS ONE! if you love a soft ride, get a softer hardtail (diamondback:) or a FS.

I dont know how it would hold up In a race or anything like that but for what i use it for (street riding and some occasional trails) this thing holds up great. The front derailer needs adjusting semi often but that is no biggy seeing as it only takes a minute to do that. The seat bent in all funny shapes at the first wreck i had but the bike just took a few scratches (war scars) I didnt like the pedals so i upgraded to shimano m515 spd and loving those. Bottom Line:What they say about the rims is true. They tend to come out of true real easy. I only had the problem with the rear wheel but I tend to abuse wheels anyway. I did a lot of upgrading on the bike almost every single component has been replaced. I only did that though because I wanted a more customized feel from the bike and better performance. I am no lightweight(200ib) so I dont mind the heavier frame. I race the bike every race season and it has never let me down when in need it peformed everytime. When you spend $500 you can only get so much bike. So you should not be disapointed. However, the bike does perform off road and should be considered as a good frame to upgrade.

Some components are wearing out now and showing signs of reaching their lifetime. In all fairness I have started riding more often and I don't think the bike was designed for lot's of riding. The substitution of the stock fork with the Z2 has made a massive difference, and perhaps that makes a difference to the bike. Still, the 6000 has given me an excellent platform from which to start cycling and for the money, I don't think anyone can have a reasonable complaint.

Strengths:Tough frame that takes abuse pretty well, not much else. If I had to find something positive, the tires were ok.
Weaknesses:Pretty much everything else. Bad seat, horrible cranks, too heavy, all components deteriorated QUICKLY, pretty much you name it and it either broke or didn't work right.
Similar Products Used:Tested GT and Giant bikes in similar price range. Learned my lesson and just upgraded to a Gary Fisher Sugar 3.
Bike Setup:Stock except I replaced crankset twice under warrantee, ended up with Shimano LX. Upgraded to XT rear derailer when chainsuck wasted the stock LX, a new rear cassette, more chains than I have fingers, and bought generic SPD pedals.
Bottom Line:I'll get right to the point - unless the only place you'll ride this thing is on a college campus or a paved road, STAY AWAY. It is not designed to handle offroad conditions, especially anything technical, or where adverse conditions (muddy or whatnot) are involved. Over the course of a full season riding relatively technical terrain, the bike never worked 100% for more than 3 weeks at a time. And I maintained it religiously. I had horrible, horrible chainsuck all the time, even after I replaced the whole drivetrain. Everything pretty much fell apart when the bike was pushed hard. I'd get more specific but the list is too long. I tried to get my money back and Trek and my bike shop weren't having it. When I persistently complained about the always-there chainsuck, those good people at Trek upgraded me to an LX crankset. Yeah, thanks for nothing. Replace a horrible crank with a horrible crank. Without rambling anymore, I'll sum it up by saying that it was an incredible dissapointment and if you have 500 bucks and want to ride offroad at all, stay away from this bike. Trek should know that selling this thing with offroad tires is false advertising. I almost didn't buy the Fisher because in the end, Trek was going to get even more of my money.

Strengths:The Trek 6000 has a nice rear derallieur, acceptable shifters and brake levers. The brakes are no name however they work surprisingly well. The frame is nice and sturdy with good welds. The handlebars are also okay. The best part of the bike is the geometry which allows the rider to steer easy.
Weaknesses:There are many weaknesses with this bike. The wheelset is very poor and is constantly becoming untrued, the Bottom Bracket is always acting up and the Front Derallieur is only Acera causing a constant adjustment every 6 hours of hard core riding. The frame is also kinda heavy, 4.2lbs, causing the entire bike to weigh more then it should. A good racing bike should weigh around 24-26 lbs, but the 6000 weighs about 28lbs.
Similar Products Used:Gary Fisher Tassajara, Cannondale F400 and M300, specialized rockhopper

Bottom Line:This bike is not so great for racing. Its main problem is that it is so heavy. The components are weak for the money. If I were a buyer, move up to the 6500 because this bike is definetly trash. For racing dont waste your money on any bike under $1100. You'll save more mony like that.

Bottom Line:I recommend this bike to anyone who's an intermediate rider--technical trails (root, rocks, downhills). I expect a lot out of my bike, so I have sent this bike through hell, beating the daylights out of it--ski slopes at 30mph, crashes, and it took me through a biathlon last month, with extreeemely rough trails. Maybe I could get some lighter components to lighten it up, 'cause those hills were tough.

I'm a weekend rider, and constantly putting it to the test. The fork has been excellent, as are the deraillieurs, and the shifters. Rims are bent from logs and crashes. (I'm excited to go now, just writing about it.)

TRICK: to get a cheap bike, buy the year end close-out model before July, before the new season's models come in. It'll be $100-200 cheaper, than when it first hit the bike shops.

Strengths:Great bang for your buck, the early 2000 versions(mine) come with the sx-d fork alot better than the magnum, handles good, nice aluminum frame with good welds on it for the money, fairly light, components and shock are a much better deal than on the other bikes i tried, some people have said that the pedals are awful and so are the clips, but i've never had a problem with them sure they're not highquality and they are kinda heavy but they've served me well, and i live by my toe clips, i mean, it's only about 500 bucks for the whole bike, what do you expect? Frogs? come one
Weaknesses:the normal stuff people have problems with, the front derailler gives me problems, i'm constantly adjusting it, the brakes are constantly getting offcenter and needing adjustment, and not to many people have mentioned this, but i've had problems with the rims, i true them or have them trued and after only a couple of east rides, they're already in need of being trued again, i was on a long street ride up to New Hampshire and i almost tacoed my rear rim, i had about 20 pounds on a rear rack and it just crapped out on me, i was a pissed, i've managed to kinda fix it till i can save up and geta better rim, but that shouldn't have happened. and recently, i broke my sram chain that i got only a few months ago, Whats up with that? some one in a previous review said that his chainring flexes and he thinks that's his source of chain breaking problems, i don't know, i do plan on upgrading the cranks and chainrings soon though

Strengths:Good solid frame, decent components, good fork, beautiful paint job. Lots of fun to ride. Can be upgraded easily.
Weaknesses:Bontrager Jones tires wash out on wood surfaces like bridges, and slip on logs, but not too bad. I'm going to upgrade to some Continentals.
Similar Products Used:A REALLY old Raleigh rigid bike.
Bike Setup:Titanium color, 19.5" frame fits me perfect and I am 6'1". All I've added so far was a Cateye Mity 3, a Topeak frame pump, and took those damn toe clips off.
Bottom Line:Let me tell you about my old bike. It was a Raleigh rigid bike that is around 10 years old. It was when 21 speeds first came out with the click shifters. It weighs around 44 pounds. It was a pain in the ass just to keep it working properly. When I bought my Trek, it was like I had been in a coma and woke up and saw the light. My Trek is so much lighter than the Raleigh, about 18 pounds lighter to be exact. It shifts like a dream, looks a whole hell of a lot better, and it has front suspension! The ride is so much better and I am enjoying riding my bike so much more now. I'm not getting so worn out from ridding a 44 pound steel beast around. At the parks I ride at, there is a lot of roots. My Raleigh would really kick my ass after a day on the roots. The Trek is so much nicer. The only complaint I really have about it is the Bontrager tires. They slip easily on smooth surfaces like wooden bridges. The first bridge I ever rode on, I wiped out while hauling ass, went over the edge and landed in this stagnant, nasty muddy pond that smelled like poop. Other than that, the bike is great. My Raleigh has since been retired and is hanging from the ceiling in my spare bedroom. The Trek is an absolutely wonderful bike to ride, and is damn good looking too. I did several months of research on this bike. I wrote to lots of people, looked at hundreds of websites, and this bike was by far the best value for the money. I put the bike on layaway, and when I did, it had a Manitou SX fork on it. When I went to pick it up, the bike had the Magnum on it and I was pretty pissed about it. But the owner was apologetic and sold the bike to me for 400 dollars! It was only 425 to begin with which is still a great deal. I am very very pleased with my bike. I plan to keep it a long time! Five flaming poo's for this excellent bike!

Weaknesses:I don't care for the front derailleur and the grips that came with the bike aren't so hot either. Also, I'm not so sure I like the brakes and brake levers.
Similar Products Used:GT, Gary Fisher, Schwinn, and Giant all in the same price range.

Bottom Line:The more I ride this bike , the more I like it. I've had this bike for a little over three months so now I feel I can make a fair review of it. When I first got the bike, I was so happy with it, I wanted to write a review right away. But, I thought I would give it some time to see how it broke in and how it handled some single track and heavier riding.

So it's been three months and do I still like it as much as I did when I bought it? The answer: YES! For the money, this bike fit me the best and seemed to have the best options. A lot of people have been saying that this bike isn't the highest quality you can buy and while that's true, for the money, this bike shoots the lights out. The Manitou fork, Corvair rims, Bontrager tires and LX rear derailleur really work well together on a bike in this $$ range. I've been riding for almost ten years and with starting out on a dept. store bike, this bike fits my needs best for my budget and is 100x better. Over time, I hope to upgrade some of the components such as the front derailleur, brakes, pedals, and maybe the seat and seat post. But, for the most part this bike is stellar. It handles my street riding (to and from class, etc.) easily and really works well on the trails when I get a chance to go. I recommend this bike for anybody who really enjoys riding but is on a budget, or somebody who is just starting out riding. You won't be let down and I can't stress enough what a great bike this is for the cash. I imagine I will eventually upgrade to a new bike completely, but for the next few years this will serve me well no matter what kind of riding I do.

Let me just say that if you are going to spend $500 dollars on a mtb, you are putting down a hefty sum of money. You might as well throw down a couple hundred more for a bike one or two steps up (such as a Trek 7000). There is a difference in quality! If you aren't a perfectionist or aren't that into biking, the 6000 rides nice. I was actually impressed with how well it rode for what it was composed of. If you are wavering on becoming an avid rider, do yourself and the environment a favor of buying quality right from the start.

Strengths:Solid frame, durability, good (Manitou Magnum) fork for price, rear derailleur, stock Corvair rims are decent. Geometry is very comfortable for long rides, though not optimized for steep climbs.
Weaknesses:Pretty much the cheap components. Heavy bottom bracket, cranks, lousy pedals, heavy seatpost, heavy cassette, grips and saddle fall apart pretty quickly. Ride is a bit jarring, given stiff aluminum frame

Bottom Line:For the money, this is a very good value. You can't put really nice, light components on a bike selling for $500. However, if you're willing to spend some money upgrading it, this bike can be quite outstanding. Aside from immediately upgrading your pedals and saddle, you should focus on reducing the drivetrain's weight. A reduction of 1/2 pounds in rotational mass feels like the equivalent of losing 2 pounds anywhere else. After upgrading most of my drivetrain, the Trek 6000 feels like a very different bike, very smooth, comfortable, much faster accelerating. Once I upgrade my wheelset to a set of Dave's Wheels with Chris King hubs and Valiant rims, this baby is going to fly!!! By the way, the USE SX post really improves the ride. Without the upgrades, I'd give the Trek 6000 four stars; with the upgrades it is a definite five stars.

Soon to add: Rockshox SID XC, Susp. seatost and Rolf Dolomite Wheels. My bike has gone from 29 lbs to 25 lbs. After to upgraded forks and wheels I will be down around 23.5 to 24 lbs. Obviously, you have to spend a lot of dough to get your ride light and durable. Looking back I should have bought the 7000 or 8000 model but I wasn't sure if I wanted to start riding again.
Bottom Line:This is my second review to give you all an update. I was just getting back into the sport when I wrote my first review. I love the bike, the components are cheap but it is perfect for a most week-end warriors. As noted, I have upgraded the hell out of my bike. The frame is not too heavy at 4.3 lbs and the cockpit layout fits my riding style. The Manitou Magnums are better than Jetts and do a fair job. I have recently upgraded to a 9 speed just because it is easier to get replacement parts and a friend sold me some stock parts of his new Trek VRX 400 (ie. Grips are slippery, even with gloves, and the seat hurts and is not durable (it broke on the first ride). YOU WILL NOT FIND A BETTER BIKE FOR UNDER $600!! It is basically the Trek 7000, only heavier. 5 flaming poopies!!

Bottom Line:We bought two of these bikes so we can bike everywhere. The first bikes were stolen within a month (wire locks...even kryto are no match for a lock cutter) in Montreal. I actually was driving around in a rage that night and saw the dude leaning on the shocks. chased him down a one way (the wrong way) but lost him.

We bought two new ones when we got back. Been riding ever since. I got rear ended on my way up to Rhode Island. A few inches from totaling the bike...only lost the rear rim though. The Deore LX rim and hub makes the bike even smoother than before.

PS: If you are in Montreal and see a trek 6000 call the 5-0 it may be my bike. (There aren't many american bikes in Canada...it will stick out.)

Strengths:Strong. Bomb-proof frame. Sticky tires.(good cornering stability, moderate traction on sandy uphills) Fork, this thing works better that I thought it would = to RockShox Judy or better. Bike for your buck ratio. Geometry= Very confident on downhill sections, overall good for flats. Icon component selection in the cockpit. Great bike for trail riders and weekend warriors. The price can't be beat.
Weaknesses:Drive train.(shimano LX rear, deore front) Pedals, get a set of clipless' right off the bat. Saddle (I bent the rails shortly after I got it, going through a tecnical section. The saddle it a bit too wide for my taste, and its hard to get out the back in an emergency downhill attemt.
Geometry= this bike does not exell in the uphill sections at all, if your looking for a sport racer go with something else, this bike will NOT get you uphill fast. The top tube is quite a bit shorter that I'd like to see.(nearly identical to the Specialized Stumpjumper FSR) The bike also tends to under steer a bit when decending @ speed. This could be that I'm just not leaning in enough, or it could be the fork, we'll have to see... Hubs. Weight,
30lbs.(ish) for a hardtail is quite a bit. Again the price can't be beat.

At least I don't push the darn thing up!) Under the saddle expandable tool pack. Bar ends. I have these pointed pretty much straight out (this helps immensely with climbing)
Bottom Line:Quite possebly the best bike for your $$ in the industry.
Overall the geometry is good for most situations, with bar ends it does climb enough to make your enty fee worth while in a sport race, but don't expect to get a top place finish.
I like this bike, it fits my tight student budget and I can ride it anywhere (on campus, streets, trail) All you Canadians and up state californians, if your in the market for a super cheapo free rider, look no farther, a few simple upgrades and a longtravel fork and this baby would roost!

For most people just coming into the sport, this bike looks great, but the more you learn about components ,you realize this is a beginners bike indeed. For the money it's a great platform to build on. I've invested about $500 on uprades in 6 months and plan to add more. That's ok with me because I have control over what goes on the bike. As of now ,I've hit the hardest trails this area offers and the bike has held up great. I shopped around for the most bike for the buck for 3 months prior to my purchace and I believe this is a good choice. Strengths:Price, upgradability, takes a lickin', keeps on tickin'. Great first bike, inexpensive enough if it only ends up being a casual hobby (which it didn'T!)
Weaknesses:front derailleur and head set are CRAP. Headset gets full of dirt if you even think about going offroad. Front shock leaves much to be desired if you weigh near 200 lbs, but a good upgrade is half the cost of the whole bike, so I'll tough it out till my next bike.
Bike Setup:CODA clipless pedals, onyx bar-ends, specialized ergo performance saddle, will be installing Chris King headset tomorrow.
Bottom Line:For what you pay, this is a great bike. When I bought it a couple of months ago, I wasn't sure if mountain biking would be just a quick phase, but this bike has helped get me hooked, which of course will let me justify buying a MUCH more expensive bike next time:-) The bike is a bit heavy, but that helps build your strength, so I won't complain. After a couple of months of research, I decided on this bike because of the components, frame, price and reputation(plus I got it for $450). The front deraileur isn't that bad once you figure it out....replace it when it breaks. If I could do it again I would've bought a new seat with the bike. I rode over 4 hours the first day and wasn't able to ride for three days. Now it's not that bad although I'll still replace it. So far I've taken a few good falls and the bike has held up to par. The brakes seem to work fine too. If you are like me and deciding between a GT and Trek, you really can't go wrong either way. Trek just happened to be on sale when I decided to buy. Bottom Line:Since it's my first mtb I will try and fair. For the price I believe it's a good choice. Since I'm 6'5" it's hard to find a bike my size and a good deal. I felt TREK offered the best option.

The frame, the rear derailleur, the fork and the headset are whiteout reproach. I weight 215 lbs. and I only bottomed out my Magnum on a few occasions. The overall performance is very nice. Good control.

The crankset is very very poor. About 10 times too much flex. Maybe for people between 100 and 150 lbs. its OK but I can't seem too ever be able to adjust my front derailleur because of this problem. Even the store mechanic takes 4 to 5 tries too get it rite and even then after one ride I need to do it again. I think I keep braking my chain because of this. Next year I'm gating a RACE FACE after my guaranty is expired.

I'll chance my saddle in the nest few weeks. It's all torn up, pretty cheap.

Buy this bike if your not to heavy, I believe a better crankset would solve most major problems.

Bottom Line:I have about 400 miles on the bike and it has performed very well. The front shock has worked extremely well for me and has not bottomed out on any trail. This includes roots, rocks, and jumps. I weight about 145 lbs. so I must be in the right weight range for the shock. The Manitou weighs 3.8 lbs. and the Rock Shock Judy XC on the Trek 6500 weighs 4.5 lbs. so the two bikes probably weigh about the same and that makes the 6000 a good product for the money.

The only weakness is the front derailleur that has needed frequent adjustments. I thought about upgrading to the LX, but the reviews were not very good for the front LX derailleur and the bike shop didn't even recommend the upgrade. I just seems that you can't count on the front derailleur for any shifts under load.

The bike is not light enough for racers but is great for on and off road recreational riders.

I'm a beginner, so I'm no great judge, but it just feels great on a single track - I almost always feel in control, with no surprises. No complaints on the saddle yet - longest ride was 90 minutes. The fork tends to bob on climbs, but I'm learning to counter with technique. Bottom bracket flexes a little pounding uphill. Strengths:Climbs and handles great for a bike that weighs this much. It never gets out from under me. Once that derailer is adjusted right, minimal problems, but improvement is needed.
Weaknesses:Like many of you, I see more asphalt than dirt, and the combination of great breaks and a soft shock means one thing, center of gravity shot and I've got 18 stitches to prove it. The shock needs to be more adjustable, and there needs to be a way to raise the handle bar to put some resistance between you and forward momentum, not a typical mountain bike problem, but for many of us reality sets in.
Similar Products Used:Many, many road/touring bikes

Bottom Line:Do not let the above discourage you, I love the thing. I would buy it again tomorrow. On dirt it is awesome, day to day in town it needs some flexability. I have taken many 2-3 day trips on it with no problems, (strange to find a place for the fly rod, but you can do it). I researched before I bought and was glad to find it lives up to all the rave reviews. I just thought it would be good to reflect on it's short comings. (my front shock is as hard as it gets, and the front break is at 1/2 and I have not kissed pavement again). Great first mountain bike and I see no reason to "upgrade".

I was certain I couldn't score a decent ride for under $900.00. Wrong! Although I am still in love with her DBR Zetec, I've found I can fight the lust and remain faithful to my Trek 6000 (OK, sometimes I stray a little, but don't tell her.) I'm very new to the sport, but know good engineering when I feel it. (even the proper mountings for rear disc brakes)
I have hundreds of miles on this bike, many in terrain I had no business being in, with only minimal adjustments to brakes and derailers. Again I should say I'm very new to biking, so given all of the trees I've plowed into, and as many times as I've seen this bike close-up from underneath it, it's holding up incredibly well.
As most have said, the seat's a bit big, and the front derailer shifts poorly, but all in all a great bike.
I just bought an identical bike (even the same Titanium color) in the 13" frame size for my ten year old daughter, and she absolutely loves it. Ready to hit the trails. (Yes, she is spoiled, as a matter of fact... I was gonna buy her a Trek 820, but then she told my wife... "I wanna be just like Dad"

Favorite Trail:Ask me in six months...
Duration Product Used:3 months
Strengths:Great frame, shock, very strong, balance, price. No-name brakes are surprisingly good. Components in general are of excellent quality for a bike in this price range.
Weaknesses:Seat is too wide and makes it difficult to slide off tbe back for steep downhills. Front derailleur requires constant adjustment. Crankset is low-spec as is front derailleur.
Similar Products Used:None come close in this price range ($500 - $550)
Bike Setup:Stock with Oury grips, Wellgo clipless pedals and Bontrager FS2000 seat. The clipless pedals and new seat are essential upgrades, get them when you buy the bike.
Bottom Line:This is my first real mountain bike and I cannot be happier with it. I have ridden this bike for 3 months and have had no problems whatsoever. I ride on trails only and it gets plenty abuse and takes it all in it's stride (unlike it's rider) This is the perfect bike for a beginner or intermediate rider who does not want to sell their car to pay for their bike. At 28lbs it is not for weight weenies but it feels very light on the trail. It has great balance and inspires confidence.

Many people have complained about the front derailleur and it WILL give you problems unless you adjust it before every ride. I do that and now it shifts on command. Just don't shift under heavy load =)

For the money you absolutely will not find a better bike. Five barbecued hedgehogs for the Trek 6000.

Strengths:Fork, Price, decent mix of components for price.
Weaknesses:Front derailer and chainrings. Sensitive to derailer adjustment. Pedals have plastic toe-clips (deathtraps).
Similar Products Used:GT rebound, Spec rockhopper FS, Raleigh M80
Bike Setup:Stock with nashbar computer, nashbar cheapo clipless pedals
Bottom Line:Great bike for the $. The Gt has better fork (judy XC), but some really ass componants (SR crank,BB). Raleigh has good components(all LX/deore), but Jett fork. Spec Rockhopper is lighter, but has alot of "spec" components and is about $650. the raleigh and GT were $600 at LBS..I got the 00 trek 6000 for $500 (19.5" Titainium&red)! for $100 less than the other bikes in the "class" you can easily upgrade the few minor things (get pedals and shoes first, posibbly seat/grips if they annoy you). Learn how to adjust the derailors before you dump $ on LX/XT stuff. Remembering to take pressure off the pedals when you shift helps it out alot. I think shifting while pedaling hard is the main problem people have with the acera stuff. I don't have any qualms with the seat/grips. Basicly you get a nice fork/frame and some good componants for ~$500 just upgrade as you break it. Im just geting into biking, so this is probobly the best value for the 500-600 class. The 6500 is nicer (lighter,9speed, better drivetrain) but costs ~$700. Id rather take that $200 and work with the 6000.

Bottom Line:You cannot go wrong buying this bike. Some people have been complaining about the seat, grips, derailleurs, etc., but I cant really go along with them. If you are looking to race or do some insane stuff this may not be the bike for you. But on the other hand if you enjoy cruising the single track and logging roads, you will most likely love this ride. You can always upgrade components as you see fit, so why spend $900-$1000 when you can spend $500?

Weaknesses:None so far!

Bottom Line:This bike is perfect for me. i used to be a weekend warrior, but now that i have this awsome bike, i'm out atleast 2hrs a day. the stock pedals were ok but i couldn't get out of those damn straps. i took it back to the shop and they gave me the clipless pedals for the stock ones and an extra 10 bucks. if you r a beginner to biking, this is the perfect bike for you. the rear triangle is the best. on my diamond back response my rear brakes decided they wouldn't grip and then i hit a tree. the ENTIRE rear triangle was broke off. i'll give this bike 5...ummm....things.

Bottom Line:This bike is fun. I'm by no means a experienced or accomplished rider, but this bike is sooo much fun. Sometimes it's a toss up between the girlfriend and a good solid ride on the slopes of Table Mountain. This bike feels heavy only when you load into the car. On the trail it so well balanced the weight concern is truly neglible. Besides 2 or 3 kilos aren't that much of a difference when you and the bike weigh around 120 kg. I like this bike alot. It dumped me on my first two rides, but since then every day is better than the last.
If you're a beginner like me, or even not-so-beginner this bike will not let you down. The weight will only help you build stronger legs, and that's no loss. It climbs like a mountain goat on steroids and is pretty damn stable on the scary downhills too. I love the ride!!!! And it wasn't too steep either.

Strengths:PRICE,LIGHT, STRONG, DECENT PARTS FOR THE MONEY, FORK. THIS BIKE IS PERFECT FOR ENTRY LEVEL RIDERS. I WOULD RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE WHO DOESNT HAVE ALOT OF CASH AND WANTS A STRONG BIKE. IT DEFINATLY NEEDS UPGRADES BUT ITS WORTH IT.
Weaknesses:FIRST THING THAT I CHANGED WAS THE SEAT. IT SUCKS. MY ASS WAS KILLING ME FOR 3 DAYS AFTER MY FIRST RIDE. I BOUGHT A SPECIALIZED BG SADDLE AND EVERYTHING IS COMFY. THE BRAKES ALSO SUCK. THEY SQUEEK AND SHAKE MY BIKE. AND LAST THE DERAILERS. THE BIKE CHANGES GEARS ALL BY IT SELF. THEN SOMETIMES IT SKIPS A GEAR. I WENT TO GET IT CHECKED OUT AND THE DEALER SAID IT IS THE CABLE AND IT NEEDS TO BREAK IT. OTHER THAN THAT THE BIKE IS GREAT
Bottom Line:ITS A GREAT BIKE FOR ENTRY LEVEL RIDERS WHO DONT HAVE TO MONEY TO GET A $1000 BIKE. A FEW UPGRADES AND THIS BIKE WILL BE A CHAMP.

Strengths:Thi products strengths are its light weight and maneuverablity in thick wooded trails. The bike is very strong and can take almost any punishment given to it.
Weaknesses:The three weaknesses I found on the bike were the shock which takes a beating but stands up to it unless the drop is over 4 feet high, the corvair rims which are totally not worth getting- because they aren't the black mavericks and they bend way to easy and the bontrager jones tires which don't last but a month with the crappy tread on them.
Similar Products Used:Trek 820 rigid
Bike Setup:Coda cranks,LX shimano cassette,WTB velicraptor tires, and the rest is stock.
Bottom Line:This bike is a good bike for the money but after a while your going to want to upgrade to a few better parts. If you are thinking about buying this bike i highly recommend it but try to get a better set of rims thrown in the deal. Such as bontrager mavericks because you won't be happy with the ones you will get on the bike.

I personally use it to ride around town. Worth the 500 dollars. It will get you started in your journey through mountain biking. Honestly if you have a few extra bucks go with something around hundred, you will be a lot happier with it. The Rockhopper is nice! Email me with questions!

Bike Setup:XT V-brakes, XT FD, XT rear hub and 8-speed cassette, STX-RC levers, Bontrager FS2000+ saddle, Shimano M434 clipless, Kalloy Uno 5-degree/105mm stem, barends
Bottom Line:This is actually my second review after about 600km on this bike. While the frame has held up well, many components have been upgraded.

First, the seat has to go if you're serious about going down any sort of hills. The original is simply too bulky for me to get behind it. Second, if you want to climb back up that hill, the stem has too go. The original 30-degree rise stem is simply too high. If you're having problem climbing, take a look at the stem.

This bike is good for less demanding beginners, but as your skills improve, many things will need to be upgraded.

I give it a 4 for value as you got a lot of cheap parts with the bike and 3 overall for the stupid stem, FD, seat and perhaps the crank.

Strengths:Trek reputation, fairly light, great price, easily upgradeable, Manitou Magnums (no Jett's like other bikes in it's price range), looks almost as beautiful as Estella Warren.
Weaknesses:Seat sucks so bad! (My ass is still aching from the ride this morning). Front derailler needs to be adjusted or replaced. Can't complain too much considering what I paid for the bike.
Similar Products Used:Raleigh M80, Shwinn Moab 3, Trek 7000 (loved it but a bit too pricey for me right now).
Bike Setup:Stock for now. Plan to do the following: Specialized or Bontrager seat, Deore LX front derailler, clipless pedals, XT crank set, Rock Shox suspension seat post, better brakes, etc....
Bottom Line:If you are looking for a bike between $500 and $650, look no further. This really is a great bike. It rides and looks fabulous. I love the Titanium color and the red trim. The Manitou shocks pay for themselves. I am 5'11" and 160lbs. the forks are perfect for my size. The only thing I have against the bike is the seat, but who cares (minor flaw).

Weaknesses:Front derailuer, although after careful adjustment by my LBS it has given me very little trouble.
Similar Products Used:None
Bike Setup:Stock
Bottom Line:If you are new to biking (like me) I think this is the best choice for a bike. It is reasonably priced, should last you a while with the stock setup, and makes riding very, very fun. I had been slaving along on an ancient, steel frame bike with no suspension. I wasn't having much fun (as you might imagine) and had stopped riding much. The 6000 has made riding EASY and fun. I can ride for hours now (and I'm in horrible shape) without getting worn out or beaten up (how did I live without suspension?) I searched quite a while when considering a new bike. I really feel this is the best bike for the money and don't think anyone will regret making a smiliar purchase. As far as how this bike compares to super high-end stuff, I have no idea. I'm a very casual rider (1-2 times per week) and have no experience with high end stuff. I just know that this bike goes where I want it to and has never let me down.

Great entry-level bike.
Weaknesses:Very little for the entry-level rider.
Bike Setup:Z2 BAM; Titec seatpost, stem, and riser bars; SDG saddle; XT brakes and levers.
Bottom Line:This is a great bike for the entry-level rider just starting out. That is what I was a year ago. Since that time, I have been gradually upgrading my ride one piece at a time. I still have a ways to go until I'm happy, but I have a good start already. If you are looking for a great bike to start out on with a good component group and a low price tag, this would be your bike. Once you become more experienced and wish to upgrade, this bike is a good base to start with. My next project is upgrading the drivetrain, Shimano XT. Again, due to the good component group coupled with the low sales price, I have to give this bike a great value rating. Good luck and happy riding.
