Favorite Trail:Hanna Pk, Fort Clinch
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $450.00
Purchased At:LBS
Strengths:Frame. For almost 10 years of riding nothing broke - still original drivetrain.
Weaknesses:450 for a new bike - nothing.
Similar Products Used:Moto Fly
Bike Setup:Duke SL fork, Sun Ringle handle bar, Avid SD 7, LX levers, Titec seat post, Terry saddle, Kenda Climax Lite tires.
Bottom Line:The bike was riden on XC trails, now used for pavement mostly (pulling the kids trailer, even somitems as a road bike).
It weights 26.5 lbs. Is it too much for a steel bike...? Thinking about making it singlespeed, fully-rigid and lighter wheels.

Strengths:indestructible. bomb-proof. i've thrown it over fences, down hills, and into the sides of minivans and this bit of steel just blows me a kiss and asks for more.
Weaknesses:my god, is it ever heavy
Similar Products Used:my first serious (read: non department-store) bike
Bike Setup:Redline fork, Mavic wheelset with Bontrager half-slick tires, fi:zi'k flat bar, Shimano Sltus shifters, WTB Race V saddle, GT headjoint, i've basically frankensteined this sucker
Bottom Line:seventy-five bucks for the most venerable frame in steel mountain bikes? I'll take it. I've ridden this thing over 2800 miles in the last year, through the snowiest winter ever in Michigan, through ninety degrees and nine degrees below. It is the consummate commuter, but it's so tempting to throw it at any trail, hill, or spandex-clad weekend warrior on a seven-thousand dollar Madone (who I just absolutely SMOKED, by the way). Yeah, it's heavy, but it's forgiving and extremely durable. Don't know about the stock components, I got it used and the previous owner obviously had great taste in aftermarket goods.

Duration Product Used:More than 3 years

Purchased At:Eagleeye Sports and Athletics
Strengths:I loved the frame and the components easy of changing and adjustment. I road on the same chain and drive train for 4 years and only replaced them as the broke. The price of the bike was great and easily upgradeable for a beginner as they advanced in skill level.
Weaknesses:I would say the only weeknessrd wer the fork (RS Jett TT), not enough travel and the heavy rims( Bontrager).
Similar Products Used:Tired all different kinds of Treks, and Giants
Bike Setup:The bike was stock except for a WTB Speed V saddle, Mavic 221 rims, Serfas bar ends, WTB grips, Road slick tires. The stock components work like champs until they just wore out from use.
Bottom Line:Botttom line I used this bike on all kinds of trails, raods, and everything in between. I used in college to commute to class, froiends rode it on trails and then as a road trainer. The frame was so strong and held up to anything I threw at it. I then put slicks on and changed the drive train and it worked great as a road trainer. I finally just sold the bike today to pay for my new road bike Giant OCR2 (2005)I hope I dont regret getting rid of that frame.

Bottom Line:the parts get thrashed, the frame rocks on...just about had it with the stx crank performance, i can smash'em for breakfast! looking for an older 8spd setup if anyone has one in very good condition (gruppo)....the best thing about this bike is the way it eats up twisty speed trails with obstacles...very much like my old kona...which is very surprising to me considering the different angles in the bike,,,but nevertheless this bike feels similar, almost like mini-transparent-suspension....anyway, one of the best deals ever

Strengths:Super strong and light True Temper OXIII 4.1 lb Frame 19.5"
Price
Frame quality, weight, welds, and paint
Weaknesses:Trek should have never gotten rid off this frame. At least they should've had one steel race bike on their line. But, I know, Fuel liquid (imitation Ellsworth) and the other ZR9000 hard tails sell better. If people could test ride bikes on the trail, it would be a different story.....
Similar Products Used:Litespeed, seven, trek 8500, Cannondale F2000, Salsa Ala carte frame, Bianchi Grizzly, and a ton others
Bike Setup:New 1999 Trek True Temper OXIII frame, Mavic 517 XT Wheels, Race Face Turbine LP crank, Race face rings and BB, XT cassette, XT Derailleurs and Shifters, Crank Bros Egg Beater Pedals, Avid SD7 levers and breaks, Duke XC 80mm, Michelin Wildgripper lite tires, Azonic orc stem, Azonic flat bar, FSA XLII headset, Tompson seatpost, serfas vado saddle, Sram 69 chain - ~23.5lbs I got lighter parts, but the bike is set up for aggresive XC ridding.
Bottom Line:I have tried bikes from $700 to $4500. This frame is better that any Titanium, Aluminum, or Carbon Fiber I've tried. If you can get this bike/frame you will understand how misleading the marketing hype is. If you want the best frame for your money, this is it. Granted the bike comes with 8spd crappy components, but the frame is what you want. I owned a Cannondale F2000 Caad 4 frame and everyone knows they ride like sh!t even with the stupid lefty. Of course no one will accept it after spending $2000 on a harsh-out of control-oversteering bike. Get this frame and chant down Babylon!!!!!

Strengths:The frame held up to trips down flights of stairs in Central Park and around NYC as well as many hard falls in the woods and racing. Althought the stock post was stuck in the frame it held up, I bent and Onza post in a crash.
Weaknesses:BB( put in wrong by the shop), seatpost frozen in the frame, wheels gave up after 2 years.

Strengths:Frame is awesome! I bent the steel frame on my old bike and this one has held up just great for 3 years of riding and also jumping!
Weaknesses:A bit heavy I guess compared to todays 20 pounders and the components aren't exactly the hot setup
Bike Setup:I've had to replace a lot of stuff: 2 wheels, handlebars, drivetrain and crankset
Bottom Line:Great bike, wicked strong frame, probably a bit heavy, but you can use it for just about anything. By the way, mine's a 1998 and it has Rock Shox Indy S shocks which have 48 mm of travel! I was pretty hard on it though and once I get everything fixed up on it and the snow goes away, I'll be out riding. The frame is definitely the best part.

Bottom Line:This is a great bike! The frams has held up to 2 years of me abusing it and it has performed wonderfully. The stock equipment are a bit weak. The breaks should be switched out if you buy one with stock still on em. Also, the cheapy stem flexed A LOT, and I'm only 175!!! Anyway, I love steel frames, they have a bit of give in em, so my rump is not as sore as my friends who ride hardtail alums. The only thing I would warn about is if you are a very heavy rider 230+. The frame will go from giving to flexing a lot, and ya don't want that!

Weaknesses:Stock components are O.K. Shock is a bit weak, although it's held up well for a beginner shock.

Bottom Line:I rode this bike hard for a couple of years (It's a 1998) and now it's been relegated to commuter after uprgrading to f/s moko moko... but I can honestly say that I've never seen a frame hold up so well!!! I still ride around and do stair drops and other small stunts and I never get a creak out of the frame... the stock parts will melt off and break if you go big but the frame never complains. I'm thinking about throwing a rigid fork, riser bar, and bash ring on it to make it a nice little trials bike cause I know I can depend on the frame for the drops.

Strengths:1)Frame, 2)drive train, and 3)rims have taken a lot of abuse over the past 1600 miles and held up without having any problems.
Weaknesses:1)Front shock (Rock Shox Indy C): is a basic front shock but does not provide any damping and very little shock absorption over large bumps. I have recently upgraded to the 2000 Judy XC. Next year I will submit a review for the Judy XC. 2) The bike came equiped with clip and strap type pedals. I have recently upgraded to Time Atac clipless pedals which are one of the best upgrades I have made. 3) Saddle. I do use this bike for 30 mile road workouts now and then. I have recently upgraded the saddle which has eleviated a "discomfort" problem.
Similar Products Used:This (1998 Trek 930) is my first mountain bike.
Bike Setup:Time Atac Aluminum pedals, Judy XC, Panaracer Fire XC Pro front and rear, Specialized Body Geometry Comp, SRAM ESP 7.0 front and rear, Avocet 45tt.
Bottom Line:1)This review is for the 1998 Trek 930
2)Upgrades were done as a result of component breakage from various spectacular crashes.
3)After riding the 930 for 1600 miles, through mud, sand, streams, and on fire roads, steep climbs, crazy downhill runs and on paved roads I can still say I love this bike. It is not the most expensive bike nor does it have the most expensive components. But as a bike it takes abuse without breakdowns, enables technical riding, it is comfortable to ride, and has a reasonable price tag.
4)The type of person who should buy this bike would be a beginner. However, when the beginner develops into an intermediate level rider, just a few components need to be upgraded to have a real nice bike.

Purchased At:The Bike Pedlar(Nashville)
Strengths:Great frame for the money! Steel gives you a great ride.
Weaknesses:The increased chain angles caused by the 9-speed drivetrain seem to cause a problem or two - e.g. the chain sometimes rubs the front derailleur. (Of course, many other bikes besides the 930 now have 9-speed drivetrains.) I'm starting to wonder if 9-speed stuff is kinda like disc brakes: overkill.
Similar Products Used:Independent Fabrication
Bike Setup:I bought the 930 frame only and put on a mix of LX/XT components, a used Bontrager seatpost, used Avocet saddle, Hellbent riser handlebar (need to cut it down a little, it's a little too wide), Bontrager wheels, IRC Mythos tires, old Judy SL, Control Tech stem, WTB headset, Shimano 535 pedals
Bottom Line:Like I said, the 930 frame is a great frame for the money. Unfortunately, Trek no longer makes it (but the tubing was made by True Temper, who still makes steel). I didn't like some of the stuff that came on the stock bike (but it's still a great bike for $650) so I put different stuff on it(see above). I've been very happy with it. It's pretty lightweight for steel - the way mine's set up it weighs just over 26 lbs.(19.5" frame). I wanted steel and thought about getting an Independent Fabrication - they're great frames but way expensive. I don't race (yet!) so it didn't seem worth it to me to get an IF. (You IF riders are saying "WHAT?!" Were you asleep when you rode that IF?!) Just one man's humble opinion.

Strengths:Frame is Awsome ,simply bullet proof, worthy of upgrading. Mine is a '94 model with Tripple Butted Chromolly tubing. Massive and stiff chain stays (for chromolly) really transmit power well. Nice component package. Great climber that is reasonably light. Great Value.
Weaknesses:Rigid forks were too rigid. Shord wheelbase transmitted many hard hits. A tad heavy for racing compared to today's bikes.
Similar Products Used:Raleigh M350, Specialized Hard Rock, Specialized Rockhopper, GT Zasker, Marin Eldridge Grain, Ross Mt. Hood
Bike Setup:Full LX 8-speed, Richie Ti Clipless, Race Face "Low Riser" Bar, Bontrager FS + 10 Saddle
Bottom Line:When I bought the bike back in '94 it was only $450.00! It was a GREAT ENTRY LEVEL Mt. Bike. Had a great frame that was worth upgrading. It came with STX 7-speed and looks that could kill (Ice Violet fade to Green). The forks back then weren't much so I baught it with a rigid fork. I have since upgraded to full LX - 8-speed, added risers, clipless pedals, and a Judy XC. This bike has stood the test of time! It's simply a great package, so great that I still have it even though I recently bought a new Y2K Trek 7000. If I can get half the life out of my new ride, I'll be happy. I'll never sell my old 930, it's simply too good a bike! Too bad that Trek dropped it from their line this year. I'd strongly recommend this bike to any cross country rider. If you can get your hands on one, go for it!

The fork also blew out long ago which I replaced with a Judy T2. Basically, the only original stuff is the frame, and bars.
Now that all the weak links have been replaced, I've got a great set of components on an even greater frame. I've dropped off ledges, hit trees, ran over boulders and the frame is still in perfect condition besides all the little dings from pebbles.

Bottom Line:I bought my 930shx in 1997 when it was worth £650 and I paid £500. Sinxce then Trek has lowered the componentry some what and the price has come down to under £400 in some shops. My bike came with LX rear mech and shifters and STX cranks and front deraileur and brakes. It is a shame that Trek has downclassed these components to Alivio/STX RC mix. The bike is fast, comfortable and strong, it has survived innumerable prangs and a 30mph strike into the side of a van. It looks bloody good too, as I got a dark blue model with a smart cream and blue Rock Shox Indy C fork which matched well, but went from being really stiff to offering no real benefit when it did eventually dampen out. I have left my bike back in Blighty (the UK) and Am looking for a new bike in New Zealand. I am looking at a Specialised FSR XC or maybe a Kona Pahoehoe. Any recommendations? E-mail me please. As for the Trek, great starter, and now even cheaper, but upgrade the fork fast and see if the components can be upgraded in teh shop.

Bottom Line:This is my first mountain bike and I have been happy with it so far. My main complaints are these: The Alivio crank is awful (got an LX), the Bontrager Maverick Rims bend all the time, toe clips (got Ritchey cliplesses), brakes are awful when wet. Other than these everything is solid.

Bottom Line:I added a front and rear XTR derailer. The bike came with Matrix rims which have help up great. Still True after 2 years of heavy thrasin including some 5'-8' drop ins. I would very much reccomend this bike if you like a great handling, quick, and affordable bike. With some upgrades you will be amazed. Mine is a 96, but I have looked at the new 930's and the frame appears to be exact. They also included rapidfire shifters and I received the grip shift which I still use and enjoy.

Bottom Line:I researched the hell out of bikes before I bought this one. I looked at everything from costco bikes to way more than i could afford (or than my wife would let me spend). I read the MTB reviews and I would have to agree with most of them. This is a really good bike! It's so much easier up the hills than my old Hard Rock and is much more staple down the hills. The Shock has performed great and I wieght about 200 lbs. The bike handles really well, perhaps to well I am pushing myself more and more. Even though some of the components are not the best shimano offers they have performed really really well. And I am pretty hard on the derailuers. The only problem that I have had is 2 links on the chain bound up. (so what?) I was ready to get a rockhopper for $550.00 and I am glad I got the 930. It was only $459.00 and the store gave me $46.00 in store credit. I am really happy with my purchase and for intermediate riders I think this bike rocks. So 5 Flaming Poo Poo's for the 930.

Strengths:
Handles well. Light Bike. Great Value for the money. Trek Name. Good Brakes except for wet conditions. Cro Moly frame is more forgiving in rough conditions
Weaknesses:
Brakes loose power when wet, and then leave a black stain on the wheels and sidewalls of tires. Stock tires are terrible. I am currently upgrading to Specialized Team Master/Control, and i'm adding shimano clipless pedals. Front derailer Does not always alingn correctly.

I bought the bike w/o a shock and added a Rock Shox Indy SL. I also added a t-less headset.
Bottom Line:This is a very good bike. With a few modifications it can be made into a serious off road bike. This bike really likes to fly on the downhills. I am always braking to give my friends who spent $1000 plus on bikes room. They are amazed at how easily i keep up with this bike, and more amazed at the price it cost me.

Strengths:
This bike is great!!! the LX components(althought not the best) were a big plus for a bike in that price range. strong, triplebutted cro-mo frame is strong and only weighs 1 oz more than the aluminum. the rims are unstoppable! I would like to see anybody (besides a pro) bend these bad enough for repair. brakes are very nice. although they are generic and are slippery in wet weather, they still work exceptionaly well.
Weaknesses:
the brakes. and the forks are definetly lower class.

Bottom Line:the bottom line is that the 930 is an excellent bike for handling, ascent, descent, traction, control, strength, price, and everything else. im getting a $50 longtravel kit for the forks. throw soft springs on the forks and you have well damped 80 mm of travel. also throw on a brake booster and you've got yourself a really nice bike to make you friends jealous.

I have owned many bikes, and ridden many friends bikes, but nothing can beat the 930 for Riding Pleasure
Bike Setup:
The 930 has Rock Shox suspension at the front, but when you are jumping the cro-moly frame has as much shock as the average dual-suspension bike.
Bottom Line:The Bottom Line is the Trek 930 is a brilliant bike, and It rides like it cost twice as much as it did.

Bottom Line:

I have ridden the 930shx at LEAST 3 times a week for over a year now on very rough terrain. Through streams, rocks, farms ,up and down mountains, ect.
The bike held up well to a point, the more serious I got into the sport the less I liked the components. The frame is great for cro-molly but I got tired of upgrading things so now I have decided to get a high end bike. The 930 was a great introduction to the sport but if you plan to get real serious and spend alot of time on your bike look for something that can handle the constant bashing and crashing. If you ride only in nice weather and the ride is not through too rough terrain the 930 is a great ride for the money.

Bottom Line:

I do in fact own a Trek 920, but I believe that in the US, no such bike is available, so this is as close as I can get. The 920 is very much a 930, but with no front fork.
What can I say about it: It kicks ass, as far as I'm concerned. It is easily as light if not lighter than anything in it's class, and overwhelmes any competitive Marin or GT, just to name a few. It was pretty cheap for what it is, and has far better components than any competitor could offer for a similar price. For just £360 you cannot go wrong.

Bottom Line:

I've bought the Trek 930 three months ago, and I must say it rides great!
It's my second ATB (the one I had before was a Raleigh) and the first one with front suspension. The forefork is a Rockshox Jett T2, so it is the cheapest Rockshox there is (I believe). I'm thinking of replacing the fork with a better one without elastomers. Maybe a Manitou (Spyder)or a Marzzochi Bomber. A fork that has a larger travel than the one I have now.
This is my product Review for so far, and I wish all bikers big fun!

Bottom Line:

Well, time to review the Trek. I have had one of these for about 3 years. I bought a brand-new VW Jetta-Edition 930 at a consignment shop in Missoula MT, what a deal! for $425 with generic bar-ends thrown in. The graphics were really what sold the bike, man are they sharp! And the ride... I noticed a big improvement over my old Raleigh technium, which was pretty sweet itself. It was a little heavy, but I didn't mind, the geometry was tight and it was very lively compared to the Raleigh. That year I took it on a mountain bike course at the University of Montana, and that bike was just flawless. I was in the slow group, as we preferred enjoyment of the location--the Rockies!--over training for some non-existent race day, but I could climb well with it and hammer it downhill afterward. I could hit all the ruts I wanted, and this bike was bombproof! I only wished it had a suspension fork (notice I'm talking in the past tense). Well, I eventually moved to MI and took the bike apart for shipping, and when I got it here I had the LBS reassemble it with V-brakes, a Kore stem, and an Indy C fork. I was not real impressed with the fork. It flexes a lot and I'm not so confident cornering. Plus it made the front end too heavy. I was also not impressed with the Kore stem, but that's more the LBS's fault--I ordered the Elite, and they gave me the standard squeeze-clamp type (I don't know what you call it--you just tighten it down with the one allen bolt). Plus the sticker came right off, oh well. It's stilla cool stem. That's more a gig on the LBS. The weight of the fork, combined with (I think) the smallish frame, makes it hard for me to wheelie. But the frame still feels rock-solid! It's responsive as heck. Well, here I am in the UP, but my new home is in WI, which is kind of flat. I keep the Trek down there so when I go home I have something to ride. Because of the new terrain, I took off the rear brake, the inner chainrings, the front derailleur, and the shifters. This improves the weight a little of course, but it's still a rather heavy bike. It's got good weight for steel though. Mainly this is a value bike, and a very good one!
The Trek I bought came with Matrix rims, a System suspension hub, a Shimano silent clutch rear hub, cool tires (Piranha Pros I think--??), System bar and stem, and the STX group. The wheelset was the best part--all this time, and they're still true! Plus they give a killer look to it. Well that's all for the Trek. I needed something for up here, and my dream bike has always been a Cannondale, AND I wanted something lighter, so I finally got one. I've mentioned it elsewhere in MTBR. Maybe someday I'll give a real review. It only took me 3 years to review the Trek =) If they are still making the 930, I recommend it for a steel bike!this little type-in box is too wide for the browser window. I wish they would fix this so I don't have to keep scrolling up and down and left and right just to see what I type! Ride on.
