I have raced this bike 20 times or so and the only thing that has ever broken is the forks(but as you can see i changed them to Marzochhi's...recomend doing that). Very nice frame but the bike is a tad heavy for racing. Very good acceleration and descending capabilities. Fell from 6 feet broad side on a tree and only lost a little paint in the incident. Whoever says the frame is week must have hit a brick wall at 100miles an hour. Anyway i give it five flamin' chillis. Unbelievable bike. Dont spen anymore that $1400US on a bike cause this will kick any freeride bikes ass.

Strengths:
Spec'd hydraulic front disc brake. Rear disc tabs and hub make upgrade to dual discs very affordable. Most Icon products held up well (except cranks). LX/XT drivetrain works well for non-competitive riding.
Weaknesses:
Still not sure about the suspension post. May try a lighter-weight rigid post. The Judy 100 fork was good for the first year, but completely crapped out thereafter. Bent the crank-spider and trashed the chain-rings, but that was mostly due to hard riding. Upgrading to a rear disc was definitely the way to go.
Similar Products Used:
1996 Gary Fisher Tassajara - Replaced everything except the frame before buying the 8500LT in late '98.
Bike Setup:
Marzocchi Z-1 MCR fork, Dual Hayes Hydraulics, Bontrager Crankset.
Bottom Line:
This bike has held up very well over the past 2 years plus of fairly heavy riding by a 195 lb. rider. The Judy 100 fork however, is not a good fork for any sort of extended abusive riding. There was also the issue of adjustablity of the fork. Marzocchi is a much better option if you have the cash to upgrade. I've raced this bike a handful of times and found that it is a bit heavy for this use, but performs extremely well on any sort of technical terrain. The jury's still out on the suspension post. If you listen to the stupid magazines, suspension posts are no longer cool, but it hasn't bothered me enough to go back to rigid. The longer travel for will affect climbing because of a more relaxed head angle, but I have gotten used to it, and the ECC on the Marzocchi fork has helped with this. Overall, a great bike that's fun to ride.

Bottom Line:
This bike is nice. My bike has the dual LX v-brakes, so there's not as much all-weather braking, but the performance of the bike improves when 1.) you don't have to worry about clipping in and/or out in sticky situations, and 2.) you don't have to worry about getting mud and/or rocks in your face while you're riding in the mud (which there is a lot of around here). Bottom line is that if you can get this bike for under $1000 like I did, do so. It's a deal. But it's not a DH or even a DS bike. It's just a bike, so treat it like one and it won't break.

The Judy 100 shock is great. Several people I've ridden with have commented that the shock works a lot. I agree. I think the spring in an oil bath is the way to go. Personally, I like the raised bar and shock seat post. They both seem to help my lower back. The front disk brake is nice and works very smoothly. I can climb a lot better with this bike. It is very smooth and feels good on the trail. I would have never thought that a bike could make such a difference. The only thing I don't like as well as my old bike is that the 8500LT doesn't turn as crisply, although it has wider bars. I ride a lot through curvy, twisty tree lined trails and I was able to zip through those sections on my old bike. Of course, it may be that it will just take some getting use to and later I'll be zipping through the twists just as nimbly with the 8500LT.
I strongly recommend this bike. I love riding it.

This bike is great-I love it! For those of us who ride for the ride, the 8500LT is the perfect blend of cross-country nimbleness and downhill plushness. It accelerates like crazy and loves to be tossed through corners. Climbing is easy, on or off the saddle. Roll over the top of the hill and descending is just as good. The Bomber is amazing-you don't even notice how hard it's working, but it sucks up everything. The Hayes brakes will throw you over the bar before you realize you grabbed the lever. Nice. I think Trek has found the future of mountain biking. Long-travel hardtail with disks. Simplicity and Performance. If you're a cross country racer, it's probably too heavy; if you're a DHer, it's a hardtail; but if you ride for the ride, this is the bike. I take away one flaming chili for the big price. Just try to get a deal at your local shop. It worked for me.

Super light frame. This baby makes up for the added weight of the disc brakes. Parts are solid and made to take abuse. Marzocchi Z.3 Flylight is an impressive 4" stroke air fork. The seat/seatpost is surprisingly cush.
Weaknesses:
Paint scratches pretty easily. I would have preferred a coil 4" fork, even at the sacrifice of a bit more weight. Icon riser bar just didn't sit well with me, switched to a flat Easton bar.
There's very little to gripe about this bike. The frame is solidly built, the gussets are huge, yet the whole thing is _LIGHT_. I have a Psyclewerks dualie that I take up on lifts and stuff, but for day-to-day play riding, the Trek 8500 is _ALL_ you need to have tons of fun. This bike likes to be flicked around. I liked the huge adjustability of the air fork. Nothing like pumping it up high for reduced climbing bob, getting to the top, letting some air out and then REALLY letting some air out. :)

This is a follow up review to my last one that was a week ago. Just a couple minor annoyances. First off I got the 16.5 frame, so it is harder to get my old big waterbottles on the frame. but no biggie there, I have a hydrapack. But it is worth pointing out if you hate camelbak. Second, the rear disk got some air into the system so it isn't working as good. the feel at the lever is more mushy, but the brake still stops, just not as great. Third, the fork needs some boots. I really like the way it looks without, but after going through several big mud holes, I'm gonna have Peloton Cycles throw the boots on and keep my Judy riding good. Fourth, in certain gear combos the chain rubs derailleur. I know, I know, every derailleur does that, but it bugs me so I am going to put a Sachs twister on the front so I can run any combo I want with no chain drag. But still it is a nice bike, and I can't blame trek for specing what they did. It is all perfect with just a couple of minor fixes. If you can get one on closeout I would highly recommend that you do. happy trails!!!

I just got this bike but it is still a kick-a deal. I got the whole thing with a second disc and wellgo pedals for $1450 U.s. Sweet. Maybe there are better deals out there, but this is just sweet. The frame rules. Light weight, so if I ever want to lose that freeriding hardtail feel I could turn it into a lightweight racer. The components are good, too. Yeah, so what if there is LX on it. I had some three year old Acera-X crap on my last bike and it was still working just perfectly!!! So LX will stay on until it breaks. the Judy 100 is a dang nice fork. I would venture to say that is maybe even nicer than my bomber Z-2 and that is a dang sweet fork. I kranked the preload on the Judy and it is still bobing a good amount (almost half the travel), but I kinda like that. I'm a lightweight (18yo, 6ft, 130lbs) so I appreciate anything that is more active than that crapppy manitou that I had. Now for the discs. They are dang sweet!!! the rear one drags just a little bit, but I don't really care!!! they stop great. I was commuting yesterday and the rain started pouring, but they still stopped great. So much better than rim brakes. I pray that I never have to go back to rims!!! And I got such a good deal on this bike!!! Peloton cycles in Loveland threw the Second Hayes and the Wellgo's on for no extra cost!!!! And it handles good even though the geometry is a little more relaxed. I love it!!! The review in old issue of Mountain Bike mag is fairly representative of this bike. It doesn't turn real sharp, but I'll get used to it. The damn thing feels like it weighs a ton (27 or so pounds). Lack of QR seatpost is annoying. If they could figure out how to get under 25#, it be unstoppable.

Here is the whole story(this letter was e-mailed to all Trek depts. 2 weeks ago....no reply yet): Dear Trek Bicycles:I am taking the time to write this letter to inform you about some quality issues I have discovered in your frame making process. My first mountain bike was a 1995 Trek 850 (Steel). I rode this bike and had tons of fun with it until the frame broke in May 1998. The frame broke on the rear weld of the chainstay. 4 years seems pretty reasonable considering what the bike went through in that time. Unfortunately my experience gets worse. When the frame was warranted I decided to upgrade to a better frame and bike. I ended up getting a 1998 Trek 8000SL . I was told by a Trek rep that was in International Bicycle Center in Newton, MA (very big Trek dealer) that this bike was “Bomb-Proof”. 600 miles later this was not the case…..the frame broke at the weld between the chainstay and the bottom bracket and I had to walk 3 miles out. After 600 miles of trails on this bike I had developed a relationship with this bike so this was a sad day. I did not want to go long without a bike so I immediately called International Bicycle Center in Brighton, MA and they had a 1998 19.5” 8500 frame in stock (lucky me). This time when I started riding my new frame I was not gleaming with confidence. Especially after the sales person told me they have seen many broken Al Treks. Riding this frame was scary because I was nervous it was going to break at a bad time. 250 miles later the frame cracked in the same exact spot!!!! That evening I went into Bay Road Bikes in South Hamilton, MA. Aaron (Co-owner) took the time to listen to my story and calm me down. I told him I would never get on a Trek again in my life. Because of the cost of not using the warrantee…I was forced to get another Trek! I should have this in Wed. July 28th. Hitting the trail with this frame I am sure there will be no “warm fuzzy feeling”. Being the trail with this bike will just be a trial of when it breaks. I ride with several groups in the Boston area (www.nemba.org and www.ragemtb.com ) and many people know my story. Many of these people want to know why these frames keep breaking. One thing I did notice on several other Al frames (Cannondale, Gary Fisher…etc) is that they all have a reinforcement bar in the bottom of the triangles (inside chainstay). This letter will be published to all my local riding groups and to any relevant sites on the internet (www.mtbr.com). Any feedback I receive from Trek will be published and addended to my postings. If there is no response…that will also be posted. My friends and I would like to know why we should consider/continue to ride Trek bikes.I feel 2 weeks is a reasonable time to allow to hear back from you in regards to this matter. Update: I got my new frame and there is a gusset where it kept breaking...I guess it won't break there again. Michael J. Duval Mduval@alphaind.com

The Judy 100 compliments the bike very nicely, it is soooooo plush! The frame is light and very strong, also. The RockShox seatpost is okay if you dont race, but i took it off and put on a titec post.

Avid 1.0 Rear Brake No Fork Boots (looks cool without but dirt gets in there)
Bottom Line:
I've had this bike about a few months now and still rave to people the great price on this thing. I got it for $1300 and am totally satisfied with what I got. I previously owned a $2500 GT LTS-1 that Got stolen and wanted to get another full suspension but could not afford it. I was looking at hardtails and almost bought a Jamis Dragon for XC racing. But when I saw the Trek, I was sold. Especially with that price. The rims kick ass! Keith's newest design (i think) and a good idea by using disk compatable hubs on both wheels for a possible upgrade. The fork rocks! having been on a '97 Judy XC in the past, I always thought it was very flexy from side to side. Wasn't very confidence inspiring. That is not the case with the Judy 100. A very solid and plush fork (if you set it up right). I have to say that the only fault that I see with the bike was the rear brake. I'm not a fan of avid equipment but do realize that it's there to keep costs down. Also because I swithch my levers so that my front brake lever is on my right hand (motorcycle style) I had to have the shop re-install the hayes and avid levers upside down. No biggie. just doesn't look as good. Will be fine when I do my hayes rear brake upgrade (maybe). All in all this bike had got to be the best buy on the market for a hardtail. PERIOD. It's relatively light ~25lbs and with a switch of the bar and seatpost it's race ready. whover gives this bike less than 4 chilis is a schmuck and doesn't know dick about bikes and technology.

I had a custom 853 hardtail built recently with full XTR and Manitou SX Ti. Took a ride today on the $1400 Trek 8500 LT. I'm wishing I hadn't. Later rode my own bike and was a tad disapointed. Trek has a real winner here. A little heavy for racing, but oh so comfy, and deceptively nimble. The combo of long travel fork and suspension post on a hardtail frame is made to order for agressive eastern riding. Big drop-offs were a piece of cake on this thing, steering is light and precise, disk brake modulates well and is a true one finger stopper. Action is not as light as XTR, but disks don't care what goop you are riding in, unlike V brakes. Rock Shox 100mm fork is plush, but a bit flexy and lacking in rebound control. Still, this bike is nearly perfect as is. I want a longer travel fork on my rig now, or maybe I'll just pick up the 8500. 4 chillies for the bike, 5 chillies for the guts to market it.
