It's a trek, frame is guaranteed for life unless of course you ever decide to jump it, now who would do that~?

It has done everything i've asked from jumping in river on it drunk in high school, to a 70 mile death ride cross country, to doing some free ridin hittin dirt jumps and hucking some small rails and drops, to now being a single speed cruiser/trails bike to hop around on rocks with. This frame is super strong. Great for jumping, droping, or whatever will get your heart a pumpin. THis bike has taken some serious abuse and shows no sings of wear.

Bottom Line:
Riding this bike is so much fun. If you want to put in the upgrades you can turn this into a super good freeride bike (for a hardtail). The best way to improve at freeriding is to do it on a hardtail, then everything will be effortless on a full suspension. Thats all

Strengths:
Very tough frame. I am using it as a downhill bike for moderate terrain (1'-2' drops), rocky roads, roots, etc. and it survived it all.
Weaknesses:
The RST fork is a joke though it managed to keep my front wheel true so far. The rear rim bends really quickly once you start going real XC. Had to replace it with Sun Rhyno Lite. The original pedals won't withstand even moderate XC use. The breaks are pre-V brakes type. It does take some time to really stop the bike.
Bike Setup:
The original setup Shimano Acera and Olivio, rear wheel was replaced with Sun Rhyno Lite on Deore hub. Axiom BMX-style flat pedals.
Bottom Line:
One of the best entry-level XC hardtails. It is light and tough. I am not even sure if they still make these bikes. I just wanted to a pay a tribute to my ol' two-wheelled friend who got me into the joy of XC and freeriding. The bike is indestructable. It squeaks but keeps goin'. Once you get down from the mountains, it works fine as a commuter bike too.

Great look and color. The Sram 5.0 have never given me any trouble, except for possible ghost shifting after landing hard. Frame is solid and has taken a beating well
Weaknesses:
The Weiman (?) rims were way to weak for me, even in my lighter weight days. Brakes squeak. RST shocks look like crap and and to squishy on landings. Saddle nose wore out fast (and just general geometry of the saddle felt like I was being sodomized by a rhino)

Unlike many mountain bikers, I am still reluctant to throw down $1,600.00 for a BIKE. I am honest and realize I will never race, or be sponsored. SO... for the money, this bike is wonderful. Plus with the low end components, I have had a lot of fun replacing them! The brakes did squeal for awhile there, but they stopped after about 6 months (worn in?). I am not nice to this bike ( I'm over 200lbs. as well), I ride very hard and go on difficult trails (Razorback's Faceplant is a challenge)and this bike has held up fairly well over the last two years. This year it needs some TLC over the winter to make it a couple of more years. If you don't ride a lot or not very hard this bike will last you for quite a few years.

Great Frame!! Cool Color!! Very fast if you put on proper tires. Rides wonderful and smooth on and off road.
Weaknesses:
Horrible assembly done by the shop!! They put on the wrong brake pads on, which made the bike's front brakes squeal. If you want it done right, change the PADS or get new brakes!!!! Also, the front forks and shocks stiffened up after the first six months of use and are too heavy. Brakes: Awful. Derailers: Adeqauate. Tires: Too fat for me, but very durable. Handle bars: needs improvement. Gear Shifts: Ok, but they are not fast enough when you want to climb.

This bike is a very good bike!! If you are a rider that loves to go on and off road this bike is adaptable. It is a good beginner bike for the money. The frame is awsome!! Strong, smooth, and fast. However, you might want to consider upgrading the componets on this bike to make it lighter and fast.

Frame is Great! Generic V-Brakes are actualy very good! SRAM ESP 5.0 works as good, or better than LX stuff I had in the past. The Bonti. Jones Tires are very good of XC and light Free Riding.
Weaknesses:
Wheels - Too light and flimsy for a big rider. Fork - The RST 280, is by far the bset fork for that price range (will handle even a clidesdale like me without braking or excesive flex) it would probably be your first upgrade (if you don't brake the wheels first)

Bike Setup:
22.5" Trek 830al w Marzocchi Z3 QR20 Fork, Sun Rhyno/QR20 Front Wheel, Sun Mamoth/LX Rear Wheel, Kenda Kanetics 2.35 Tires.
Bottom Line:
Excelent frame! If you can't afford a whole wad of cash initialy for a bike this is the one to get. (the Trek 4500 Replaces it for 2001) The frame is the same geometry as the much more expensive Trek's, a bit heavier though, but that makes it super strong and stiff (I'm 6'6" 270lbs and it does not flex a bit on the toughest trails) The frame is worth upgrading components as you come apon more money (new fork, wheels, etc.) and end up with an awsome bike! You get the best componentry for this price range.
I owned 2 of these, the first I bought in the spring of '99, but it got stolen that fall, I liked it, and could not afford more, so I bough another one in the fall, and found there was a mid season frame change, the "1999.5" model has a replaceable derailer hanger, the "1999" does not.
Value is GREAT, but because the "light weight" wheels went "out of true" on the first ride (swaped out right after that so I would not destroy them) it I'll have to deduct for that overall.

Bad shifters, Down with Gripshift SDRAM!!!! The RST front suspension schocks belong in a junk pile. Already the rear dereilor takes about 30 seconds to shift from gear to gear. For quick shifting i have to shift up to a higher gear, then shift down, and all to get to a gear that is one higher than the one before. The RST shocks i blew the caps off somehow, and then all this mud and water got in the shocks. So as of now the shocks stick and barely compress, leaving the bike feel like a ridgid bike.

It does have a really nice shock and easy ride for the money. If you are new to the game this is the second best bike for the $$, buy a M60 to save yourself on the upgrades later. The tires are nice for both road and dirt if your a hybred like myself. With that in mind don't leave the shop with out bar ends, you will wish you had them later. This bike is a value ended bike and this should be remembered when the time comes for you to purchase a bike you want for fun not for racing.

Bottom Line:
Got the bike because of the frame. I could not afford to shell out one big lump sum for the 6500, so getting a bike with a great frame (same as most of the higher model Trek hardtails) will allow me to slowly upgrade the bike to compitition levels while I get in shape and have fun at the same time. This is my second 1999 830AL, I got a 1999 model in Febuary, but some F%&Ker stole it! I put some decent rims on that one, bit it is all lost now. :-\ So rather than being able to spend my money on a nice set of Judy or Bomber shocks, I had to go buy another stock bike a couple of weeks ago. :-( My new bike is the 1999.5 830AL, unfortunatly Trek (canada only?) skimped a bit on the half year update, replacing the stock aloy pedals with plastic, the Oasis handle bar with a generic one. :-/ The 1999.5 has a replacable derailer mount which was not on the previous bike, I've heard mixed reviews on that topic, but I knotice no diference in shifting, preformance or weight. So I am back to square one, waiting for the Weinmann rims to collapse (as the other ones did), and saving up to upgrade the shocks. It is a great bike, especialy for a big rider (I'm 6'6, 150lbs, on the 22.5 frame) the frame is excelent (light and strong), decent components, the RST shocks work great on all sizes of bumps, but lack a pre-load adjustment and have slower than usual re-bound time on the big ones. I recomend it to anyone who wants a good affordable bike that will be worth while upgrading in the future.Shorty :P

Overall the Bike Rocks for me, It just feels better than all the other bikes i looked at in this price range. I've ridden the Sh!t out of it and haven't had a problem yet. The bike was a good price but the components were something to be desired. I was in a serious accident b/c of the front derailer being to flexable. In this accident the RST shock was bent and one of my bar ends were mashed. Trek paid for the new components and now the bike is pretty good. However, the chain that came with the bike is crap (no biggy but it broke within a week of riding it.) Also, I am going to change the ESP 5.0 rear derailer. It's already starting to give me trouble shifting. All in all the bike is pretty good now and will be great when I'm finished pumping more money into it. I would suggest saving yourself the headache and spend a little more for a bike with better components, if you are a serious trail rider.

Mongoose Dx5.0; no stores have them, and this fuji; that was just plain lame. Overall it's an awesome bike. Choose this if u can't spend over 450$

When I got it, the shifters were completely out of whack, well beyond normal cable strech, and the headset was messed up, but after some service and upgrades, I love the bike. Lose the RST though.
I got this bike as a cheap kid, but as my tastes expanded, I upgraded the fork and brakes, then the saddle. Now, this is a supreme rig for ripping the local trails. It could afford to lose some weight, though. All in all, a nice ride from the geniuses at Trek. I'll give it five chilis for its performance with my setup, but the stock bike only deserves three or four.

I've had the bike for about 6 months. I upgraded the shifters to STX/RC Rapid fire and an LX derailer. The bike is very smooth and handles the trails well. The RST 281 fork works fine and stays consistant, even when it gets cold. The only problem with the bike, are the rims. I've bent two back rims already and replaced them with Ryno Lites with LX hubs. For $399 this bike is a very good entry level bike. If it wasnt for the rims it would get 5 Habeneros.

The SRAM 5.0 gripshifters and derailer shifts great, shocks work great for a big guy (6'6, 230 lbs), light riders probably will not take advantage of the full 2.6 travel. Only my improvement from stock (so far) are some nice light weight Tranz X long bar-ends and I will soon be upgrading the brake pads, I'm not sure what they are stock, but they sure squeel when wet!
