Bike Setup:

Bottom Line:
I ride this bike each day for exercise only and try for 14 miles per day weather permitting. It is kept in door's and I bought it because it was made in the USA. Sorry you don't still do that with this model. Overall I am very proud that I made this choice and would consider another trek. Anyone who has a desire to buy a mountain bike should go for this model as it is durable and won't leave you walking.

Frame, frame, frame and frame! 9 speed cassette, good quality bb (still going strong in 2008) and fairly decent spec components. Good wheelset.
Weaknesses:
If you want to thrash it hard you will need to upgrade the components (forks, wheels, brakes and drivetrain)

Bottom Line:
I fell in love with this bike from the first time I rode it and I just can't bring myself to part with it, so I have just upgraded the components as they have worn out (or broken). Fitting a disc brake to the rear in Jan '08 was a challenge as there are no IS disc tabs on the frame, but an A2Z adaptor came to the rescue. I have hammered this frame for years and it just takes it all!

Incredible frame. Light and strong. I'm 6'4" and 210lbs. and I ride hard (lots of jumps). Frame is light (21.5") and moves nice. Great Black and red paint. Nice Bontrager stock wheels- still use ocasionally with Panaracer trailblaster 2.1 tires and stock casette.
Weaknesses:
Frame has none. Depending on the rider, some components could use upgrading.
Similar Products Used:
Ridden GT, Kona, and Trek Fuel.

Still have stock drive train- will switch to XT this summer. RockShox Duke XC U-Turn fork (great!!!). XT Rim Brakes and levers, Thompson Elite post, Easton EA70 stem and bars, Yeti bolt-on Grips, SPD 959 clipless, Mavic '03 crossride wheels, Kenda fat 2.35 tires (tubed tires installed w/o tube). Just got xt 8 speed cassette. Selle Italle ti gel seat.
Bottom Line:
Down tube is nice and fat. Frame is definately worth all of the upgrades. Stock components are pretty decent except for toe clips. Definately outgrew the Judy C fork. Great bike for all around rider. With some simple upgrades, can be a super racing bike with a real sharp and unique look.

Strengths:
Solid component choice for a stock bike- Trek put the good stuff where you need it (for the most part)
the frame is sweet, i've never had any kind of problems with it and i have put it through hell
Weaknesses:
The Bontrager Mavrick wheelset sucks- the spokes always come loose, and then bend and the rim is really weak- also easy to bend the rings on the crank set

Bottom Line:
It was my first good bike, i started racing on it. Then i started getting into this sport, i then started to become not satisfied with not having the top of the line parts, so i am slowly upgrading. If you want a good upgrade-able bike this is the one to get-if you can still find them.

The frame possesses great geometry for the entry level rider. It is light and stiff for the price paid. Good shifting, fork and wheelset for the money.
Weaknesses:
Crank and chainrings are weak. Front derailleur also low quality and sloppy.
Similar Products Used:

Bottom Line:
Great entry level cross country bike. A little heavy. If you want to race it would be well worth your while to swap out the fork and wheels for lighter ones. A more stretched out geometry would also be nice for racing but the 6500 geometry is efficent and comfortable for everyday riding. The stock Jones are great for all condition riding; much better than the Jones AC that Trek now stocks on many of its bikes. The Revolt SS that I just got are super fast(at least 2km/h faster than Jones overall) and handle well in all except excessive mud.
Best bike available for the price in my opinion. Don't buy a full suspension in this price range. Hard tail in this price range blow them away.

Bottom Line:
I'm very pleased with my decision to pick up a Trek. I was a little strapped at the time I got it, so I kept it pretty much stock until recently. Aside from being a bit hefty, the bike has served me well. The LX rear derailleur has given me a couple of issues, but a visit to East Coast Bicycles took care of that. I'm a big guy (6'2", 215lbs) and have not had any issues with durability. The Corvairs are solid and I've never bottomed out the Judy C.
I'll check in after I get all my new goodies bolted on. Next upgrade will be XTR brakes and calipers, XT rear derailleur, and XT shifters. I thought about trading up to the 8500, but the frame is pretty much the same. Once my Judy C gives up on me, I'll upgrade that and have pretty much the same bike. When I do get another bike, it will be a Trek.

Bottom Line:
This is my 3rd review... After a year of riding(about 7220km), I had to replace the following:
1. The Alvio Crankset(replaced at about 4000km) I replaced them as the big ring of the alivio crank was bent. Replaced it with a Deore.
2. The Rear Bontrager Hub(replaced at 7220km) Could not coast and engage anymore and lots of clanking sounds. Heard that it's a common problem with the hubs but unfortunately, it was not covered under warranty it was classified as wear and tear. Local Trek dealer was helpfull and offered to rebuild the wheelset with LX Hubs. The local Trek dealer also did mention that I also had the option to wait for the internals of hub to be sent to Singapore from the USA so that I need not rebuild the wheel but I needed new wheels fast since I have only one bike so I took the first option. Thanks to the DT spokes and Bontrager corvair rim I need not replace the whole wheelset... I just changed the hubs.
The bike has been giving me great rides for a year. Except for the some of the major problems I have listed above the bike has been a performing up to my expectations. Until I get my hands on an even more better performing bike or bikes, the 99 Trek 6500 is still going strong.

The MOST beautifull thing on the bike is the frame! I've got the dragonfly orange frame and I love it but don't seem to like the chipping paint(especially behind the wishbone monostay)... But it's purely cosmetic and nobody notices that part of the bike when all they see is the beautifull welding.

Bottom Line:
This is my second review for this bikes. I thought it was a great idea to make a overview of the bike after a year. First, I rode the bike in lot of conditions (sand, lot of mud, water -2 feet-, NO LONG ROAD. The Alivio crank burned after 6 months (middle ring) and have to change chain and sproket. Rear derailleur is too soft: LOT OF CHANCE YOU HAVE TO BREAK IT IF YOU HURT IT.(a log felt down on it!!!). Shifters are okay and precise, a little hard. Wheels and tires are excellent Bontrager. Hubs, ahhhhh, famous Bontrager hubs that nobody likes WORK GREAT!!!. You have to adjust them often, rear is subjected to drink water on freewheel side, but roll extremely well. The stem is too high. The fork is excellent; I made no maintenance (just put TRiFlow under boots sometime) and it work great. The frame IS REALLY solid, color is beautiful and tought, have a good flex and still not "craking" again (just put grease on the seatpost srew sometimes). The Alivio front derailleur IS STILL WORKING GREAT (I don't know why!!!). To be a perfect bike, I really recommand you these modifications: - LX brakes and levers (more powerful stopping) - Lower stem (Check Icon Onyx series)+ handlebar - Change the crankset (LX, STX-RC is good, but "creak" but no locking in mud - You have to change tires often because they go rapidly (but when they grip, they grip!!!) - Never forget to lubricate de housing and cables for rapid and precise shift - Put a dirt cleaner on rear cable - And for an EXTREME LOOKING, put THE black front XC fender (the red one is so-so)
These are bike that you have to clean often in all components to keep a good rolling. Mine is rolling has the first day, but need precision cleaning and tool to get the job done. You will have to spend 100 to 300$ (CAN) to keep your bike running well. It's a lot, but when you ride hard, it's the price to pay. An excellent choice that is the Trek 6500 ZX, and try to get the Orange dragonfly color with red Judy. GET IT N O W and R I D E !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The bike came with a good fork, frame and wheelset.. components are not really good for off-roading but they work alright.
After around 1000km(both road & off-road), my bike made lots of creaking sounds... I visited my LBS and they put in some green loctite.. but now after 2000km the creaking sound is back. I think, I'll just put up with the noise until I can't take it anymore.
But I must say, I'm pretty hard with all my bikes and I'm pretty surprised that my first aluminium bike can take all the "abuse". My previous bikes were all steel frames.
The loneliest, most desolate trail would be my favorite.
Duration Product Used:
3 months
Strengths:
It's an 8-speed.
Wheels haven't needed any truing after many hits and seals worked well even after 2 hours of riding in heavy downpours.
The Judy C did the job with no flex and very little maintenance.
The ride quality was very good. The aluminum frame isn't overly stiff like my ex. I can't say what brand it was because they sponsor this site.
It's disc-ready and it's almost time for a pair.
It comes spec'd with the correct crank length. All manufacturers should be doing this instead of just slapping on those 175's.
Cable routing was good for portaging and out of the way of the dirt.
Metallic black paint looks custom.
It fits like a glove.
It's not a hall-of-shamer.
Weaknesses:
Tried to break in the seat, but couldn't (yes, I'm sore).
Flat bar seems way too stiff for rocky trails. I'll switch to a riser before my wrists go South. It's also too narrow for for all those things you put on a handlebar.
The aluminum on the chainrings was too soft. A tooth on the middle ring became bent at 1000 miles and caused a clicking sound. Finding the replacement was, how should I put it, a sweaty b1tch. I found an aluminum one at Frankford, and a long lasting ti ring from Bruce Boone. That's right, a ti 4-arm middle ring!
Front shifting wasn't buttery smooth. It's a good thing I don't shift it constantly.
Rear shifting was crisp, but was thrashing my thumb. I had to flip over the shifter to get relief. It is now an 80's style top mount!
Quick releases rotate even after tightening. Knowing this is very scary when I'm downhilling.
Grips rotate
Teeth on cage pedals weren't sharp and grippy enough.
Similar Products Used:
Zaskar LE Pro 825 Apex
Bike Setup:
Currently has bar-ends and I'm switching to risers to avoid further injury to wrists.
I put slicks on it for faster rolling. A little less traction, yes, but it's a trade-off.
Doing OK with the stock generic brakes and seatpost that people love to hate.
Got an S-body geometry seat to replace that block of wood.
It's setup with a bent ring.
Bottom Line:
The headset was ridden with some play for hundreds of miles and didn't ovalize the headtube. It was at last tightened with no complaints. Don't try this on your bike.
The ride quality was the same or better than a high-end hardtail I had!
I liked it so much, I'll get the same model in the future if that 9-speed ever proves itself as off-road worthy as an 8.

I bought the 1999 Trek 6500 since it was a good deal and I like the way it rides. I really wanted the 2000 Trek 7000 (lighter, better components), but could not justify paying an extra $300 for it. I think the seat is just fine, not as rock hard as the Rock Hopper's seat. I switched to clipless pedals based on numerous reviews here. So far I am really enjoying this bike, much better than the old Trek 930.

This is the best you can get. I have rode more expensive bikes and i can't tell the difference. It fells great, on of those things that when you are on it for the first time you know that it was meant for you. I have beat it up pretty hard, and nothing has gone bad. Best thing that you can get. I upgraded the bike after recieveing it as a gift. I put on a lighter saddle, and stronger Avid SD 2.0 brakes. In addition, I switched the heavy stock stem with a Kore stem with its five-degree angle, gave the bike a more race-like feel.
Bottom Line:
This bike has to be one of the best values out there. The Bontrager Corvair wheelsystem, inaddition to looking beautiful, are durable and light. The drivetrain works without flaw or complaint. the Judy XC fork is the mainstay of the Rock Shox line, and it performs that way. It soaks up the bumps on the trails with ease and confidence. The highlight of the bike, however, must be the frame. It is made of Trek's Alpha ZX aluminum. The frame is incerdibly light for an $800 bike; at 3.6 pounds, you can't beat it. It is wonderfully rigid and stiff, it rides beautifullly, plus it comes with disk brake mounts. The Trek 6500 is one of the greatest bikes on the market. It provides an excellent package at a price that will blow away any other supposed values. I can't think of enough superlatives to describe the 6500!

CRANKS! B.B., brakes, saddle, pedals, riding position is too upright (easy fixes for most)
Bike Setup:
I bought this bike because it was on sale for $525 and it had a great frame and decent fork, with alot of potential. The day I bought it I put on a set of clipless pedals (Ti for $60, thanks Ritchey) and flipped the stem over for a better position. (I like being stretched out). Later I switched the brakes and levers for xt/xtr's and replaced the cranks with the new xt hollowtech's and the BB that goes with it. I took that horrible saddle off and put on an old avocet Ti I had lying around. Now, the bike weighs a s#!tload less and performs a lot better.
Bottom Line:
After investing about the difference in price between the '99 and '00 model, i've got a great bike that will go the distance of any pricier bike and spent a lot less doing it. The only thing that could still use changing is the fork, 5 lbs is a lot, but it works great and I'll switch it when it breaks, or can afford it. All in all, a great ride for ANYONE looking to get a new, old bike.

Strengths:
After a one month break-in period (strech cables, fork springs, brake pads, and spoke stretch) 1. weight/strength of frame=with all the jumps and hard riding I have done, you can't tell. 2. Price=since my previous bike was stolen, I have been scouring the mountain bike magazines trying to get set up to biuld a bike, I walked in to a Trek dealership and saw a 6500. It was on sale for $600. What you get is a solid mix of reliable alloy components. I will probably only spend $200 more dollars to upgrade to the bike of my dreams. 3. Other notale pluses=rims, bar, seatpost, stem, paint(love the paint, even my "can't understand how you could spend $600 for a bike with no motor" loves the look of this bike)
Weaknesses:
I changed the seat on the third day I bought the bike. In an effort to make this bike more affordable, Trek speced the worst seat I have ever ridden on. The second day I had the bike I could go trail riding on it.
paint chipped on the way back home from the dealership in the back of my truck.

Bontrager Saddle 7. Kalloy Seatpost 8. Icon clipless Pedals The rest of the components are the same as the stock bike. I changed the stem at the LBS for a zero degree Icon Stem
Bottom Line:
A great bike for the price. I found the bike uncomfortable at the beginning but the more I rode the 6500 the more I appreciated the feel of the bike. The bike is not light.. it weighs almost the same as my old Trek 800 sport.. this is probably due to the Judy C fork which weighs at around 5 pounds.
The Judy C fork eats the trail really well and is really stiff since I have eliminated the front brake squeal which had on my Trek 800 with a RST 261 fork.
The components require minimum maintainance but provide maximum performance.
The frame will probably last me a long time.... I needed a bike which could do anything I want it to do and the Trek 6500 came out tops.

Derailers needed adjustment after about 1 month of use, but was already forewarned about this at the bike shop (since I had a free 1 yr service contract, this was really not a problem). I have had no problems with this bike and have put it through quite alot of abuse, including jumps and fairly technical downhill. At the price I paid, I couldn't find a better bike. I would recommend this bike to anyone starting out in Mountain biking - especially those on a budget. Since many bike shops already have the new year's models in, may be a good time to find a real deal.

Strengths:
Alpha ZX Frame has great geometry, handles very well, Wheelset kicks!, Overall components mix great value for price.
Weaknesses:
Rock Shox Judy C - It would be A LOT better if they supplied this bike with the 80mm Judy C! As it is I'm going to have to do the upgrade ASAP!
Completely stock, but I'm getting a riser bar (which I guess they're supplying on the 2000 bike), some new platform pedals (the stock ones suck without the toe clips - and I hate toe clips), and the Judy C 63-80mm Upgrade Kit.
Bottom Line:
This is an absolutely great bike for the money (I paid $625) and has an outstanding component mix. This weekend was a rough ride for me and I did 5 Face-Plants and watched my bike go whizzing over my head more than once - It held up Great! - My only advice is to get sealed cables for your brakes and shifters if you're planning on using this thing in adverse conditions - mud, snow, sand - my rear derailler was starting to stick really bad by the end of the ride. I rode just about everything I could get my hands on in this price range, and I went back to the Trek!

- Responsive handling - Excellent frame for the money - Sublimely well-balanced frame geometry

- Fork is good, but could be a bit better - Nice component mix, but I'd like to see more money put into the deraileurs and fork than into the wheelsets, which are just too much (IMHO)

Bottom Line:
This is a semi-low-end great bike. I bought it cause it's the cheapest ZX Aluminum frame in the Trek line. It has a good mix of components and handles wonderfully. The most amazing thing about the bike is how well balanced it all is . . . I feel totally free in the saddle. Shifting my weight any-which-way is easy as cake. Basically - my butt is liberated, and that totally makes navigating obstacles, in a split second, fast-ass! Since the frame is so good - it's totally worth it to upgrade. It might not be a $3,000 downhill machine, but for what it is - it kicks ass.

Bottom Line:
I tried all the equivalent bikes while shopping around. I am 6'0 and 190 lbs. This bike fit me the best, had the best components for the price. Rides nice - doesn't feel weak or cheap. I have put 250 miles on this bike in 3 months. All I have had to do was lube it and tighten some bolts, and adjust the brakes. I can't ride this thing enough! I have raced it once (got 5th - I am out of shape). This bike is awesome. At appx 29 pounds - the bike is a little heavy for a XC racer - but if you weigh what I weigh - it doesn't matter!! I needed to lose 10 pounds myself. I would buy it again. I have crashed several times (twice hard) and the bike seems indestructible! I jumped back on with blood coming out of me and the bike continued flawlessly! I have heard some shifting noise from the rear cassette/derailuer on steep uphills - but it shifted anyway. I intend to updgrade the rear cassette and derailler if it ever gives up. I will also put a nine speed on it. GO BUY THIS BIKE! I paid $679 and a week later the bike shop knocked $50 off cause they had a sale! Can't get a better bike for the money in my opinion.

MY ONLY BEEF IS THAT IT SEEMS TO REQUIRE A BIT TO WIDE OF A RADIUS AROUND TURNS, BUT THAT IS A SMALL PRICE TO PAY. Bottom Line:
I purcahsed the Trek 6500ZX last year, since that time the frame has performed flawlessly. There is a good bit of engineering and design behind this frame. The geometry and fit are excellent. Agility, weight, and stiffness are superb. Trek's paint job can really take a licking. Although the frame lacks disc brake compatibility, it is nevertheless a fantasic frame to build and upgrade upon. Quality piece of work. The material and geometry of the 6500 is identical to the 7000, and only slightly different from the high-end Treks (8000, 8500, 8900), of course with the same key features: replaceable derailleur hanger, monostay, fat chainstay, elliptical downtube, long toptube. Composed of Trek's proprietary Alpha aluminum.Components are fairly good for the price range, however if you begin to get serious with riding, you'll definitely want to change more than a number of compoenents, starting with the Indy C fork. Clipless pedals and bar ends would also be a welcome addition for the cross-country rider. Other components are satisfactory and do get the job done. However if you are looking to improve performance, definitely do some upgrading of the components, afterall the frame is fantastic and is surely a keeper. In summary, the frame is fantastic. I might even consider it a steal. Components bundled OEM with this bike are so-so.
