Favorite Trail:McDowell in Arizona
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $550.00
Purchased At:Jay's Cyclery
Strengths:Can withstand a lot of abuse. Shifters and rear deurailler are awesome. No problems with brakes.
Weaknesses:MAD chainsuck, caused by a crappy front deurailler and the crankset.
Similar Products Used:Trek 8000
Bike Setup:Basically everything that came with the bike, except a WSD saddle.
Bottom Line:For 550 bucks, I must say that I am totally satisfied with this bike. I can ride it for hours on end and it holds up to any abuse I can dish out on it. If you already know that you are really into off-road riding, you may as well spend more money for a better bike, but if you are just starting out in the sport (like I was when I bought the 6000), then this is definitely a good place to start. You can pretty much take it on any cross-country trails you can think of, and you can ride it nice and hard too.

Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Purchased At:$600
Strengths:Great handling, nice ride, pretty good in the mud, light weight, great on the road and on the trail, can pick up to a pretty nice speed.
Weaknesses:Have had some trouble with the gears. Had to replace the rear shifter with the Shimano Deore LX. Not too bad suspension with the Jett T2 fork. But this bad boy would kick ass with a Judy fork. Wish it had a better pick-up.
Similar Products Used:Cannondale Jekyll 800, Cannondale Gemeni 1000, Specialized Enduro
Bottom Line:This bike is a work horse. I've put this toy to the limit. I've had to replace the shifter after damaging it. I still have trouble with the gears but after doing a little work with them, it turns out to be fine. You can take the 6000 pretty much anywhere except off of high drops. I've done mud pits, bowls, creeks, jumps, small drops, rocks, sand, road, grass, everything. This bike has taken it all. The frame looks like new after over 3 years of abuse. I have flipped countless times, once smashing the head set and bar down on a rock. The only thing that broke was the head light i had installed seperately. This bike is built like a rock. With the alpha aluminum frame, it is very light. If your in line of buying one, do so because you won't regret it.

Date Reviewed: October 28, 2001
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Strengths:Gears, Components, braking, fork, frame
Weaknesses:high speed handling, the steering can sometimes have a mind of its own if you hit a really big obstacle (root/rock)
Similar Products Used:another hardtail from specialized
Bike Setup:RoxShox Jett Fork, Shimano V brakes, Topeak rack, Blue + White paint, Aluminum frame, trek seat handlebars and stem
Bottom Line:I love this bike! I have abused it worse then anyone else probably has, often riding down steep hills at around 35MPH on sidewalks in my suburban area. The shocks work great, and this bike can handle anything. I have only gotten one flat, and have put about 1500 very hard miles on it and the tires are still in good shape, in addition to the brakes. Front brakes are slightly more worn then back brakes, but both work great. I have done a lot of hard stops with the front brakes, since I am into doing front wheelies, and still have almost a year left on the pads. The biuld quality is excellent, with all name-brand components. The alumninum frame is surprisingly light and gives a fairly good ride on the rear end. The bike handles well, but not great. Upwards of 25MPH if your going to do a quick turn be ready to wrench the handle bars and pray, high speed handling isnt great. However, the handling isn't great, but for some unknown weird reason this bike is funner to drive then any other hardtail Ive ever been on. The handling is tight, and its very easy to lean into curves or do fast slaloms. In Addition, I love the wide gearing especially for such an old bike.

Bottom Line:I like the frame, and I think that any beginner who wants to start mountain biking should consider the Trek 6000. I have a lot of fun with this bike, but I had to replace the bottome bracket and the crank because I bent them both. I only weigh 150, but I was doing some big drops for a xc bike. I will soon replace the front suspension.

Bike Setup:Bontrager bar ends. M536 pedals. Bontrager fs 10 saddle
Bottom Line:Great bike for beginners. If you want to abuse the bike, then it can handle any terrain. With the amount of punishment I gave it, Im surprised it still is good as new. I would of course upgrade on the pedals, saddle, seatpost, and if you can afford it, shifters. I would have gotten a Trek 7000 or 8000 if I had the money, but with $450, a good price for someone new at mountain biking. Too much money was spent on upgrades. Buy it if you ride only on weekends.

Bottom Line:This is an excellent bike for people who think they might enjoy off-road riding, but don't want to waste money if they don't like it. I bought this bike just before moving to Ausin in anticipation of doing some serious off-road riding. It has proven to be one of the better bikes I've ridden. I'm a heavy rider (235 lbs.), but find the frame plenty stiff; even for the roughest of downhills. The fork, however, is VERY weak. I tend to ride technical trails and it can't handle the hits from large drops. I'll be upgrading soon to a Psylo SL. There are very few original parts on the bike which goes to show that it's also a good platform for upgrades. Yeah, I could have spent more money on a 7000 or 8000, but the most important difference between these bikes is the frame weight. You save maybe half a pound on the higher end frames. Components can be replaced and upgraded; the frame fit/feel is the most important aspect of ANY bicycle.

Just as a testimonial to Trek's build quailty, the bike fell off the rack on my car while I was doing about 40 m.p.h. in rush hour traffic. Thanks to a friend following me (thanks John F.!!) it didn't get run over. After replacing the rear derailer hanger, the bike still doesn't have a creak or rattle in it.

Strengths:this bike has wonderful fornt suspension. The price is perfect for this type of bike.this bike can really take a beating under harsh trails. I travel many long miles with it and it holds up great. Alos the treck 6000 is easy to make upgrades on. This bike is great for anybody who wants alot of fun a dust on there close. x country riders to down hill hardcore riders have rode my bike, its really a great all around bike for the alla round biker.
Weaknesses:The seat is not the best. The brakes are kinda bad for long rides but work great for downhills. Shifting is kinda stiff but is udjustable.

Weaknesses:Rims, crank, front der.
Bike Setup:stock, except for icon stem, bar ends, kenda front tire (original was burned), seat, soon to be front wheel
Bottom Line:this is a great bike. It is a durable frame but mine sure shows it's battle scars. After reading a lot of the reviews i see that a lot of people liked the rims. Maybe i got a defective one. I don't ride to extreme trails but a spoke is bursting up through the front rim. The wheel is as true as it will go and still hits the brake pads. Other than that this is a great bike.I took it to Stowe, Vermont and staid at the Trapp Family Lodge. THe lodge is right on a mountain. Anyone who tells you this bike dosn't climb well is wrong. I am not very strong and climbed 1600' feet on this bike without to much problem. Its not as good for descending. THe geometry is a bit lax and so it is not as stable. It feels good under speed though. The manitou fork rules.

Strengths:great value for price, one of few bikes can get in 22.5" frame, takes a beating
Weaknesses:Jett fork, front der
Similar Products Used:Rocky Mountain Oxygen Race
Bike Setup:stock except Time pedals, Body Geometry saddle, susp. post, Sugino crank
Bottom Line:This is a one year follow up to my review last fall. Since the last review, haven't lost any more parts. The front derailer getting to be on it's last legs, crank is a little cranky, and my opinion of the Jett shock has changed a bit over the long term...it's just not beefy enough for me (however, I am a definative Clydesdale). The shock also gets pretty mushy when it gets hot. Overall, it's held up pretty well for the beating I've given it. I've even raced it a couple times without any breakdowns. I'd have to give it a very hearty recommendation to entry level mountain bikers...it's been a great bike for me to learn on. The stuff that I'd complain about, such as weight, precise shifting and braking, etc., aren't fair things to complain about at this price range (got a taste of some of those things when I rented the Rocky)... if you want a <25 lb. bike with LX/XT components, you're in the wrong price range. Anyway after riding it over the long term, I'm going to bump up my overall rating a from a 3 to a 4 (5 is pretty tough to achieve in my eyes)

Strengths:Quality for price. Shocks perfect for trail and urban riding. Nice rims and tires.
Weaknesses:Saddle, paint? (earth tones would be nice). Shifting to the big gear.
Similar Products Used:Raleigh M80, Schwinn Moab 3
Bike Setup:Stock with end bars ($25)
Bottom Line:Great for the price! I haven't really given it a beating yet, just road it around Liberty State Park to break it in a little (coblestone). I'm not too agressive of a rider, so I don't see the need for more expensive shocks. The Manitou suit me quite well and are better than the Jetts offered on other bikes in the budget range.

As far as shifting goes, it works great except it is a little slow getting into the big gear.

If you are a new rider, definately buy this bike or at least try it. It should all be a matter of preference, but if you don't want to overkill on the excessories, the bike has a great track record for quality and price.

Finally, what is with all of the paint jobs on all (most) bikes today! I think all the bike companies I looked at need to hire new art directors.

Strengths:Fork is fine for me (RS T2), rear derailluer, wheels and tires, Frame.....great!
Weaknesses:front derailluer(tunes out easy, in once already), grips
Bike Setup:1999, RS T2 fork, LX rear, Acera front derailluer, cranks, and rapid fire shifters, bontrager jones tires, wheels.
Bottom Line:Awesome bike! Bike is great for me, just starting out and riding almost exclusively off road in New England (lots of rocks and roots). In fact this bike has saved my a** a couple of times when it held up after I f***ed up! The fork works great for me. Great bike for the price, which I won't mention since I paid less than anyone else here! I would recommend it to anyone one looking for a first off-road bike. If you are a bike snob, this one might not get you to the promise land, but you won't looking at this price anyway. Can't beat the price, even at 100 dollars more than I paid! I love this thing!

Strengths:Shocks are really good but do not tighten, the frame kicks major butt, brakes respond well, hubs are good, wheels and rims are also pretty good.
Weaknesses:The front derailler sucks; sometimes when you want to go from 2 to 3, it won't go! The shocks do not tighten at all, the skewers have broke on me, the grips are good but break easily because the bike does not come with end caps, and the seat is too cheap.

Bottom Line:Really really good bike for the cost. Good for beginners and advanced. Some of the components can be upgraded easily. However, if you spend another two hundred on components, you might as well have just saved it up and spent $700 on a better bike That's what I would've done. GREAT FRAME! If you're only willing to spend around $500, buy the Trek 6000!

Similar Products Used:Cannodale, Trek 6500
Bike Setup:Stock + New saddle, and XTR front railer
Bottom Line:It is a great beginning bike, it can take a beating, The saddle has to go, it is junk, and you will want to up-grade your front derailer to a XTR. Cranks are o.k., maybe need to up-grade but for 500 dollars cannot be beat. Don't listen anyone else the front shocks are killer!!! for a $500 bike. I am a big guy 250lbs and it handels great, i have beaten it and it keeps on coming back for more. It has no-name brakes but surprisingly to me they are pretty damn good, you though may think about up-grading to something a little better. I am very happy with it and will probably upgrade it no more, I will ride for about 1000 miles then replace it with another Trek I am very pleased with Trek products I have been riding along time, and have riden all sorts of bikes, Treks are great and the 6000 is impressive for $500 dollars, enjoy and ride safe, remember you CAN beat the 6000 to the ground, but does need some little upgrade, Get a new saddle before you leave the store

Strengths:EZ to upgrade, stout alum frame, nice arsenal of parts for the beginer and sleek hot rod red paint job
Weaknesses:Handle bar stem is not made for uphill climbs, hubs are not water tight, seat feels like it came off a Huffy and cheesy plastic pedals.
Similar Products Used:Diamond Back-Seronto
Bike Setup:Cat Eye-Enduro, Shimono-LX brake set, WTB SST seat, Titec-Lil al stem, Titec-Hellbent bars, upgraded alum bearing pedals and WTB-Velosoraptor tires.
Bottom Line:Although this is not the radical down hill extreme ride with 8 inches of travel or the super light weight 15 pound cross country ride... this is a fun noteworthy ride and saves you about $2500!!!
So to the weekend warrior that does'nt have $3000 dollars to blow on a ride (like me) this is a deal. In the heart of the bike beats a strong well ballanced alum frame. The frame's angles are made for all around performance, so the biek is a Jack of all trades and master of none. To smooth out the bumps, Rockshoxs Jett once set properly does a nice job. Although the Jett is no Sid, remember $500 vs $3000! The drive tran feature a mix of Deore and LX parts which serve the purpose, but as they go move up to LX and XT combo. Where the rubber meets the road has some nice wheels and tires, but they hubs don't like water crossings. Bottom of the bottom line is this is a ride seriously worth the price tag, that performs like it should!

Similar Products Used:Fisher Tassajera, Specialized Rockhopper, Giant Iguana
Bike Setup:ATI grips, Salsa barends, Titec stem, intend to get a new saddle
Bottom Line:I did my research on this one...this is the best $500 I have ever spent--no question. The quality of the construction is very high and I really like the way the bike looks. I am pretty much an every day rider as this bike serves as my primary means of transportation. I have been really impressed with how it has stayed tight thru all the (ab)use it has been taking. There are some weak spots in the components but $500 can only get you so much. The rear der is very good- never had any problems with it..The front der on the other hand is a little sketchy-it got out of tune in a hurry. The Manitou Magnum is a good shock-certainly better than the cheesy Jetts that most entry level bikes come with. Nevertheless it's only *just* good enough to make you realize how much better it could be. In any event the 6000 is the perfect entry level bike. I love it and have zero regrets

The front der did cause me to take a trip back to the bike shop, but a little tweaking worked out the kinks. And let's face it, for $500 you don't usually get much anymore. For someone who wants to ride hard 2-3 times a week on a really solid, light, and responsive bike you get a lot of bang for your buck here. I love this bike so much I just sneaked my wifes bike out of the garage and traided it in on the 6000 WSD. Maybe this way, she'll ride with me more often ;)

The Shimano front Shimano brake pads screeched loudly no matter how they were toed. My dealer replaced them with a pair of Tektros which are execellent and solved the screeching problem. That said, this bike has a lot going for it. It is extremely stable under all riding conditions and the Bontrager Jones tires are an excellent compromise for most riding condition. Where this bike excels, however in handling which is incomparable. I always feel secure on this bike no matter what the terrain or riding condition. So far other than the broke rear de-railer and a bent drop down (my fault) the bike has held up to some pretty hard miles. There are definitly better bikes ou there but not at $ 550

Bottom Line:Great overall bike for the price. Key word-overall. If you want to take the bike piece by piece you can certainly say that many of the components suck, the frame is too stiff, the brakes suck etc... Keep in mind though, this is a bike in the price range of low 500s. It is not going to have top of the line components. I had $450 to spend and this was actually over my range, but the frame and front shock were too much better than the 4500 to pass up. Over time, I will simply upgrade individual components. This way you don't shell out 2grand at once. Bottom line - excellent overall package for the price but the components are far below what experienced riders and racers are looking for.

Sure it has its flaws, like a front derailer that won't work right and no name brakes, but hey, what bike doesn't, and we are talking about a $530 bike here. This bike is a nice bike to do future upgrades. I did a couple of months of intensive research and this was the best bike for the $500 price range, at least in aluminum frames. The other bikes I tried were great also, with exception of the Tassajara, but I prefer the stiffness of aluminum over cro-moly.

The seat should be replaced immediately, your local LBS may switch it out for you if you ask. The front derailluer sucks so bad it needs to go the day you get it, at least move to an LX even better XTR. The Acera crankset are ok but I bent them in a crash along with the handlebars so I upgraded to LX cranks and Kore lite handlebar. I am going in for my new bike tune-up next week and it is extremely over due. Bottom line good bike but some low line compnents upgrade these and you're ready to go.

Weaknesses:
durability problems
Bike Setup:
stock setup except Sugino crank
Bottom Line:On the positive side, I've taken this bike on some pretty rough stuff and it's handled well...it really has been a kick to ride. It usually does everything I need it to. On the negative side, I've been through a lot of repairs. I had a huge problem with chain suck, which was eventually solved when the crank was replaced with a Sugino (which has worked surprisingly well, given all the horror stories I've read...it's actually better than the Acera the bike came with). I've had some problems with breaking spokes on the rear...eventually requiring a rebuild of the back (under warranty). The front has behaved pretty good after the last truing. I've also gone through a shifter, and destroyed the saddle (partially from a wreck, the nose started to bend before I finished the job off). I've also probably had it back to the dealer for more than it's fair share of adjustments. Granted, I'm pretty big (240-250), so I probably wear on a bike a little more than the average bear. As far as the Rock Shox Jett, I don't think it's as bad a unit as everyone else is making it out to be. My only real complaint is that it could be stiffer. They should put a shock with a stiffer elastomer on a 22 1/2 bike, since you're probably going to only sell them to large mutants like myself. Overall...I'd probably say 4+ for the time I've spent on the bike, and 2- for the repairs I've had done...averaging out to about a 3. The price is right. One thing about advise to buy it and upgrade it...If I had the green to upgrade, I probably would've bought a more expensive bike to start with...so if you plan on riding really hard, you may want to spend an extra buck or two.

For a bit above 500, you can't go wrong. The new Manitou front suspension greatly improves on the '99 6000 (already a great bike despite the Jett T2).
Later on, drop a few bucks to replace the front der's to LX or above and you get affordable high performance!
This bike rides well and steers accurately through fast singletrack or steep technicals.
Sure, you can spend twice the $$$ on a more upscale bike, but with the 6000's performance and value, it can't get to be twice as good as this!

Going from a rigid Schwinn (pre shocks), it's like an Escort to a Cadilac! Trek has done a good job. And I had been warned to stay away from the conglomerants (Kelin Fisher Trek, et. al.)
And, I too have taken a few spills - although I blame it on going from a 12 year old, 73lb, cro-mo Schwinn to a new Aluminum.

Bottom Line:I was having a very hard time choosing a bike, having obsessed on it for the better part of three weeks, and test-ridden 5 or 6 bikes. Most of the bikes in the $500 price range have significant tradeoffs, whether it's a cromoly frame, lesser derailleurs and brakes, etc. I guess at that price point its to be expected, and it seems you have to pay another $200 or so to make much of a difference, so I was already resigned to some low-end stuff that I would upgrade as it broke. One thing that all the bikes I looked at shared were the awful Rock Shox Jett front forks (including the 1999 Trek 6000). As a 230 lb. rider, I would have been better off with a rigid front fork than one of those pieces of crap. So imagine how happy I was when my LBS told me that the only 21 6000 they had in stock was a 2000 model year that had a version of the Manitou SX on the front. What a difference!! This shock has significantly more travel and is much more plush than anything else offered as stock in this price range. It made my decision to purchase the 6000 a no-brainer, and it made my first ride last night a true pleasure.Besides a switch to alloy pedals instead of resin, I believe the Manitou is the only change from the 1999 6000. IMO, though, considered with the Alpha aluminum frame, the LX rear derailleur, and a price of $520, this bike stands far above the others in its price range, and I stopped worrying about moving upmarket. I don't know what the other manufacturers have in mind for the 2000 model year, but unless they make some significant upgrades this Trek rules at this price point.I give it five flamin' wiener dogs.

But if you intend to go even SOMEWHAT hardcore in your riding, and strive to be anything but a weekend warrior, then SPEND MORE. Go up to a 7000 or, better yet, get a Rockhopper FS, which comes well spec'd for the price with LX and assorted other better parts. My time spent with the 6000 has been good overall, but many memorable biking experiences have been soured by mechanical faliures. After six weeks of ownership, my rear rim tacoed, off of a CURB, no less. During last season, I went through components: shifters, a crankset, a seatpost, and the shock never worked well at all, despite relubing, reinstallation of bumpers and disassembly. It was almost a relief when it broke and I threw on a rigid fork. I had just gotten rid of almost two pounds of dead weight. If you own this bike, enjoy it. If you are a weekend warrior and want an cheaper trail bike, maybe this is your bike. But for a six-foot-two sport-class racer who tries to ride every second day, instead of replacing all of the crappy components, I should have screwed my head on straight and spent good money to begin with.

Strengths:
responsive frame, good value, bontrager tires, brakes, good serious entry level bike for the price
Weaknesses:
acera front dr- suck suck suck, alivio cranks, jett t2
Similar Products Used:
GT,Schwinn,K2,Trek 930
Bike Setup:
stock
Bottom Line:Pretty good bike for the money, no regrets about buying two(wife+myself).Fun bike to ride, and it has good upgrade potential.Good thing, cause that acera dr is the worst dr I have EVER used and the alivio crankset is way to flimsy.Jett T2 seems to work OK for my wife, but she doesn`t go off the bike paths either. I`d be just as happy with a rigid fork on my bike the way this one works, but in all fairness I do weigh 260# and I ride anywhere that looks interesting. The adjustments on this fork are apparently for looks only and the heavy spring kit that Rock Shox advertises doesn`t really exist.Ordered a Z2 BAM,that should do the trick. Nice handling frame with nice paint, but some of the welds look like they were done by a monkey, seems strong though. This could have been a really great bike if Trek hadn`t taken the cheapest way out on a few of the components. I mean what the hell, at $525, this isn`t a department store bike Trek. I give it four flaming democrats!

Bottom Line:I love this bike. It's the same design as the 1999 model, but upgrades were made on the front suspension and pedals. The bike now comes stock with a Manitou SX fork, a step up from the Rock Shox Jett. The pedals are now alloy instead of resin, a nice upgrade. For ~$540, this bike is unbeatable. I would definitely recommend it to anybody. The frame is a keeper for upgrades and I am quite pleased with all components and parts. To get the same quality frame and components with any other company, you would have to spend way more. Congrats to Trek on a well made & good looking bike.

Bottom Line:Not bad for the money. However if you're really into biking, save up and get a 7000 (or at least a 6500). If you want a better value, get Trek's ChroMo bike. The weight is similar anyway. It's always nice to get a steel feel too. Even the store salespeople steered me away from this bike last year, despite the fact they weren't selling very well.

Strengths:
Bontrager Jones Tires
Rapidfire Shifters
Frame Size Selection
Weaknesses:
Heavy for Aluminum
Harsh ride
Rock Shox JET T2
Brake levers too small
Similar Products Used:
Trek 830
Cannondale F600
Bike Setup:
Original components with no modifications
Bottom Line:The Bontrager Jones tires are a nice compromise for most riding, though I prefer the lower rolling resistance of the Revolt ST2's that come on the 8000). Shimano's Acera Front Derailer works surprisingly well, and the LX rear derailer does its job. The pedals with clips and straps may not be state of the art but they accomodate my big size 16 feet nicely. I also appreciate the fact that they flip immediately to the platform side w/o clips when I need to remove my foot, yet easily flip to the side with clips when I want to clip in again. On the downside, the 6000 is somewhat hefty. Higher series models use the lighter zxAlpha aluminum, 6000 and 830al models use Alpha Aluminum. But the 6000 was the highest aluminum model in Trek's hardtail line that came in my size (22.5 in). Handling is very good under all conditions, braking is adequate, but the brake levers themselves are too small and the handlebar is too wide for use w/o bar ends. The Trek 6000 rides harshly and the Rock Shock Jett T2 does little to dampen the harshness. Yet, the whole somehow adds up to more than the sum of its parts.

Bottom Line:test rode this p.o.s. because i was interested in the 7000 and wanted to be sure of the frame size. i guess the frame is ok but the brakes and front derailler suck a$$. brakes squeal like a pig and the front derailleur isn't smooth at all. i guess not a bad bike but i expected more for the money. i am not even considering the 7000 now because the ride sucked so bad. i'm sticking with my original choice of a marin rocky ridge.

Maybe some uprgrading is wanted since the bike came with alivio parts etc. After 1 year i broke the rear rim, and had to change the casette+chain. I am happy with it.
