Submitted by Mark a Racer from NH
Date Reviewed: April 10, 2004
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $1500.00
Purchased At:Goodale's
Strengths:Light, fast, great suspension, great wheels, great brakes. It's pretty awesome
Weaknesses:Bontrager cranks, pedals, seatpost, tires and saddle. The bike was built by a moron
Similar Products Used:Gunnar Rockhound, 2001 Trek 8500
Bike Setup:Stock except for crank (new XT) and tires (Conti explorer pro)
Bottom Line:I just got back from my first race with the Fuel and it's awesome! I resisted going to full suspension for a long time and told myself I'd ride a steel hardtail for all my days. Well, I found the fuel on closeout and it was hard to resist. The bike climbs incredibly well, descends incredibly well, and doesn't beat me up. After only a few rides I really feel comfortable on the bike, I can ride technical sections with more confidence than even my Rockhound inspires (and that's a lot).

My only caveat about the bike is the build. I'm not sure if this was Trek's goof or the shop I bought it at. I lowered the stem after I bought the bike and found that some moron had greased the steerer tube. Good thing I noticed this before I rode. Then, I pulled off the crank and found that the square taper bottom bracket spindle had also been greased... doh.

As a mechanic, I expect a race level bike to be built and adjusted properly when new. I'd be a little embarassed to let a bike roll out of a shop with major (and dangerous) oversights in the build.

Okay, one more caveat... the Bontrager cranks are terrible. I rode and raced a 2001 Trek 8500 for 2 seasons with the Bontrager race lite crank and suffered the entire time it was on the bike. It's really not a good crank at all. I didn't even try to make the crank work this time around; I upgraded to the two piece XT as soon as I got the bike home. It's a truly awesome crank.

For $1500 it's an awesome bike. I wouldn't have paid $3000 three years ago for it, but if it's on close out it's certainly worth it.

Submitted by Kevin a Cross Country Rider from State College, PA USA
Date Reviewed: August 7, 2003
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $1950.00
Purchased At:LBS
Strengths:Fast and Fiesty! Fun to ride and climbs well. The faster the better for handling! Light
Weaknesses:The main triangle broke after only 7 weeks of riding. Trek replaced it and the LBS was quite cooperative (charging me nothing) Tonight the swing arm broke. I hope Trek is as good about the swing arm. In the first year I have had to:
1. Rebuild rear wheel with thicker spokes on nondrive side after many, many broken spokes.
2. Have headset replaced. (warrantied with a WTB which seems cheaper than the Cane Creek S6 that came with it.)
3. Have the Bantrager re5 pedals replaced. (They replaced the $105 pedals with Shimano 515's :(
4. XT Cassette replaced
5. Wheels trued frequently. (Design seems weak but light)
6. Both parts of frame replaced (or need replaced)
7. Rocker arm bolts replaced after one fell out during a ride.
Bike Setup:Mostly Stock Fuel 100
Bottom Line:Fun to ride but not real reliable.

Date Reviewed: August 14, 2002
Favorite Trail:all
Duration Product Used:6 months
Purchased At:WHEELWORKS
Strengths:LIGHT, RIGHT PRICE (LAST YEAR), GOOD OVERALL SPEC, HANDLES WELL, AWESOME FOR A X-C RACE OR 24-HR RACE (PROVEN).
Weaknesses:LOW BOTTOM BRACKET HEIGHT, CRAPPY BONTRAGER PEDALS, CRAPPY BONTRAGER TIRES (CAN WE SAY BLOW OUT?)
Similar Products Used:SPECIALIZED FSR, GARY FISHER SUGAR
Bike Setup:STOCK EXCEPT I SWAPPED OUT THE BONTRAGER RACE LITE FLAT BAR FOR A RACE FACE RISER BAR (MUCH BETTER).
Bottom Line:THIS BIKE ROCKS! I WAS WORRIED THAT I'D HAVE TO BABY IT, BUT IT HAULS ASS, THE LOCK OUT IS GREAT, AND OVERALL THE THING IS A GREAT DEAL AND WORTHWHILE ($1,000 LESS THAN THE 2002). THE ONE THING THAT SUCKS IS THAT THE BONTRAGER CRANK DOES CAUSE CHAIN SUCK (SEE OTHER REVIEWS), BUT IT'S ONLY HAPPENED TWICE. I WOULD MAKE THAT A PRIORITY TO SWAP OUT ONCE THE RINGS WEAR. THE PEDALS ARE ALSO A PRIORITY TO SWAP SINCE THE BONTRAGER PEDALS ARE LIKE MUD MAGNETS. BUY THIS BIKE NOW! OR WAIT UNTIL NEXT YEAR FOR THE 2002 ON SALE.

Submitted by Knull a Cross Country Rider from Germany
Date Reviewed: March 13, 2002
Duration Product Used:3 months
Strengths:Low weight and stiff frame, price not exorbitant, very innovative frame set (carbon, Zr alloy )
Weaknesses:To flimsy for heavy riders
Similar Products Used:Principia MacSL '99(hardtail), Bontrager
Bike Setup:Fuel 100 frame '02, XT, Tune & Syntace, Time pedals, Atom race fork, about 11 kg
Bottom Line:This is a cracking race bike, superlight and the full suspension makes it a very smooth ride. Although the
top tube seems very long, the geometry works well for me.

The only downside with these super light race bikes is that they feel a bit flimsy and i wouldn't use the Trek for everyday riding. My Principia hardtail is also a lightweight but feels more stable and less fussy to ride.

Fazit: For somebody who wants to race and is less than 85 kg (190 lbs) this bike is great, but for everyday riding
I'd buy sth more solid.

Favorite Trail:porcupin rim
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Strengths:I've already reviewed below but have changed the front fork to a Manitou Black Elite Air. It added extra weight, but ride is much smoother, not as clunky. Also, the problem with the rim rubbing in hard turns has been eliminated - this shock is much stiffer than the SID race. I love the long top tub and quick reactions of the bike. This is the best bike I've ever ridden. Unfortunately, I've recently lost my job and must sell. See the marketplace $2200
Weaknesses:Grips
Bike Setup:Stock with Manitou Black Elite Air
Bottom Line:Fast, precision ride at a light weight and great looks. Santa will be overwhelmed with requests this year. Be good boys and girls.

Price Paid: $3000.00
Strengths:Allrounder----great up and down hill. Real firm feel puts and keeps you in control, yet FS takes out the nasty stuff. This bike will change riding for you like you didn't think was possible. I'm not kidding.
Weaknesses:None I can find.
Similar Products Used:Sugar, Superlight, Cannondale, Ibis
Bike Setup:Pretty much stock, with a few minor upgrades here and there.
Bottom Line:I agree with the last reviewer. Trek has hit it good with this one. This bike is miles better than anything out there today at any price. Try to catch my butt, and you'll find out like the rest of the guys out on the trails here.

This is the sweetest purchase I ever made.

Strengths:Superior control, extremely fast ride (actually dangerously fast, since it masks the point where you may be going out of control-----it's that wicked)
Weaknesses:Yeah, right.
Similar Products Used:Almost all racing set ups out there
Bike Setup:Upgraded pedals, rear tire (no traction!), seat
Bottom Line:This is simply the best bike out there. Period. It's the perfect balance of control and speed.

Anyone who buys anything else is nuts.

Favorite Trail:porcupine rim
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Purchased At:Jeffersonvile Schwinn
Strengths:Fast, light, good looking, good components, great value, american made, good company
Weaknesses:Standover height is high, wheels rub in hard turns/rocks, SID Race is clunky
Similar Products Used:Cannondale SuperV2000, Scalpel 2000
Bike Setup:Stock but switching to Manitou Black Super Air
Bottom Line:I rode one of my favorite trails last weekend in KY and compared to my old SuperV, it was a dream ride. I'm a good technical rider, but have never raced and I like the longer top tube and lower center of gravity. The rear shock eliminated the pogo problems that I was used to and overall it handled like my old hardtail. I'm looking forward to hitting the tight technical trails here in Miami to see how it performs. I think this bike would work well for weekend warrior to racer who want a fast, stable, phat bike.

Favorite Trail:Soquel Demonstration
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $2500.00
Strengths:Light, fast, stable (most of the time) A whole lot of bang for the buck. Virtually no bobbing and takes the edge off.
Weaknesses:Somewhat unstable and flexy on fast rocky downhill. I CRACKED the frame on the seat tube where it meets the top tube. But Trek is sending out a new frame ASAP.
Bike Setup:STock...changed to a riser bar
Bottom Line:The craking thing is more common that Trek will admit. but Trek will replace it ASAP. And possibly pay for the labor to have it rebuilt especially if it was a recent purchase. If your an all around rider and want some serious cush on the downhill get a Santa Cruz. If you want speed and love to race then this bike rocks. Out of all the full suspension cross country bikes you get the most for your money from the fuel 100.

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Strengths:so light... so fast... so smooth
Weaknesses:2001 Fuel 100 cracked - see below post of 08-09-01; this reveiw cocnerns the 2002 Fuel 100 frame.
Similar Products Used:2000 Schwinn(Huffy) Rocket 88 Stage 1, 2001 Fuel 100, 2002 Fuel 100
Bike Setup:2002 frame (large), 2001 SID SL, 2002 Fox Float RC, re-built Rolf Propels, Thompson Elite seatpost, Easton CT2 bars, Shimano 858 pedals - otherwise stock = 24 lbs.
Bottom Line:The 2002 frame is 15% lighter than the 2001, with a carbon rocker plate and carbon seatstays in addition to the carbon chainstays. Trek got the 2002 frame to me in less than 3 weeks. The bummer - they wouldn't pay to rebuild it from the 2001 frameset teardown - so it cost me about $100.00 to get a new black 2002 - only one I have seen.

Date Reviewed: September 13, 2001
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $4000.00
Purchased At:Guy's Bicycles --->The Bike Shop for the Philadelphia Area
Strengths:Weight, tunability, feels like a dream doing fast trail riding, looks really good with the new 2002 paint job, the best I've ever tried, and I've tried them all (XC FS).
Weaknesses:none so far except that raceface cranks touch on the left side unless you get a raceface BB which allows you to adjust the spindle more to the left. That is my only problem, but it's not really a problem.
Similar Products Used:FSR XC, Jeckell, I-Drive, Sugar, XTC, Cann. F2000
Bike Setup:2002 Fuel 100 Frameset, Marzocchi X-fly 80 Fork, Raceface Cranks and BB, XT derailieurs and brakes, Phil Wood hubs w/ Mavic 517 front, 618 rear, Thomson seatpost, Fs 2000 seat, Profile "Stiffy" Stem, CT2 bars, Time A.T.A.C. pedals, ATI grips
Bottom Line:This bike is the best I've ever had, I'm only 19 so I haven't had many bikes yet, but I put all my money into this one and I'm sure I'll make a lot of people jealous, even though that's not the intent. I just want to have the most fun I possibly can on a mtn. bike and this bike is it. The bike is great and what's even better is it makes me want to get off my butt and ride it, never had a bike like that before.

Purchased At:"Raske Sykler", Oslo
Strengths:Light weight and excellent stability
Weaknesses:Not any so far
Similar Products Used:First FS
Bike Setup:Original M-size, except of replaced stem with another angle
Bottom Line:I spent a lot of time searching (and testing) for a fully suspension bike. From the very first test trip, I felt this bike fitted me perfect. And now, the more I ride it, the more I like it! The stability at high speed on rough terrain is outstanding. And very important: I feel safe on this bike (it does not give me unexpected behaviour like my older bike did). So far, both the front and rear schocks works great, but I spent some time fine tuning. I use the climb control on the front shock a lot, but never the lockout on the rear (even that was one of my requirements).
A great bike ! (but expensive in Norway ...)

Favorite Trail:Long Ridge OSP
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $2200.00
Purchased At:LBS
Strengths:Climbing and single track handling are excellent. Good high speed stability as well.
Weaknesses:Stock tires are weak as are stock brake pads. Chain ring shifting was a bit troublesome at first but proper adjustment fixed that. Bars are too wide and it has a few too many stickers for my taste!
Similar Products Used:GT LTS Team
Bike Setup:Mostly stock, changed tires for something more meaty and added bar-ends, switched pedals for my old Shimano 747s
Bottom Line:I LOVE this bike - it is a blast too ride. It climbs well, is super light, and loves to go fast in single track. Weaving in and out of trees on a tight trail on the Fuel is amazing fun! I've read complaints about the cranks from other reviewers but I can't notice anything different from the XTR cranks on by last bike. I'm a quick descender and love to bomb down the hill. I was a bit worried about the wheels at my 195lb weight, but no issues after a dozen or so rides so far. I spent half as much on this bike as my GT LTS Team in 1995, and it is easily twice the bike - COOL!

This bike is perfect for the serious rider or racer who likes to both climb easily and descend quickly!

Strengths:Super stable rear end, great geometry, lightweight, warranty is 2nd to none.
Weaknesses:Potential for weld seperation, WILL NOT WORK WITH ANY STYLE RACE FACE CRANKSETS, Could not get it set up right with 8 speed parts.
Similar Products Used:Trek Y50, Specialized FSR, GT LTS-1000, Santa Cruz Superlight, Kona Moko Moko & King Kikapu
Bike Setup:Trek Fuel 100, Marzocchi X-Fly 100, Thompson Stem & Post, Easton CT2 Riser Bar, Mavic Crossmax UST Disc, Shimano Hydro Disc Brakes, Truvativ ISIS Drive Crankset, And More!
Bottom Line:I got (frame only) this as a warranty replacement (upgrade) for a cracked Y bike. I also cracked it within 3 months. Same place as the guy below, guess that makes me the second (yea right). It also split on the front side of the weld between the top tube and seat tube and then the alum. itself all the way around. Turners have the same problem and now there is a gusset welded at the joint on the new ones. Trek was pretty good about getting me a replacement within 2 weeks. As for the performance of this rig, it is unmatched (just in case you don't know, Roland Green is placing top 3 and 2 1st's in World Cup races this season on a production frame). I have had less than 1/2 the amount of neck and back pain since I started riding this and I'm going faster and longer to boot. This is the best all around bike that I have riden.

Weaknesses:Rolf Propels, frame welds, bad decals
Similar Products Used:Schwinn Rocket 88 Stage 1 (Huffy)
Bike Setup:Added Thompson Elite seatpost, CT2 carbon bar, Shimano 858s... re-laced rear Rolf Propel with heavier spokes
Bottom Line:THE FRAME JUST CRACKED!!! It was not from an impact, but a repetitive streess type failure on the back of the seatpost tube, just above the top pivot bolt, along the edge of the weld (weld was probably too hot). Trek says it's a first. I guess Trek must hate me. Propels that wouldn't stay in one piece, and now, they have to send me a new frame (I hope it's a 2002, which is supposedly lighter - and with an all carbon rear triangle). Bummer is there's a race Sunday in Kerrville, and now I have to ride my hardtail. And it's a very rough and rocky course.

3 chilis because of the frame and wheels

Bike Setup:Easton Monkeylite carbon high rise bars. Thomson Eliete stem. Avid Arch Rival brakes. Real Turbine L P isis crank. Michelin Comp s front and Hot S rear. The balance stock.
Bottom Line:Full suspension, MMMMMMMMMMMMMM BABY!Why did I wait so long!? The answer is that I was waiting for a light, fully independent (non-URT) that didn't rival a Mac truck in weight. Personally I was waiting for something that wasn't a compromise, ie. could climb but not descend...could descend but not climb...could climb but got squirreley at speed.
I set the bike up as per mfgr. suggestion and got a hardtail like ride, but after a few months of writing down the values and approaching it as a system, I have a VERY NICE dialed in full suspension bike.
I weigh 180# and stand 5'9" so I'm about average. My suspension is set up soft 80# on the rear and 80# on the Sid SL. I get full range and the bike is not harsh. Riding hard is important to me. Steep, rocky descents and climbs that seem like walls are standard out here, ( San Mateo and Marin)and this bike delivers.
Climbing is important and this thing is a goat on a climb. Sure I can lock out the rear if I want, but I only do so rarely. There's little need.
I guess my point is simple. Awesome bike.

Bottom Line:This bike is fast. It rips up cross country courses. The Fuel 100 is great for all xc trails except the very technical, although it does better on these trails than a hardtail. I can climb a lot faster and better on my Fuel than any of my hardtails. The components package isn't great, but hey, that's why it doesn't get the highest value rating.
If most of your rides are really technical (drop offs, big rocks, urban assault) this is not the bike for you. If you want an FS XC machine that just begs to be ridden fast, buy a fuel.

Weaknesses:brakes(pads only), tires
Similar Products Used:Sugar 1, Santa Cruz Superlight
Bike Setup:Basically stock- changed out seatpost to Thomson elite, changed tires to Michelin comp 5 tubeless. Will slowly remove some of the Bontrager stuff to make it lighter
Bottom Line:Really sound overall set-up. This is my first true race bike and I can really tell a difference. The bike hooks up and climbs great even in the loose, wet stuff. Downhills are fast and tight. I weigh over 200lbs and the bike has held up well. I am far from an agile rider(bulldozer) and was concerned about the abuse the bike would take- after about 100 miles no problems.

My only gripes are the green avid brake pads that are stock suck- I changed them out to XTR's after my first ride. Also, they advertise the bike as a tubeless wheel-set. When I got home I found a note stuck in with all my receipts and warrenties that the rims are set-up for tubeless but the tires are not. you have to buy new tires to run tubeless??? How difficult would it have been to install tubeless tires with the Propel rim-set and be done with it.

Overall it is a great bike. The brake-pad thing was minor and I probably would have changed from the stock tires anyway. The bike is fun to ride and race. Now an 18 mile ride doesn't feel like 60 miles like it did with my old 29lb monster.

Bottom Line:Nice idea for a bike but the support guys at Trek are A##HOLES! The carbon in the rear triangle cracked the first time I rode the bike! It took three months (and 20 phone calls) for my LBS to get a new frame. I finally got another one and it cracked in a XC race three month later. Trek would not warranty the frame because the bike had been raced. They are marketing the Trek 100 as a race bike, but they will not warranty it if you race it - what kind of shizet is that??? Luckily the owner of the LBS where I bought this piece of crap was racing with me when it happen and he is really cool so he gave me my money back as a credit to any of his 10 stores.

I took the credit and used it buy a Giant NRS Air. This bike rocks. It is a much better bike - it handles better at speeds and the suspension design does not BOB at all. Better desecnded and better climber - what more could you ask for.

Bottom Line:I waited a long time and saved a lot of beer money to build this bike up. Fortunately our team's AWESOME sponsor help put the icing on the cake. Thanks to East Coasters, Cane Creek, Thomson, WTB, Answer and RACE FACE!!

The bike is light, fast, and climbs as well as it descends. It was awesome at 24HRS of Snowshoe and allowed me to BOMB the very technical and slick downhills with authority and survive some good climbs. The bike was light enough that the muddy-rooty-slimey hike-a-bike sections weren't as bad as they could have been. It really made me a believer and we finished 13th out of 102 in 5 Person Open - by the way. It was a real adventure!

ONLY complaint - I have is a NOISEY rear disc. I have switched pads, and rotors from another bike and tried various other tricks with minimal improvement. I can live with this but am going to try different pads and sanding the rotors. I think it has something to do with the convoluted adaptors that Trek came up with for the disc mount.

I like this bike more everytime I ride it. I was on a Bontrager Race Lite before and was totally dialed in, so there is yet a lot for me to learn about FS handling.

Fuel is definitely an improvement for 20+ mile rides!

Temporarily on Sun Rhyno-lites while Trek warranty re-builds the Rolf Propels with heavier spokes - I keep breaking rear spokes on drive and non-drive sides. The LBS says it's from excessive torque while climbing and accelerating. I don't care what it's from - it's a bummer. I withhold one chili for the wheel problem, but Trek seems to be trying to do the right thing (by and thru my LBS and Rolf Dietrich himself).

Favorite Trail:Annadel State Park
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $2600.00
Purchased At:Bike Peddler, Santa Rosa
Strengths:Extremely lightweight (24.5 lbs); precise control; no bobbing on the climbs;
Weaknesses:Stock Bont. pedals sucked, stock seat was like sitting on a cement block; stock rear tire not aggressive enough for Northern California dirt (went to Blades)
Similar Products Used:Gary Fisher Sugar; Santa Cruz Superlight; Cannondales
Bike Setup:Upgraded seat and pedals
Bottom Line:I used to be one of those stubborn hardtail fans, until I got on this beast and became a FS believer. I even made sure I got the rear susp. lockout option, because I was determined I'd want to shut it off during my climbs. On the contrary, I've found this bike exhibits absolutely zero bobbing, but I'm also able to keep a more consistent pedaling rhythm on the uphills because it's disrupted less by rocks----and there are lots where I ride. All this at 0.5 lbs less than my now-retired hardtail Cannondale Delta-V 1000. I rip past guys on all sorts of bikes on the climbs now, fully recognizing the unique advantage of FS on the uphills when they're pretty rough. I've never used the fox RC lockout, because when I tried it on a climb I felt it, thought "why did I wait so long to buy a high-end FS bike like this," and turned it back off.

The downhills are like a dream. Even on extremely rocky sections, I just point down the middle of the trail and go-----no need to try and find that elusive path of smoothness hidden in the maze of boulders. Up to about 6-high rocks are ploughed over: Higher than that, I still go around or hop. And no more of the "shaken kidney" pain that 25 miles-an-hour for 4 miles used to give me on those same downhills on my hardtail. With the rear wheel in almost constant contact with the ground, the control is still there through the roughest of it. However, I simply couldn't stop with the stock rear tire, it was like ice skating.

So here's the ego bit with this bike. I set out shopping determined to buy one of the less commercialized seemingly higher-end brands. This means I didn't want a Trek. I tried to make the Santa Cruz Superlight work for me, but although my wife bought it just didn't feel like I was "at one" with the bike during the trials. It felt sorta squishy. Same with the Sugar. A friend of my wife's wanted a lower end bike, so I took her to the Trek store. During the visit, I jumped on the Trek 100 just to prove to myself that I didn't want to buy one. You know what that led to. This is a very responsive bike, and you feel it when you first get on it. I'm an extremely aggressive rider, and I need the ultimate in control at high speeds on very rough terrain to ensure I don't lose my life. This is it. It's like a hardtail in the level of control you get.
Also, don't be mistaken---I've found numerous admirers of this bike at the regular gathering points out on the trails----many of those guys I passed on their hardtails on the way up the mountain.

The SID SL and RC Fox are a great combination. I do highly recommend you remove both the inserts on the XT brakes to create the cam effect that permits softer brake action----especially if you're aggressive on the downhills. Note that all brakes offer some sort of adjustment like this (sometimes with a screw, not a removable insert), and the factory setting will give you carpal tunnel and make your hands the limiting factor to a wild ride back down to earth. Bike stores should point this out, since it makes the whole experience better.

All around a five plus.

Strengths:Light and efficient
Weaknesses:Bontrager parts (enough already!)
Similar Products Used:Fisher Joshua
(It’s kinda sick how much I love the Fuel. But then having owned a Joshua I might love any of the new designs)
Bike Setup:Stock so far except for TI frog pedals.
Bottom Line:This bike is easy to push around and finesse through Minnesota singletrack. I am a 5'5 woman riding a small (approx. 24 lbs) so I might not recommend it for big riders who like huge drops and lotsa thrashing around but Roland Green has definitely proved this to be race-worthy.

Climbing is great because I feel the effects of my pedal force INSTANTLY. Sid SL is fantastic over stutter bumps. I'm not sure about the FOX rear--doesn't always match the front. I might switch to my STRATA XC pro at some point. BB is low so be prepared to clip a few logs in the expert sections but this pays off by making you feel your "in" the bike rather than up on top. I was also actually surprised at how comfortable the saddle is (although it probably weighs too much for racers).

While the Bontrager cockpit is "fine" the crankset is a little non-committal compared to shimano--marginally better than my old LX set up.

Brakes are excellent stoppers with the ceramic rims--and quiet. Bontrager Super X Tires are a little too sketchy. Will probably go with the IRC Serac tubeless when they come out.

This bike is good for HT racers looking to go FS or for FS riders who are tired of bobbing up and down.

Value is 5 cause I got a great deal and I love the bike.
Overall is 4 cause the crankset could be better for a top of the line Trek racer.

Purchased At:Trek
Strengths:This Bike will really smooth out your ride. It is light, fast and efficient. Very light at 25.08 lbs (large). I have done several races on this bike and enjoyed an advantage over my competitors by being able to sit on most sections. The climbing is amazingly efficient as the rear wheel tracks the gound very accurately. Wheels are very light, and accelerate quickly.
Weaknesses:Lockout switches are hard to reach in a pinch. Stock bars are too wide. Bontrager pedals (just awful). I found the bontrager rings to not be very precise, but this is only on my particular bike. Avid brake pads wear too fast.
Similar Products Used:TRek 8500r, Trek 9.8, GT avalanche
Bike Setup:Stock with Schwalbe tires, TIME pedals, TI cage, harder compound brake pads.
Bottom Line:This bike is amazing. I can't believe how much faster and smoother I can ride technical sections. My climbing is improved over the bumpy loose terrain, and when locked out it sprints more effieciently than a similarily setup hardtail. I love this bike.

Bike Setup:stock ecept for Easton Carbon bars and 858 pedals
Bottom Line:This bike climes better than my Trek 8500 did. It is very light under 24 lbs. downhills exelent. the only reason the pait peels kind of easy is because paint weighs alot so the just put a thin layer on. and the rear shock won't go click if you don't put judy butter or something like that on it. It is the by far best bike I have ever owned or been on evan the frame only bikes

Purchased At:United
Strengths:Frame and climbing ability.
Weaknesses:Hydraulic brake hose routing. Paint/decals
Similar Products Used:Devinci Moon Racer, Yeti FS, Bianchi Custom.
Bike Setup:All 2001 XTR. 2001 Sid, Fox rear and Hayse Hydraulic disc brakes with Rolf Dolomite Wheels & hubs in place of the stock propel's that only adapt to V brakes.
Bottom Line:I replaced most of the Bontrager with XTR and upgraded on the SID. I'm happy with the quality of ride over long periods in the saddle. The bike is very light at 25lbs which is a big plus on the climbs, The rear suspension works so well you don't notice it at all. The is no rear bobbing under load. I'm very impressed with the duability of the wheels. I hammer on these and haven't trued them yet.

The crappy little bosses you get to hook the hydraulic hoses on suck. They hose still flops around too much so I had to zip tie them down. I'd like to see a adaptor for holding hydraulic lines in place. The paint and decals are of poor quality. The paint scratches very easy and the decals on the top tube peel on their own.

Buy this bike if you race, love to climb or love epic rides. Don't buy it if you plan on hucking or free riding with it.

Overall the bike is race ready and able to take on anything you throw at it. My complaints are petty and do not affect the quality of ride, and thats what it's all about.

Rob

Fire Road: Very Good (Needs bar mounted lock out)
Reliability: Excellent
Weight: Excellent (Under 24 Lbs.)
Comfort: Excellent
Price: Very Good
Weaknesses:Stock shock has too much flex for heavier riders. Rear lockout works well but should be bar mounted.
Similar Products Used:None: Previous bike was a Bontrager Race Lite (hardtail).
Bike Setup:Made significant changes to this bike including: Full XTR; Marzocchi Bomber; Thompson Seatpost and Stem; Mavic UST Tubeless Rims.
Bottom Line:I weigh 200 lbs. and ride varied terrain with eye blurring rocky downhills, smooth single track, and heart pounding climbs. This bike does not miss a beat in any conditions. It climbs like a mountain goat (no bobbing) and descends like an eagle (precise and fast). Credit must also be given to the tubeless rims. For all you hard core hardtail riders this bike will enhance your ride times and overall comfort.
