$400.00 | | Purchased At: | JOWAN | | Strengths: | -Super Solid Frame (once made a accidental jump from 8 ft and it suvived) -Easy steering -Has evrything you need (but in a cheap way...) -Good front-suspension (even if its not adjustable) -Still no rust on the frame, even after 6 years | | Weaknesses: | -All components are almost the cheapest there are, so don't expect high-level results -Very poor rims furnished -Fron derailleur seems to block once in a while -Heavy! | | Bike Setup: | -Pedals changed to SPD -Crancks changed to Deore LX -Cow-bars added -Rigida Rims -XT-derailleur on the back (must!!) -LX-derailleur on the front (Must !!!!!!) | | Bottom Line: | When I purchased this bike 6 years ago I bought it because of the low price for a "Trek". With a little investment over the years, I still have a solid bike, good and reliable parts, strong enough to survive a big jump, or strong enoug to do a rough downhill. Okay, there are nicer bikes on the market, but even if you willing to pay for it, it will never be as solid as a steel frame-bike. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$350.00 | | Purchased At: | Westen Cycle | | Strengths: | It's a really tough bike, It stands up to everything I dish out, decent components for the money!! | | Weaknesses: | It's a little heavy, but you get what you pay for. The grips are a little big. | | Similar Products Used: | Kona Fire Mountain | | Bike Setup: | I'm rollin' stock. | | Bottom Line: | It's a sweet ass bike for the money! I have bruised and abused this bike so badly, and it still rides amazing! The gears sometimes make a funny noise, but hey I have ridden this baby HARD! I just put a little chain lube on it and it shifts and sounds fine. Buy this bike if you are looking for a good bike to piss around the trails on, or if you are starting to take a serious intrest in mounatin biking! I'm looking to upgrade to a Norco Manik, or a Kona Stuff in the upcoming year, i'm getting a little more serious about the sport. This bike gets 5/5 for sure. $230.00 | | Purchased At: | Agee's | | Strengths: | A TOUGH bike! Great for the money. Very reliable, Shifts great every time. | | Weaknesses: | HEAVY, HEAVY, HEAVY. It's a steal bike. You get what you pay for. If you want strong and light, it's not cheap; if you want cheap and strong, it's not going to be light. | | Bike Setup: | Stock | | Bottom Line: | I have pretty muched tested this bike to the limits. I rode this bike at least 5 times a week on single track. The front suspension leaves something to be desired, but, you get what you pay for. Other than that, the bike has been great. Havn't had trouble with the anything other than a slipping seatpost. Great, strong bike! If not money, you pay for the toughness in weight. However, a heavier bike=stronger legs. Great bike to test your love of MTB. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$250.00 | | Purchased At: | REM cycle | | Strengths: | decent components, excellent value, great handling, steel frame(i'm kind of a traditionalist...i like steel)that is light enough and bomb proof. | | Weaknesses: | stock pedals suck: slippery when wet...fork acts up in cold weather, brakes suck...pads worn very quickly, and need adjusting often | | Similar Products Used: | schwinn sidewinder | | Bike Setup: | stock with steel pedals with clips and straps, profile design bar ends, trek comfort saddle | | Bottom Line: | I just rode the CAMBA New Years Day urban assualt with this bike, and i was extremely proud to be on it..i rode off of 3 foot drops and stairs, and kept up with and passed some of the group that was riding lightweight bikes...the chain never slipped, the rims stayed true, the fork soaked up the hits(it was warmer than freezing that day). I was very happy with how the bike performed, given that it was an entry level bike...obviously it will not withstand huge drops, but it will handle the trails very well, and take a lot of abuse...while keeping some cash in your wallet to upgrade the various parts that need it. I would like to thank Trek for a great bike, and for making me a MTB lover. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$219.00 | | Purchased At: | Scheels | | Strengths: | Inexpensive (for a decent bike), strong frame, smooth mechanism, nice ride. | | Weaknesses: | Seat post slowly lowers itself while riding no matter how tight the nut on the quick release collar. | | Bike Setup: | Stock except added cushioned bar ends, new Bell seat. | | Bottom Line: | Learn from my experience, folks, you get what you pay for. Skip the trash they sell in department stores and buy a GOOD bike. My old full suspension MTB from Shopko literally fell apart after 2 seasons. My 2003 Trek 820 is absolutely ideal for the level trail rider. It's strong, (I'm 6'5", 230lbs), although I wouldn't think it wise to subject it regularly to 4 foot drops. I primarily use it for fairly level crushed gravel trails to the tune of 700+ miles per summer. The bike is quiet, shifts smoothly, and brakes well. Take my advice, and spend just a little more to get a vastly superior product. Don't learn the hard way like me... | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$320.00 | | Purchased At: | Silver City | | Strengths: | Cheap, good like "entry level" bike for the money. I like the shifters. It's also good for a 2nd bike, or a junker for parts after you upgrade. | | Weaknesses: | Kind of heavy. Brakes suck. Kind of slow. Chain falls off constantly after anything over a 1 ft drop(even after several attempts at a remedy for this). Problems with the shifters (although they are very good, after a small adjustment they were fine). The pedals' grip is super-bad, I had to replace them after a month, the plastic also wears down quickly. The stock grips are bad, and the seats semi-uncomfortable after a while. I've also heard that the RST 191 bottoms out a lot, but I don't weigh much so I can't relate. | | Similar Products Used: | Specialized RockHopper(old) | | Bike Setup: | Pretty much stock, except for a change of grips(salsa), a new seat, and the pedals ('borrowed' from my junker specialized) | | Bottom Line: | When i'm riding I think "man this bike is a peice," then I think about the price, and then it's not so bad. As I was writing the "weaknesses" i kept thinking of things that I would liek better on this bike, and I realized that it's a $300 bike, and a pretty damn good one at that. I got really into biking this past year, I'm thinking of upgrading to a Sugar 4. Over all the 820, good entry-level/beginner/rec bike. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$200.00 | | Purchased At: | Bayview Cycle, $369 CAN | | Strengths: | It's a Trek! Solid Frame, looks fantastic, great paint. Excellent price. Easy to toss around, just 1 1/2 pounds heavier than the 4100's aluminium framebut definitely stronger, similar components, same Shimano Altus rear derailleur. | | Weaknesses: | Front RST CL shocks, are not adjustable. Pedals do not grip well. I little, slow, I can outpedal it in it's highest gear just going around the block, a 24 speed seems more appropriate. | | Similar Products Used: | None. This is my first MTB, my last bike was a road bike, A Nishiki Tri A Olympique. Great bike, but that was atleast a decade and 50+ pounds ago. | | Bike Setup: | Stock. I just got it. I may look into an adjustable fork down the road. | | Bottom Line: | Well, I am from the Toronto GTA area, and for the money, you get a very strong bike from a world class manufacturer like Trek, decent Shimano components for the price, looks great, and for an ex football player, 6 ft 1", 250+ pounds, and now entering his 30's, sorry guys but I won't be doing 4 foot drops, and rock hopping ain't my thing, so for me getting some exercise during the week, and doing a trail or two on the weekends is good enough for me, so I'd definitely recommend this bike to anyone who's looking for something solid that can hold it's own. For big guys like myself maybe look at a 4300 that has adjustable front suspension, but I am extremely happy with the 820. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

The bike can handle light xc but anyone who rides it may complain thats its a bit too heavy. The parts are pretty standard with the nasty Altus gear which leaves it 7 speed with few upgrade possibilities due to no disk mount. Very strong, durable frame...I have read another review with scepticism regarding its ability on harder trails, but I can say that I've raced this bike up at state level (a question of budget, rather than ability), and the frame/fork haven't failed me on the XC circuit yet...the derailleurs are the only things that have given me real strife...a great bike for the entry level rider, and a good way to begin the Trek range. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |
