$700.00 | | Purchased At: | American Cycle and Fitness | | Strengths: | Climbs like a goat Great handling Stock tires work well Rock Shock Pilot is very adjustable | | Weaknesses: | Hearing a creaking noise somewhere near the stem on the rough stuff
| | Bike Setup: | Stock, and I chose to skip the disc brakes | | Bottom Line: | This is a great bike. I ride a stock 19.5, which replaced a 10 year old Trek Single Track that had no front shock. I considered getting a full suspension bike but could not justify the price. I also skipped the disc brakes since I don't ride in the muck. Got a great end of year deal on this bike and I have been very happy with it. It's fast and handles great. The shock is very adjustable and the bike climbs really well. I recommend this bike for beginners or veterans that have a budget. It's a very competitive bike for the price. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Easy to accidentaly shift gears on rough terrain as the shifters were originally set too close to the grips. Some fasteners showed signs of rust after first wet outing, Same as my Trek road bike. | | Similar Products Used: | None, my first real Mountain Bike. Use a TREK 1000 on the road though. | | Bike Setup: | Out of the box 2006 version with Hayes disks | | Bottom Line: | This is my first real mountain bike and I bought it specifically to enter and compete in local adventure races. These are run on a mixture of country road, loose gravel trail and straight off road bush. Did a few miles on road then moved to the loose stuff and hills. The bike performs flawlessly. My first race was last Saturday and I came 2nd. 20 miles of the 4 hour race was on the TREK, it never missed a beat, steep climbs, fast rough descents, difficult technical sections all taken in its stride.
Confidence building with the bike on a daily basis, but love it. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$1050.00 | | Purchased At: | last stop sports, tortola | | Strengths: | Excellent frame, nice component spec, disc brakes feel nice, tires grip very well on the broken hardpack, bike is very light weight, climbs extremely well, forks feel ok too, seem quite adjustable, good frame geometry as well, nice reach to the handlebars, paintwork good and looks nice. | | Weaknesses: | Hate the standard handlebar grips, like clutching a turd, seat is a bit hard, will get used to that one though, discs were rubbing on pads, easily adjusted with a 0.2mm feeler gauge on the affected side, found that the lever travel isnt always the same on downhills, caught me out that one, would have been nice to have some named hubs in there and obviously stainless steel eyelets on the wheels too, also the bontrager components have the nastiest mild steel bolts which rust up after 2 seconds outside, will be changing those for stainless soon. Have never liked presta valves and looks like the rims wont fit schrader valves in there?? | | Similar Products Used: | trek 4300 with discs | | Bike Setup: | have paid attention to disc brake set up, forks at 20 psi for 190 lb rider, rest standard. | | Bottom Line: | Great bike, very impressed, seems made for the sort of xc riding i do with quite a bit of uphill and downhill road, hoping everything holds up as parts are hard to find in the caribbean, would have scored 5 chili's if it werent for tiny complaints about rusty bolts/presta valves. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$950.00 | | Strengths: | Looks quite cool, handles well in most situations, Hayes disc brakes have been great. No major problems or break downs | | Weaknesses: | The RockShox Pilot SL is not the best thing around and has an unnerving "squish" sound to it, stock seat is uncomfortable, front deraileur has been hard to fine tune and the chain kept falling off inner ring, tires wore out fast | | Bike Setup: | Mainly stock except for Selle San Marco seat, Thudbuster, Panaracer tires, Wipperman teflon chain, Hayes HFX-9 discs (included at purchase) | | Bottom Line: | I have actually really liked riding this bike. It was my first "real" mountian bike, and it is still serving me well. It seems to be a great entry level ride for people who plan on riding a lot and getting better. I plan to upgrade to SRAM rd and shifters, and probably a new crank in the next few months as things start to wear. So far, a great value. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$1050.00 | | Purchased At: | The Hub of Aspen | | Bike Setup: | Stock with Polar computer and Nokian Extreme studded tires. Will be on Snowcats soon. | | Bottom Line: | I got the '05 w/ hydraulic discs (thus the price), and am glad I did. They don't ice up like others tend to... Bike is light, fast, and feels to be freaking solid. Fork lock-out is nice for the climb. Handles well on ice and snow, as well as anything, I suppose. Paint scheme is actually nice - I guess Trek got the hint that their flashy paint and decal schemes have really sucked throughout the years. I might not even get this one repainted! I can't think of anything that I dislike about her yet. Felt a bit spendy, but for the component group you couldn't build a better value. Nicer saddle would be appreciated - but everybody has their own opinion of what a nice saddle is. A fella can expect to swap that - no big deal. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

So for where I used to ride, mostly uphill pavement, this bike was awsome. But once I went to some real trails in the mountains where the terrain is much different, my bike couldnt keep up. So dont get this bike if you do some serious XC/freeriding. | | Bike Setup: | STock except I changed the tires to some Michelin Hot S 2.2's. | | Bottom Line: | This bike is an awsome bike for light cross country riding. The maverick wheelset isnice as well. The bike climbs extremely well, the front wheel stays glued to the ground =, yet is easy to pop the wheel up over obstacles. I wanted to get back into it affordably so the 6700 seemed like a great solution. And it was. I have no regrets about buuying a more affordable bike with a great frame. I know I can upgrade as needed and always have a great frame to build upon. Not that the coponents aren't up to par. I was actually very surprised at how well the bike operates, with the exception of the brakes, but thats no problem with the avids.Buy it you are low on bucks and desire a good bike, dont if your expecting top dollar specs. Saddle ok. | | Similar Products Used: | Tunturi Kayapo Trail, Merida Matts Race | | Bike Setup: | Stock + Hayes hydraulic disc brakes | | Bottom Line: | Very responsive, fast bike. So fast the rider has to shape up. Light but can still handle rough bits and downhill in a decent manner. The Pilot SL is not the plushest of forks, but it´s very XC. The bike is fun to ride everywhere, even on paved roads. The Finnish winter is too rough for cyclocross, but the 6700 will (I hope) inspire me to ride through the winter. from San Diego, CA Date Reviewed: August 30, 2003 | | Duration Product Used: | 1 Year | | Purchased At: | $650 | | Strengths: | Excellent Frame/front shock, so far! Brakes hold up on steep downhills nicely. | | Weaknesses: | Seatpost, ofcourse. Mine used to slip until it BENT, if you can believe that! Sloppy shifting on the crank side. Rear wheel. Seat. Fairly heavy in the middle. Tires. | | Bottom Line: | OK, from all the weaknesses listed above it would seem that this bike pretty much sucks. But I am actually happy with it. I bought the thing with the idea that I would sooner or later update most of the components, but I didn't realize just how much sooner I would be forking out more of my cold hard cash for better parts!
Lets start with the front end. The shock is absolutely perfect for me. Not alot of worry about setup and all that nonsense. I have it set a little bit softer than the recommendation for my weight, but not too much. The "rabbit/turtle" adjustment is nice too. I really like a quick return when going downhill, and a little slower on the flats, so its nice to know I have this option.
The seatpost sucks. Mine bent (and I'm not that fat, am I?). I actually weigh in at 210lbs, and I ride pretty hard. So I replaced it with a thompson, and have yet to see how it holds up. The crankset is pretty cheap, so I replaced it with an XT setup. I think the bike shed about 3-5 lbs remarkably. I also had to replace the seat already, but I do spend alot of time glud to it, so I really cant complain there.
The rear wheel fell apart on me, and that wasnt a happy experience, let me tell you. The thing bent about 3 months after I bought it, they "fixed" it, but not long after spokes started breaking. I tried a repair, but just kept loosing spokes, so I broke down and upgraded.
I am extremely happy now with all the upgrades to this bike. The frame is awesome, and I have a tendancy to beat it to death. If I could go back and do it again I would get this frame with better components from the beginning.

from Ottawa, Ontario Canada. Date Reviewed: August 11, 2003 | | Duration Product Used: | 3 months | | Purchased At: | Award Cycles, Ottawa. | | Strengths: | Frame is strong and light. Geometry is excellent. Takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'! | | Weaknesses: | Brakes, Seat Post. | | Similar Products Used: | Oryx T-Line 250, and a few others. | | Bike Setup: | Stock except for switching pedals, and seat for a Speed V. | | Bottom Line: | Ok, this is the 1000 kilometre update from my post at the end of June. I've ridden the bike hard, putting on 20-30km pretty well every day, with a few longer rides of 40km plus.
The bike has held up great. Shock is still working great, and I have started to dial it in better. Initially, I was using the recommended Air Pressure settings for my weight, but I have backed off that a bit, and run less Air Pressure now. This gives the shock a more supple feel I find....without it bottoming out.
The seat post slip is gone, thanks to many wipes of the seat post to remove grease. All components still feel tight, with no problems yet. It still shifts nice and smooth, with no problems in that area.
I have ridden in a lot of rain this year. It has been a wet summer. Because of that, I have spent less time on XC trails, and more time on the many many kilometres of paved bike trail in the city I live in. The stock tires, have been fine for that....but, picked up some glass I guess on the weekend, and rear tire went flat. Fixed it up, but it left a rather large hole in the tire. So, I am trying a Panaracer FireXC Pro on the rear. It's a bit noisy on pavement, but...It should be an improvement on XC trails over the stock tire.
My biggest complaint with the bike is the rear brake. It drags, and despite plenty of dicking around with it...it still drags slightly. So, I will probably swap the brakes out for something else.
But, on the plus side....everything else has been great. It's a very comfortable bike to ride and so far, has lived up to it's reputation for being solidly built. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$675.00 | | Purchased At: | Award Cycles Ottawa | | Strengths: | All the ride charactoristics are excellent. Shifts smoothly, Shock works well. Frame geometry seems to work well for me. I'm 6 ft, and also a big guy at 220lbs. The frame and bike were recommended for me by the retailer. It was nice to see others who are bigger guys using the bike, and liking it. So...it seems to be a good choice for big guys. I'm riding a 19.5 frame. Larger than my last frame, but I wanted more ride comfort with this bike purchase. This bike manouvers well, and handles nicely on a variety of dry and dirt conditions. Climbs nicely. | | Weaknesses: | So far..I have the slipping seatpost as well. Not to worried as others have described the fix. There are a few small quirks, that should get sorted out when I bring it in for it's post-sale tune up. I did swap out the seat because I found the stock one uncomfortable. Also switched pedals to toe-clip style which I prefer. But, I would not call that a weakness. I just prefer that style of pedal being a bit old-school. | | Similar Products Used: | Previous bike was a BRC Columbus hardtail. Tange Infinity Steel 16.5" frame with no front shock. Rode it for 15 years. In shopping around I rode Oryx, Marin, Kona and others. There were lots of great bikes to choose from, but this Trek suited my size and riding style. | | Bike Setup: | Stock except for seat and pedal switch. Award Cycles did a complete teardown of the bike, and then reassemble/tune prior to letting me take it. That was pretty cool, considering It was assembled in the shop already when I bought it. So...it left the store (next day) when I picked it up, in perfect setup. | | Bottom Line: | So far, so good. I'm paying attention to a few things to see if I might make changes down the road. Maybe tires...but, I'll give the stock tires some more riding before I decide whether to switch. But, all in all...I'm very happy. Purchasing a new bike is fun...but, it can be a headache as well. So many choices, it makes you spin sometimes. So....if you want to cut to the chase when shopping, and you are a big guy...maybe consider this bike. AS well, make sure that you purchase an airpump for the front shock, so that you can have it properly setup for your riding conditions. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$799.00 | | Purchased At: | Brick Wheels | | Strengths: | Air adjustable front forks and the solid frame. Gear changes are smooth under a heavy load. | | Weaknesses: | Handle bars are to wide for th trails I use and had to cut them down a bit. The seat stem does collapse while riding I haven't taken the extra lube off yet. I believe this is easily corrected as mentioned in the other reviews. My trail riding takes in a lot of climbing, the high front handlebars make it a bit difficult to keep the front tire on the ground while I climb long and steep. I may switch the front stem to a straight one to get the front end lower. The long travel in the shocks also add to the height. They however are worth it. The price does not include the pump necessary to adjust the front forks. This pump is essential to a good ride | | Similar Products Used: | Specialty Rock Hopper Comp | | Bike Setup: | Stock | | Bottom Line: | I love this bike. First let me say that I weigh in at 220 and the other reviews from the large guys really influenced my purchase. This is my first real mountain bike and I couldn't be happier for the price I paid.. I ride hard at least twice a week and have come to appreciate the pedals and the long travel front shock. Once I figured out the right shock adjustment things got better. Keeping the right amount of air in the shocks eliminates the noise from them The frame is solid, the gears change very smoothly under a heavy load and overall this is a great bike and value. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$1029.00 | | Purchased At: | BikeFactory | | Strengths: | Great for what Trek claims, "...works all week and races on the weekend." This bike performs what it's built up to be. | | Weaknesses: | The RockShox Pilot SL have no problem performing, but I have some squeaking from them at times. I'll find out about it, when I take it to the shop for the 30-day follow up tuning. Excess grease on the seat stem will cause sliding. Clean it up, and it will be fine. | | Similar Products Used: | Test rode: Gary Fisher Big Sur, Trek 4900 | | Bike Setup: | Stock w/disc option | | Bottom Line: | I'm 6', 170 lbs. on a 21.5" frame. This bike works well for me. I gave this bike a quick initiation. After a few weeks, I put it through a cross country duathlon. It did it's part through the 20K leg of varied terrain: jeep road, single track, sand, grass, bumps and climbs. It took a good pounding and held up better than I did, since I was a bit out of practice. During the week, dodging the streets of Honolulu is a breeze. It handles well through tight spots, and can accelerate, when I need to put it through the paces of traffic. The disc brakes are a worth having for added performance, on and off the road. It's a bike I can appreciate after being on a Diamondback Ascent EX for twelve plus years. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

In the mid level range of bikes, I'd rate it way up there. As other reviewers have said the seatpost does drift down at first, but once grease is removed and post is cranked down, it's fine. But get rid of that saddle. For the casual street rider who also likes to offroad it a bit, this bike is perfect. It's tough, agile, and turns heads. I've had at least ten people ask me about the bike since I bought it a month ago. I haven't had any brake problems yet, nor experienced any shock problems. If you're a serious off roader though you may want a higher end full suspension bike. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I spent a lot of time searching for the best cross-country bike and have decided to give it a shot with TREK 6700. It's certainly worth of money, however has some disadvantages. The bike's weight is apprx. 13kg (29lbs) - despite the SLR superlight aluminium frame, I find the bike a bit too heavy for its class. Secondly, the saddle is quite uncomfortable, especially if you take a longer ride. And finaly, the fork rattles and makes a thunk sound when it compresses.
However I am very pleased with the bike in general. It's great hill climber and it tracks well even in tough conditions. It's definitely the frame which makes this bike supurb. Upgrading some parts (saddle, fork, breaks) would make it a seriuos competitor, such as the 8000 model. Anyway for the most MTB enthusiasts it should do just fine! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Avid pro digi Ti front and rear brakes. SOON to be replaced saddle ;) and crane creek ergo bar ends. | | Bottom Line: | first off... if you don't read anything else I write KNOW THIS! I am 6'4" and 280 lbs! this is the only and I repeat ONLY bike that could withstand the kind of abuse BIG MEN can only dish out. The frame is OUTSTANDING! with an xl frameset and a slightly raised seat I have a very comfortable and agressive attack position when riding. also my biggest need was a STRONG shock with stiffness but sensitive enough so I don't bottom out every bump. The RockShox Pilot SL works wonders. Its not the greatest shock and will be replaced likely next year, but it provides the durability and reponse that I need when I ride. also the handlebars do NOT flex even with all my weight... and the problems with the seatpost... disregard them. I outweigh all of the previous posts and I bike just as hard... WITH NO PROBLEM.
Now with that being said... there are some things that need to be addressed, the stock brakes are crap. change em. I reckommend avids system with the speed dials and a higher end brake. this provided me with much more durability and stopping power, not to mention koolstops for pads... a must have... also take that seet and hand it back to the dealer, make them give you a better one or at least take it in on trade in because the seat does nothing but cause the rump and junk =O a bunch of hurt.
bottom line, this is by far the best bike that I rode for under 1000 or under... the rest were just lighter with the same components. i ride decent trails with nice uphills and fairly rugged downhill slopes and the 6700 holds true to the climb like a billy goat. even hauling 300 lbs up a steep trail is easy... Decent value for the money GREAT overall rating. nice to handle and as durable as they come. I give it 5 flaming for value, cuz its the best under 1000... and 5 flaming because I'm ... well HUGE and it hasn't had any problems. for all you BIG guys out there... take my advise... this is the bike you want. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Love the black/red/silver color scheme! | | Weaknesses: | Blew a tube on the 2nd ride. Tires and tubes are light for racing. Front forks are alittle noisy when going over any type of roots...will have dealer check this out on next visit. No problem at all so far with the seat post and I weight about 215 lbs. | | Similar Products Used: | Giant Iguana, Inguana Disk, Trek 490, Raleigh M80 Disk, Fisher Tassajara, Cannondale F300 | | Bike Setup: | Stock - RockShox Pilot SL, Bontrager Wheels, Deore/Deore LX Derailleurs | | Bottom Line: | Spent over 3 months researching on-line and test riding bikes in the Daytona/Orlando area. Although the Raliegh M80 and Giant Iguana were great deals, I felt that the 6700 had the best frame and components for the money... even though it cost a couple hundred dollars more. Great bike for the trail riding and intermediate technical riding the I enjoy. The disc become a bit squeeky after a hard day of xc and serious downhill. | | Bike Setup: | Stock except for the hayes disc setup | | Bottom Line: | The point is that it is all in the rider, you dont have to spend large amounts of money to get top of the line parts and what not. I have rode with many long time hardcore xc hotshots with two to three thousand dollar bikes and get schooled. I this bike is killer all the way around. Clean the post of the grease and crank down the collar to prevent the post from disappearing. I am having the shock examined right now. After the second ride, it rattles and makes a thunk sound when it compresses. The ProMax brakes and levers are junk. Look at the reviews on these brakes. After three rides, both front and rear were dragging. Rear brake provides very little stopping power. Bike tracks well and is pretty light for an AL frame. And it looks great!! Good color and decals make for a nice set-up and it looks even better with some dirt and mud on it! Shifters are great too. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

This is not a myth. I'm light (175lbs) and the damn seat collapse on me. I had to adjust it 3 times and crank the lever down just to get it right. $750.00 | | Purchased At: | Bike Tek of Salina | | Strengths: | Frame, Wheel, Tires, Shifters, Gears, clipless pedals, are all solid as a rock, climbs like a moutain goat, faster than all hell on the flats. | | Weaknesses: | The Air Pressure Shocks will not hold enough air, they bottom out quite a lot, the damn bontragger seat post still slips, the seat broke within the first 3 months. | | Similar Products Used: | Gary Fisher Mamba, Trek 4500, Trek 6700 (2002 Model), Gary Fisher Tassajara | | Bike Setup: | All stock except for new tubes with slime, and replacement seat. | | Bottom Line: | First and Foremost let it be stated fr the record, I love this bike. I'm a big guy (6'1" 240 lbs.) and I put my bikes through some serious abuse when I ride. This bike with few exceptions will take everything I've thrown at it and then some. I ended buying the 2003 before even riding it, after using trek products in the past I knew I wouldn't be disapointed. I ride a lot of dirt hardtrails here in Kansas so when we find good technical stuff, we stretch our bikes to the max. I have yet to straighten the wheels once, or replace any of the gearing components. My only beef with this bike is that the seatpost still slips like crazy at first (like the 2002 model did as well) you have to clean it about 12 times using turpentine or gasoline to get all the nasty grease they use on it off, only after that does it perform well. The stock saddle on the 6700 is crap, the simple art of riding around town on it bent it all out wack, and the rear supports totally broke after about 3 months of riding. The front suspension does not hold enough air for me either, it "says" it will hold up to 50psi but we can't cram much more than about 30 into it without it all leaking out when we disconnect. As I said, being a big guy, the shocks bottom out on a regular basis. After replacing the saddle with a racing model, and replacing the front suspension with something better (christmas time) I think this bike will be an unstoppable hardtrail racer, for not too bad of a price. All in all I think it's a great buy for a college kid who doesn't want to spend a fortune for a nice bike you can do some racing with, and still have some fun too. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |
