New wheels Hope XC hubs with 717 rims | | Bottom Line: | This is an off the shelf race bike. A few tweaks here and there take it from good to great. This bike accelerates fast and the frame, although light, feels sturdy. The Rock Shox Judy C fork fitted on my matt black 2000 model is easily servicable. So far I've resisted changing the fork because this one does the job. Serviced and replaced with thicker oil help the fast rebound issue. But i'm thinking of a Marzocchi Marathon XC. I'd happily throw money at this bike because if I decided on another frame (Orange P7 maybe)I can just strip all the quality parts off it. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$900.00 | | Purchased At: | united cycle | | Strengths: | Light, strong frame. RS Duke shock, pretty good at absorbing bumps with great stiffness and resulting control, far superior to the Pilot on the '03 model. | | Weaknesses: | Stock components result in a pretty heavy bike for a hardtail. Some upgrades needed for more serious riders looking for extra performance. | | Similar Products Used: | Road bikes, 4900. | | Bike Setup: | Upgraded crank to LX Hollowtech (needed new bb of course), LX shifters, XT front derailleur, LX cassette in back to improve shifting (shoulda' gone XT as the LX is heavier than the stock SRAM 7 even though the LX shifts better). Recently replaced rear AC Jones tire with Panaracer Fire XC - jaw dropping improvement in climb performance in loose and hard pack - haven't tried them in the wet yet. | | Bottom Line: | Anyone wanting a good weekend recreational ride bike would probably be well served. Anyone wanting more performance would be advised to look at the 8000 - about the only things I'd change on that bike would be the crank and the wheels to Mavic 618's. I'm almost there with my 6700 but it's costing me a lot more than if I'd gone with the 8000 to start. 5 value chilis because of the sweet frame and Duke shock (remember this is for the '02 model only) at this price. 4 overall because some of the components are rec bike only. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$750.00 | | Purchased At: | Local bike shop | | Strengths: | Frame is nice and stiff. I'm very pleased with the fork, too - a few eyars agao this fork would have cost the better part of what I paid for the bike. Some people complain about the saddle being a brick, and while I'll admit it's a bit hard, it doesn't strike me as being nearly so bad as what others seem to imply. The whole setup seems very light and responsive. The geometry on this bike fit me a little better than a couple of the Gary Fisher's I test-rode, too (though the GF bikes are certainly nice as well). | | Weaknesses: | Some of the Bontrager components are a little iffy, but again probably not as bad as a lot of people seem to think. The seatpost and chainrings are probably the weakest components on the bike. The pedals are fairly cheap, but they get the job done nicely. Overall, you're getting a pretty good drivetrain for the price. They had to save on costs somewhere to be able to sell for this price, so I'm not too bothered by the Bontrager stuff overall. | | Similar Products Used: | Custom tri bike (road), Gary Fisher Hoo Koo E Koo, a few others I can't put a name to at the moment. | | Bike Setup: | Stock except for Profile bar ends, new seatpost, and new chainrings. | | Bottom Line: | One helluva good deal. With a few strategic component upgrades, you can shave a few pounds off this bike and have a raceworthy machine for not a whole heck of a lot. Sure, it has its weaknesses, but given the price I'm not about to start complaining. I do recommend that if you get this bike you swap out the chainrings, seatpost, saddle, stem, and possibly pedals for a little better components, but even if you don't, this bike is solid and rides well. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$900.00 | | Strengths: | Nice, quality, handmade frame. The mostly deore drivetrain mated with the LX rear deralleur, and bontrager crank (which is most likely made by truvativ) works very well, though I wish they had gone all the way for a full LX drivetrain. RockShox Duke C appears to be a sturdy, fucntional, fork and you can't beat the feel of air. Though I prefer to stay away from in house stuff such as bontrager and coda etc, it seems as though bontrager has done a relitively good job of choosing companies for it to stick it's name on. The crank is very nice, the wheels are sturdy and the hubs are smooth.
and much less importantly, it just looks cool.
| | Weaknesses: | The hard compound in the shimano brake pads may be sturdy, and still works, but I can get much more performance out of the soft compound (salmon coloured) kool stops.
As well the bontrager tires have got to go. | | Similar Products Used: | Fat City, Wicked Trek 820 Gary Fisher Tassajara Trek 930 Specialized Stump Jumper.

The brake problem I mentioned in the first review was not really a problem, but just myself getting used to V-brakes. But what I don't understand are these reviews complaining about the bontrager parts after replacing their old $4 grand carbon bikes. For $900, the 6700 gives you frame and fork quality typically found on the $1300 hardtails. After that, the rest of the components are what you'd expect for $900. If you're coming from a low-end bike like I did, the first things you'll notice are the powerful brakes and the very smooth shifting (both good things, although I had to get use to the brakes, since I was coming from bottom-of-the-line linear pull brakes that barely did anything). I've had no problems with any of the components, and I've yet to true the wheels. Bottom line is it's a great bike, especially for the price, with nary a problem. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

XTR leverset and considering XTR V-brakes and derailleurs. Still deciding on whether I want to cut down the steerer tube or get an Easton EC70 flat bar. | | Bottom Line: | So far I've put nearly 1000 miles on the bike and I'm enjoying it greatly. This is my first MTB ever and I'm really happy I chose it over lesser priced models (the frame and components are doing me nice). Although, I'm curious whether I should have gotten a 6500 and upgraded the parts myself, since I'm basically replacing all of the stuff that the 6700 adds over the 6500.
The chain liked dropping off of the chain rings on the Bontrager crank quite often, but since I recently bent the middle chain ring, I decided to swap it out with an XT crank set with splined bottom bracket--thus far, I've been very happy with the shifting performance.
I believe I measured the seat post to be 270mm on my 15.5" frame, this is rather short, and 99% of the time, I run it at about the minimum insertion point. I should have gotten the 17.5" frame (I'm 5'9", so I fall right in between the sizes for 15.5" and 17.5"), but the standover was a little lacking for my taste, probably would have resolved the short seat post issue... And to the fellow who had the problem with the slipping seat post, I also had the same problem for the longest time, until I cleaned the seat tube and post thoroughly at the clamping location; the grease that the LBS applies reduces friction too much, no matter the clamping force, the post would still slide down.
I would have liked slightly nicer components but that probably would have knocked the 6700 out of my budget, still 4 chilis on value (no reason, just arbitrary). Otherwise, I love riding the bike, it makes me happy when I'm out on the trail. For an aggressive beginner with a reasonable budget, this is a very appropriate bike. For other folks who are happy with the mid-range, this will work well, too. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$880.00 | | Purchased At: | Dirty Harry's | | Strengths: | This bike gives so much bang for the buck. The Duke C forks are nice and stiff, and overall make you feel confident when decending, or tackling any bump. The frame is nothing but rock and roll, nice and lite, and overall has really great geometry. i love to tackle uphill climbs and this bike just delivers. | | Weaknesses: | I'm not a big rider, however, I do prefer meatier tires. The Bontrager stock tires that came with the bike are nice and fast, but I ride in and around Pittsburgh, which can be at peak monsoon season, or nice and dry within the span of five minutes. So, a little more tread would be nice. | | Similar Products Used: | Giant, Fischer, other Treks. | | Bike Setup: | Stock. | | Bottom Line: | The bottom line is that I dig this bike like a ditch, and would recommend it to anyone who isn't afraid of a great hardtail. Truly worth the money, and have done nothing but enjoyed every ride with it. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$850.00 | | Purchased At: | local shop | | Strengths: | duke fork is stiff and smooth, light stiff frame, deore/lx compnents, superstock wheels fly. climbs like a champ. | | Weaknesses: | tires are mediocre at best. grips a bit hard (im used to my oury grips) | | Similar Products Used: | raleigh m400 | | Bike Setup: | stock, replaced break pads to kool stops, panaracer firepro 1.8 rear, panaracer mack sk front. | | Bottom Line: | great deal for the cash. the frame is great, sub 4 lbs, great geometry, handling is very predictable. shifts flawlessly after the cables stretch out. duke c fork is so smooth, plenty of travel. superstock wheelset rolls fats and smooth, the jones ac tires arent terrible, just like the faster fire pro's better. seat is also very comfortable. could use a longer stem but thats a personal thing. been happy with it so far and would reccomend it to any xc rider looking for a mid range ride. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$850.00 | | Strengths: | Stiff frame and the duke shock is very smooth. It sticks to corners and the stops on a dime. Feels a little bigger than my carbon 8700 but is saves your back with the crowbars. | | Weaknesses: | Bontrager components are horrible - especially the crank. The seat post is a total piece of junk. I went through 3 before I found one that didn't slip on the seat rails no matter how hard you tightened the bolt. If you look at the mill work on the seat post it is just horrible. They should be ashamed. I have serious chain suck on this bike - to the point I have broken the chain 7-8 times. The bike shop I bought it from is having the same problem on other SLR Trek frames and one Fuel. They can't seem to figure out what is going on with the cranks. This bike does not hold up under stress and race conditions. I am trashing the drive train. No matter how much tweaking I do, the damn thing still slips on specific cogs in the 9 speed - when you really crank it on an uphill. I am now looking for a "real" bike that can handle the stress - ie. Litespeed and Yeti. I have no interest in trying to fix this Trek by thowing more money into it and then crossing my fingers that it will stop breaking. I am so irritated with it I can't really describe my frustration. There is nothing more frustrating that drive train problems. | | Similar Products Used: | Trek Carbon/Easton 8700 (I should have kept my old bike) | | Bike Setup: | Stock - with all Bontrager components. Bontrager wheels, cranks, stem, crowbar, seatpost, and hubs. They look good but I don't trust them. Avid break levers. I love those things. They are totally adjustable and work well. | | Bottom Line: | This bike looks like a racer but it isn't. It does comes with a great shock - though a bit heavy. And, the trade off is Bontrager components. They had to cut cost somewhere. If you are a weekend rider and don't have buddies that hate you because you keep the pace at a high level - then this bike might work for you. It doesn't work for me.

$880.00 | | Purchased At: | Renaissance | | Strengths: | Weight, Stiffness, Looks like the Trek Elite 9.8 (2002 ver) while whizzing past others! | | Weaknesses: | Bontrager components | | Similar Products Used: | Trek Y's | | Bike Setup: | Stock, for now | | Bottom Line: | Over-all top notch ride. Small grip bout the Bontrager components, theres alot. Bontrager is Ok but will replace with better components. Rock Shox Duke C fork is groovy, no complaints but will upgrade soon.
Shifting seemed a bit squirly but went away. Great Bike | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$800.00 | | Purchased At: | LBS | | Strengths: | Light, fast, and one tough S.O.B. | | Weaknesses: | The stock Jones AC tires | | Similar Products Used: | Bianchi & Trek lower-end models | | Bike Setup: | Stock 6700 with XTR upgrades | | Bottom Line: | This is a nice setup. I was used to cheaper Bianchi and Trek bikes that I just upgraded when new technoogy came out. Well, I decided to step up to the plate and get a new ride. The 6700 was an excellent choice. The stock components would have done, but I had the XTR setup on my old bike, so I just switched them out. I got rid of the Jones ACs and put a set of Velocirators on. This bike takes everyhting I've thrown at it. I've been through moderatre downhills and creeks and everything in between. My 6700 hasn't skipped a beat. It clibs like a mountain goat. But I have to say, I did have my concerns about the Bontrager crank. Not any more. It's as stiff as a board, even when I really get down and dirty. The bottom line: if you're looking for a nice ride at a reasonable price, go with the 6700. Plenty of bang for you buck. This baby won't let you down, guaranteed. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$850.00 | | Purchased At: | Wheelworks | | Strengths: | Really, really, really fast and fun. Shifts smooth, everything works great, great value, incredible wheelset, and a complete blast to ride. | | Weaknesses: | I heard the bontrager tires stunk, but I have yet to encounter a problem with them. I didn't like the feel of the brakes (sketchy, but maybe they just haven't broken in yet?) | | Similar Products Used: | Gary Fisher Hoo Koo E Koo | | Bike Setup: | I think I'll leave it stock except maybe change the tires to Panaracer Trailblaster or IRC Mythos XC. | | Bottom Line: | Very light, fast, and fun. After testing a Fisher HKEK this felt like a million bucks, even though I liked the Fisher too (just not nearly as much). The only problem with this bike that I have is that it's really easy to go fast, which is a great thing, but I got a sketchy feel from the brakes, so I had to be extra careful while braking. While the retail is $930, barely any shops sell it for that much (pretty much every shop in my area sells it for $850) and that makes it an even better value. After my first summer with this dream machine I'll give an updated review. You know how sometimes you test bikes and you like them, but then there's that one bike that you fall in love with when you test it? This is it. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$800.00 | | Purchased At: | Wayfarer Bicycle | | Strengths: | Great Value, Duke C fork is extremely rigid and fairly plush without much breaking in. | | Weaknesses: | Front wheel easily comes off groung when climbing. Definitly need bar ends to climb. | | Similar Products Used: | '99 Trek 930 | | Bike Setup: | Stock | | Bottom Line: | Great bike for all off road riders. Bontrager Jones AC tires are fast and they get good traction in all conditions. I've only had it for a couple weeks, but ti is a great bike. 5 flamin' chilis for value and only 4 flamin' chilis for overall because it is not a very good climber. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$849.00 | | Purchased At: | Cyclery USA | | Strengths: | Frame is extremely stiff and rigid, Duke C fork is stiff and not prone to flexing. Climbs like a scalded cat | | Weaknesses: | Cranks are a little weak. They seem to flex a bit too much under hard pedaling in the big ring -- minor inconvience | | Similar Products Used: | 01 Trek 8000, 00 Trek 7000 | | Bike Setup: | Stock | | Bottom Line: | The frame alone is worth the price. The SLR aluminium has previously only been available on the 8000 and above. It is light, stiff and the oblong (sp?) eliptical (sp?) downtube looks way cool. Very much worth the money, and quite a big step up from last years 6700. (shimano clipless pedals, slr frame) | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |
