    Date Reviewed: March 23, 2003
    Duration Product Used:6 months
Purchased At:Paki Paki Bikeshop, Thames, NZ
    Strengths:light, responsive, great climber
Weaknesses:Had huge problems with chainsuck but was fixed by replacing bontrager front rings and crank set with shimano set.
    Similar Products Used:Diamondback sorrento sport
Bike Setup:panracer smoke classic rear tyre, panracer x-fire front
Bottom Line:Excellent bike apart from chainsuck, but full marks to trek for sorting the problem. Disc brakes finish the package off, I could never go back to V-brakes now! Duke forks have improved with time and have a nice smooth action. Definitely reccomend trek 6700 disc to anybody who wants to race or ride hard.

    Favorite Trail:Settler's Cabin
    Duration Product Used:3 months
    Price Paid: $1000.00
    Purchased At:Scholl's
Strengths:Great value. Very comfortable. Nice components. Durable. Disc brakes work great.
Weaknesses:None found so far, except for my own inadequacies.
    Bike Setup:Stock
Bottom Line:Great bike for the money. I've crashed multiple times and the only thing I've broken is my body. The bike is still in great shape. I would only upgrade if I could afford full suspension.

    Date Reviewed: March 22, 2002
    Duration Product Used:6 months
    Purchased At:Ancaster Cycle
Strengths:Easy to ride on the steep stuff and the winding trails. Don't have to fight the bike around obstacles, it follows where I want to go. After the initial cable stretch the shifters are fast and accurate, and I like the extra low range the gearset has. Amazing service from the dealer, and the hydraulic discs never rub, squeek, or fail to get you slowed down in a hurry. The Duke has kept me upright when I should have gone horizontal and hasn't lost any air except for the changes from cold conditions when it gets softer (less air pressure).
Weaknesses:Mostly me. The presta air valve on the Duke isn't long enough for a bike pump or normal air chuck to reach.

Bottom Line:If you have the coin available it is worth every one. I looked at a bunch of bikes before I bought it and I chose the Trek because of the great dealer, the frame is made and assembled in North America, and it was the easiest for me to jump on and get comfortable with. After almost half a year, I'm very pleased with my choice. When I got it, I ordered it with the hydraulics disc option because it wasn't much extra and I just looked at them as icing on the cake. However, once you get used to the discs, there's no going back to V-brakes. Better stopping, less crud getting stuck in the top of the forks, easier to clean, and no stopping to clean the pads so they sort of work again.
I'd give it 5 chillis but I'm sure the new 8500 disc would be better yet!

Weaknesses:I haven't really found any yet, But I already snapped the rear bontrager skewer, may have been my own stupidity though
Similar Products Used:gary fisher big sur, and Joshua
Bike Setup:eveything stock, bontrager: crowbar, superstock rims, seatpost and saddle, and cranks. LX rear, deore front, and shifters, shimano hydraulic disc brakes.

Submitted by Toby Grabs a Weekend Warrior from Claryville
    Date Reviewed: December 2, 2001
    Favorite Trail:Upper Trail at FV
Duration Product Used:Tested or demo'ed only
Strengths:Overall comfort, though what can you tell from a half hour test ride, and riding position. Plus, the paint job is great!
Weaknesses:I cannot find any reviews for the Duke C fork. I wonder about its durability and quality.
Similar Products Used:2002 Trek 6500, 2001 GF Big Sur, 2002 GF HKEK
Bottom Line:It got a better frame, same rims and components from the 2001 and a new fork. The reviews for the 2001 6700 were all very positive excepting the front fork, so if the new fork (Duke C) is good then this is a great bike. I plan on buying one. Look back for an update in a couple of months.
