    Favorite Trail:Piranha Pit
    Duration Product Used:2 Years
    Price Paid: $500.00
    Purchased At:Local Bike Shop
Strengths:The frame, and the ability to upgrade.
    Weaknesses:Tires, saddle, front fork, pedals.
    Similar Products Used:None.
Bike Setup:Panaracer Fire XC Pro tires, WTB Speed V saddle, Rockshox Tora 318 solo air fork, Sram PC 68 chain.
Bottom Line:This is a good bike for those who are new to riding single track and want to try it out without breaking the bank. I've put about 1500 miles on this bike and began the upgrade path quite early. First things first, get clipless pedals and new tires. Platforms suck and the Jones tires that came stock wear quickly and don't grab except when you don't want them to. My saddle bent after 500 miles and hurt like hell. Plenty of good options out there. I recently put on the Rockshox fork and I might as well be riding a completely different bike. It soaks up hits without bouncing like a pogo stick (thank you RST) and lets you keep a line and carve through corners. Bottom line, this is a decent entry level bike that will make you fall in love with the sport and start buying better components.

Bottom Line:I have rode 250 miles with only 1 crash and the bike has held up fine so far. A good bike for the money, not the greatest quality but for an average cyclist it is a good bike. A serious mountain biker may want to look a little higher, a good entry level mountain bike.

It kind of leaves you wating more but cant dish it out without seroius bodily and or bike injuries.

Strengths:The frame has be the best thing about the bike. a good aluminium frame which is used on the trek 4900. The first thing i did was to swap the RST to Rock Shox, and change it to a 9 speed deore set up. The hayes disc brakes are very effective for a very good price.
    Weaknesses:RST forks.
Bike Setup:Rock Shox Judy C, Shimano Deore set up

Bottom Line:It's a good beginners bike, but once you get into it the bike starts falling apart. I bent the handlebars, buckled the back wheel, broke the seat, and wore the tyres out in about 4 months. It's good for the money, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who's been riding for a while.

    Strengths:Trying to...real hard...sorry,can't think of any.
Weaknesses:Everything. Low end components. I certainly do not recommend this bike, not even for beginners.
    Similar Products Used:Kona Kula
Bike Setup:Stock, unfortunately. There is much to be done!
Bottom Line:I have nothing positive to say. This bike actually makes me not want to ride, if that's ever possible! The fork is horrible,I barely get 2 inches of travel. Alivio is crap. Disc brakes are OK, but shimano is better. This bike is dirt. Sorry about the negative, but that's all it is. Unless of course, you enjoy getting ripped off! Trek disapointed me with this one, I guess you get what you pay for. 2 flammin chilis... Naaah,1!

Strengths:for the price this bike is awsome, with the hayes disc's for a good price this bike is now my life for a new rider this bike is great and it has the potential to be upgraded as you get better. the disc's on this bike have about the same breaking power as the v break but gives you more options like feathering and varied breaking power
Weaknesses:i find that the rear derailer skips now and again and my front wont go into 3rd easly
    Bike Setup:stock trek 4300 disc
Bottom Line:this is a great buy for ant one just getting into the sport and can be upgraded easly, the afordable disc was a good idea on treks part. the only problem i found was that the derailer could be upgraded but that is no biggy right!! i live for this bike now ITS AWSOME!!! and thats the bottom line

Favorite Trail:Don't have one here yet.
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
    Price Paid: $415.00
    Purchased At:Bicycles Ect...
Strengths:The fact that this bike had name brand disk brakes and only cost $400 was where I have in. I also fell in love with the color scheme. I also like the thick tubing of the frame. Seems very sturdy. I rode it last night after going to a M-Wing saddle and the ride was quiet and responsive.
Weaknesses:I hate that the shifters and brake levers are combined. I guess this was Treks way of lowering the cost of the bike but this just seems like something that you would find no a K-Mart bike. I understand that this is a recreational bike but I plan on making plenty of changes...(Fork, seat post, crankset, levers & shifters). Maybe I should have just gotten the frame and built it up from there.
Similar Products Used:First bike was a Schwinn Moab. I love this bike and regret everyday giving it to my little brother. I've also tried the Fuji Thrill and the Gary Fisher Tassahara.
Bike Setup:Deore R-Derailer, M-Wing saddle with Titanium rails, Bontrager 125 lenght w/ 10 degree rise.
Bottom Line:For the money, You can't get better out there. I looke at the Fuji Thrill for a while but went with Trek for their rep and the quality of their products. If you are just a bike rider, this bike will be fine out of the box. If you are a competitive spirited weekend warrior on a budget get this bike and have an understanding that upgrades will be manditory. You can easily have pretty much the same bike as the ($1000) Trek 8000 series for under $800.

Purchased At:Scheels All Sports-Eau Claire, WI.
Strengths:I fell in love with it the minute I saw it, and I wasn't even thinking of buying a bike that day. But, a $500 bike onsale for $368 w/disc brakes and a computer I had to have it. The color was something else and it just looked like a "mean" bike but the price is what caught my eye.
Weaknesses:The only problems that I have encountered is a slight squeeking or rubbing of the brake pads and a vibration from the disc's.
Similar Products Used:1999 Giant Rincon Se and it has only seen rain 3 times.
Bike Setup:RST Adj.Fork, Shimano shifters, derailers and spocket. Hayes Disc brakes and a Trek Bicycle Computer. (I prefer th cateye myself).

Strengths:Cool color scheme, Hayes disc brakes, metal pedals, brand name decent components. Great frame. Weight is average. Great Value.
Weaknesses:Need adjustments after a few hours. Knobbier tires would be a plus.
Similar Products Used:My friend's Gary Fisher Paragon.
Bike Setup:Stock bike, with the addition of ODI Yeti grips, and Vetta computer.
Bottom Line:Great beginner bike for me. I ride whenever I can. I had a few flats already, but I think with a new set of tires and Slime liners, that problem will go away. Rear derailleur needs adjustment, but the bike handles well for a newbie like me. As soon as my forks start bottoming out, I'll upgrade to a set of Rok Shox. Good overall performer for newbie riders.

Bottom Line:This bike is the best bike , until you ride it. If you are planing on rideing this bike then you might as well buy shimano. That way it costs you about half of what it would cost buy replacement parts. I'm in the bike shop getting something fixed or replaced every week at least, often I'm in there twice a week.

    Price Paid: $450.00
    Purchased At:in england (£399.99)with 10%discount, so £359.99
Strengths:Nice frame for the money, and thw weight is not bad either. The saddle is very comfy, and i can easily ride all day on it.
Weaknesses:i dont know if anyone else has found this, but i have been very dissapointed with the breaks. there stopping power is not amazing (could be a fault, am going to get it checked out), as it satnds at the moment my old V's (deoras) were much better. Also on 2nd and 3rd front cogs find it hard to get into 6th and 8th on the rear.
Bottom Line:I would expect the disc breaks to be a build fault and will be getting them adjusted for sure. With a little time i could certainly fix the gear problem. At the end of the day, for an entry level bike, you aint going to get much more for your money. With upgraded shocks and the gears and breaks sorted out, it could become a very good entry level bike indeed.

Weaknesses:The tire frames are built really well...but the drops i do on them are going to be too much says my friend matt. I think they are going to be just fine. The RST shocks only have 2.5 inches of travel...so I need to upgrade to some nicer Judy shocks. Other then that the bike is pretty nice.

Strengths:Light, strong, paintjob, price, and disk brakes. The disks brakes have worked sweetly for me.
Weaknesses:I have found the drivetrain to prone you mess up. Sometimes when you shift 2 gears on one sproket it likes to shift to one gear stay on that ring for a few seconds and then shift to the next gear. I have also found that some times it dosn't want to shift into the 8th gear when its in any front chain ring gear, and in any gear combination under hard pedaling it dose what i like to call skipping. I think most of this could be fixed by adjustments.
