I say, If you can't take corners think a little harder about the way your riding. Some tires do have a tendency to wash out, or to not grab in the loose stuff, but for an all around cross country tire (these were NOT made for downhill) these tires are great. Yes, if I were a millionaire I would probably have a different set of tires for every possible riding condition, but for everyday riding (which I get the feeling many of you one chile people rarely experience) these are great. I don't understand why everyone gave this tire such a bad review. First, there is a reason why this tire is named 'psycho.' This tire is made for SPEED! For that reason, it has low rolling resistance and can be dangerous if used wrongly. I don't understand why people use this tire for downhill or why one person noted that after the tread wears out, he felt dangerous riding with the tire! No matter what kind of tire it is, if the tread is worn out, YOU WILL eat dirt like never before! Also, this tire has soft rubber compound which grips will when its tread is still around. If you are looking for a tire that is going to last you a life time, then go buy something else! Don't blame the tire for what it does best simply because you bought it for the wrong purpose. | Overall Rating: |

Everyone who gives this tire one chili seems to think that this tire is for the rear wheel. These people are wrong. Knobbies are for the front wheel - the more round profile and numerous knobs are designed to give traction when turning or plowing through mud, sand, deep dust, etc, and Psycho K's do a great job at this in all the conditions described above. If you want a rear tire that will give you traction in a wide variety of conditions, you need to go for a tread pattern with wide knobs across the width of the tire, like the Psycho TT. the K and the TT came OEM front and rear, respectively, on my '97 TREK 7000, and they've been fabulous. Well, about 10 rides later, the stitching on the new tire, inside this time, came loose and the bead rubbed a hole in my tube. Well, that's two, and I'm through with Tioga. Those that bag this tyre should learn to ride.If you need 800gm downhill tyres to corner on then look at your skill level not the tire. It's a cross country tyre rthat weighs only 540gms and is good on single track , it floats abit on mud because of it's width (unlike a conti cross country ) but is predictable because of the large stiff side knobs .It will slide then hook up on the edges. COmpare it to other lighweight cross country tyres of this generation and weight for weight it will have better rolling resistance and hook up better on the edges. It's a good front tyre but lacks the traction on the back and because of the larger flat knob profile is sketchy on pebbly , gravelly trails. | Overall Rating: |

My girlfriend at the time I used these wanted to ride my bike (switch bikes) down the fire road. I said sure babe, but be warned. So she washed out and took all the skin off her back and leg. She had to walk the 2 miles back to the car, with the gnats and bugs buzzing around in the severe heat. I'll admit, the traction was superb on the first ride (of course that was my first ride ever so what did I know). The problem is the lack of a supple side wall tread to keep you in control. another problem that shouldn't go unnoticed to those who must absolutly have this tire- the compound is too soft for any thing but soft dirt... take these puppies on the road and you might as well carry a few spares on your back just in case. These tires were stock on my '95 GT Timberline (a decent frame rife with terrible components, all since destroyed). Regardless of tire pressure, these Tiogas were snakebite kings - virtually all of my rides were interrupted by a puncture. They were off my bike in the first 2 months, as I was disgusted with their (lack of) grip and feeble tube protection. They now do occasional duty as mud tires on my '89 Rock Hopper. The Psycho K is a totally unacceptable (no stars). | Overall Rating: |

Just to add, Worst tire I've ever owned. I am a 190lb. rider and keep the pressure high (65lbs) on my tires to compensate, yet I have had WAY TO MANY FLATS, both puncture and pinch with this tire. The sidewalls seem to give out alot and my MAVICs have really taken too many dents from pinches coming all the way through. Sidewalls were cut but not on a ride where I would expect that to happen. Lack of traction in (where to begin) MUD, DRY, WET, LOOSE, SAND, GRAVEL, ROCK and any other medium a mountain bike might encounter. On the fair side they are cheap (tubes I've gone through have been far more expensive). | Overall Rating: |

As for all the Klein and Trek riders out there who got their Psycho Ks as OEM tire - tough shit. This has nothing to do with it being a good tire or the bikes being expensive; the Psycho K is cheap! Ever since Trek took over Klein and their marketing, Klein's quality has really slumped (they even put Alivio bottom brackets on some of their bikes and those are the worst) I ride a Pulse Comp myself and I won't buy another one (Don't get me wrong, the handling is brilliant but when I buy Klein again, it will be a frame only - one word: ATTITUDE!!! About the Psycho: forget it! I ride both on and off road and as soon as my Psychos are worn out, I will get rid of them (won't take long :), especially in the rear (barely 800 km and there's almost nothing left). I get rear wheel slip even on-road, when the tire is warm, braking wear is tremendous; it's just tooo soft. Singletrail traction is decent but cornering performance is next to nonexistent. These tires came stock on my Trek 7000. This is my commute bike in addition to my weekend fun bike so they've seen both on and off-road riding. The price is pretty low for a Kelvar tire, and the weight is pretty good as well. Treadwear is a bit fast, especially in the rear, but I managed to get 1500 miles out of them before they absolutely needed to be replaced. The rubber seems a bit softer then most other tires which may explain the wear rate. It may also explain why they don't seem to dig in very well either. The nobs are easily displaced with your fingers which is fine for mud, but nothing more firm. Once, on a particularly nasty (and loose) downhill, I had to bail when I managed to lock both ends and was sliding out of control. My friend on Conti's made it down without incident. Bottom line: They have always taken me where I wanted to go, but they have never really inspired confidence. I won't be buying another pair. | Overall Rating: |

These are my regular rubber. I run them both pointed forward so that they behave the same in turns. The name is apt, but they are highly predictable. Controlled slide is how I describe the grip. I know that most people wouldn't like this tire because exiting corners beyond the limit of adhesion goes against instincts; but this is one tire that won't kill me after I exceed it's limit. At the limit, you can safely move your line outwards by barely squeezing the back brake instead of steering out and back in at a greater lean. It's grip is decent--not as great as some new models by other makers. It slings mud beautifully, and it cleans! It cleans Alabama mud and (you won't believe this) it will even do a fair job of cleaning red clay. Conti's also clean. I also used the KR ambers once for a race, but the rubber is so thin between treads that it failed on a sharp rock. | Overall Rating: |

The Phycho k does very well in dirt and the lugs on the sides are very good for turns. I have not found a tire that does well on hard pack dirt with a dusting on top. and finaly yes the tread does wear out on the road and slick rock BUT THAT IS NOT WHAT THEY ARE FOR. Bad points: Poor traction in loose and steep stuff; squirrely cornering characteristics; very prone to flatting from snakebites and goatheads; major rut magnets; will make you ride like a weenie.
These tires are aptly named--only a psycho would like them. These tires cost me a lot of skin, and I couldn't in good conscience recommend them to anyone. I didn't realize how bad they were until I bought a set of Velociraptors--it was like I had a new bike. I agree with a lot of the posts here that the tire is _ok_ for OEM spec'd tire. There weight is fairly good and I suspect that is why many bike manufacturers spec their bikes with them. The tread isn't aggressive enough and does not inspire confidence on fast descents. Rear wheel traction really suffers in any kind of mud and I have had the front tire wash out unexpectedly. They are ok for the first season of use and that is about all the life you can expect from this tire.
