Low rolling resistance.
Weaknesses:Doesn't grip well under braking.
Kinda unpredictable on loose gravel.
Seems to wear fast.
Similar Products Used:Ritchy Megabites, Panaracer Smoke
Bike Setup:'99 Trek 8000
Bottom Line:These are very good tires. It works in well in most conditions. It only gets unpredictable on very loose surfaces. Since the other posts either hate or love this tire, I suppose those who hate this tire are mounting it on

Yes I liked them so much I traded them over to my new bike and sold the bontrager crap.
Bottom Line:I have been riding mountain bikes since before front shocks became popular and can tell you there is not a tire on the market that won't wash out. Some tires really are crap and wash out before others but these are mostly the cheng shin variety. I have found all name brand tires to be very good. If you are washing out there are probably one of three reasons: you hit the brake in the turn, you don't have your weight position well, or you are just going to damned fast around a turn.

Weaknesses:They fall apart!!! I had mine for 2 weeks the knobs ripped off.
Similar Products Used:Huchinson Alligator & Huchinson squall, Tioga Psycho TT & Psycho Edge, Tioga Factory DH and
Bike Setup:K2 Proflex Beast, LX & XT Components, Titec Hell Bent bars, Sachs Chain, oury grips etc...
Bottom Line:Well here I am again writing another review about these tyres. Now that I realise how stupid I was reviewing these tyres as good, I decided to set things straight. I wouldn't use these tyres if they were thrown at me for free. I had this tyre on the back and I tore the knobs off stopping at a set of lights. On the front they are OK if you don't push them too far. The compound that TIOGA used for these tyres is too soft for a back and too hard for a front. I have been riding my friends Huchinson Alligator at the back and the Squall at the front. They are so much better than this piece of C**P. Don't buy them unless you don't ride at speeds over 25 KM/H.

Date Reviewed: July 4, 2000
Favorite Trail:Salmon Falls (it's close)
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Strengths:As a rear tire ... great traction, light, predictable.
As a front tire ... a fine tire for fire roads.
Weaknesses:As a front tire it loses grip easily. They were oem on my gt and liked them ... until I improved. Tried different tire presssures, etc. but no improvement. Tried many tires until I found the Dart Magics ... best tire ever but they don't make them anymore. Only would recommend them if you typically ride fire roads ... not technical trails.
Similar Products Used:Smoke/Dart, Various Specialized tires, Michelins ...
Bike Setup:96 GT w/ Magura Racelite Hydraulic brakes, Deore LX components, Manitou 3 shock.
Bottom Line:Don't bother using it as a front tire if you ride on technical trails. However, as a rear tire they are great and I continue to use them regularly. As a front ... 1 chili ... as a rear ... 5 chilis. Therefore, an overall 3 chili's across the board.

Bottom Line:Since the pictures for ther psycho TT and K are the same, I'm not sure which one I'm really reviewing here. I think the TT is the one most commonly used on the rear, since it has paddles, and the K is the bidirectional front/rear knobby. Anyway, the one I use on the rear of my bike has incredible traction. They're almost bald, and in So. Cal. sand and loose rocks I never lose traction, even on the steep stuff. I've never had any pinch flats - I ride at about 40psi offroad. The only negative is that tread life is pretty short compared to the front tires. Four Chilis

Bottom Line:I prefer to race these due to their quickness. However, I don't use them for anything else because I feel more in control with a bigger, knobbier tire. (I like to blaze the downhills) I stocked up on these tires for only $12 each. It takes a while to wear out the front, but the rear tire will only last about 80 miles of racing abuse. Strengths:
Cheap! light weight, cool colors, good grip in most situations, great for hardpack and slightly tacky situations.
Weaknesses:

Similar Products Used:

Bike Setup:
Cannondale F-1000, Xt rear with Mavic 222, Mavic Crossland frond, Avid 2.0 brakes & levers, riser bar, OURY grips (which kick ass), grip shift & XT. Fatty Headshock
Bottom Line:There is no tire that can beat this one for the price. I bougt three from Supergo for $12.00, and have since seen them for as little as $9.00. I have found that, with the exception of a pare of 1.95 Specialized Ground controll K tires, it is impossiple to honestly blame your tires for an inability to take corners. I say, If you can't take corners think a little harder about the way your riding. Some tires do have a tendency to wash out, or to not grab in the loose stuff, but for an all around cross country tire (these were NOT made for downhill) these tires are great. Yes, if I were a millionaire I would probably have a different set of tires for every possible riding condition, but for everyday riding (which I get the feeling many of you one chile people rarely experience) these are great. For their recent low price, I must give them a well deserved five chili's...

These tires are light also by the way and have very little rolling resistance! I don't know about these 1 & 2 Chili reviewers, They must all be experts (or not) but the psycho k is an excellent front tire. I ride a 97 Trek 930 that came with a k on the front and a tt on the rear, and down here in the desert of west texas where the trails are lined with cactus you need a tire that will keep you upright and the psycho k does the job outstanding. The only time this tire has let me down was going around a 90 degree turn with 6 inches of sand (probably more my fault than the tire) Im not a pro but I ride hard and the psycho k is the shit!

Bottom Line:

I don't understand why everyone gave this tire such a bad review. First, there is a reason why this tire is named 'psycho.' This tire is made for SPEED! For that reason, it has low rolling resistance and can be dangerous if used wrongly. I don't understand why people use this tire for downhill or why one person noted that after the tread wears out, he felt dangerous riding with the tire! No matter what kind of tire it is, if the tread is worn out, YOU WILL eat dirt like never before! Also, this tire has soft rubber compound which grips will when its tread is still around. If you are looking for a tire that is going to last you a life time, then go buy something else! Don't blame the tire for what it does best simply because you bought it for the wrong purpose.

Everyone who gives this tire one chili seems to think that this tire is for the rear wheel. These people are wrong. Knobbies are for the front wheel - the more round profile and numerous knobs are designed to give traction when turning or plowing through mud, sand, deep dust, etc, and Psycho K's do a great job at this in all the conditions described above. If you want a rear tire that will give you traction in a wide variety of conditions, you need to go for a tread pattern with wide knobs across the width of the tire, like the Psycho TT. the K and the TT came OEM front and rear, respectively, on my '97 TREK 7000, and they've been fabulous. Five Flamin' Chilis!

I bought a set of tires for my new Litespeed. After two rides, the front
bead stitching came loose and the tire just came right out of the rim, thereby
blowing the tube. I took it back to my LBS and had them give me a replacement
thinking that it was just a lemon. Well, about 10 rides later, the stitching
on the new tire, inside this time, came loose and the bead rubbed a hole
in my tube. Well, that's two, and I'm through with Tioga. My advice, buy
something else that will last more than a couple rides.

Those that bag this tyre should learn to ride.If you need 800gm downhill tyres to corner on then look at your skill level not the tire. It's a cross country tyre rthat weighs only 540gms and is good on single track , it floats abit on mud because of it's width (unlike a conti cross country ) but is predictable because of the large stiff side knobs .It will slide then hook up on the edges. COmpare it to other lighweight cross country tyres of this generation and weight for weight it will have better rolling resistance and hook up better on the edges. It's a good front tyre but lacks the traction on the back and because of the larger flat knob profile is sketchy on pebbly , gravelly trails.

These tires are the coolest because of what they did to my ex-girlfriend. They're totally sketchy under most circumstances, which I used to hold against them. My girlfriend at the time I used these wanted to ride my bike (switch bikes) down the fire road. I said sure babe, but be warned. So she washed out and took all the skin off her back and leg. She had to walk the 2 miles back to the car, with the gnats and bugs buzzing around in the severe heat. Well, I used think that these tires should be burned, but since she dumped me later I think they are just the thing for some people. So these tires don't grip anything, but they made me a better rider and gave my ex-girlfriend just what she deserved!!!

The problem is the lack of a supple side wall tread to keep you in control. another problem that shouldn't go unnoticed to those who must absolutly have this tire- the compound is too soft for any thing but soft dirt... take these puppies on the road and you might as well carry a few spares on your back just in case. These tires were stock on my '95 GT Timberline (a decent frame rife with terrible components, all since destroyed). Regardless of tire pressure, these Tiogas were snakebite kings - virtually all of my rides were interrupted by a puncture. They were off my bike in the first 2 months, as I was disgusted with their (lack of) grip and feeble tube protection. They now do occasional duty as mud tires on my '89 Rock Hopper. The Psycho K is a totally unacceptable (no stars).

Just to add,
Worst tire I've ever owned. I am a 190lb. rider and keep the pressure high (65lbs) on my tires to compensate, yet I have had WAY TO MANY FLATS, both puncture and pinch with this tire. The sidewalls seem to give out alot and my MAVICs have really taken too many dents from pinches coming all the way through. Sidewalls were cut but not on a ride where I would expect that to happen. Lack of traction in (where to begin) MUD, DRY, WET, LOOSE, SAND, GRAVEL, ROCK and any other medium a mountain bike might encounter. On the fair side they are cheap (tubes I've gone through have been far more expensive).

As for all the Klein and Trek riders out there who got their Psycho Ks as OEM tire - tough shit. This has nothing to do with it being a good tire or the bikes being expensive; the Psycho K is cheap! Ever since Trek took over Klein and their marketing, Klein's quality has really slumped (they even put Alivio bottom brackets on some of their bikes and those are the worst) I ride a Pulse Comp myself and I won't buy another one (Don't get me wrong, the handling is brilliant but when I buy Klein again, it will be a frame only - one word: ATTITUDE!!! About the Psycho: forget it! I ride both on and off road and as soon as my Psychos are worn out, I will get rid of them (won't take long :), especially in the rear (barely 800 km and there's almost nothing left). I get rear wheel slip even on-road, when the tire is warm, braking wear is tremendous; it's just tooo soft. Singletrail traction is decent but cornering performance is next to nonexistent. These tires came stock on my Trek 7000. This is my commute bike in addition to my weekend fun bike so they've seen both on and off-road riding. The price is pretty low for a Kelvar tire, and the weight is pretty good as well. Treadwear is a bit fast, especially in the rear, but I managed to get 1500 miles out of them before they absolutely needed to be replaced. The rubber seems a bit softer then most other tires which may explain the wear rate. It may also explain why they don't seem to dig in very well either. The nobs are easily displaced with your fingers which is fine for mud, but nothing more firm. Once, on a particularly nasty (and loose) downhill, I had to bail when I managed to lock both ends and was sliding out of control. My friend on Conti's made it down without incident. Bottom line: They have always taken me where I wanted to go, but they have never really inspired confidence. I won't be buying another pair.

These are my regular rubber. I run them both pointed forward so that they behave the same in turns. The name is apt, but they are highly predictable. Controlled slide is how I describe the grip. I know that most people wouldn't like this tire because exiting corners beyond the limit of adhesion goes against instincts; but this is one tire that won't kill me after I exceed it's limit. At the limit, you can safely move your line outwards by barely squeezing the back brake instead of steering out and back in at a greater lean. It's grip is decent--not as great as some new models by other makers. It slings mud beautifully, and it cleans! It cleans Alabama mud and (you won't believe this) it will even do a fair job of cleaning red clay. Conti's also clean.
I also used the KR ambers once for a race, but the rubber is so thin between treads that it failed on a sharp rock.
